Whats up everybody. If you are in the market for a kamado style cooker, but you don't want to spend tons of money, then you have to check out the Chargriller Akorn. I'm not affiliated with Chargriller in any way, but I do genuinely love this cooker. I believe this is by far the best bang for your buck Kamado that money can buy. Let me know what you think and don't forget to subscribe! I hope you enjoy this review!

I recommend anybody with this grill to absolutely get the cover if you haven't, if you store it out side caught in the rain water will come in through the top vent and collect down in the bottom of the ash bowl.

My dad brought a kamado pot home from Japan in 1969 and I cooked on it for more than 30 years until movers dropped it and I miss it dearly. The rediculous pricing has kept me away but with this review I think I have a new lease on life. It really looks like a good unit with some great features. Thanks for puttin' in the work.

Basically answered my questions and helped me decide lol. Had a Pit Boss pellet grill but had multiple issues with it. Definitely gonna go with this. My concern was the reviews about rusting but I feel like those complaints are from people not taking care of or maintaining it like they should. Great review, thanks.

I love my Akorn! Mine is exactly like yours. My only gripe is that the thermometer in the lid reads low-almost 50°. But I have an electronic grill/meat temp reader so I use that and ignore the lid thermometer. Besides that, it's an amazing cooker for $300!

Had mine for over 20 years and still use it almost every weekend. holds heat very well and has cooked more meat than some restaurants. One of the best cooking investments we've bought in 39 years of marriage. Hard to regulate below 200 degrees. Only warning is that if both upper and lower vents are open you better keep your eye on it when searing. Once you pass about 450 degrees, it can take off like a rocket to over 700 degrees. I actually cracked the cast iron grate. But she will flat cook, can smoke with the best out there and fitting a stone, gets hot enough to do pizza, no problem. Walmart currently has em, on seanal clearance for under $250 here in Georgia

Dude I’ve accidentally left mine unattended for too long when trying to get the coals going. Both vents wide open…the grate was glowing red and the thermometer was PEGGED. It can get dangerously hot if not careful. Lesson learned. It smokes like a dream though!

Sorry for changing the subject for just a moment bud (your review is excellent btw and mine is coming next wed. 😊) I was wondering what you have on your garage floor? Is that a coating because it looks nice. I was wondering about the thermostat cause some have said it isn't very accurate but you didn't mention it in this review. Have you found it to be accurate? Thanks man. Just subscribed too 👍👍
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 2 года назад
Honestly my garage floor doesn’t have a coating or anything. Just concrete. Maybe the lighting made it look good or something! The thermometer on mine is ok. I have checked it and it is usually off about 30 degrees. Once you learn the pit though it doesn’t really matter. If I know I want to cook at 250, I’ll let the thermometer reach 270-280 and I know I’m good.

Great review. Glad you mentioned that it works well with regular briquettes. One thing to add is how efficient the Akorn is, I can get an hour at 500-550 on 2.5lbs of briquettes or 1.5 lbs of lump. The same cook on a Weber 22 Kettle uses 5-6lbs. As a result of using less fuel, less air moves through the cooker and food is much more moist. Most of the time that is a good thing but honestly things like chicken thighs come out better (more crisp) on the Webber kettle. I got to use a Kamado Joe Jr for a little while and was amazed that it used as much or more fuel for the same cook as the (much bigger) Akorn did, and it took a lot longer to heatup (30 minutes vs 15-18).

i'm on my 2nd acorn. first one bottom rusted out. Gave it to a buddy and he's still using it. I have a large green egg and an xl green egg. The akorn is just a good as the expensive green egg as long as you trash the temp gauge. Temp gauge on Akorn is junk. Replace it with green egg gauge and good to go. Also have the flame boss temp fan to control cooks. Its a neccesity for any smoker unless you want to baby sit the smoker all night.

This is a good review. I bought this last spring and achieved great results with just about everything I cooked on it (nothing better to do last summer but cook).I spatchcocked a turkey on Thanksgiving and it was incredible. One issue I found is heat regulation due to the construction vs a ceramic type Kamado. I personally do not wander too far when smoking, and I also use a bluetooth temperature monitoring. When I purchased mine it was on sale at Walmart in Canada for $300 cdn.

The reason you don use briquets in ceramic cookers is that the additives in briquets will absorb into the porous ceramic, has nothing to do with grates.

Any thoughts on this compared to charbroil kamander?
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 3 года назад
I've never personally used the Kamander by char broil, but I have seen it put together in stores. Personally, I like the build quality of the Akorn. I dont know, it may be just me but the Char-broil seemed cheaply built. I can speak for the Akorn as I still use it weekly and it is holding up like it's brand new. I do keep it stored in my garage and clean the ashes out after each use. More than likely you can't go wrong with either, BUT I do know the Akorn is a beast and I'll never get rid of mine. Hope this helps.

Great video and yes these are great cookers. I have two of these on my patio and a Jr that I carry in my 5th wheel. I will say that you must clean out the removable bottom of ash and condensation after every cook if you want it to last. If you don't the ash WILL cause rust. Other than that it's a fantastic cooker. I use a BBQ Guru with mine and do long low and slow pork butts and briskets. Just keep it clean and covered and out of the rain and it will last a long while.

@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 3 года назад
10 hours for a tri tip is pretty long! You might want to check it every hour so you don't over cook it! As for the wood, I always use 2-3 fist size chunks of wood if I'm using briquettes or lump coals. I have a rib cook on the akorn dropping today that explains how I set the cooker up. Check it out!

I picked up an Akorn Jr as my first Kamado style grill and it changed my life! I love the cast iron grate as it gets some sweet grill marks when i'm searing my steaks. This is a great review of a great grill! They got it right when they designed the Akorn. Affordable and very versatile. There is a charcoal elevation grate for this grill also but make sure you remove the bowl before using it. Those slots for the heat deflector to sit on can get in the way of adjusting your grate. I replaced the cast iron grate for a stainless trap door style. I just don't like the maintenance of the cast iron. Plus the trap door gives you the ability to access the fire even with the deflector in place. I also put some foil around the latch clips to increase the tension to give it a complete air tight seal. I highly recommend the tip top temp regulator also it truly makes this grill a "light and forget" cooker. When someone asks what grill they should buy, the Akorn tops the list.

Another plus is this BBQ is so well insulated that in winter in Alaska it is easy to keep the temp you want. Plus the gasket seal works well and dose not stick together like felt can. Just got my Akorn yesterday after my sisters rave review about hers. Came across your video while trying to get some tips, I liked your video so I subscribed. Gonna break it in tomorrow with a small 4.5 lb pork butt. Had an electric smoker but I just didn't like how little smoke it produced. Great thing about being retired is being able to take the time and get used to my Akorn!

Be patient with the fire and bring it to temp SLOWLY. It can get away from you fast if you're not careful. But once you have it dialed in, it's smooth sailing from there. Appreciate you subscribing!

@@JodanKenshi47 Hey mate - sorry I didn't reply bro - bloody google, youtube and adblocking fk em!. Mate I honestly did what everyone else did honestly which I learnt from this channel and others. I washed my grill/s in soapy water, towel-dried them then fired up a good lot of cheap briquettes to burn her in (Got that shit mad hot - topped out the dome temp gauge, I have production kitchen experience so I can't advise). short answer mate, give it a wash and a rinse and then burn it, baste/treat it like a cast iron grill. Honestly, that's all I did, you can salt season the grill grates themselves later if you chose - I'm only offering my experience to literal out of box. I also do new grill reviews for several manufacturers. This particular one I am buying. Good review video man. These are supposed to be triple wall thi unless they are different from the blue units. Any information on that would be fantastic.
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 3 года назад
I could be wrong, but I think you are correct. These are triple wall steel grills and I believe there is a layer of insulation between the steel as well. I know it holds the heat and is VERY efficient. I also have a Kamado Joe and a Weber Summit kamado. The Akorn is every bit as efficient as either of those, and that's coming from a Weber guy.

I had one, but gave it away after a a few years. I had an earlier version with a table and it did not have the slide out ash catcher, it also had a clip on the hood instead of a latch like the newer ones. I am a bit impatient sometimes and I would overshoot my temp range by mucking with the vents (good luck trying to get the temperature back down if you overshoot it). I bought the Weber 26" and I am very happy with it. If I overshoot the temps I can get control of it a lot quicker. I burn more lump in the Weber (not as efficient), but I absolutely love the extra real estate. Keep reviewing, you are doing a great job.

I have been using one of these for about 4 years, and it is used hard, at least 5 times a week as soon as the weather allows, between grilling and smoking. And I don't see myself buying any other grill. I have thought about buying a backup but after 4 years of use it is still in great condition. I do keep it covered and I keep the fire box and coal catch clean. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a Kamado style grill on a budget or not on a budget. If you smoke, the ceramic heat deflector is worth its weight in gold.

I love mine, only complaint is that I don’t get the visual pink smoke ring around my meat. Anyone else have this issue?
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 4 года назад
That is something that you may have to deal with on any Kamado. I think its due to the lack of air flow compared to something like an offset smoker. In order to maintain a kamado, the vents are almost closed which really limits the air movement. I love the way a smoke ring looks, but it adds nothing to the flavor in my opinion. Glad to hear others loving this cooker!

Thank you for the review. I am considering the Akorn and also potentially a Kamodo Joe Classic 2. Have you heard what kind of lifespan people are getting out of the Akorn? If it is kept in the Garage, could it last 10+ years or is that stretching it? Great job on your review!
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 3 года назад
I appreciate ya watching! I have read where folks struggle with rust issues but I can only speak on my experience. I clean the ash out after every use and it always gets stored in my garage. My akorn is about two years old and literally looks brand new. There is absolutely zero rust anywhere, so my experience has been very positive. I could see it lasting 10 years if I continue to maintain it and keep it out of the elements.

Does this take long to get up to temp? Does it take long to come back down in temp if you overshoot? Can you do 12 hour cook on 1 load of charcoal?
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 3 года назад
This thing heats up fast with very few lit coals. I can get it to temp in around 15 minutes by opening the bottom and top vents all the way. If you overshoot the temp, it will take some time to come back down because it is such an efficient cooker. That is a drawback at times. In saying that, it is so efficient I have had it maintain 225 for around 24 full hours with a completely full load. I did this as a test only without any food, but that's still pretty good!
@yesitsmario88
@yesitsmario88 3 года назад
@@littlepigbarbeque9756 Thanks for the reply, so do you start closing down vents when you're 50F from your target temp? What charcoal did you use to get you 24 hours? And final question, does this hold temp pretty well for long periods, or are you adjusting a lot?
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 3 года назад
I do start adjusting the bottom and top vent when it's within 50 degrees of my target temp. I usually smoke at 250-275, so I'll adjust it when it's around 200. I normally use Kingsford original if I want very long burn. If I'm using lump, I go with royal oak. Once it's at temp though, it stays there with literally no adjustments at all. If you open the grill a bunch it will of course spike and you will have choke it back some.

What does the weber summit do better besides the size difference? Ps your videos are great you should make more
@littlepigbarbeque9756
@littlepigbarbeque9756 3 года назад
Honestly, cooking capacity would be the number one thing. Aside from that, I would consider the Summit to be more versatile. You can raise and lower the charcoal grate which allows you to really get that steak closer to the coals when searing. You can grill with the charcoal grate further away, which is good for baking perhaps? Throw in the heat deflector and its just like a Kamado. Also, the heat deflector in the summit has hinges. This allows you to easily add coals or wood chunks when doing low and slow. If money wasn't a factor, I would definitely go with the Summit. If we are talking about saving some dollars and you want something "almost" as good as the Summit then the Akorn is the ONLY way to go. Its a really great cooker. Thanks for watching by the way! I do have plans for putting out more videos this year.
