Marty was a GREAT singer and songwriter. And he LOVED racing so much it gave him satisfaction. He did it for the enjoyment of the sport. A great singer, songwriter, musician and loved racing. But above everything a loving husband, father and a really great PERSON.
Got to see Marty race a few times. Last time was at Talladega in the 70's. Pretty good foot on the guy! Had he had more time to get more driving in, he would have won a few races i think. Helluva singer too!
I seen a Marty Robbins car just like this one in Nashville in 2000, I jumped the barricade and had my picture took inside the car. It was in a country star museum and the section the car was sitting in was a Marty Robbins section. The car in this vid sounded awesome..! I wished I could take just one lap in a car like this, It would be a dream come true for me.
Awesome car. Last of the B bodies. Doesn't have the panache of the Charger or the Coronet Super Bee, but it was the last Mopar ride for the King, he jumped ship in 79 to gm. Must of been Marty's last race car, I was kid at the time he passed, in the early 80's. Thanks for the vid. Keep it off the wall so the young ones can see what a " Stock Car", used to be. Instead of the crop they run today. Good Luck in your future racing.
@ljcebalo07 Thanks for acknowledging that you don't remember the days when they were all trailered and some even drove to the tracks. Your right though about being covered. When it was shipped from the museum in Alabama it was in an enclosed trailer. People really get a kick seeing it on the back of the trailer going down the freeway in Southern Ca. It is a fun car and people can get in it when it is displayed and take photos. When the First Dodge Petty raced is finished you will not get close
I had to go back and watch the video and yes it looks like a trailer hitch to me. Not my car but took video from it. They have a 605 CI. create motor in both of them is what I was told. Nice catch on the hitch. I was really paying all my attention to the Marty Robbins car.
The magnum's were pure dog's and long enough to run 3rd and 4th with one car. Inman said it was the worst car they ever tried to race. Marty got Bobby Allison to fix him a cheated up carb. He said he just wanted to pass Petty just one time and he did then pulled into the pit's. When they came over and asked him what happened he admitted he was cheating and just wanted to pass Petty one time but he never told who fixed him the carb. Bobby told the story a few yrs ago.
ACTUALLY IT WAS THE BAD SOUND FROM THE CAMERA THAT WAS SKIPPING ON THE TAPE. NO PROBLEMS. STILL TAKE IT TO SHOWS AND BECAUSE THE CAR WAS SET UP FOR THE BIG SPEEDWAY TRACKS IT DIDN'T HANDLE TO GOOD. IN PROCESS OF PUTTING ALL NEW ROAD COURSE SET UP UNDER IT AND THEN WE WILL RUN IT AGAIN.
At Darlington last year, they had two of the old big block cars they ran around the track for a few laps but not up to speed. The sound was great. Big difference.
They did not run big blocks after 1975. This is a 78 Dodge Magnum. They ran 355's based off the 340. An engine that was developed for the T/A and AAR used in road racing at the time.
