Lanshan 2 Pro Trekking Pole Tent full and detailed tent review filmed in 5 different locations. This really is a fantastic Budget Ultralight Tent that can hold its own against tents costing 3 times as much. Camping Trip Updates
Trip planned Sunday 16th October update coming soon.....Trip made on Monday 17th October. Low level camp but with quite windy conditions. Wind speed at the tent 20mph with 30mph gusts and some light rain. Wind direction was changeable and hitting tent vestibule on and from the side. This caused a moderate amount of tent deformation but nothing to disturb my sleep. Wind noise was also not an issue. There was absolutely zero condensation despite having the tent inner zipped up fully and the fly at the windward side dropped very low. I did have a little movement of the trekking pole handle in its supporting reinforcement area at the top of the tent as the side ways wind was pulling the fabric down. I resolved this by placing a small trekking cloth between the top of the pole and the tent fabric. This actually stopped the slippage and was secure for many hours... More updates coming soon.

Hi Guys, I have added some further camping trip comments in the description of this video as a running update of the tents performance. In fact I will paste them here too for your attention... Tom, thanks for all your excellent tent reviews - which are the best I have found online. I bought the 3F UL Gear LANSHAN 1 Pro Tent (because it was supposed to have better wind resistance than the LANSHAN 2 Pro). Nevertheless, the tent's fabric ripped during the first use as a consequence of strong winds and sharp rocks in the ground (conditions that are frequent in the mountains). Also, I found that pitching the tent was difficult, especially in rocky soil and when I was looking for a site protected from the wind. After that experience, I bought myself a Hilleberg Soulo. I prefer to carry more weight and to pay more, but not worry again if my tent will survive the night. It is worth mentioning that I live in Santiago, Chile, and my intention is to use the tent mainly on beginner/intermediate hikes in the Andes mountains, sometimes alone. Also, considering that the weather forecast is always subject to change unpredictably.

I just bought mine and am waiting to arrive. I hike mainly on mountains southeast of Brazil and now it makes me worried haha. Anyways. I think it'll work for the trails I'm used to. Have you been to Torres del Paine? I'm buying this tent looking ahead for my trip to Patagonia next year. Your sincere thoughts are appreciated

@@adonisbastos2301 hi! What a coincidence… today I finished the “O Circuit” in Torres Del Paine! It was an incredible experience, highly recommended. I have to say that I can’t recommend the LANSHAN 1 PRO for Torres Del Paine. There, the weather changes very quickly, and strong winds are normal. For example, the day I arrived at the park, we had winds of up to 100 km/hr. Usually, people use cheap heavy tents, or expensive lightweight tents (such as MSR tents). I never saw tents with a design similar to the LANSHAN 1 PRO tent. I met a guy that had a Big Agnes tent, and it broke during the night. It is worth mentioning that you can rent tents in each camping site.

A little bonus for freestanding tents that doesn’t get mentioned as often: I don’t have a garden so I’d like to set up my tent to dry out and do modifications etc inside my home. Obviously easier with a freestanding tent rather than hammering some pegs through my floor 😉

Hey Jen, you are so right.. I am personally not a fan of freestanding tents but this is a big bonus.. Pitching in a spare room to dry is a big bonus as is pitching in my garden which is astro turf.. Lovely film , Tom. The detail was really very interesting. I’ve heard a lot about these tents, but never really seen an in-depth review. For the money and weight it seems like a very good option. Great review! Very thorough. I have the 3-season, 1 Pro and I love it. They really are good tents. I take a few minutes in the morning to wipe down the walls before getting out of my quilt and by the time I start changing back into my hiking clothes, the condensation is no worry.

It’s a lovely shelter, Tom. Simple, lightweight and effective. I do like that muted colour as well. When walking with poles, it’s the sort of thing you could pop in a small rucksack and barely notice it’s there. Excellent review 👍

Hi Sebastian, we are both late to the party regarding these tents.. I would have considered the double skin Lanshan due to the condensation factor but now after using this pro model I would definitely choose this one. But like anything you could go out for 5 nights and get no condensation issues or you could go out for another 5 and have it every time. But it really is easy to manage. The trelkking cloth I use to wipe it down is only 120g so no extra weight and I am personally happy to do this if I need to. Having a spacious two person tent in your pack weighing so little is great. My last camp I carried 6.5kg and that was including food, 700g Mat and a 1000g sleeping bag and obviously other kit too but it was a great comfortable night. Mr. Heaney, who has always retired into the most lavish and sturdy four poster beds, has now decided that a bedsheet over a washing line will do just fine. Nicely done Tom! My God - you’ve been converted 😮 I can see you love it and the value is undeniable…however…I just can’t shift the memory of the allergic reaction I had when I spent my first night in a 1 person Lanshan Pro 🫣 The 2 person makes a lot more sense for the minimal addition of weight and when pitched with care its obviously very strong. Maybe a few more years therapy might help me deal with my deep rooted condensation and high wind fears from the 1 person pro tent! I wasn’t blessed with those genes that seem to have been given to you for wiping windows of condensation by the way 😅 I use trekking poles and I can see how much sense it makes but for now - the 20 denier fabric with a two skin would probably me more what I’d entertain (after a lot more therapy). Great to see you getting the opportunity to test and review other tent brands!! 👍 Hopefully more will come your way 🤞

Great review again Tom. I bought one of these with a view to doing some of the Pennine Way back in March. I only spent a few days on the pennines due to injury but I found it a great tent and I was very impressed overall especially for long distance trails due to the overall weight. I went for the 3 season version with the thought that I would be getting the Staika for winter stuff which I did. I don't regret getting the 3 season but I did find it a bit drafty in March and was quite cold at night. But for summer use it would be ideal. I was very impressed with the length and was fine for me at 6ft 4". There was some condensation but as you say easily resolved with a wipe down. I would definitely recommend it. The seam sealing didn't take that long, perhaps a couple of hours and I was quite liberal with the sealant and it looks fine with no leaks so far. I will look forward to using it again in the future.

Hi Tom. Great to hear your thoughts on this tent which I know from other reviews is very highly regarded for its overall package of weight, function and price. Condensation on the inner skin is all but a given with this tent in certain conditions so if management of it is a concern then it’s to be avoided. As you say wiping it down just has to be a part of the camping routine. I definitely appreciate the benefits of trekking pole tents and have been tempted but am yet to be fully convinced due to the regularity of the strong winds we experience in the mountains, meaning I’m not sure how many times a year I’d end up using it! I do have my name on the notification list for one of those durston x-mids tho so you have a few months to convince me to part with my money lol….

I always carry a cloth to take care of water on my Hilleberg anyway, and trekking poles too. For me, maybe this is a good light weight, warm summer season alternative. 🤔

Great review I really like my Lanshan 2 Pro I also added my own front and back guy lines using long nail pegs Totally adds to the storm worthiness of the tent and takes the pressure off the original front and back guys which were the weak point of the tent and a place of failure Very sturdy now Yes I just wipe down any condensation Once in the middle of the night when I need to wake up then first in the morning Often quite dry by the time I back up having the doors open Highly recommended

Great review Tom and great account of how you came to use it first time. I’ve only used mine 3 times but have never had a bad experience and like you say the condensation can be easily managed. I had wondered if it was a mistake not to get the original version that has separate inner as lots of reviews slate the single skin pro 2, but I really like my pro 2 and it is so easy to do a good pitch I’m glad I chose it. Hi pal, I havent tried pro yet but I enjoyed this video. Very nice review. I have Lanshan Plus 1 in Khaki 4 season mesh for my solo trips and used it last week for 3 days in -1 at nights here in Scotland, North Berwick. Love that they are trekking pole tents since for me poles are a must on my 20-30 km+ walking days, condensation yes it is a small issue but only when I sleep on the grass and by the river or by the beach so obviously its very humid there but as you said wiping with cloth and later mid day when I rest somewhere we can just take the tent out to dry in the sun if possible. But from now on I sleep in the woods if I can or by the trees if usually much better less windy and not so much water on the walls. I find mine to be very good in high winds as I tested in doing Berwick Coastal Trail 70km+ and was over 40mph gust winds, no problem there, but its a pyramid style and I put it very close to the ground 125cm pole set up. I guess lanshans 2 are a bit harder to set up and maybe a bit more wobbly. I wished my Lanshan 1 Plus was made with Silnylon stronger material like Pro one but nevermind and a bit wider like yours 2 but its just me being picky :) Anyway have fun with yours and safe trips!

The 2 can definitely be tricky to set up when its windy but as long ar its correctly orientated into the wind and the direction doesn't change then it manages very well. Fab room in it too.... I don't own this tent, but I do have a non-pro 2021 Lanshan 1. For the cash, it's amazing value with amazing floorspace (sleeping in it at 6'2" is fine for me and I have plenty of space. Sitting up is a bit constrained. I can pack up inside if it's raining, but that's it). I love it when I'm out on my own, it's tiny pack size and ease of pitch; not really got a bad word to say about it. Also, thank god! Someone who understands that a double wall tent has no intrinsic condensation *prevention* ability over a single wall tent. They just allow for things like: you are kept away from the outer by the inner, and allow other design choices to be made to help with condensation. It's not like double glazing! Randomly, I looked at the Lanshan 2 for 2-up backpacking with the wife but decided the Hilleberg Anaris would have a fair bit more room for 3-4 days on the trot (because of the way the inner bathtub comes up about a foot at the head & foot ends). And yeah, it's great. It's massive, has massive vestibules, has great room inside, is light, is strong. Initially I thought the various pitching options were a gimmick, but we have used them. Is it 3 or 4 times better than the Lanshan 2? Well. Hmmmm. Honestly? Nah. But (imo) it is better. Can't quantify by how much, though.

Not too many will have used both.... Thank you for the support re the condensation thing as sometimes these points are hard to get across. To be honest I was sceptical myself with the single skin thing but now I have a practical solution then it will be full steam ahead for this type of tent to add to my collection. Great review! I have this tent and IMO it would be more secure in wind and not as difficult to pitch with poles which have slippery hard plastic handle tops if there was a captive pocket for the pole to prevent it sliding along the ridgeline.

@@TOMHEANEY100 I've stopped using my nice light Fizan compact poles when I take the Lanshan, finding that the tent is solid when I use my older poles with rubber handles with a pronounced lip which stays secure in the webbing loop. Also have found having the V guyline with slider ring spreading the load on the pole peak-vent hood of each end is much stronger. IMO the door point attachments need to be ridgid non stretch, so I have cordage with three knots providing height adjustment rather than using bungie. When it's windy, door to the wind with an extra pole along the inside of the door zipper to split the wind pressure there works well (if two people).

Can't loose the Fizan Compacts just yet though there has to be another way...🤣🤣. Hi Brody, thank you for watching the video. I have no experience of the One Tigris but on having a quick look I am not sure it comes with a solid inner so the mesh will be drafty in windy conditions... I do also like the fabric specification here on the Lanshan as well where the main fabric is coated on both sides with silicone which makes it very strong.. One tigris dont really say much about the fabric other than its 20d nylon... Hope that helps and best wishes Tom

Another great review.i get why people like this tent the weight saving and pack size.and the space.but it's just not for me I don't like single skin tents I know you explain how to deal with it but honestly I don't want to be wiping down at 2 in the morning.i had a trekking pole tent years ago and it was useless and that as put me off ever since.

I've been looking for an affordable lightweight tent and as I use walking poles I've been considering this type of tent. Lough Shannagh is certainly a humid area so it's good to see how the single skin tent handled it.

Hi Tom, thanks for this interesting video. Have you tried and tested any of the Mountain Laurel Designs pyramid tents? And if so, how do you think they compare to this design? Would be interested to know how you regard pyramid tents in general, either with a single pole or with two poles creating an A frame.

Hi thank you for the comment and watching the video.. No not tried MLD but they wouldn't be the most popular at the moment IMO due to other brands like Durston and Tarp Tent who are rapidly developing and evolving their tents.. Trekking pole tents are here to stay and offer a great space to weight ratio.. While many say they are very strong they are not for me.. I think due to them being very minimalist which saves weight you end up carrying extra other kit which then adds it back on.. Hope that helps.. best wishes Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 Hi again Tom. Do you have any information regarding the Saor by Trekkertent? It's a very similar design to the Unna. I'm wondering if the mesh inner for the Saor could be used as a cheaper alternative to the very expensive dedicated mesh inner by Hilleberg. I know it's narrower but it's the height I'm more concerned about. Cannot find the dimensions online anywhere. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

@@frederickridall628 Hi, I am not a fan of the Soar.. My camping partner bought one and we both were very disappointed.. The solid inner tent seemed to not have enough attachment points to the outer.. The tent in general had way too many rough edges.. Best wishes Tom

Hi John, If I only had one tent choice it would be the Hilleberg Nammatj 2 as it covers all the conditions that I would like to camp in. The Lanashan here is amazing but not comfortable for really exposed camping..Not sure what you mean by Gonk bag ?? Tom

You obviously know what you're doing. Of course the quality is important. A cheap single wall (too small) tent can be hell. The worst thing is condensation that drips on your face all night. Chinese water torture camp. While a good designed single wall tent has advantages like weight and a fast pitch. But I would still recommend a double wall tent to people who don't know for sure. For me it makes all the difference. Funny how a thin layer of mesh feels much more comfortable. So I just want to warn people. Especially when it is the Lanshan 1 version the weight saving is almost nothing. And you need the extra space of the Pro version so not to touch the wet fabric. Another plus of the double wall is you can use the inner tent under different (larger) flies and tarps.

@@TOMHEANEY100 There maybe be people who want to save 100 grams with a single wall tent. But then find out it's not for them. I've seen experienced hikers go back from single wall to double wall again. I also wonder what that cloth weigh you are using to wipe off the condensation? Now I'm not a hiker. My solar trike weighs 50 kilo. So I am carrying a huge teepee tent. I can sit under the vestibule with chair and table. If I go lightweight I take my Lanshan 1, the 'Amateur' version shall we say. There is a larger model with 230cm inner from Flames Creek. Same as 3F UL. That is the one I would recommend for the occasional hiker. Double wall, the seams are taped, you only need one pole if you don't use hiking poles, and it's a little bit cheaper than the Pro. But I have heard and seen plenty people who are super happy with their single Wall Lanshan 2 Pro. I guess it works. And granted, it is quite exiting to have only one thin piece of fabric between you and the elements. Camping is about emotion too. It's probably even more fun with Cuben Fiber you can almost look through and see the rain come down.

Yes I agree about the emotion absolutely but haven't stretched it to Cuben fibre yet.. I did test a Cuban fiber tent from Zpacks and no doubt it felt very special... WOW one way zip? That's a deal breaker for me. Lived in my LANSHAN 2 for two weeks in a campground in Mississippi. I had Power so I had a space heater ECT. Below freezing temps. Picking my spot to zip shut with a cord was huge. I sleep on top of my sleeping bag 😴

Hey, my last 4 camps have been in my Fjallraven so I actually agree. I dont want to get caught out in high winds and have an uncomfortable nights camping... I will get the Lanshan out this winter for sure but in a sheltered location when I am sure the winds wont be too high and especially if they are going to hit the tent from different directions.... What model of Fjallraven do you have and how do you compare Fjallraven to Hilleberg? ATB Tom

Hi no worries I didn't find this as you can choose the height of the poles and the tent is low at either end. All single skin trekking pole tents do have space between the fly for ventilation and yes this definitely make them more drafty. the 4 season inner helps here too.
