James Romero is widely considered to be one of the best tournament poker players in the world and today he takes you through the wonderful world of 3-betting!
He talks about how the size of your 3-bets should vary depending on the effective stack depth and the post flop stack to pot ratio (SPR).
He also discusses how the frequency in which you should 3-bet drastically increases when you are facing later position opens. This is because the range of hands is much wider when players open from late position.
The in position player gets to print lots of EV from calling 3-bets rather than 4-betting which is why you see a very high percentage of calls when looking at the GTO sims.
This class is one of many that we have over on PokerCoaching.com for our Premium Members!

Do you think you 3-bet too much or too little? 🧐

I have noticed a mentality amongst rec players who don’t 3 bet enough that their reason is that “whenever I 3 bet, a junky looking flop always comes that misses the 3 bettors range and I will likely have to check/call or check/fold depending on what my opponent’s range looks like and how it could connect with said flop, and more often than not just end up waiving the white flag and folding to another barrel on the turn/river if I check call the flop” so for them they believe 3 betting at an optimal frequency is a negative EV play. Bad mentality and logic. There are plenty of ways to still steal pots after bricking the flop and check/calling to see a turn. You have to know what your opponent’s range will look like and know what good turn/river cards are to bluff with and how to rep hands with proper bluff sizes, etc. Basically you need to know how to play later streets well. Secondly, 3 betting at an optimal frequency will reduce the odds of the occasional junky hand staying in that would have coolered your semi-strong second best hand. Lastly, it will set you up to maximize your wins with big pots when you do hit the flop. If you haven’t been overly bluffy when bricking the flop on later streets after check/calling the flop as the preflop 3 bettor, when you finally do pick a good spot and bet big, your opponent will likely have to give you credit and let you buy it. But by properly check/calling at the right frequency with the right type of backdoor draws/overcard draw type hands when you brick the flop as the preflop 3 bettor, you can then pick optimal spots to balance your OOP check/IP check back range when you flop a really big hand and take a bluffy line on the turn/river and potentially trap your opponent and extract max value with it.

Thank you for this video today. It helped me recalibrate my inner poker player. I had lost part of the skill to help me cash in many tournaments. I couldn't figure out what I had changed. Then today, I dominated two tournaments recalibrated; adding this information back into my game was the key 🔑

One thing that always trips me up is when UTG/+1 open and there are a couple callers before it gets to me in LP. Do you still just 3bet with A5s, K8s, etc? With all the callers, that's going to be a huge 3bet and you know at least 2 players are going to call.

Why would two players call a pot sized 3-bet from out of position? If they are, just 3-bet linearly and crush them.

3bet enough to accomplished the job which is a: isolate to thin out the field b: not to much to cost you more than necessary c: not to little where they’re forced to called with 100% of their range which would be tough to read their calling range

Thank you putting this video up and I have a few questions: - Just to confirm that where you mention for example 3-betting from SB with 100 BB vs UTG, the effective VPIP is 17% which consists of 6% is my 3-bet range and the remaining 11% is my calling range. Is that correct? - Again focusing on 3-Betting from SB, for example if you have 30 BB left and you 3-bet vs UTG with your top 6% of hands and UTG 4-bet you, are you ever folding or do you commit all your chips?

Great video. Doesn't the call/3b frequency also depend on the size of the pfr ?

Surprising numbers given here. I know I need to 3B my weaker hands more, at least the ones that aren't strong enough to call. I know James is a tourney PRO so I wonder how far off this is from cash games. Really interesting info. Thanks!

Why? And how to proceed postF? otherwise great advice!
@Zoggyboyzimmy
@Zoggyboyzimmy Год назад
@@terencehill3972 it’s about playing our range most effectively, if we can’t flat A5s or KQo Middle position vs early position, we have a choice to bluff with any of the hands we would have otherwise fold, we should always use the best hand that we would fold so we have the highest equity when called, it’s never going to use KTo to 3bet because we wouldn’t flat KJo
@terencehill3972
@terencehill3972 Год назад
@@Zoggyboyzimmy I wonder whether or how this play by itself is +EV. IF you 3-Bet A5s or KQo vs. EP and get called, you often will be dominated or behind (e.g. AQ, JJ, TT). Weighing those losses plus potential multi-street failed bluffs with the small wins when villain folds to your 3-Bet/C-Bet... I understand that from a range/deception point of view you can do it, but then the question is whether the game you play actually requires balancing or offers any FE at all.

From my experience in the field that i play with the opening raiser calls the three bet 99 percent of the time once they have opened raise wether they had AK or 72 they just dont fold they see a flop no matter what. Does this mean i should only 3 bet with value? Or wider.
@jeffryglenn7024

Wow... 3-betting UTG+1 as a BLUFF nearly 50% of hands you decide to play!? Not something I've been doing, but can see the logic. Flatting is horrible, so it's vital to 3-bet your premium hands, so it's vital to disguise your premium hands.

What position is HJ+1 supposed to be? Is that the LJ/MP? I mean, I can't face a 3B from HJ, if I openraise from CO? 😅

Yeah I’ve never heard a single other player ever say “hijack plus one.” The fact that he typed it out multiple times and said it out loud seems weird and makes him seem less credible as a coach.

Im not sure what to make of this so far. The pokercoaching charts say BB should 3bet 3% and call 14% vs UTG. The strategy you’re saying is basically double both of those. For the record I’m not saying your wrong but why are these strategies so different? Is the pokercoaching chart for beginners and this strategy isn’t something you should do unless you really know what you’re doing? Or is this tournament sizing not cashgame or something? this just is so much looser than I expected.
@MrJoosebawkz
@MrJoosebawkz Год назад
like bb vs btn raise pokercoaching says 40% vpip. You’re saying like… 75%. It’d be really nice to know where this discrepancy comes from at a fundamental level so I know whether to stick w their “official” pf strategy or work with this one, or meet somewhere in the middle
