This is maybe out of nowhere, but, is it just me or Volo could be lusamine's ancestor as well? Think about it, Cynthia and cogita are good people, they wear black, and they're important characters in the story. Lusamine and Volo share a lot of similarities as well; they both wear white and yellow, they're crazy and evil, and they would do anything to reach their goals. They all have to be related somehow; because they even share the same aspect, they have the same haircut, with one eye being covered completely.

Right? I honestly had no idea that Volo was going to be the final antagonist. Love that they made Cynthia's ancestor the villian and Cyrus's ancestor someone who supports the protagonist.

I knew he would be a villain, just didn't know how the reveal would play out, and a 6vs8 pokemon battle is pretty cool

He had been spooky till the very beginning but it was in a way that you couldn't tell if he was just lying about what he really knew, like a smart character that helps you and follow you but doesn't say all that he knows. Like, you could tell there was more to him that what he wanted you to know but since he helped us from the very beginning and never said anything remotely evil I wasn't sure if he turned out to be evil, I actually thought he might have been sent by Arceus to guide us, or that he was Arceus, or that he was another time-traveller like us that just wanted to befriend us. But no, he was the mad-man in till the reveal I couldn't tell. Best twist in pokemon.

He's probably one of the creepiest villains in the series. Everything he does is recontextualized and is immediately apparent his stalking nature. Some even notice how omnipresent he is during the game, as if he were following you. He was.

He’s also extremely strong as a trainer. While most people don’t even have ONE Pokémon, Volo has 7, one of them being a legendary with two forms. He is literally the strongest Pokémon trainer ever, as he just ignored the fact that trainers can only reasonably train 6 at a time. His desire to meet Arceus is SO STRONG he ignored the physical limitations of humans. He defeats the protagonist, who is most likely the champion of Sinnoh already, and has completed two Pokémon journeys at that time. Volo isn’t even a human. He is a superhuman, who will do whatever it takes, even if it’s impossible, to meet Arceus. Volo is the strongest person in the history of Pokémon training. Actually, I’m just going to write an essay about this specific encounter. Cynthia is the opposite of Volo, and this is shown through a lot of ways. Volo’s encounter theme is Cynthia’s battle theme, while his battle theme is the encounter theme of Cynthia. Volo’s ace is Togekiss, while Cynthia’s ace is Garchomp. When you get to Giratina’s second phase, you can hear its heartbeat giving out. Giratina, who is SATAN HIMSELF, had his flight-or-fight response activated by the protagonist. Volo says “Boo!” every time you encounter him, and the plate that he has is the Spooky Plate, which represents his catch phrase and also the fact that he has Giratina. At the beginning, he has a Togekiss. In his second battle, he has a Gible. He teaches you the backstab technique at the beginning of the game. When you beat Giratina’s Origin Forme, it says you FINALLY beat him, representing the fact that he has a second phase and also the fact that almost no one beat Volo and Giratina first try. GameFreak was an absolute GENIUS while developing Volo’s character and encounters, foreshadowing the final encounter and having a TON of symbolism. TL;DR: GameFreak was a genius while designing Volo and it would have been impossible for any other company to do this.

To be fair, Cynthia is only really hard cause the Gen 4 pokédex is ass. The likelihood of you having a solid team of six going into her fight is slim to none unless you know what you’ll be up against and bring the appropriate mons with you.

​@@CarnidoomSure, it's better but still not super diverse compared to modern Pokémon games where you have a great variety of options to take with you to the Elite Four, hence why they feel a lot easier in comparison to the earlier games. There's also less accessibility to evolutionary items you'll need for the real heavy hitters available to the player. The Pokédex in SM is for example very diverse and you're likely to have 6 strong Pokémon on your team by the end of the game unless you deliberately use weaker Pokémon, as there's plenty of strong Pokémon you can easily find in the wild on your journey and the modern games make most of the evolutionary items accessible. Plus, her Garchomp is just a straight up stat check. It hits hard and fast, very few Pokémon in the game can outspeed it or take a hit from it so you either have the team to deal with it, which you likely won't on a first playthrough since you don't know what she'll have, or you wipe, simple as that. Compare that to f.e. Diantha whose Mega Gardevoir is also kind of a stat check for the same reasons but doesn't hit as hard as Cynthia's Garchomp and you'll likely be overleveled due to the EXP Share, meaning you're unlikely to go into her battle without a solid response to it (and admittedly, her AI and the rest of her team is ass lmao). And you'll also have your own Mega to counter Diantha's and likely solid counters to her Gardevoir as it has plenty of weaknesses to exploit, whereas Garchomp's only real exploitable weakness is Ice. For Cynthia, you're either gonna need a bulky Pokémon that can take a hit from the Garchomp and also one shot it (Togekiss f.e. since it's immune to Earthquake) or have your own Garchomp that outspeeds hers, both of which require prior knowledge of Cynthia's team, hence why she's tough to beat. There's no real strategy behind her team that makes it a difficult battle, it's just that she has the strongest Pokémon in the game that can outspeed and one shot most of the Pokédex, as well as the rest of her team being pretty stacked in their own right.

What is curious is that some people don't recognize that Cynthia's theme starts playing even before the battle starts. The violin is the battle theme and volo's battle theme is Cynthia's intro theme.

for me Volo was as difficult as Cynthia, so if it was for me, Volo would have achieved his goal like 83490432 times XDD (I must say tho I don't like playing with legendaries; I only used mesprit when I saw it was impossible to win him lmao)

Pokemon has been in my life since it first came out as red and blue here in america when i was 4. I have loved every moment of this franchize. Arceus was an absolute wonder and holy crap did they make an amazing story with this one.

Helped me. The only reason I won first try was from Revives and a Manaphy with Moonblast.

I defeated him first try with being under his level by 3-5 levels with no legendary though I made all my Pokémon stats thing to 10 and I used 3 max revives( the battle against giratina wasn’t needed but I wanted to make sure)

Hard cut to Giratina pretty much one-shotting almost every legendary you can get.

My Torterra carried me through all phases, it’s insane. The legendaries didn’t really do much

@@lauxantilles I almost made that mistake but got it after seeing all the good reviews and I'm glad I did because even tho I've played every mainline Pokémon game and most of the spinoffs, legends became my favourite and gives me hope for the franchise again. So I can also say I feel bad for that group as well

The best plot twists aren't the ones that you can't see coming, it's the ones you _should have_ seen coming, and Volo's great for being suspect due to the reasons you listed and yet still blindsiding so many people.
