It's not that he picks the right players to send in...any manager would have sent the bench strikers to try the last minute equalizer. What his magic is is that he makes those players enter the game with such confidence that their 10 minutes or 15 minutes or even 5 minutes will be the minutes that can turn the fate of the match around. Look at other managers that don't prepare the mentality of the players they sub in and those players are sad and annoyed to be thrown in so late they don't even bother to much to play. For Ancelotti, he makes the players feel it's an honor to give them 10 minutes chance to prove themselves, and they must try their best to repay his confidence. Did anyone see Chupo-Moting play like this could be the game of his career ? No. Joselu did !

One reason is to have fresh legs, the second is because they’re taller players to provide defence against corners which was their first play (Kane is an inch taller than Muller but obviously tired). They were very likely instructed to do defensive work primarily. The third reason I think is to waste those few seconds of time which could make the difference, because Tuchel probably thought he had it in the bag.
