I crunched some loose numbers a few days ago on the cost of the clone army (just the troopers, birth to battlefield). I think it came to +500 trillion USD/GRC(?) which may seem like a lot until you factor in the economic yearly output of just earth alone (~48 trillion). Consider that there are thousands of planets and systems that make probably even half that amount, while a few that make waaaaaay more, suddenly the clone army which consisted of about 2 billion troops seems a little more freezable.

Kinda sad that Aliance Navy from Mass Effect, or X-Com are not included. By my opinion, those are some of the most underrated military forces in sci-fi.

John Ringo had a good take on XT combat. His series on the Posleen Wars is one of the best military sci-fi epics I've ever read. He's ex 82nd so understands the military world view.

As much as I love the Imperial Guard, I wouldn't consider them part of the "space marines" level of the other armies in this video. It would be like comparing the Imperial Army to the Stormtrooper Corps in Star Wars. Then again, comparing any of these other armies to the Adeptus Astartes, would be like comparing NBA pros to a grade school basketball team.

Good points overall, but the M56 smart gun is not a stupid weapon. The harness and HUD allow it to be used from the hip. Though it is a long weapon, they wear it with the center of the gun at their hip. This makes it able to pivot at sharper angles than a shoulder fired rifle, thus reducing its clunkieness. Not only that but from the looks of it, the mechanical arms seem to redistribute the weight to the body to the harness, there by balancing the weight on the marines center of gravity. As someone that has worked in a stock room, I can tell you balancing heavy objects, like on my shoulder, greatly reduces the strain of toting it around. James Cameron is not a perfect man, but he is the Maestro when it comes to sci-fi tech.

The M35 "M-Galaxy" Lasgun(standard issue) is capable of blasting humans limbs off with one shot and piercing space marine armor (usually through weak but still impressive)it also never jams can act as a frag grenade if needed and can mount a bayonet it is weak in universe not compared to any of the standard weapons used by most of these armies The imperial guard also deploys multiple regiments at once since each regiment has an ideal form of combat(catachans jungle fighters are experts of guerrilla warfare individual fighters have killed carnifexes, lictors, warbosses, etc) that way each regiment can cover their flaws a deployment of catachans and kriegsmen will overpower the clones easily as the mechanized trench warfare of the death korps will outlast any clone emplacements and the catachans would be able assassinate and sabotage any key units or facilities granted the imperial guard would suffer higher casualties but seeing as there’s about 30 trillion total guardsmen a couple million dead means very little in the long run Also the imperial guard doesn’t have worse technology just limited tech this is important to understand because a leman russ spearhead with nova cannons will shred any armor like paper All of this is ignoring the imperial guard aren’t space marines I know why you left out the adeptus astartes but there’s also the tempestus scions which are space marines specifically highly trained imperial guardsmen with better armor and guns Also psykers are strong enough to kill jedi(they might perils in the process but that’s why you have a commissar nearby) so enemy morale will drop quick if these guys are deployed At the end of the day 40k will almost always be on top in the case of sci-fi factions(unless we’re talking Cthulhu level armies in which case only war in heaven armies can compare) due to the absurd scale and bs power 40k factions have that’s part of its appeal the best way I’ve heard 40k described is if a universe was designed by a bunch of “no my guy has a bulletproof force field” kids(we all know the type) which ends up making any comparison of other sci-fi universes pretty anticlimactic and mildly infuriating I was introduced to 40k through one of these debates I know the answer unfortunately

I would argue that the clone troopers being born and raised by the same people who train them for war is similar to the Spartan method training in which every male child was property of the state and raised first and foremost to be a soldier in the army. The difference is, the Spartans also learned enough letters, numbers, and, if necessary, statecraft that they could continue to function if they lived long enough to retire from the army. Clones, between the commission of the GAR and their short lifespans, were going to die young even if they survived the war.

Also: It's always a bit funny when people paint the persians in the greek-persian wars as monstrous enemies. Yes - they were the aggressors, but when you look at their society, their values did correspond more with those of modern western societies, than some of the greek citystates.

In the novel, the mobile infantry equipped each soldier with what amounts to a Gundam with multiple pocket nukes. Might make a subtle difference..

Power level is a little high for "space marines" (Star Wars Clone Troopers) who were only utilized for 13 years whereas the Guard have been holding the line for 10,000 years.

@1:11:00 fact check the AK-47 was not chambered in 7.62 NATO. It was only fairly recently that we got an AKM rifle chambered in 7.62 NATO. Secondary issue 7.62x51 chambered battle rifles aren't favored purely for their increased effectiveness against armor, they're bigger selling point is actually they're greater effectiveness at increased range over 5.56x45 or 7.62x39 weapons. While the M85b is undeniably chunky for a light infantry weapon it does have two huge advantages over modern weapons using the 762x51 cartridge. Even when fired fully automatic the M85b has negligible recoil, and it can be fired cyclically for indefinite periods of time without overheating. Also there's the lack of hot gas escaping from the ejection port, that's a huge improvement for a bullpup.

I am happy simply because you guys actually pointed out correctly something almost every content creator get wrong about Starship Troopers society. Service in the military is not the only way to obtain citizenship. So many creators think it is when they make videos of the universe and that shows they either didn't do enough research on one of the biggest factors of the Federation, Or they don't care.

I feel like the helmet thing with Rico is a bit overestimated. Yes he took it off the guy during a live fire exercise, but iirc it was because the guy couldn't see, and they weren't in a spot that enemy fire was likely to hit them. Then the person on their own side falls and fires their gun wildly, and shoots him in the face. And that shot in the face hit his eye, which wasn't protected by the helmet.

Counterpoint to the Clone Trooper lifespan: Pretty sure they weren't meant to survive to see old age. One huge push to take over and then they're disposable, which is a lot easier to do when they've been raised to do nothing but follow orders.

I mean I may be not getting something but what is the issue with platoon sizes? If its a small platoon and you don't have enough just deploy more platoons. It is not always the case that the bigger the platoon the better its purely a matter of organisation and command structure. In fact in history we see that platoon sizes have decreased drastically not because of manpower issues but they are just more effective if organised that way then again I might of misunderstood the point on platoons.

As much as I love Star Wars, the Astartes are literally the grandchildren of a GOD-LIKE BEING (who then became an *actual* god) they are gigantic beasts with the best armor mankind can offer, the best weapons it can offer, their minds are incredibly powerful, and their tactics were written by Rowboat Girlyman (Papa Smurf) or their respective Primarchs. An Astartes could snap all of these space marines backs with ease. There’s a clear reason why they weren’t on this list.

Don't know if you have had these offered for you to look at, but you could take a look at the CoDominium Marines from Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's "Future History" works. An indication of what they are like: the CD Marines, especially the Line Marines, are descended mainly from the French Foreign Legion, and have preserved many of their traditions and attitudes.

the training rate in my country is 6 months for regular troops Army, Air Force, Navy (Marines) and if ur feeling up to it you can go for another 6 months if u get selected for any spec ops regimen

Goes to show how close it is between the Clone Troopers and the Imperial Guard, I like the Guard better just for the fact that they had seen the worst, Clone Trooper had mostly fought either humanoids or droid enemies, you take some Imperial Guard in the star wars universe and fought what the Clones fought, a Guardsman will be thinking "Wait, since when we get breaks in a war?"

To be fair towards the starship trooper writer, nuclear fission and fusion are amazing scientific breakthroughs and fantastic for power generation. I’m also not a fan of how we only seem to recognize “nuclear” as “bomb” and not the amazing scientific process that is misused to make that bomb.

Alright C’mon man, the MA5B arguments aren’t really valid. So firstly, yes the MA5B is a big boy, but considering that Humanity is fighting enemies that range from 5 foot(Grunts)-To 8 foot(Elites)-To 12 Foot(Hungers) Tall and have armor and weapon advancements beyond our comprehension. It would make sense to have a, yes large and cumbersome weapon, but with so much Ammo Capacity a massive round like 7.62x51mm. I know this may not matter but, the developers weren’t looking for that “realistic” tone at the time and it was meant to be “out of this world”(Pun may or may not have been intended), and it fulfilled that. And to add upon that, You’re wrong about the MA5B’s specs in some degrees, I’m not sure of the true ranges of the rifle and what not but, to my knowledge the user usually has a HUD display reticle and the MA-series have flip up iron sights, at least later models and you definitely see that the rifle has slimmed down since the first Halo. The rifle also definitely has a single fire mode, a burst/semi-auto fire mode, and the full auto. This is confirmed in the Halo Novels, like that of The Fall Of Reach and Contact Harvest. Not to mention, in Harvest Pvt. Jenkins was hitting shots at the range at very good distances and displayed “sharpshooter” accuracy according to a commanding officer. The MA37(Halo Reach) definitely looks way more realistic and the Halo 4/5 Rifles definitely look like a better choice over the hefty MA5B. C’mon, that can’t be a con or something. and You chose the earliest version of the weapon(in terms of Halo games and the release dates). If You chose the Halo 3-5(Including Reach) rifles, you’d most likely have to find some other “problems” with it then. The MA seen in Halo 5 Is probably the best performing and realistic of the games/rifles. and you can’t factor in gameplay balancing as that’s not true to the lore. let me explain that last bit, for example, The Assault Rifle(Like The Halo 3 through Halo 5 Rifles) fire at 750- 900 rpm lore wise but in the games they fire slower than that. Relating to the stagnation of weapons technology and development, Humanity hit a point of peace for about 200 years or so when exploring and colonizing the galaxy and with that said, had no need to create more destructive weapons. And The calibers of the guns don’t really add up with performance, yea the covenants shields and armor are strong and stuff but for the most part, if you read the books(or view any other form of media, Like for instance Halo Legends) and exclude gameplay again, The weapons and Halo perform realistically(if i could say that) and do what they are supposed to do. The 7.62x51 round does a great job at taking out Grunts, Jackals, Brutes, Elites and Even Hunters(of course their backside) just exclude accuracy aside and just have the Chief making shots and he is usually able to do so without much problems. And The Sniper Rifle being the only “consistent weapon” isn’t true as, the larger caliber guns like the massive 12.7x40mm(and 12.7x30mm) M6 series pistols are very effective. And the larger 9.5x40mm rounds out of the Battle Rifle are very powerful. Thing is bigger and longer in diameter and length than a 7.62x39(AK bullet) so that should put it into perspective. The Warthog is literally just meant to appeal to use for gameplay purposes, and they are other vehicles in lore but the Warthog is meant as a Scout or Light Armored vehicle, not a main assault vehicle. And warthogs flipping over again is halo physics lol not real life. Marine armor can in lore, stop covenant weaponry, of course in certain areas. Specifically the chest plate, In lore Marines(and ODST’s) are seen many times with bullet holes, plasma scorches and burns on their armor and alive and well.
