The Black Diamond Blitz 28 Pack is a great choice for a lightweight and functional summit or day pack. When you’re heading for the summit from your base camp, you’ll need to take only the essentials to get you to the top and back safely. This pack is our choice to get that done.
We recommend the Blitz 28 pack for several reasons. First, it’s really light! Weighing in at only 15.7 ounces, it’s a lot of pack for little weight. The fabric seems really durable but you hardly feel the weight when you carry it. The straps are thinner but distribute the weight of the pack well so it’s relatively comfortable. The waist strap keeps the pack from shifting when you’re moving and the overall design doesn’t restrict movement if you have any technical climbing to get done.
The top has a one hand strap to make it easy to attach when you’re wearing gloves. We found that very useful in a couple of instances for sure! There is also an internal hydration pouch that will easily hold a 3 liter bladder. The straps also have the tube guides to keep everything in place. Round it out with a couple of ice axe straps and a pick sleeve and you have a fully functional, lightweight pack for your summit push.
The pack also has a rope strap on top. We wished that it also had rope straps on the side to keep your rope from slapping the sides and possibly getting snagged on the rocks. However, we don’t see it as a deal breaker and the ropes we used seemed to stay in place well enough.
The pack can also be stripped down slightly for a little more weight savings. However, we didn’t feel that the savings were significant enough to warrant their removal.
