I think the most important part about what we wanna fold / call / raise is to look at what villain is supposed to bet for the size (and what he actually bets in practise). I would have liked to see more about villains range.

Amazing content! Thank you Jonathan & Matt! Just a small coment: 1 - Bet/(Pot+Bet) is actually Pot / Pot + Bet, for a quicker mental computation, if one needs to do the computation mentally. I personally memorised the bluff ratios and know how to negate that.

Given the bet size I can Tell the opponents range pretty well, only when they are decent players that It gets harder, but overall players that are scared Will fold on that spot to a re-raise on the flop/turn a Lot of times. You have to do different things depending on the player you're facing, but overall these players fold a Lot on the turn, which is so telling that sometimes I call with a weak hand that didnt even connected with the flop because I know who Im playing against, If I call the flop and the turn still low connected cards on the board My big bet get him to fold and I Win with nothing because they often play "fit or fold"

I feel like this call down strategy is good vs players who have a high tendency to bluff. However I find most people are more straight forward. They tend to only bet their premium/marginal holdings and to a lesser extent some strong draws. Since the bet we’re facing is almost always pot size or less we would be calling down most every time time with 50% or more of our range (in many cases like mentioned with over cards and backdoor flush draws) My initial thought is we are bleeding away our chip count on low equity holdings? Seems at first glance to only make sense to use this strategy to bet out with. Calling seems like giving away your chips.

This MDF strategy works best in equilibrium, you still have to adjust to your opponents and their tendencies. Against strong players you need to defend way more, but against weaker straight forward players you get to overfold more. And against maniacs you definitly need to overcall MDF. So adjust, adjust, adjust. I've also noticed that if the strong player has me marked as a straight forward, nitty caller, he will be betting early streets but shutting down more often when you call since they expect you to have it more often. So they need to see you calling down looser before they mark you as a looser player, which also results in you getting to defend more when they are not shutting down on turns and rivers. Hope this made sence.

Very interesting. However I find the idea of applying mdf to the flop problematic. Remember the definition of MDF as stated in Mathematics of Poker (not verbatim): "the % of the time you must call with a hand THAT BEATS A BLUFF in order to make opponent indifferent between betting or checking". MDF applies only to situations where atackers bluffs have 0 equity. That's almost never true on the flop and thats probably why piosolver is telling you to "overfold" in some spots: your opponent "bluffs" have some decent amount of equity. Also the part "hands that beat a Bluff" is important. If our opponent doesn't Bluff enough se should just not call him with mdf.

On wsop i either completely think to fold right away. But i also should just call so they dont reraise over a my raise and im now out of position. Itend to call and think about it like this. If i hit my ace im raising the shit out of the guy if i hit my jack im just calling him off if i dont hit either then i have to play the man, and figure out whether hes bluffing or more than likely has a set or straight on that board texture. Given the flop raise is a standard continuation bet i feel like he's repping a pair at the very most unless he's really tight/exploitative aggressive like me and has top pair and just wants to take the pot down. This is a standard call one street yet fold the turn to any bet or fold.

Im missing something: One the BDFD slide for a two-tone board he says he has 6 offsuit hearts in his range. Shouldn't that be 9 (13 hearts in the deck - 2 on the board -2 HH = 9)?? Is he excluding some heart cards in his range like the 2H?

@10:00 This probably simple, but I don't understand the link between the bet size and you NEED to call this percentage of the time. What is at the root of this calculation? I somewhat understand calculating pot odds and equity and making decisions that way, but this seems different and disconnected to me.

The villain bets 0.6 pot. He's risking 0.6 to win 1. Let's assume if you call he loses. 1 - 0.6/(1+0.6)= 62.5% is your minimum defence frequency. [ 1-(risk/risk+reward) ] Now imagine you're not meeting your MDF If he knows you're only defending with 40% of your range then 60% of the time he wins the pot. 60% * 1 = +0.6 40%*-0.6 = -0.24 So overall the bet is profitable by 0.36 irrespective off what he cards has. Now let's say you meet the MDF You're defending with 62.5% of your range and the other 37.5 he picks up the pot 37.5%*+1= +0.375 62.5% * -0.6 = -0.375 When we meet the MDF he doesn't get the opportunity to easily run profitable bluffs against you. Now, this is a gross oversimplification ignoring what else might be going on in the hand like ranges and how they hit the board, your opponents tendencies, etc. but I hope it got the general concept across.

Only if you opponents bet .Lets make an extreme example to better illustrate the point . Lets say the pot on the flop is always 5BB , your opponent always bets the pot and you can only call or fold all action ends there. If you fold 55% of the time you opponent will make 2.75 every time he bets on fold equity (5*0.55) and he only has to make 2.50 to break even . So after you play 1000 hands this way you are down 250BB ( my poker math is basically infantile but i think he makes that if you win every time you call and if he wins 10% of the time he starts to make .925 BB every hand making you down 925 BB after 1000 hands against a simple strategy that you would break even against if you just 100% called ) So i hope that shows how the MDF is a good way to make sure you don't lose to one dimensional aggression and how if you can see an opponent fold clearly more then they should even just to one bet sizing you can use that to bleed them out with profitable bluffs though get out the way when a passive plays back he'll generally have some nuts and unless you have something good enough you can lose all the BB you made from his over-folds ( something like betting 2x pot every time because you see them fold 90% might be a bit ambitious but if you really think more them 80 % of their range missed a rainbow board and a jam is 2x pot then maybe you can jam lead OOP with a bluff but care what percent pocket pairs make) Now I ask you , should you apply this 5-25nl? I play MTTs so i don't know and I'm a fellow student so I might be wrong but i do think i grasp the concept and hopefully reading this was as beneficial to you as typing was to me :) GLHF in all you of your games, poker and life .

@@TheWildbill247 Though my earlier reply is a poorly written jumble, that was calling 45% of the time so we have (5*0.55)-(5*0.45) , So i think you are right but we are down 500bb in that wildly unrealistic game .

Can't the opponent just absolutely crush you by never bluffing those dry boards and only bet for value? I've found it easy to exploit players by value betting very marginal holdings on those boards knowing that they will be calling with mostly over cards.
