Even if you aren't into firearms it's a great idea to be into emergency medicine. If you can administer life saving care such as being able to stop bleeding in the first hour you significantly boost the chances of someone surviving whatever trauma they have been subjected to.

In America, you can be a very long distance from a hospital or a doctor. So having a good first aid kit in your car is a very good idea. And while hunting a smaller useful kit could save your life.

Its good you are learning. Having several friends in the medical field tho... he is liberally deploying a tourniquet ...not good... it is an EXTREME last ditch tool... folks have needlessly lost limbs & yes, died from a wound that did NOT require one. Train, talk with med folks about this & yes... DO apply if it warrants such... ONLY then !
@guisspino
@guisspino 4 года назад
Seminole Rick that’s very outdated teaching. Yes, tourniquets are the trend of the month and it is a bit over stated. But there is pretty low risk of applying a tourniquet and keeping it on a limb. Well up to 12 hours or so you can have zero long term damage.

Garand Thumb makes an excellent case for two IFAKs, one for holes and life-threatening trauma, and a boo-boo kit for everyday cuts, scrapes and aliments while in the field. What most of us would consider a "first aid kit'. He makes a good case for having both in the car, truck, SUV...and on the trail.

I have the old AR500 IFAK with the CAT-T. I've been wanting a new one to put on my rifle bag, so I bought this and got the SOF-T, because I don't have one. Training, practice, etc is crucial. I keep a couple RE Factor RATS tourniquets around too (I keep a MyMedic kid with me at work, which I unfortunately use too often just for bandaids, tylenol, benadryl, etc). But WITHOUT your code (caught this video after I ordered), the new QD IFAK is $106 shipped with the upgraded TQ. Good price to save a life if you need it.

As usual, you're in depth detailed look really goes a long way in showcasing the product you are looking at. Have you considered doing a video on when/how to use all the items in a first aid kit? We all need a refresher now and then, and having a video from you on the subject would be really handy. Might be a bit too far in left field, but something I thought of. Maybe tie it into a walk through of your emergency gear. How's your girl doing?

I try to stay in my lane when I make videos, and making instructional videos on how to use the various products would be well out of my lane even though I know how to use them. I might make one comparing tourniquets, though. My daughter is doing much better, thanks!

Just a quick note on the SWAT-T tourniquet unlike CAT or others it can be used on small children who arms are smaller than the flat windage part of the tourniquet. Since I take my kids to the range I keep both with me. Another advantage of the SWAT-T is in a mass casualty you can cut it and get a couple or more tourniquets out of one. Great Video thanks.

The only thing it's really missing is a face shield for CPR
@Crazt
@Crazt 6 лет назад
This Kunt Red Cross doesn't teach rescue breaths any more. If you were taught this recently might want to find an instructor with up to date credentials.
@e2-n412
@e2-n412 6 лет назад
Let's be honest here. Just because it isn't taught to the broad mass doesn't mean that it's not important. If your body doesn't get oxygen through the respiratory system then the myocardial cells die off after 3mins and the nerval cells in the brain after 5. What do you think why we use a BVM and an ET Tube in EMS? Just for fun? It's been proven by studies that if the first responder is performing CPR with a mouth to mouth and an AED, the ROSC rate doubled or even tripled. So use it if you know how to. Greetings from a German Paramedic
@KimberlyGreen
@KimberlyGreen 5 лет назад
@Crazy ... The Red Cross might not teach it, but other organizations, such as the National Safety Council (www.nsc.org/) do. I just completed my re-cert thru them for First Aid & CPR and we did perform chest compressions •and• breathing.
@TonySmithJr
@TonySmithJr 5 лет назад
Germany might be a little behind, if you see someone drop don't need rescue breaths. Stopping compression's causes more harm than continues compression's. The blood stream holds adequate oxygen to keep the brain and heart tissue alive until you can bag the patient. Now if EMS is a long time away then you can consider rescue breaths after 15 minutes of compression's. Feel free to read the new research on how stopping compression's for even 10 seconds starts you all over on the patient. Greetings from an American emergency department nurse

@Pugrug. 2 года назад
you can fold chest seals, it doesn’t really affect the performance if you know how to apply them, there are also many ways to fold cat tourniquets and there are also many cat tourniquet holders that can be used on the molle of this kit.

I liked it for practical and portability. I’m more worried about expired dates for longevity i.e. longevity of components. How long and how often to resup? Everything has a use by, can you do a 1st aid kit with what does and doesn’t need resup?
@TWANGnBANG
@TWANGnBANG 6 лет назад
I wouldn’t hesitate to put an “expired” item into use saving a life. Most of the time, the expiration date is there because the FDA requires it and there isn’t a lot of incentive to make the expiration date long for two reasons: 1. It would take more time to test the expiration date as required by the FDA, 2. Most of this is used by hospitals and professional first responders who simply go through their supplies so fast that expiration dates just aren’t a concern.

Piece of advice for the CAT. There's no need to fumble with feeding the strap through the loop while you're applying the tourniquet as you should already pre-size it for a (normal) human thigh. Leg wound, just slide it up the leg and cinch it tight. Arm, do the same thing but pull more. This is also important for self-application. Personally, since we're talking about tourniquets and stopping blood loss is paramount, just get yourself some simple one-inch ratchet straps and size them for use (that is, don't have 10 feet of nylon when three or four will do).
@TWANGnBANG
@TWANGnBANG 6 лет назад
The reference was not for cases where you *can* slip an already-looped TQ over a limb. It is not uncommon in an MVA, for example, to find a limb so mangled as to not have one direction below the injury or even a limb pinned somewhere in the wreckage.

If you are to use an IFAK it the way they were intended like the military does the IFAK you are carrying is used on you and so your buddies keep theirs ready so if they get shot ect, but that's combat not EDC which you can use an IFAK to help someone else. With turnqutes record the the application time that's why some have a white patch on them.

1. Big salute for these wise words right at the beginning. 2. What does AR stand for in all these items? I mean the rifle, ok. Assault Rifle. Or Automatic rifle? But AR steel, AR armor, AR medipacks etc. What does AR in these cases mean? :)
@TWANGnBANG
@TWANGnBANG 6 лет назад
The "AR" in "AR500" stands for "abrasion resistant." "AR500" is an abrasion resistant steel hardened to around 500 BHN (Brinell test for hardness). "AR500 Armor" is a company that made a name for itself quite literally introducing low cost body armor plates made of AR500 steel. They kept the name even as they expanded to plate carriers, non-steel armor, medical kits, and more.

I enjoyed it. Was dissapointed with the hemostatic agent however, as the website showed Celox granules but I ended up getting a Quikclot Advanced Clotting Sponge instead. Needless to say I swapped that out for the granules. I also added a nasopharyngeal airway and a Celox Z-fold, as well as some small gauze pads and some Advil (I also have Tylenol in my carrier for those who are allergic to ibuprofen). I very much enjoy the setup now that I tweaked it, and I'll probably make a video soon enough

I don’t know anyone suggesting granules anymore. It tends to wash away from a strong bleeder instead of staying in place. Gauze and sponges ensure the granules stay where they need to be to get the job done while serving as a source of pressure on the open vessel.

He pointed out that the tampon is a lot more absorbent per volume than the gauze. Also the applicator makes it easy to stick the plug into a wound . That for me is the primary value in a medical kit. they are also useful for me because I often bring women in outdoor activities , and never three times they've raided my first aid kit....

But you're not getting gauze into a hole. Tampons go into a bullet hole, and expand to keep pressure on the edges of the hole. All the *combat* medics I know carry & recommend tampons. Nothing against Skinny, he has good advice, but in this case, his judgement is affected by his civilian rather military experience. He can go lights and sirens, and have a GSW patient in a hospital in say, 20 minutes. In the woods or field where a hospital is father away, the combat medics I know swear by tampons. (Of course, that's not to say they are the only thing they carry or use, just that they have a strong place in an IFAK.)

How many combat medics do you know? How many gunshot wounds have you seen up close? More importantly how many GSWs have you personally treated either from point of injury or through to the operating room? "...expand to keep pressure on the edges of the hole" Please stop spreading misinformation. Tampons are not a solution to gunshot wounds. It is not the edge of a gunshot wound that is of any immediate concern. The underlying trauma and insult to vasculature and organs and proceeding exsanguination are the main threat to life. Again, please stop spreading this sort of poorly backed information. If tampons were indeed a better solution than kerlix the Department of Defense would have replaced the very expensive pressurized gauze with a $0.20 tampon.

This thing looks flimsy. Should have used a lot more velcro on the points where it's supposed to "hold" when you pull it to trifold.

Just be careful of local and state laws before you start cutting away cloths. A friend of mine who works with me as a medic was in Kentucky many years ago. A lady had collapsed and didn’t have a pulse so he cut a tore the ladies top off along with bra and started CPR. Later he was cited for exposing the lady. Nothing came of it as the lady refused charging my friend. But he was a little worried for awhile. The laws may have changed over the years.

Never heard of something so silly. I highly doubt that would stand up to a judge’s scrutiny let alone a jury.

Good Samaritan laws have virtually removed all civil liability except in the instance of performing CPR while not being certified and causing injuries.
