Dark Knight had the best acting performance ever. It was the highest grossing film ever for a while. It's just a fun movie. That's what makes a great summer blockbuster.

Screen Junkies this totally should have gone to Back to the Future, this was the movie that inspired a generation to fall in love the supernatural/science movies. plus I've actually watched this again yesterday and it holds up! when Marty's Dad punches the bully (Biff) it's just so satisfying :) Ghost busters is a close second so no complains. nice fight :)

Very subjective, nostalgia gets tossed in there, the question becomes "which of the movies most closely embodies what it means to see a massive summer film? Which one has all the elements we want to see in a summer blockbuster?"

DerBegginBlue No, overrated means it's not as funny as people claim, it's really dated, not very quotable, filled with plot holes and, outside of Murray, its characters are not very interesting. I feel most people who love Ghostbusters saw it when they were kids and it has that nostalgic effect on them. That film is really flawed.

DoctorXander In my opinion the perfect summer movie must have lots of laughs and great, fun action and ghostbusters has all of that. Even though i think star wars is a better film in general, ghostbusters as a whole is a better summer movie. Ghostbusters gets my pick.

+Peter Williams I did"t find any of the characters interesting in the slightest and the humour barely made me even crack a smile. The tone constantly shifted from a comedy to a horror and the ghosts were completely wasted. Still if you like it that"s fine.

El Presidente Meanwhile Marvel is delivering consistent aces with the exception of Iron Man 2 and the Hulk, while simultaneously building a lore with each movie that builds into an expanding plotline outside of each movie. I can't comprehend people even comparing the cinematic universes of each franchise.

Rohan Mital dude best doesn't mean totally on sales yes its a factor, but you have to look into this firstly it was an new ip, movie wise also I think pulp culture wise guardians had a larger effect. Then you got quality which is measured by expectations which gotg did defiantly while transformers has done meh and hell no. also u have to look at will people in future years be excited about the movie like now most likely gotg but not transformers.Its only popular because of the Asian market which its been established for years while gotg probably didn't have as much attention.

The first Avengers doesn't deserve the praise it gets. Now The only marvel movies that could go up against TDK would be The Winter Soldier, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy (maybe), and Age of ultron (some may disagree with this one. Yea it had its flaws and it was a little disappointing, but I still thought it was pretty solid superhero film)

I know how much hate this is going to get, but Star Wars is EXTREMELY dated. Still good story telling, good world building, but boy is it dated. I didn't see it until I was in college, and man... the light saber battles look like backyard reenactments, the AT ATs look like toys, the whole trash compactor scene makes no effort to hide the amount of foam and cardboard used to create it... it just looks cheesy and dated. W/e, bring it on nerds.

DNAlien I'm not buying this at all. Look at all the other movies to come out during that same time period and see how well they hold up. In comparison, Star Wars feels so incredibly modern and the effects are still believable and impressive. Some blockbusters today have worse effects than Star Wars and most blockbusters from the 90's or even the early 2000's are more dated than it. It's damn unbelievable that the movie holds up as well as it does.

DNAlien the hilts also incorporated old parts from cameras, they would break if you actually hit something with them, it was a curious mix of practical effect with some movie magic, in fact most of the film was done entirely with practical effects. A pupped for yoda, models for the star ships, models for the walkers, if memory serves one of the few non practical effects was the blaster shots and some other rudimentary things, most of what you see on screen was actually there when they filmed it.

Star Wars is the ultimate summer blockbuster for me because it's the only movie that's created such a rich mythology and culture. Batman was already established by the time Batman and The Dark Knight came out. Jaws defined the term blockbuster but culturally all it has to this day is the movie itself, more or less. It hasn't dominated every medium the way Star Wars has. Even after all the video games, novels, comics, prequels and cartoons, only the SURFACE of Star Wars' potential has been scratched. The recent trailer for The Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion pack for The Old Republic PC game added a compelling layer of mythology that felt fresh and new in less than five minutes. Totally unexpected. Star Wars runs so deep it could give Greek and Egyptian mythology a run for their money. Ghostbusters has an extended universe but not that extensive.

I actually have no idea how the Avengers beat the Dark Knight. The Dark Knight is a better blockbuster with better acting, a better screenplay and more visceral and impactful action. It's a goddamn joke.

Yeah I understand that, but for me, a Summer blockbuster is meant to be more action-based as opposed to fun-based. The Dark Knight has the better action in my opinion; the Avengers is just filled with CGI Chiaturi, whereas the Dark Knight will hold up a lot more as an action film.

I'm saying the action was more visceral and powerful in the Dark Knight. You felt every punch in the Dark Knight and, most importantly, pretty much all of the action scenes were real with minimal CGI. There is a lot more action in the Avengers, but it's mainly kind of cheap with Iron Man and Thor punching CGI Chitauri that doesn't actually have much of an impact.

Ryan Barnett I completely agree that The Dark Knight is better than the avengers. There's no comparison, the acting, writing, the villain, the complexity of story is top notch in TDK. However, summer blockbusters are supposed to be more "fun" the successful ones tend to be a simpler story with great action and humor. The avengers fits that bill more so than TDK the argument isn't what is the best movie, it's what is the best summer movie.

I think the reason everyone thinks it's really good is that it brought together some of the most iconic superheros in history in just one movie. Nothing like that has ever been done before so that's why it made $1.5 billion in the box office. Even though I am a die-hard marvel fan, I do agree that The Avengers is a BIT overrated. The Winter Soldier was much better and that movie deserves more praise.

I love Ghostbusters, I really do, but it shouldn't have gone past Raiders of the Lost Ark. Raiders is damn near perfect. Not only one of the best summer blockbusters ever, but one of the best movies ever, period. It would have been my choice for #1.

***** it was ground breaking for its time, before it you really didnt have very many films set in a space setting with the scope of star wars, other than the effects and acting it is a fairly classic 'Heroes Journey' type of story, if one doesnt like the heroes journey then the plot will likely not interest them very much. This is all the original of course, the second and third were made as a set similarly to matrix reloaded and revolutions vs just the matrix, working with things introduced in the second film to further the plot of the third one and culminating in a grand end. The prequels of course threw this out the window and I will not discuss those.

"Night Falls: Summer Adventures" - The acting from De Niro and Pacino is unrivaled through decades of filmmaking. You could compare this to Shawshank or Clockwork Orange or The Godfather; but you'd be, truly, underselling this work. I watch this blockbuster 4-5 times a week. Can't wait for the next installment in this franchise, especially at the peaks of Bob and Al's careers. 10/10

I'm sorry no, The Dark Knight is a superior movie to Avengers. Avengers is lots of fun yes, but it has too much reliance on CGI, which will look dated a few years from now. The Dark Knight however uses predominantly practical effects, so it will age nicely - and it's message on terrorism is still as relevant as ever, with one of the greatest villains of all time in the Joker. It was the movie that proved that superhero films can be a serious work of art.

Evelina999 I don't care. Just because a movie is more fun doesn't mean it's better. I like unconventional movies and TV-shows that can really surprise you and that sticks out. That's entertainment to me. The Avengers doesn't really do a good job of doing that. It's basically the exact movie that you'd expect. The Dark Knight surprises you. It's not quite what you expect. And it got way better writing, acting, cinematography and action than The Avengers. At least in my opinion.

A movie being dated or timeless is irrelevant to the question: what's the best summer blockbuster of all time? Star Wars is because it changed the way people look at movies and started the summer blockbuster merchandising bonanza. Every film is just a product of its time and no movie had more impact when it came out than Star Wars. I love Ghostbusters but it didn't set the world on fire the same way like SW did in '77.

I saw all of these when they came out (I'm aging myself!) Ghostbusters made me giggle and jump, especially the library scene, but Star Wars (at the drive-in) left me breathless and in awe. Nothing can compare to that feeling. This was fun guys, thanks.

Man, I remember going to go see Spider man 2 when I was younger. Definitely one of my favorite blockbusters. Also, Star Wars should've one, but at least Doug and Nick might have a little bromance.

Jurassic Park is my best summer blockbuster, cause i grew up with dinosaurs and seeing Jurassic Park just made me more passionate about them, heck i still watch it to this compared to any other summer blockbuster!

There are so many films that I would've chose over Star Wars and one specific film wasn't in this video and it is the highest grossing animated film of 2004, Shrek 2! Shrek 2 is by far the best in the series it has absolutely everything from action, comedy, love and a drama! It is a film for all of the family, whether you're two or ninety two I can assure you Shrek two is the most fun filled summer blockbuster of all time... (discounting the fact it spawned Shrek Forever After)

I grew up watching VHS taped versions of Star Wars and Ghostbusters. I was only old enough to remember when Ghostbusters 2 was in theaters. That said, Ghostbusters visual effects would not exist if it were not for Star Wars, as the team behind Star Wars completely revolutionized the entire idea and filming process of visual effects, Period. So, even though I absolutely love both films and grew up watching them, I have to say there is no other choice but Star Wars in this as Star Wars opened the doors to visual effects that weren't even comprehended, nor considered, before. I dare to say that if it were not for Star Wars, Ghostbusters may not have been filmed in the current version we see and love today.

Star Wars is the #1 greatest movie of all time, period! Without it you wouldn't have had the effects for Ghostbusters or Jurassic Park as well as all other movies. The story is timeless, the characters are iconic and everything just built up in the perfect storm to create a movie that people still hold in high regard today over 30 years later. By the way, did all of you know that Jurassic Park initially wanted to use stop motion for the dinosaurs because they felt that CGI wouldn't work but Industrial Light in Magic convinced them otherwise, and when was Industrial created? Thats right during Star Wars.
