I DIDN’T MENTION THIS IN THE VIDEO, but keep in mind that it generally take a lot more power to produce lower frequencies, so if you want to set you crossover below 80Hz, it may be best to get an amp, so it doesn’t put a strain on your receiver.
In this video I go over how to find the best crossover settings for your speakers.
This is the first video in the Home Theater 101 series, designed to help you learn more about how to get the most out of your system.

What a superb video. I’ve just upgraded my amp and subwoofer that had more settings than my previous amp and sub. Wasn’t sure what was what, but ran an auto calibration and it sounded amazing. Had seen all these crossover settings but was never sure what it meant and the stuff on the internet wasn’t easy to read. Your video was such a breath of fresh air and it made perfect sense. I’ve now adjusted the crosssover on my amp and sub and it now sounds phenomenal and the annoying sub that went into auto standby has stopped now. Keep up the good work, you’re a natural in front of the camera, very well presented and delivered that makes perfect sense. 👍🏻

You called it with the 60hz recommendation for the RP600M. Before putting some hours on them they were fine at 80hz right out the box but over time i wondered why the bass-midbass punch was subdued and i realized because of my lowered subwoofer levels 70hz had no presence. Now I'm really loving 60hz for music listening but will the experience be the same for movies, guess I'll see this weekend. Again great call👍🏿

Thanks for the educational video. Here is a quick question regarding the "cut off at the knees" argument for the tower speakers that go down to 32 Hz. Couldn't one make the same argument for the sub? In other words, if my sub goes up to 150 Hz, why cut it off at the knees by setting the crossover all the way down at 60 Hz? Why not set my crossover to 100 Hz, and let my powered sub handle more of the bass that it is specifically designed to handle, which also frees up my receiver's power to focus more on the mid and high range frequencies handled by my front main speakers? (Assuming there aren't directional issues by setting the crossover that high.) Thank in advance if you respond.

Question - I have Klipsch In wall side surround R3650 - Freq response from 60hz -20KHS. What does it mean when I set that crossover at 80 vs 100 vs 120hz? Does setting at 100hz mean that it will roll off for anything below 100HZ? What is be best setting for this speaker - would you say set it at 90hz which is 10 above recommended? It seems like I get more surround sound playing through them set at 120hz vs 100 hz.

If it is ideal to set speakers in the receiver to small and direct anything less than 80/90 Hz to the sub then what is the advantage/point of getting a tower speaker over a bookshelf? This is an honest question. I just bought a pair of SVS Ultra Towers, should I set them to "small" and 80Hz also? My amp for driving the towers is an emotiva xpa-dr2 at 550w per channel.

How to set my surround and center speaker crossover if in speaker specification say that: center and surround frequency range 150 Hz-20.000 Hz? 80 - 120 Hz isn't too low if the frequency range of the speakers is between 150-20,000 Hz?

If I make them SMALL, will it be Ok? Will there be any difference in the overall output? My subwoofer crossover is set to 80 Hz in AVR.
@tHAvIlLaMaN
@tHAvIlLaMaN 5 лет назад
Great! There won’t be any change in the output of your speakers when they’re set to small. You’ll just be able to apply the crossover to them. Your towers should be set to about 60Hz. You could try 40Hz too, but that’s pushing it. Your center should be crossed at 80hz

@MrKenn1230 4 года назад
Audyssey is not fool-proof. Change your crossover to 80Hz as a starting point and make sure the speakers were set to "Small" -if they are set to "Large", change them to small. If your bookshelf speakers have low power handling and/or small woofers (or seem to be struggling), you may want to try a 90HZ crossover

This is especially because even though they only go down to 45 hz, my receiver doesn't cut off the subwoofer for the front LRs like it does for all the other channels when setting them to large.

Wondering if subwoofers like Klipsch r-115SW are gonna give any kind of distort in loud volumes while having that kind of lowpass and crossover while maintaining default volume Level. Say on an explosion in a movie or a deep bass drop in songs.

No problem. Glad I could help. You can start at 40Hz and see how you like it. Just know that the lower the crossover is, the more power your speakers will need. So you might want an amp if you don’t have one already. With those speakers tho, I think the highest crossover you should have is 60Hz

Good day, Sir. Question: I am currently moving into a new place and need to buy a home theater setup. I saw the Yamaha setup but can also consider either Onkyo or Pioneer (depending on their recievers and dolby atmos performance.) I also don't want to drill holes in the ceiling or walls for speakers, so it will need to be a 5.1 setup with upward firing speakers supporting the front two. Which brand do you recommend for optimal performance? (I listen to music more than movies...with some games involved.) Thanks.

What is the meaning of +/- 3db? I’m running a Klipsch 7.2.4 system, two rp280f, a 450c, 4 250s for surround and 2 115sw. I’m pushing them with the Yamaha cx-a5100 and mx-a5000. I’ve had my setup for about two years now and generally ran all my speakers small at 80hz but want to play around with it to see if I can get a better or deeper sound, sometimes and with some movies my center channel seems low and has to be turned up. I’ve always run YPAO to set it up. I put my towers at 40hz (rated at 32hz) and my center at 80hz (rated at 58), when you say being careful not to go above or below the +/- 3db point do you mean if is rated at for example 30, make sure I don’t within that 6db window of the lowest or highest rating of your particular speaker? I get a lot of info from your videos, just looking for a clearer, lamer understanding. Thanks!

the +/-3db made by the speaker manufacturer is to let you know when the speaker changes from a flat frequency response enough that it could be audible. The high and low numbers (e.g. 30-15,000) are very important because they usually mean that the speaker's response starts to drop off at those frequencies by design. In other words, if your speakers roll off at 60 HZ (60 Hz -3db), what VillaMan was saying is don't set your crossover below 60 because your speaker is naturally rolling off- choose a higher crossover point to make sure your speakers are flat (accurate) at your chosen crossover point.

Small with a crossover of 80Hz. If it’s set to large then the crossover won’t have an effect

Awesome video! Have some Klipsch r28f for my front towers - had them at 80Hz crossover and just took them down to 40 (spec sheet says 35Hz-24kHz with LFE of 32Hz) and set my Klipsch sub (10” wireless one - can’t remember exact model number) to 120Hz. Looking forward to listening after the adjustment! Probably won’t be able to tell much of a difference given my untrained ear, but it’s good to know they’ll be setup as optimally as they can! Thanks!

Hello, great video very helpful but just wanted to know if you could help me out. I own the Definitive Technology Demand 9 Bookshelf speakers, Total Frequency: 44 Hz - 24,000 Hz AND Lower and Upper -3dB limits : 64 Hz - 22,000 Hz. What would you recommend for my crossover? Maybe 80 hz? or 60 hz? Thank You! ✌

You should do a video on all of the surround formats. I'm still on standard Dolby digital and am happy with it, I use my speakers mainly for stereo music so it's not a big deal for me.

Hey! The calibration should determine your db level for your speakers as well as the delay. Set your crossover to 80Hz movies. Music is a personal preference thing

Great video but there are two other considerations for setting subwoofer crossover- Ultimate linear output and amplifier power requirements. Bass places the most demand on speaker drivers and amplifier power. While using the lower range of your speaker could work acoustically at lower levels, subwoofers are made with higher power internals amplifiers and drivers engineered to be more linear at lower frequencies and higher output. Having higher crossover points and setting your speakers to small can greatly increase your lower bass output and accuracy as well as clean up the mid bass output of your mains. A side benefit is that power-hungry bass frequencies are handled by your sub's larger specialized internal amp lowering the power requirements from your receiver.

Exactly my thoughts. I was shocked when he said his mains were crossed at 60 or 40 on what appears to be a Denon AVR. Unless he's running a separate amp, wouldn't that be robbing some major wattage from an AVR that likely advertises misleading watts per channel to begin with? I don't have a separate amp (yet) so I let my subs cover the majority of the lows to get the most watts from the speakers and cleanest sound/ no clipping at high volume.

Hey! That’s the the 504C in the video. I used it 60Hz, 80hz and full range, and it sounded good with everyone one of them. I suggest trying out those and see how you like it. Especially if you have it connected to an amp. If you don’t have an amp then stick to 60Hz or 80Hz.

I have a Denon X3500H (105watts) RP8000F and old Boston acoustic subwoofer 100watts. Audyssey set crossovers fronts to large at 40Hz Full Band, center at 60Hz, surround L&R at 80Hz, and surround back at 90Hz are set to small... I notice when my sub was set to LEF I didnt hear any bass from it. So I switch it over to LFE+Main now I hear bass from the subwoofer..

If I set my LFE + Main to 120hz, and my mains set to large, 60hz, will my mains still play down to 60? I guess I dont fully understand LFE setting on my Denon
@justinletwinsky
@justinletwinsky 5 лет назад
Yes... AND all of the frequencies that are below 120Hz (your crossover setting) that are sent to your Mains (Mains = any speaker set to "Large") will also be sent to the Sub(s) as well. Alternatively, if speakers are set to "Small", all frequencies below crossover points will be sent to subwoofers ONLY and will not be played through the "small speaker". Again, if speakers set to "Large", all frequencies below crossover points will be played with "said speaker" (down to it's rated freq response capability) AND will also be sent to subwoofers. Note: Setting a speaker to "small" does NOT mean you have little speakers...it is just a way to tell the receiver if you want that speaker to handle low freqs or not. When/Why would anyone want to do this? Rule of thumb: if you have awesome sub(s) then you want to subs to take most of the load (the lower end bass freqs), so set all speakers to "small" and let the sub do the work for the crossover freqs and below (this free's up the mids/lower woofers on your other speakers so they don't distort the other "higher" freqs trying come out of the same "cone") When setup like this, I also like to crank up my subs a little more than the rest of the other speakers (I like to FEEL the bass with movies...I can do this successfully and not distort the dialog and other sound effects because the subs are the only speaker handling the bass). If your subs are average (my opinion: average sub = any sub with a RMS less than 300W or a sub that can't handle freqs below 27Hz or so...again, just MY opinion) AND you have other speakers that are rated to handle freqs below your crossover setting, then set those speakers to "Large" so that they will play freqs below the crossover setting down to their rated low-end frequency response WHILE ADDITIONALLY those freqs will also be sent to the sub(s). With all speakers/subs set at the same volume, this will provide assistance to your sub and will give you more "oomph" in your overall setup. Hope this helps! Also, I welcome additional comments in case I misstated anything, or anyone has some other good advise from personal experience.

You set the crossovers for your speakers in the receiver settings. The only change you need to make to your sub is to set the Lowpass to the max like I did in the video. Then you go in the receiver settings and set the subwoofer’s LPF to 120hz. That’s it

Should I auto calibrate my home reciever and just go with the results ? Run your receiver calibration. Take a look at the suggested settings from the calibrations- speakers should be "small" and crossovers should be set to 60-100 HZ. If they are not, change the speakers to small and change the crossover to 80HZ. If your speakers sound strained, raise the crossover to 90-100HZ.
