Susan had been missing fresh fish since she moved to the mainland years ago. Mitch's had been on her list of the places she had wanted to try as she used to pass by the "hole-in-the-wall" place often on her way to work, but never stopped by.
She was not disappointed. The fish is the freshest we've had. And she was very glad to have tried it. Price/Portion it's a bit on the spendy side. But worth it as a celebratory splurge in a low-key setting.
The waitress was extremely knowledgeable of all the different types of fish.
We got some things in the omakase menu we had not had before (or at least not on the mainland).
I was impressed by the Bluefin Otoro. It came in a bowl and appeared to either be finely chopped, or scraped off the tuna bones and topped with chopped green onion and a pea-sized smear of fresh wasabi on the side. It made me think of Lomi Oio Poke.
The sweet shrimp was also a standout. Unlike Ebi which is a cooked shrimp, the sweet shrimp was served raw. Meticulously cleaned, it had a crisp texture similar to well-presented ika, but was definitely sweet! I emphasize how clean the shrimp was, because I've had poorly cleaned shrimp, both cooked and somewhat raw in ceviche where my throat closed up after eating. There was none of that here!
The rest was very simply presented, fresh sushi. No fancy flambe, excessive, squirts of colorful sauces, or gold leaf sprinkles.
We also ordered some roasted oysters that were delicious and briny. I think we only had Tabasco available to dress it up. Maybe some horseradish, or even Hawaiian "peppa water" would have been nice, but not really necessary.
Still a bit hungry, we ordered hand rolls to round out the meal. They were also very nice, wrapped with perfectly dry, crisp nori sheets.
Dessert-wise, this is not a dessert place! You come here for the fish. My wife's friend had joined us for dinner. She and I had the mochi which was okay. Not sure if it was house-made, or came from a supermarket freezer section. My wife went for the Miso Soup (Yes, offered as dessert). She very much enjoyed that! Not a typical miso. No seaweed, or tofu chunks. Just a very smooth broth garnished with a fat shrimp head which was packed with flavor!
Again, this would not be our go-to, daily sushi dinner, but perfect for a special occasion.
