Had a deposit on a Limited AWD GH. Ended up buying a “base” Lexus TX350 AWD. Why? Don’t care about the panoroof (more headroom without it as well); 4 yr/50k vs 3/36 bumper to bumper and 6 yr/70k vs 5 yr/60k powertrain; better sound deadening and ride; painted fender well trim and lower cladding vs black plastic; hood struts under hood vs prop rod on any GH; power tilt/telescopic steering wheel vs manual on any GH; Lexus dealership and service experience far superior; better resale value; and I could go on. Price diff between GH Limited AWD, and base Lexus TX350 AWD, after discounts and Conquest money, was only about $3000. And I have heated steering wheel to boot. No brainer. For me, at least. And I like having the 2nd row bench.

Same here. The best motivation to purchase the base TX 350 for me was the fact that a top trim GH was basically the same price. Plus, I don’t drive enough to the point where a hybrid is a must. And like he said in the video, the TX looks way better than the GH in person. The base 350 is not much more expensive than the top trim Telluride, Palisade, etc. I’ve had my TX about 2 months and I’ve been loving every moment of it. Super happy with my decision. Btw, this is by far one of the best car reviews I’ve seen of the TX and GH (or any car period). He actually talked about the minute details that consumers will really care about on a daily basis, such as the digital rear view, ambient lighting (even though he couldn’t show it), and detailed differences between the base and luxury TX, and how they both differ from the GH.

No big surprise the Lexus will be more luxe interior with a quieter ride. But I don't agree with your approach in the price comparison. The base model TX is missing a lot of tech and features of the top trim GH for the same price. Instead of building a GH model to match the TX specs, I tried building a GH with the TX's price tag of 57k as budget and got loads of features only on the higher end TX. I also tried building a TX to more closely match the GH Plat, and found a somewhat similarly equipped lower end TX is about $10k more than its GH gas Platinum equivalent. So the L badge costs at least 10 grand for the sound insulation and cool modular square cupholders, instead of the "lesser quality" Toyota 360 camera, panoramic sunroof, etc, and with 1 less seat, 2 if the GH is a bench 🤷🏻‍♀️ The question to ask is if someone shopping with 57k would prefer a very basic low end Lexus or a well equipped high end GH. Design wise there really isn’t enough difference between the two. Of course, absolutely a Luxury package TX is the way to go if budget is not a concern.

Matching price points does mean trading off some things between the Lexus and Toyota versions.

The Hybrid Max is great as it is but pair that with how soft the GH drives then you realize that is a waste of power. You'll notice you really have to slow down on your turns because of the body roll and the waves of the bumps that makes people in the 2nd and 3rd row sea sick especially on long drives. My top pick is TX 350H or a Honda Pilot, great driving dynamics compare to GH and also the Pilot still has the V6.

I agree with your comment on Acura. It is a performance brand. I just traded my 2022 MDX for the 2024 TX Luxury. Why? I am a mom with kids and I value space and comfort over performance. The 3rd row in MDX was unusable and the second row was crammed with carseats. Plus Lexus has better customer service.

We got the Lexus tx hybrid, where I live every Toyota dealership within a couple hours drive was marking up the grand highlander well into tx territory. Lexus negotiated down and we got the warranty extended out to 8 years for barely over $1k more. The gas may cost more but if we intend to keep it a very long time the first month and road trip it has been a massive improvement over our cx9 and expecting to keep it 8-10 years I would never consider paying over list for the Toyota instead. If I only intended to keep it a short term maybe i wouldn’t care so much about the cabin experience so much, but knowing Lexus resale value I’d still probably go Lexus. If Toyota actually sold at list prices in my part of the country maybe it would be different

I am about to be in the market for a new SUV. I currently have a Sept 2021 Highlander Platinum Hybrid with only 15,150 miles on it. I am also considering the Lexus TX, the Lincoln Nautilus Reserve 3 or the top of the line Black Label Nautilus, and the BMW X5, or the Grand highlander hybrid max. Last option would be to purchase my own vehicle. I have been driving Toyota's since 2010 and have had zero issues. I'd love to hear your take / opinion about the 2024 Nautilus. Thanks!

Unfair maybe but the models we would consider. And I believe the Hybrid TX, is a bit more money (Like a several $1,000 more?) and still not the MPG of the GHL Hybrid. We put on an average 30,000+ miles a year, so the pay-off time is pretty quick all and all:) Thank you for the great review and feedback

Lexus has limited choices for seat colors. Anything but black for me. I'd prefer the Grand Highlanders portobello color, but the Lexus has better acoustic insulation and more speakers over the 11 that you get from the Grand Highlander. Pay more for premium fuel? The Toyota uses regular. Save some $$

why would someone one 22" wheel over 20".. Hit any size pot hole, you would need to buy new tire and rims. I had to replace numerous tires and rims on Audi, M/B in the past. What is the cabin noise difference between Grand Highlander vs TS vs GX?
@MOHAWKAUTO
@MOHAWKAUTO 5 месяцев назад
I’m not a fan of larger wheels myself. The cabin noise seemed quieter on the TX than the Grand Highlander, but that’s somewhat subjective. Perhaps I’ll need to look into a decibel meter to know for sure.

Grand Highlander runs on 87 octane gasoline which will save you 600-800 dollars per year.
@MOHAWKAUTO
@MOHAWKAUTO 5 месяцев назад
Based on my calculations, that is too high. The combined mileage is estimated to be 23 miles per gallon on both the Grand Highlander and the TX. The average mileage driven a year in the US is estimated to be 13,500. 13500 miles/23 mpg= 586.96 gallons (I’ll round to 587). Where I live the price difference is about 0.30 per gallon so 587*0.30=176.10. According to the AAA the difference in the national averages is 0.79 so 587*0.79=463.73.

Correct, however, I normally drive a specific route to get a good idea on mileage and I was unable to do that in the TX. So I don’t want to compare numbers if the tests were conducted differently.

Not a big deal, but added to the other issues / reasons, the GHL runs on regular fuel vs Premium fuel for the TX. That means from Maine to San Diego, CA and back is $460.00 in GHL Limited Hybrid, vs TX at $701.00 or about $300.00 more? I will say I have an appointment at the local Lexus dealer to see what they will give me for the trade-in 2020 Highlander, maybe it's enough to think harder about the Lexus. For me, another small issue is the fact that the closest dealer is about 35 miles away. And service (oil change is about $100.00 more) is generally more money, so all things to take into consideration … for me.
@MOHAWKAUTO
@MOHAWKAUTO 5 месяцев назад
Good points, but I’m not sure about the math. Premium fuel isn’t normally almost double the cost of regular fuel and after comparing the Grand Highlander to the TX on their respective websites, the fuel economy is only 1 mpg less in town and highway, although combined is the same. I ran the numbers through Excel and here’s what I came up with. Using Portland Maine as the start, and San Diego as the finish, Google maps said it was a distance of 3098 one way so doubled is 6196. I used highway mileage for each vehicle to determine the GH (27 hwy) would use 229.48 gallons of fuel and the TX (26 hwy) would use 238.31 gallons of fuel. I used the price of regular and premium where I am (I know this would vary from state to state and depending on where you got gas). Regular near me can be had for 2.83 and premium is 3.15. So the GH is $649.43 and the TX is $750.67. I recognize there are more factors that could make those number differentiate greatly, but this gives a ballpark. As for maintenance, I would think Toyota could service the car for routine maintenance (assuming it’s closer for you).
@yahooskip
@yahooskip 5 месяцев назад
Yeah I used gas buddy and the hybrid vs the gas vs regular gas verses premium that’s what they came up with
@yahooskip
@yahooskip 5 месяцев назад
Yeah I compared the Base Hybrid GHL (as that is the one we have coming), to the Gas model TX, GasBuddy was were I did the comparison and the round trip was $460.00 for the Hybrid GHL and $701 for the TX? If I'm comparing the 2 that I would purchase, I have to use the Hybrid vs the Gas model as that is what I be getting. Yeah the Toyota dealer is 2 miles down the road, so IF they would service it, that would be great and a non-issue.
@MOHAWKAUTO
@MOHAWKAUTO 5 месяцев назад
@@yahooskip I’d be surprised if they wouldn’t service it honestly, that could be a flag as well, but maybe I don’t understand why they couldn’t. Also, the TX comes in a hybrid as well. Although I can understand why you choose to compare the models you did, the fuel comparison becomes unfair. Typically the increased upfront cost of the hybrid platform over its standard engine option is offset by the savings in fuel in the long run.

I can get over vehicle color options if the car meets more of my needs/wants compared to what I’d get for my desired color. Lexus doesn’t offer a red currently for its hybrid TX, but it offers a lot of standard features including an F Sport tuned suspension. It’s a lot more, but you’re getting a lot as well. The GH isn’t ugly but it’s super generic; on two separate occasions I’ve mistaken it for a RAV4 and had to look twice to realize it was a GH. The TX on the other hand is striking and distinguished in person, especially in darker colors. After seeing it in person, I changed my mind and decided to get one.
