"Always do this with your doctor's permission?" If I wanted to live my life and take care of my health with my doctor's permission, I would've been dead by now.
I suffered from acid reflux for decades. I had to sleep on a wedge pillow and ended up in the ER with unbearable pain 3 times over 10 years. What finally worked for me was taking a DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) every morning. After 3 weeks, I was basically cured. I sleep flat on a normal pillow now and haven’t had anything more than minor indigestion for over 4 years. Regular licorice root can be toxic! DGL is just licorice with the toxic component removed so it is much safer long term.
I am at my wits end have had heartburn for over 30 years and taken pantoprazole. But now nothing works my oesophagus and throat is on fire all of the time and the bottom of my rib cage burns. I sleep on 4 Pillows with another behind my back. Don't get a lot if sleep 😢. I have had 2 trips to ED. I have tried various dietary things with no success. I am willing to try anything. Thank you for your post, realky hoping this will work. 😊
@@mytwocentsworth- Try chewing on a DGL 1/2 hour before every meal, and have your last meal at least 4 hours before going to bed. DGL can interact with some medications so make sure you check with your doctor, first. Good luck!
Thanks for this info, I’ll definitely be checking out the supplements you mentioned! I’ve recently (slowly) weaned off PPIs & switched to Pepcid after having a GI scope & finding out I have several large stomach polyps. I’ve been on PPIs for too long (20+ yrs) for bad reflux that also affects my asthma. I’m hopeful, since finding your channel, that I’ll be able to find relief!
@@liezlsandoval4458 A lot better. I haven't been taking the slipper elm as much, but instead I've been focusing more on eating foods that don't cause me pain and discomfort. Also incorporating relaxing activities to help lower my stress, since I've noticed stress triggers my stomach to feel horrible!
@@joanne798 hi how’s everything going .. same here stres triggers my gut and the stress can be torture I end up getting acid reflux burning sensation upper stomach what exactly where your symptoms
@@patriciajones8543 It's similar for me, but I also get chest pain caused by the acid reflux and my stomach will start to hurt terribly. At some points it's a stabbing pain. I also will get very bloated. But I don't know for sure if some of my symptoms are due to IBS.
Just finally tried DGL chews as well as some aloe Vera juice a few hours ago to help with my acid reflux. I’ve been taking Zegrid and Prilosec for over 10 years and tonight was the first time I was able to feel relief without a PPI after my reflux began to flare. Thanks for sharing!
SO thankful for your videos/channel! 💜 I’m from the UK and my acid reflux symptoms all started about 2 months ago. I took a new medication for pain relief (I have Fibromyalgia)…which was an NSAID. I reacted badly to the one pill and since then I’ve had awful reflux daily…no matter if I eat or not. Constant burning throat, sour taste, heartburn and liquid in the back of my throat. It sucks. What’s worse is that I struggled with Anorexia for several years and I am at a good place with that now - a healthy weight and eating properly and mentally I’m okay. I really don’t want this stupid acid reflux to be the beginning of an eating disorder relapse because I’ve worked so hard to get better. Thanks sooo much for all your tips and advice. I am watching all your videos now! Unfortunately two different PPI’s didn’t work for me so I’ve weaned off them and am trying the natural root now! Funnily enough I bought this exact slippery elm and licorice root! I have a question because I’ve read so many contradictory things about this: you say to take them on an empty stomach for best results. Some things I’ve read say that slippery elm is best to have after eating because it forms a layer on top of the acid after food to stop it escaping? I don’t know which thing makes most sense because both sound right to me haha. Thanks so much in advance, I hope you’re able to reply! You’re awesome. Love from the UK!
I use Deglycyrrhizinated licorice, DGL Licorice, also available on Amazon because this form of Licorice helps to prevent undesirable side effects, such as hypertension and edema, according to NIH. By removing a substantial amount of a substance called glycyrrhizin. This makes DGL safer for long-term use and has less interactions with medical conditions or medications than licorice extract
Thank you miss 4 your videos. I just want to tell you you make great videos I really enjoy watching them. Subscribed to you a couple months ago and just started watching your videos. I myself suffer from gerd so your videos are a great help. Keep the videos coming I appreciate all the effort and heart you put into it. I'm also very happy 4 you that you are feeling better in terms of acid reflux. Wish you the best of health and a nice day or evening ❤
Your my favorite person to listen to talk about acid reflux, and I love your ig page, I'm on the same perception meds you were on, I have been taking them four weeks now and my cough still isn't gone it's much better than before I'm not chocking any more. I have changed my diet too. I will look into the slippery elm and licorice root ❤️
Love your videos! Will be asking my doctor about these supplements! The throat coat tea was a trigger for me unfortunately but so is ginger/ACV so it might just be different for my reflux issues!
Don't be daff .... doctors know nothing about natural cures .... and all they say is to avoid them .... here take this toxic drug .... so the RX can make more $$$
My traditional Chinese Doctor and a few doctors said Senna in Smooth Move tea is actually not good for long term use because the side effects are “make your intentions black color “ and “weakened intestinal motility”.
Thanks Molly. These are all great suggestions. All symptoms lead to this condition. My doctor also mentioned that it might be that also because I was constantly clearing my throat and forcing a dry cough to clear my throat. I’m in great shape otherwise, but this has been a new condition over the past month. I eat well, healthy but do like my read wine 🍷 steaks and good cheese. I wanted your opinion also on the use of psyllium husk powder. Just wondering. Thanks so much. 🙏🏼
Psyllium husk is essentially a type of fiber - can be great for preventing constipation and diarrhea! I have not seen it been used acid reflux. Hope this helps!
Very useful information Molly . I suffer with GERD , constipation and a very itchy and inflamed throat . I am on pantoprazole and want to get off it . I am taking some Apple Cider Vinegar and some Slippery Elm . I was wondering about the DGL Licorice . My doctor approves of the Slippery Elm but not the DGL . Maybe I should give it a try . It is a god video anyway . Well done.
Gordon - I have been taking omeprazole for about 15 years 20 mg every day or second day and on occasions 2 a day. I tried ACV, ACL and others which worked for a while but came back. However now I only have fresh garlic. Once a day before my lunch I cut a segment in half and cut it into small tablet sizes and swallow whole. It has been working for 2 weeks now, I do have to take gaviscon sometimes though to coat my throat. There are many health benefits to garlic. When taking just be careful to make sure you don't have blood pressure problems or anything like that though. I also now put a slice of lemon in a cup of hot water to clean out kidneys and bladder. Oranges are good for constipation too. I have one large orange a day.
I started taking slippery elm for quite some time now and haven’t had an attack since! Thank you. I just wanna ask if you are still taking it now? For how long have you been taking it? And for how long CAN we take it? Thank you so much, your videos have been a great help! ♥️
wow that’s amazing! i take it if i have a flare occasionally, there is no indication for how long we can take it. i’ve been taking it occasionally for over a year
@@MollyPelletierRD If a person feel that they are Healed from Acid Reflex, are there a Test ( ct scan , etcc ) that shows you are REALLY HEALED???? Thank you !!!! I have one more question, I have Low Stomach Acid, by any chance , do you know what I could take for that ??? Thanks .
I got so many vitamin deficiencies from years of PPI's , b12 especially & shocking anemia that I'm still fighting back from. These are the things drs don't tell you when giving you these drugs. I am desperate to get off them & go the organic & more natural route , hence me watching the video but PPI's can be hard to get off when you have more than one digestive issue that's out of control.
Thank you! Super helpful video! Do you think some dairy is okay? Like whey protein. I guess everyone’s body is different. I’ve started a good journal to see what triggers my GERD/acid reflux
Very useful video ❤️Thank you for the info. May I ask that I have LPR for a year and treated with PPI and it isn't improved. I am currently take sucralfate as well so I am wondering that slippery em works the same way as sucralfate. My doctor has no knowledge about herbs 🥺
You can cure your lpr with diet. Mix white soda with alkaline water drink it. ( You can search how to do it) and Change your diet i saw great difference.
Hi Molly, will this heal my esophagus bcoz I have acid reflux and I have no knowledge about it before so I didn’t know how to sleep on elevated position and my acid flare up and hurt my esophagus and now it’s hurting me. Can this help heal my esophagus lining from the damage of acid? Because I’m looking for natural remedy but effective. I read about this Licorice root and Slippery Elm Bark also Marshmallow root I heard all three are good. Will this capsule still coat my esophagus even though is a capsule form? Isn’t better if you take the powder one because is direct to your esophagus lining when drinking it?
I have esophagus issues too , I been taking them. but I like to know , how does a person know if they are Healed? I have read , not sure if it's true, apples are good for acid reflux. *You have to get Acid Reflux Healed" asap
Excellent stuff .... the lack of bile causes most acid problems as the job of bile is to neutralize acids ... before going in to the small intestines ... Hummm what blocks bile .... ??? funny you never mentioned that one ....
i like the digestive enzymes from Nuzest, and Jarrow formulas is a good brand for probiotics, but i dont take either personally so I cant recommend a specific one!
Hi Molly thanks for the informational video.. I saw "Slippery Elm" sometime ago but didn't know it's for the gastro stuff, I kindda have "peptic ulcer" because I just recovered from Covid. I saw your title, it's said "prevent" instead of "cure/recover"... Do I have to consume those for the rest of my life? Thanks before.
Just saw my G I doctor yesterday and just up my meds and added two more. I had meds and want the n.. Have been suffering from server Acid refl and learned about Marshmallow Root and accidently came across your video. Thank you very informative
Question, so do you think healing from the herbs is what stopped you from refluxing and cured your acid reflux? I'm all about finding my root cause right now this is driving me nuts! Waiting for my slippery elm to arrive!
i think the herbs helped me heal. but my root causes were 1) stress, 2) disordered eating leading to constipation, 3) food poisoning induced IBS - so i had to address those too with therapy and consistent, balanced meals, etc but the herbs helped me to stop having pain and heal the tissue that had been damaged by reflux
@@MollyPelletierRD What kind of therapy? Right now I'm trying to find a functional doctor just have to accept the pricing as its not covered by insurance but I feel as I need it...
Hello Molly, I've been considering to buy Slippery Elm & Licorice Root. I hope it'll help my gerd. Everytime I'm done eating (small amount) I get acid reflux/ heartburn (i already loss 3kgs in 7 days) & my anxiety is building up so my chest will get numb, it's such a terrifying feeling. Does taking those supplements lessen your symptoms? Or you fully got rid of it? I hope you can still read my comment. Thanks!
im so sorry to hear you are struggling! have you seen a GI doctor or Registered Dietitian? they helped me heal from chronic GERD - i have occasional very mild symptoms now if i eat my triggers
I'm.currently going through the worse time ever .iv had a chronic cough for over 2 years and lately it's become unbearable. I'm having violent coughing fits through out the day, to the point that I wet my self and feel iv forced a prolapse now aswell. My throat is constantly on fire these days .Iv had the investigative camera down my nose and with that acid reflux was confirmed, I then was prescribed omeprozal. Which has worsened my symptoms. So your video has been a help especially the advice on throat soothing supplements .My question is that are these supplements having a decreasing effect on my stomuch acids? as I know I have to increase my acids and NOT decrease. I'm so desperate to releave this cough . Iv started taking ACV tday and that has made a slight difference . Thank you in advance waiting your reply here in the uk
@@MollyPelletierRD have you ever had a face redness that triggers after a hot shower related to any of this? It goes away shortly after. Either the nexium meds or just a diet based reaction I’m thinking...thank you!
I just got them today and I can't wait to try them, I've been lowering my PPI intake to every other day for the last 4 weeks and only felt bad for the first 2 weeks, I think my body got used to the new dose and now I can handle better the acid. I will start using this alternative meds and see how it goes, I lost weight proabs due to the PPIs not allowing full absoption of food and I've only read bad thingss about long term PPI use. I've been on them for 5months now and I'm hopeful that these supplements will at least make my quality of life better until I can get the surgery.
@@kysoai405 I think it has helped I have been fearful of stopping using PPIs but I know I have to eventually. I have had small flares specially after having a bad posture or not waiting enough for laying after eating. But this herbs have definitely helped, I can eat most foods and even alcohol some times but I wouldn't advice drinking.
@@JohnQPublic345 Update: I've been off PPIs for almost 3 months now, I haven't had any rebound, flares are minimal and I can be weeks without them even after drinking alcohol or spicy food, which I obviously try to avoid. I eat whatever I want but trust me stopping eating late is what has done it for me, so probs after around 7 months in PPIs I'm free of them. I feel like life gave me another chance (at least until better surgery options are avaiIable) I take my herbs twice a day and they do help specially at bed time. The only symptom I still have is waking up with an acidic flavor but its like 10% of what I was having before the treatment. In my experience PPIs are necessary but there's no need of taking it long term for most people but doctors like scaring the shit out of us to makes us go for the surgery.
What would you do if you don't have time to take licorice root and slippery elm 1-2 hours before eating in the morning? I usually take Nexium and vitamins right before I eat breakfast but I don't have time to wait an hour. I am trying to get off PPI's.

@@MollyPelletierRD Thank you for your reply. I actually ordered my first batch of Licorice root and Slippery Elm, but there's no mention of ACV in this video. The reason I'm asking is because nearly every other video on acid reflux notes that ACV is a "go to" in order to reduce the need for PPI's (usually taking ACV with 8 oz of water 1-2 times daily or adding it to as a salad dressing, etc). Do you have any option specifically on using ACV on any regular basis in order to regulate stomach acid in-balances? I'm really curious because I haven't seen you mention ACV in any of the videos that I've previewed so far as least. Thanks again for starting your channel and providing so much helpful advice and options to consider.
Did you have any stomach problems while you were taking this like maybe indigestion burping but also hard to pass gas? Im sorry for asking these are just the only things im suffering from left from GERD. How long do you take this for as well?
hii i hope u answer! but im not vegan or plant based, i wanna ask u bc i have gerd too and wanted to ask can i just be on a normal meat or fish diet and take a plant based protein powder? like is tht ok or do i have to be on a plant based diet ?
I've been talking DGL licorice capsules, not sure if they make a difference for me. In addition to that I've been eating clean. No tomato sauce, ketchup, nothing spicy, no chocolate, sweets or fatty junk foods, no citrus fruits, no bottled juices or sodas. I've also started drinking alkaline water daily which seems to help settle my stomach. I might take an occasional antacid, but have cut myself off nexium after being on it about 20 years, with seemingly no adverse side effects. Also, avoiding food a couple hours before bed and sleeping with a bed on a slight incline help.
@@MollyPelletierRD Still have occasional reflux, but feel considerably better overall. I think cutting out soda, and cutting back on sweets and excess carbs along with drinking more water has done alot for my energy level and reflux. I've been slowly adding foods in to see what causes problems. Seems I may have an issue with peanutbutter. Still mostly staying away from citrus, acidic and spicy foods, along with fried food and processed junk food. I tried Cheddar Cheez Its the other day and noticed they even gave me some minor relux. Bananas and oatmeal are definitely easier on the stomach in the morning and are usually my breakfast go to. It's kind of a pain to always eat clean, but if it keeps me off meds it's worth it.
Hi MOLLY, in the video, you said that you were still taking PPI one and a half-hour after taking the Supps. I wonder if it's possible to get rid of PPI completely?
i have heard of the blood pressure impacts but according to my research if you use the DGL form it has been stripped of the compound in licorice that can raise impact blood pressure, but always do your own research! i’ve taken it for years just sharing what works for me :)
you said one of your trigger is wine. if you plan to drink wine at night, does taking 2 slippery elm and 1 licorice in the morning help to avoid reflux at night? what is your routine if you plan to take trigger food

@@MollyPelletierRD not yet, but that's a very good Idea, i am presently on Low FODMAP diet. So I just didn’t know if these products could exacerbate the mucus in his throat. Thank you for your videos they have been so helpful!

@@Superchef32 Hi! I would say that it has only helped a little bit. I wanted him to start out on half the dose just to make sure that no problems occurred. He was taking two pills of the licorice root and two pills of the slippery elm first thing in the morning. It did not bother him or create any additional mucus so he just started taking two more licorice root and two more slippery elm at night. We will see how that goes. I really believe however that the only thing that’s going to work is a complete change in diet, eliminating acidic foods and not eating late at night. Have you tried any sort of acid free diets? You are the Superchef😉 I started making some of the recipes from The Acid Watcher Cookbook.
