HOW TO SEASON AND OR INTIAL BURN PROCESS FOR THE CHAR GRILLER AKORN KAMADO!!!
On this video I will be sharing my step by step process on how to season the char griller akorn kamado.
Products needed for seasoning process:
1/3 of a bag of B&B lump charcoal
15 briquettes of Kingsford long burn charcoal
1 Charcoal chimney
1 Weber lighter's wax cube
1 Lighter
1 Weber charcoal scraper
Insulated gloves
Grill thermometer/probe (optional)
Seasoning process:
1) Wash, clean and dry porcelain coated cast iron grate and warming rack, use dawn dish detergent and warm water, dry with paper towels (allow to air dry 20 - 30 minutes)
2) Spray the first coating of cast iron grate and warming rack with cooking oil (I preferred canola oil)
3) Start charcoal chimney fire with kingsford long burn using weber's lighter cube (allow 10 - 15 minutes to ash over)
4) Pour 1/3 of B&B lump charcoal into cooking chamber, spread coals evenly.
5) Pour ash over kingsford long burn charcoal over B&B lump charcoal to ignite and start burning process (use webers charcoal scraper to spread coals evenly for even burning process)
6) Close lid, open all vents and dampers to allow maximum air flow to assist heat source to reach its potential burning and seasoning process (optional - add a grill thermometer/probe to monitor grill temps)
7) WARNING - The char griller grill thermometer will be "INACCURATE" during the initial burn/seasoning process (after several cooks the thermometer will self correct itself to the proper readings of temps)
8) Allow burn/season process 2 hours (keep eye on akorn kamado for potential fire)
9) Check every 45 minutes for any smoke or oil leakage and or issues (use insulated glove(s) to open lid/dome)
10) After 1 hour of seasoning apply second coating of cooking oil (I preferred canola oil) on cast iron grate and warming rack
Optional - (you may start cooking/smoking process after the 2 hours seasoning process)

I baught one used years ago. Just replaced the gaskets today and man!!! So responsive and very controllable. I left for 2 hrs to run errands and when I got back is was the sane smoking temp of 235 that I left it at. Very much a perfect grill. It makes some banging steaks aswell. You can get this thing extremely hot and throw a nasty seer on the meat!. Highly recommend!!!

Just got one today from Lowes 7/02/2020. Putting together tomorrow & seasoning. Got a 7.5lb brisket flat to cook this 4th of July weekend. (I also bought the smoker stone that sets on the lower insert drackets) I believe you can put a drip pan with some water to help catch drippings & also helps defused heat to keep temp more consistent during low & slow smokes. Anyhow, thanks for the review & initial burn video! I also watched your assembly video!

O man congrats on your new toy brotha Jerry. Man once you master the temps this will produce some beautiful bbq. You are absolutely correct by adding a water pan it does lower the heat down a lil bit but not much. It all depends on the air flow and keep in mind to watch out for the those wind storms. This bad boy is hard to control and maintain temps just like a off set or stick burner. I am very happy for you bro. Thanks for watching and for your support. Cheers and keepbbqing!!!

At that temp you literally burn the seasoning off. Try 400-450 for an hour then let it cool. I’ve made the same mistake with pans and when they got to 700 degrees because I wasn’t paying attention, the seasoning was torched off and my cast iron came out looking silver! Good way to start over though.

Steve Sargol Thanks for the tip brotha! Man this grill is a finicky grill at first but just like any stick burner i have learned to use it pretty well. I have done many cooks on it so far and whatever seasoning it took off it got re-seasoned lol. However good tip regardless brotha. How do you like the grill? And how long have had yours? I generally like to use for quick cooks but i don’t use it that often for long cooks. I have done 3 brisket and and 2 pork butts so far and man they cook pretty fast on the low and slow aspect of bbq. Thanks for watching and for your time to comment. I appreciate your support. We’ve had excellent smoked pulled pork results, 2 large butts, seasoned with ‘Sniders prime rib seasoning, heavily seasoned, set out for room temp. Use hickory wood chunks with apple cider pan set on deflecting stone, 250-275 degrees for 8-10 hours, don’t open but periodically check temp. After smoking, wrap in foil, place in an ice chest to rest for.... 4-10 hours. You will be AMAZED 💕💕

I just bought one of these Akorn grills about a month past. First thing I did out of the box. Well after I put it together. Is to season that cast grill with Flax oil. Get a bottle 16 oz at Amazon for about $10. Thin coats, bake 500 degree for 20 minutes. Then keep repeating for 8 coats. It will make a nice, black, nonstick. That is like 3 hours. Heating your grill up and all. It is worth every minute.

This is not the way to season your grill. Char-Griller will also not honor warranty claims when you overheat your grill, according to a review I read on another Site. Seasoning the grill grates is like seasoning a cast iron skillet, you want to hold temp around 400 degrees F.for an extended period of time to let the oil absorb. When you go to much higher temps you actually remove the seasoning and your grill grates will rust. If you cook at high temps you may need to re-season the grates.

@SmokinJazzBbq
@SmokinJazzBbq 4 года назад
😆😆😆 I think you meant to say thermometer right lol. (Not the mamas lol) If so then you can certainly use it for meats. Just clean it after every cook. Wow, I dont know how old you are but man you made a smoker back in high school!!! thats freaking awesome brotha Joe. That means that you are a great pit master. As far as smoking meats I would recommend a different smoker/grill. This is kinda hard to maintain temp control. If ithe weather calls for windy conditions forget about it. I can say that I have learned to manage the temps but not master it as of yet. This grill burns hotter then and faster then any offset smoker I have ever used. So I would say do some research before you purchase this kamado. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask. Thanks for watching and for your support. @@SmokinJazzBbq it's a steal bbq, duel layered and insulated, inside there's an enameled coating similar to ceramic. Like a Dutch oven. We season/ cure cast iron to prevent rust bit also to allow for non stick capabilities. The stainless steel rack can't be cured or seasoned, you can spray oil on it, and burn a film, but it won't prevent rust on stainless steel.... because stainless steak doesn't rust. Also, rip the sticker on the inside, im willing to bet that the "chemicals" you smelled burning off inside were probably the sticker :) it's not like they are shipping these things doused in herbicides or some weird preservative. The cast iron does have a mineral oil coating tk prevent rust but that's about it, you washed yours off then re seasoned so that was a choice, similarly you could have just added the oil to the grate after burning the packing oil off. I prefer doing that, whenever possible, avoid contacting water and cast iron. Cast iron is very porous, water can get in the and before drying off you burn a layer of oil sealing it onto tbe metal. Unlikely, but possible with repeated tries.

@SmokinJazzBbq
@SmokinJazzBbq 4 года назад
Hey brotha Paul. No sir you can just use right away. It will season when you do the first burn. If you already did the first burn then just cook on it and it will season while you cook on it. I was told to spray the stone with canola oil to help season it but I was told this info after I already cook on it. Hope this helps Paul. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask. You had it up to 700 degrees for 2 hours??? That's nuts too hot to season iron! Iron gets seasoned with Canola at like 400 to 450F. I think you confused Celsius with Fahrenheit. You've burned off all the Canola oil in that first burn.
