You didn't mention my favorite for studies: Fredrix canvas pad. Acrylic primed canvas, it has body and surface is very close to painting on oil primed. I get the 18"x24" size and cut a sheet into fourths for studies. Tape the canvas to a hard surface for painting, remove the tape, store flat.

I’ve never tried it, but I recognize the name and know it’s one of the better known brands out there!

Good one Patrick, and gorgeous paintings BTW. Yes, travel does present challenges for paint surfaces, as to weight etc. Good types you showed for the studio too for studies or finish paintings, with a hard surface to work on underneath the paper or canvas and linens, temporarily or permanently attached to it. I have used the Cansons oil papers in pads often for oil sketches of portraits, nothing to sell but as a practice for the eye. I'm primarily a landscape painter and one must always draw well for any genre, and figures and portraits simply demand that skill, obviously! Love your "figures" your showed here too, the "models" stood still very nicely, right?!! LOL. Cheers from AZ, with lots to paint here, as you know, having been to Sedona recently!! :D

Hey fella, can I ask how you transport wet paintings on paper? Thankyou!
@ilgnir

Did you ever try staining the arches paper with a thin wash of acrylic, like transparent oxyde red? I found that to reduce the absorbancy somewhat.
@patrickokra
@patrickokra Месяц назад
I have not- does the water make the paper buckle/dry unevenly?
@ilgnir
@ilgnir Месяц назад
@@patrickokra Yes, but I prepare the paper before and just press it between paper towels and heavy books on top. It’s perfectly flat after that.

How do protect the paint while it dries? For how long do you waist until you put a paint on top of another?

Is it okay to use a wash of color with gamsol solvent on Arches oil paper to tone it? Or would the gamsol damage the surface?
@patrickokra
@patrickokra 4 дня назад
I don’t know I have never tried, but I don’t think you would damage the surface. The main worries would be about not being able to get a consistent tone, or bucking the paper

How do you attach the paper to something hard when you are painting outside?? How do you decide whether to tone or not?

The nameless brand of Italian paper... why even mention it if we can't find it? The name of the paper, spoken so quickly is CLAWSON
@patrickokra
@patrickokra Месяц назад
Claessens is the name of the linen, the Italian paper was an example of a different texture, just to show there are a lot of options out there, and the main thing to consider on any surface is texture and absorbency

Bet they never told you while studying at your Atelier you would be spewed out into the World of Contemporary figure painting along with every other classical realist who wound up having to teach, and workshop, and Pateron and RU-vid and opening up Ateliers themselves to sell and make ends meet because there are ZERO galleries for classical realists. It's deader than dead. I'm sure they never told you that while drawing for hours from casts.

They kinda did warn us, at every step - no one ever said it was easy. And it ended up being harder than I thought it would be (I kinda ignored them) But I’m also glad I’m not a classical figurative painter, because I see my friends from school not changing with the times and leveraging social media and they really struggle. I’m a landscape painter, and I went into the academy to pursue landscape painting after meeting a working landscape painter. There are lots of landscape painters making a living off of their paintings in the US. It’s still not an easy job, but people buy landscape paintings, unlike standing nudes from a model room or a portrait of a stranger. As for social media and teaching online, I actually prefer the flexibility and stability it offers over having to grind out paintings in a set style and ship to and rely on galleries. But I still sell my paintings, and so far it’s been the largest chunk of income. Everything feeds into everything - it’s important to have a balanced ecosystem. Important conversation, thanks for the comment planetwarrior9980 🙏

@@patrickokra Good attitude! When I first went to college the orientation prof, in the Department, gave a little speech and said only 5% would get jobs in my profession, as a Wildlife Biologist, that due to crazy intense competition for only a few jobs nationwide. I got lucky and had a 33-year career in my chosen profession. And I also did art as a diversion from all the hard science courses I took in grad school, and still to this day!! So, I guess if you want something bad enough, and are willing to work a bit harder than most others in your cohort, you can make it happen. Skill and knowledge are required, of course, but a little luck helps too. Good luck to you!! : )
