Asterix is a huge thing in entire europe. It started as a comicbook series, but there are also several (animated) movies. If you don't know those, you might want to keep an eye out for english versions of the movies as they are pretty fun and despite mainly targeting kids, some of the satiric humor is also good fun for adults.

I heard about that before I beat the game, so I thought, what's the big deal? I was actually disappointed by the ending. Then, I beat the game a fifth or sixth time, watching the ending a little more closelier, and started feeling knotty myself. (I think we all need KA (Knot Anonymous) meetings with these dang games, their soul stirring stories, and that music!!)

"popular in France", bro, bro, brah, dude, friend, bro, Asterix is one of the most popular Belgian-French comics in the world. It's popular in a lot of European countries. I can personally attest for Germany. Most bande dessinee are popular in Germany, like Tintin, Lucky Luke and The Smurfs. I also think it's worth mentioning that Asterix and Obelix features actual co-op (and the utterly fantastic soundtrack) The Humans, Cannon Fodder and Worms are certainly computer games, but not PC games. They come from the land called home computer. That's a different thing. Hebereke's Popoitto is very similar to the Puyo Puyo series, of which Mean Bean Machine and more importantly, Kirby's Avalance are a part of. Can't believe you didn't mention the Kirby game. The Cho Aniki series is easily weirder than Parodius, though in a more disturbing way. Got one SFC title. Overall, good video, I'm glad wasn't all about Japanese games that didn't reach America. I'm happily surprised you seemed to enjoy Asterix & Obelix more than me.

+SNES drunk Asterix is huge here. There's also an Asterix theme park in Paris. I still have to check out the last two albums by the new writer's duo. Uderzo's last books were horrible. I always find it funny that Lucky Luke (and in a lesser extent the Bluecoats too which North & South is based on) aren't known in the USA since the stories take place in America (Lucky Luke in the Wild West, Bluecoats is about the Civil War).

Cannon Fodder is an absolutely amazing game and was one of our best loved of all time over here in the U.K it’s simple but highly addictive - to quote the tag line war has never been so much fun! The Amiga is the only way to play it really because of the slightly better graphics and the fact it controls a lot better with a mouse, and it has a disk save as opposed to password, but the snes version has all 30+ missions with a great progressive difficulty and it’ll keep you hooked. Another game that got a release on PAL exclusive was theme park, it’s not the greatest ever and features none stop obnoxious fair ground / clown music looped forever in game, but with a mute button it’s a passable version to say it’s a PC port - similar to doom snes owners just shouldn’t have got it.

The fact that you even mentioned the cricket game brings me tears of joy. And I can understand why Super International Cricket won't come to NA and only released on PAL since baseball is a popular sport on NA. And on PAL region, I think only UK might have got the game cause cricket is a popular sport there.

There was a second episode as an early PS1 release, and not released outside of Japan, but from what I read of it, beside the ability to play in two, it's a worse game: no visual improvements compared to the SNES predecessor, poor level design, poor companion AI when playing solo, and a general lack of polish that makes it look like a rushed production, wasting what would have been a fun setting (a big amusement park on fire, with all the machinery gone crazy)

Cannon Fodder was an amazing game that was fun and got really tough later in the game. For me though, as a kid back then it didn't glorify war but show how bleak and unforgiving it is. Hardly any music in the levels aside from the shooting and death sounds. You grew attached to your soldiers as they climbed up the ranks and when you lost one of them in battle you really felt it and you were reminded of it after battle. This and Terranigma is what's most in my head from back then. Loved them both so much.

Some interesting games in this list. I remember renting Micro Machines back in the day but I wasn't really impressed. I prefer other games like RC Pro-Am for racing in a non-traditional view. I haven't played the SNES version of Asterix & Obelix but the Gameboy port instead and let me tell you, it might be one of the best licensed games ever made. Music is the best I ever heard with chiptunes and both level and enemy design are great. There is also a lot of variety. Only minor things are the controls which take time to get used to and the lack of a save or password feature. I am a little surprised to hear you weren't familiar with Asterix before. It's incredibly popular in Europe and even outside of it. Hyper Dimension is also my favorite DBZ fighting game because of the moves. The desperation attacks are still awesome to watch after all these years! You sure love Terranigma, don't you SNES drunk? It's been the 4th time you mentioned it. Don't get me wrong, I also love that game but seriously we get it.

I think this is the first time I've heard you rank the Soul Blazer trilogy and I agree with your assertion. Terranigma was a masterpiece in almost all aspects (story, music, controls, game play, difficulty). However, while many will disagree I personally find Soul Blazer to be a better game than Illusion of Gaia. Maybe it’s due to the ability to change equipment, perhaps it’s because it has a “traditional” level system or simply because the story, while simplistic, doesn’t take its self too seriously.

'Whirlo', also called Sandler in Japan, is actually a very thoughtfully made, quality platformer. There's a ton of levels and they all have some different twist or gimmick. The game is heartlessly difficult due to one hit death and the fact that there are a whopping 3 different types of super jumps that have to be used in different situations. It requires as much memorization as it does reflexes, but it's unique enough to still keep my attention at least.

Micro machines 2 is a masterpiece and every fan of multiplayer games should play it. It allows up to 4 people to race on a great deal of crazy stages. Plus, the mechanics are amazing, basically you have to leave your opponents behind until they desappear from the screen. It goes without saying that alliances continuously sprung up to stop the first in the rank and they die as suddenly once another one takes his spot. There's one stage in particular that stands out: the sponge level. The cars move throughout a kitchen full of obstacles and then they have to pass the sink, here the sponge acts as a ferry (from which the name of the stage, Ferry Fiasco). Imagine the chaos when the cars get on the sponge and they try to survive while they're pushing each other out mercylessly. There's even a high-risk/high-reward shortcut that allows one to avoid the sponge path! Getting the upperhand because of it when all the other players are battling each other on the sponge is priceless. Do yourself a favor and play this game with your friends! And have a few tokes while you're at it... and some beers!

Warlow is not in my rom set and can't find anything about it online? Edit: it's called Whirlo now Warlow. I'm playing through the game and it's fantastic. Great story and a lot of variety in levels and action. You have several different moves, it's difficult at first but when you get used to the moves and controls you have excellent control and can pull of some fantastic sequences. I'd never heard of the game and after 5/8 worlds - this is a true hidden gem. Even the story is very good and the art is brilliant. There are tonnes of little touches that make you smile - on the pirate level when the ship is sinking at the end, the enemies are filing in to the screen the boss fight was on and jumping off the boat. 😂 I strongly recommend trying Whirlo and sticking with it through the initial learning curve as you get used to the controls. With four different types of jump, it is unlike any other game I've played recently.

The art for the bugs chewing a trees roots under the ground made me 😂 If the game was Nintendo it would be seen as an all time classic and have a long franchise of games where it filled the role as the opposite of Kirby. The number of abilities reminds me of an enhanced version of one of the most fun Kirby abilities, it does feel like a Nintendo game.

As a european/german I've never really thought about, whether or not Asterix & Obelix are a popular thing in the US. In my eurocentristic mindset I simply assumed, that everybody HAD to know about these awesome comics and movies. Just say the word "Passierschein" (meaning: pass certificate) to a random german person and I GUARANTEE you, that they'll ask you (ironically), if you mean the "Passierschein A-38". That's a reference to the movie "The Twelve Tasks of Asterix", where that specific document is a very funny plot device. This has literally JUST happened to a friend and colleague of mine, who comes from Iran.

The Japanese version of Twinbee: Rainbow Bell Adventures is better than the PAL version. It has non-linear level progression (and IIRC there's multiple exits in the levels which were taken out), more dialogue, and the ability to save via battery backup. A fan translation exists for it. A couple nitpicky things: The Parodius game here is actually the second game in the series, not the first. But it is the first on the SNES, so I can give you a pass for that! Also, any reason you mentioned Hebereke's Popoitto but left out Hebereke's Popoon?

Wow. Didn't know Humans was a SNES game. I just thought that it was just on the Nintendo DS. That's the version that I have.

wow. as a European im amazed that we got so many exclusives at the time. especially since we were generally screwed over with the black borders and slower 50hz refresh rates. Also release date delays and games like chrono trigger and ff3 never getting a release here....but hey we got Cannon Fodder which almost makes amends for years of inequality!

Somehow Cannon Fodder passed us Americans by! That seemed like a sure hit.

Hard times for PAL gamers... We got all the releases too late, 50 Hz borders and fewer games. But Ok, nowadays, this does not bother anymore.

@@ChristopherSobieniak It was eventually released in the US on PC, Jaguar, and 3DO. I'm kind of surprised nobody bothered to port it to Playstation or Saturn because it was well received on pretty much every platform it appeared on.
