They are without a doubt the best affordable alternative, EXCELLENT suggestion! Deffo pinning this to help get the word out. Thank you so much for that. Best regards, TGV
Right there with ya, I’m a proud Hemel owner too until the day arrives when I might be able to afford one of these! I just wish the crown were larger on my Hemel. Manual wound watches need to be a pleasure to wind…it’s a must. In that regard, I wish this review would tell me how the crown feels! I see TUG mention it’s signed, but the feel and the utility is way too important to gloss over. Also, how do those pushers feel…tactile? Smooth? Inquiring minds want to know!
I’ve watched this episode a couple of times, and it simply solidifies my interest in Hanhart. It’s now my grail watch and my son and I are both huge Steve McQueen fans so eventually the watch I get will go to him. Thank you for your very discerning and precise review of this brand and its history.
I fixated on buying the Hanhart Urban Gentry chrono, but I waited too long and lost out. The factory is located not far from where I spent a year studying at a German uni. That watch is special. This one is as well. I am not a devotee of Macqueen or enamored of the German regimes of the early to mid-20th century. What a world of suffering they unleashed. However, I still find myself returning to the history of the period and the technological wizardry of that era.The culture produced so many instruments of cold, mechanical beauty. It is true that Ferdinand Porsche was a devoted member of the Nazi party whose great love was building war vehicles. But the cars that followed had a precision and grace that is hard for me to reconcile. I love Porsche design over the years much in the same way I appreciate the work of Sinn and Leica. Hanhart watches evokes similar feelings in me. Perhaps I think a little too much about the history and implications of these objects I adore. I do not know. Understanding and unravelling the complexity of the many threads of German art, culture, technology and design will keep me busy for the rest of my life I am sure. To think that Bauhaus design was considered degenerate art by Hitler's government adds more food for thought. In any event, I should have bought the Hanhart collaboration when I had a chance. Thanks for the video as usual. You always get me thinking. --Michael
So much food for thought Michael, thank you. I share very similar interests and ways of looking that it too. It's certainly not easy, considering what you so perfectly put as the "suffering", of an unprecedented scale that effected everyone. But alas, fascinating all the same as they also created so many amazing things like you say. I think about it every time I take a jet engine powered plane. Deffo a subject for a future video, as there is so much to unpack and discuss. None the less, no country is innocent of doing terrible things in their past, I try to separate the greatness of German art, culture, technology, design, music, etc from that terrible period and enjoy it for what it is. O&U Best regards, TGV
😂 come on guy’s grammatical errors are always good 😊 we know there’s people reading your comments 🤓 all that said I prefer opinions about the real topic this cool Hanhart just order a Pioneer Mark II all black as the reverse panda is out of stock no worries as I like black dials just wish the prices were lower as they used to be … anyway no bund etc nobody will use it it’s huge plus in warmer countries it’s pointless, but would like Hanhart have the fly back reverse panda in stock… anyway bought the Pioneer wish the crown we’re screwed in not push and pull … all that said love German made watches better than some Swiss brands out there specially those micro brands that raised the price very high! I myself have few German and Swiss made Microbrand’s hope they don’t disappear soon lol😮 Hanhart always had been in the market but some watch collector’s out there now start to see these brands because @TGV congratulations to him started in a small younger influencer besides he doesn’t consider he is but congratulations Tiziano all the best to your channel mate ! Chiao ragazzo 😎
I ordered the 39 mm black dial first but then changed my order to replace it with the 39 mm fly back reverse panda. The fly back and lumed subdials, which add night time interest, were just too hard to give up in favor of a more visually accurate dial. That made the reverse panda the cooler one to me.
One of the best intros I've seen in a long time. Literal goosebumps! The Heinhart captures all the adventure and danger of such aviation while being so minimalist. Simply sublime. I think will go really well with a navi in a collection. Coincidentally, just finished an essay and was having a pint when this dropped 🤣🤣. O&U!
Thanks so much for this. I became aware of Hanhart only recently, and your comments really help clarify my attraction to this brand. My sole problem now is which dial option to go for. It has risen to the top of my grail list. Thanks again for your insightful commentary.
I am not a pilot or field watch guy but moments like these make me think twice about what I'm missing by not having one. On a more important note, please accept my wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, TGV. My best always.
I'm thrilled to see that Hanhart is continuing to shine brightly. In a world filled with modern trends, it's truly heartwarming to witness the timeless excellence of traditional companies like Hanhart. These are the invaluable gems that deserve our wholehearted support.
The panda is a stunner but I have to say that the reverse is definitely the one that catches my eye. Great video as always and always good to have the history too
Hi TGV! Wearing my 42 mm 417 ES since yesterday. What a coincidence! 😊 What a beautiful release celebrating the 140 anniversary. The special Selitta fly back movement brings it closer to the original. I hope Hanhart is going to use this movement for the normal 39 mm version as well. Best regards, Claus
I've been waiting for this release my entire life. I just love monochrome watches, these white on white hour and minute hands on a matt black dial look fenomenal. I was strongly considering the previous McQuinn model, but now, with a new movement, sexy panda and flyback function - yeap - THIS IS IT!
Always a fresh breath when such niche yet amazing watches are mentioned here, especially in the midst of all the talks and reviews of the usual suspects in various tiers and price ranges on YT and IG.
Had my eye on one of these for a while now. Saw your latest video on factory visit and it pushed me over the edge. My 417 ES flyback reverse panda is being delivered today😊. Traded in my Squale X Drass Galeazzi which although not ideal, had appreciated to almost double what I paid for it.
Love these Hanhart watches TGV! I think it's a big plus, not having a display back. Personally, I love the option to engrave a watch. Commemorating a person you love on a watch is just beautiful. Don't you think?
Such a lovely an perfect timepiece! I only with it was a 3 register chronograph with the hour counters!!! I’d buy one in a heart beat if the were to release such a version !
Great work - I would love to get get my greasy mits one one of these Hanharts though they are pretty rare in the UK. My only reservation is the bunt strap, not due to style, but due to Irma Bunt who, I am sure you are aware, was Tracey’s killer just as she became Mrs Bond in On Her Majesties Secret Service (my favourite Bond movie).
Thanks TGV for your eloquently enthusiastic insights of brands that allow me to develop a deeper appreciation of their place in the market place and their horological significance. God bless.
A great presentation of a favourite watch. I didn't realise that the subdial's were lumed on the panda version. So much to love about this watch. If that wasn't lost on McQueen, there can't be much higher praise than that.
I was just looking at this chrono before I saw this posting. I have a 417ES, unfortunately I just missed getting your design. That’s my story, a day late and a dollar short. This is just such a great piece. I’m sure you know but the suede lining is what is used on Porsche seats covers. So luxurious.
Nice creation. Nice classic look with a manu-wind that enables us to interact with it on a regular basis which is a good thing in my mind. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks TGV! for introducing me to HANHART. I finally pulled the trigger on a Pioneer MK1 reverse panda. Might put it on a red digi camo rubber :D break the rules and have fun with it i'd say
Hi there, 417 Flyback is the most underrated chronograph on the market nowadays.. Think about this; column-wheel with flyback function 417 about 2,5K. Then the new Speedmaster Pro. Cam operated basic Chrono without flyback 8K. It would be much more acceptable price for the 321 caliber, but no way with this ”3861”.
Superb video, TGV! Got to watch with the family last night and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. Learned a great deal about Hanhart. It is definitely inspiring to see such a brand soldiering on independently in this day and age of the corporation. The fact that their watches off so very much at such an attainable price it fantastic. My son was very intrigued by the comic book you used in the B-roll photos. Any chance you might give me the title of that comic that had the pilots dogfighting? The historical significance and the quality make this piece such a easy purchase for anyone looking for this type of Chrono. The fact that it is far more exclusive and more of a IYKYK piece makes it more appealing, in my mind. Thank you, as always! Be well. Onward and upward, my friend.
So happy to hear that, especially from you! I could deffo see you with one. As for the comic, it is "Enemy Ace" by DC Comics, but not the WW1 books, these are a WW2 spin off. Short, but amazing. I will add them to the amazon store if they still have them now. But the WW1 with bi-planes are great too. Onwards, upwards and safe flying my friend! Best regards, TGV
@@theurbangentry Thank you very much! I greatly appreciate it and will definitely look for them on the Urban Gentry Store. Fantastic. Yes, a Hanhart has been on my wishlist for quite a while! Who knows what *time* will bring. Be well, my friend. O&U
I still kind of prefer the historical accuracy of the recently released 417 ES 1954. With that said, with the addition of a column wheel and a flyback function, the 417 ES 1954 Reverse Panda might just be the obvious pick (also the fact that the new release is only $320USD more than the previous is pretty astonishing)!
Yeah it really bugs me. Either one can have the accurate 1954 dial or the more exclusive collumn wheel. Not both. With this option I'm still favouring the 1954 version, if only by a hairs difference.
Operationally the 39 mm reverse panda with fly back is the more historically accurate watch, but visually the all black dial is obviously more accurate. Which one of the currently available options do you think McQueen would've chosen?
Thank you TGV so much for providing so many Hanhart watch reviews in one video! What a great historical wrist watch especially in the 38mm classic size! Stay healthy and well as always!! Nicholas L 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤❤❤⏱⏱⏱🦖🦖🦖
Thank you for your educating videos. I am learning all the time, today I learned that Type20 is the “code” for watches i have checked lately quite often. Keep on creating such great content!
Loved this video, TGV! I just added a Sinn U1 fully tegimented to my collection, and it's such an awesome watch. Have a great Thanksgiving, thanks for all this content!
I've been waiting for this review since I got my email from Watchbuys this morning. As always, fantastic. Not sure if there will be enough room in the watch box for the Red Lion AND a reverse panda 🐼.
This might be recency bias but this could be my favourite release of 2022. Hanhart coming in strong right at the end of the year. Still a month left for someone to take the crown!
Just when you think I’m done with watches for a while Hanhart do this. Always loved this watch and it is really tempting to fill that chronograph hole in my collection. Would go for the black dial and luckily for the moment the 39mm is unavailable otherwise my credit card might have been abused. Not sure if I could pull off the 42mm on my 6.6” wrist but usually that depends on the lug to lug width. If it’s around 50mm or a shade under I may just be able to make this work especially as the display back is really cool.
Great watch! Yet I am a bit sceptical towards the Flyback. I owned a Sinn 256 Flyback many years ago and Sinn never got it to work properly. It was endlessly in their shop again and again and in the end I traded it with Sinn for a 144 GMT. Keep my fingers crossed that Hanhart´s Flyback is something that will work for decades, not just for a couple of days like in my 256 Flyback back then.
Sorry to hear that, Sinn typically are extremely good with QC. I wonder what caliber they used? I had an issue like that with a Hamilton chrono once owned, which I must of had fixed 3 times. I had the same movement again in a different model of the same watch, no problems. Sometimes it is the luck of the draw, especially with more complicated movements like chronos. Anyways, good luck and thank you for sharing that. Best regards, TGV
Sinn used a 7750 which they upgraded back then with that Flyback Module. They had it offered only very short period - probably due to the problems. That was in the mid 1990s. They used that short lived module on Sinn 103 and 156 watches. I have no idea how many were sold. I guess they were in their program for less than one year - haven’t actually seen any of them on retail since then.
had one of the original new releases but let it go as the new flybacks in 39 came out ..getting one for a special birthday just which to choose panda or reverse
I actually had a reservation for the 417 ES 1954 but I was able to move it to a 417 Reverse Panda Flyback in 42mm. I think it fits my style better and I can't wait to rock it. Shame that it's not antimagnetic and has a 21mm strap size though. Either way, super excited to add it to my collection.
#1.5👍Beautiful chronograph at a price that doesn't insult! A tool can be an art work too; however as a Commercial Pilot the best pilot watch was a digital with sapphire glass in all stainless including bracelet that was stolen from me! It was perfect for timing an instrument approach; including internal lighting. ERAU 80 CFIA&I ret.
Really great watch and great review! Don't understand why they don't include more rotating bezels with this 30-60 minute chronographs, so yo can track also hours in a very ingenious way. IMHO a chrono that can't register hours (in some way) is a complete waisted opportunity. Thanks for the content TGV, you are the true OG
Thanks for this great review. I personally prefer the clean style of the Laco Pro 43 when it comes to historical pilot watches. Nevertheless, the Hanhart is a wonderful watch.
An excellent vid as usual. I love to remind you of you getting me into this hobby years ago by recommending the Seiko SNK809 as a good starter watch. I still love that thing. The slim style an aesthetic are still awesome. BTW, I paid $42 with discount on my 809. It's mine...forever. Thank you.
Tutima military chronograph with the Lemania 5100 is a high favorite military watch ⌚another stellar video pizan 🇮🇹.Heuer Pasadena PD is another favorite. Love Lee Marvin's watch shot in Delta Force of the Heuer
Love your videos, Hugo cameos have me rolling on the floor, very funny! Which begs the question are you the voice of Hugo? Oh and your team-ups with Marc Frankel are just superb (Hmm, two wrist watch wearer, odd that). Finally I've a Tissot 1853 Chronograph for almost 20 years now and just good as i first purchased it. Love those time pieces. Keep up the great work you guys!
I appreciate they didn't cut the numbers on the dial, pet peeve of mine on chronographs is when they can't design around the numbers and cut through them
Excellent as always TGV. I feel I should be sitting down with a Hennessey brandy and a cigar watching your videos!! The style is just unbeatable. You might remember my Insta post about getting the Uranus Moonswatch, loving the colour, hating the quality and doing the unthinkable of ordering a Pagani homage of the same colour! Well it arrived and it's great! 316l stainless steel, sapphire crystal, screw down crown, 100m wr and the Seiko VK63, perfectly lined up, which is also in the Dan Henry 1964 I own! I'll never buy a Pagani again, but I wanted that colour scheme!. If I wasn't half way across the world in Istanbul, I'd even send it to you so you could review it!! €100, rather than the €250 I was silly enough to spend on the plastic Omega.
Always a top notch review TGV. Hoping you’re loving my hometown. If you get up to Boston, give me a heads up. Way to get Hanhart on the map here in the US!
Thank you so muchmy friend, that would be amazing, I always wanted to visit Boston. Hopefully some time next year. I look forward to meeting you one day! Best regards, TGV
Great idea, this was very common in the 1930s, a lot of pilots did that, that is how it started, so in a strange way, you are doing it the most authentic way. Thank you, great comment. Best regards, TGV
Thank you for broadening my knowledge still further with this brand. A nice in depth review and yet another timepiece with great history and collectability. If its good enough for Steve Mcqueen it's good enough for me. Good work fella
Wow that hanhart is really tooltastic really love the over all look very roughed some thing you can really use a any work site and not ever think about in on your wrist.
Love your channel and greatly enjoy learning about watches. I wish I could see one of these watches in person. For me i'd have to have one with a red pusher haha
Stunning watch. I love the panda dial! On another note, I realized today that Hamilton released a 38mm version of the Murph watch from Interstellar. Any plans to cover that TGV?
They could take my money today but none of the models area available on their website even on back order. I'll be keeping a very close eye though. Great value for a flyback chrono
What an watch what an icon this is the watch no hype no showoff or bragging how i got the watch from AD and most important king of cool just choose this over Rolex omega or anything at that time
This watch is awesome. Now we just need Dan Henry to come up with something similar 🤣 But in all seriousness, they look great. Kudos to Hanhart for not going overboard on the faux-tina as well!
Superb watches, you are such a bad influence, another watch to ad to the want list, thanks for another fine video TGV, hope all is well across the pond.
Really great video, I had never thought about hanhart much before but now I am really interested! Do you think we could see a video just on Steve McQueen in the future? Focusing on his watches and style could yield a lot of content.
I’m really loving this watch. 39mm is a max size for my wrist before it looks oversized. One day I might get it and there’s no way I’m not modding back this red button. As for why has it not become as popular as others… I think the design although classical it’s not very.. mmm… modern, it looks old not retro. Very much set in the period the original was design - it has kind of monocle vibes to it. Personally at the age of almost 50 I start to appreciate the style however 10 years earlier I would not pay much attention to it.
beautiful watches, and again an excellent rewiew of yours! Agree on having blued hands would have suited the panda variant well, maybe with a more cream-coloured dial. Glad to own a Tristano (!) red🦁, but the 39mm 🐼 with flyback looks just too good...
can you do a video on the OMEGA SEAMASTER PROFESSIONAL 2254.50.00 / 2264.50.00 from its birth in 1998 (as far as i know) its one of the best dive watches ever and yet almost nobody talks about it
Some things are just inexplicable. But I think that it's primarily to do with this monstrous marketing of their history and the stories hidden in it that Omega and Co. put so much in the foreground. Even if you pay more attention to Hanhart and many other brands, I'm kind of glad that such watch brands with their hearts in the right place still exist.
