So we’re all getting a little sick of hearing about Rolex and Patek Philippe all the time. Sure, they’re popular, but there’s a wealth of watches beyond those two best-sellers that we’d be missing out on if we didn’t go looking elsewhere. So how about this, then: the perfect three-watch collection without a Rolex or a Patek Philippe in sight!
Featured Watches:
Nomos Ahoi Date 551
Grand Seiko SBGJ213
Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Classic Cars 03.2046.400/25.C802

@B B They have monopolized the top tier, Patek being probably the classiest and Rolex having the best marketing department. The most BORING brand is IMHO A. Lange & Söhne who produce well-machined and heavy-looking German tanks. If I were to buy anything from Richemont group, I would go for Vacheron Constantin rather than ALS.

They tend to be bigger on paper than in person, the particular GS in the vid is 40mm but lug to lug is only 46.3mm...wears more like a 38mm. The case shapes also lends to a smaller feel on wrist. So pair that with the out-of-this-world finishing, its pretty breathtaking
@michaeleccles3336
@michaeleccles3336 4 года назад
Have to agree with the comments made, they do tend to wear a little smaller than their dimensions suggest. I've a midnight blue spring drive and, luckily, the limited edition red dial 'autumn' hi beat. 40mm and 39.5mm respectively. I've small wrists but because of the lug width, curvature and some clever brush and polish, it feels slimmer and smaller than it should. If they ever do manage a sub 10mm hi beat or spring drive then I think they'll conquer the world.

I owned the GS GMT hi-beat for a short while. Loved the watch except for its thickness. If Seiko can slim the case down a couple of mm, it would be a winner. The bracelet isn’t on the same level as the watch head, but it’s still quite nice. I replaced it with a snowflake - which, IMO, is the best GS model available.

I like the Zenith but I'm worried about the servicing cost and frequency of high beat movements - is it expensive to own?
@AriesUmbra
@AriesUmbra 4 года назад
Not really. Basically all the high Hz components are dry lubricant and silicon. So a typical service would be 300CHF every 5 years , and over double that cost if you need a complete service if for example the case needs resealing or a new crystal is needed. Hope this helps !
@idontknow9862
@idontknow9862 4 года назад
Just a thought...I had a very similar Zenith on bracelet. I was absolutely gobsmacked by the poor quality of the bracelet! Flimsy and similar to a regular Citizen or Seiko. I didn't get to have it serviced, sorry I can't help you with your query. It has been sold with the speed of light.
@seppa1019
@seppa1019 4 года назад
@@AriesUmbra Silicon is used only in some of the models escapements. Wast majority of el primeros are made of traditional materials and use normal watch lubricants, but this should not be a problem since internal part replacements and gaskets should be covered in the service price. Also its always a full service or regulation of timing, if it doesent need one. Not a service or complete service. Don't take it to place if they offer cheaper service and more expensive sevice:D
@AriesUmbra
@AriesUmbra 4 года назад
seppä101 yeah sorry i meant as in depending as what is needed done to it. If you take your watch of any brand to its manufacture it will cost different amounts depending on what components need to be replaced. I know, for example, the sapphires on my omegas cost extra should they need to be replaced at service. I hope this has cleared up what i had stated in the previous message
@TraptbyBenjamin
@TraptbyBenjamin 4 года назад
modern watchmaking components, the alloys, and the lubrication used means that watches can go for much longer periods without servicing. this includes high beat movements. vintage high beat movements will see more wear on their parts, lubrication that needs cleaning (to prevent gumming up), etc

This was a great video. Thanks for showing some watches that are well made, have a pedigree, good looking, with outstanding movements, and are reasonably priced. One question I have for you is, what your thoughts are about Baume et Mercier watches? I know they aren't top tier watches but they are a company that has been around a long time. They have their place in watch making history. Did they "sell out" by becoming a department store brand in the 1970s ? I have a vintage late 1950s early 1960s 18 karat gold, super thin case wrist watch I inhereted from my Grandfather. It could use a good cleaning and slight restore on the face. I know it's not worth a lot as it only tells time, no date no second hand but, is a nice looking watch and runs fantastic. Why did they fall from being a great watch company to just another watch company?

You are talking about importing it from Hong Kong, Japan or China etc. I suggest, as those prices are usually low yes. But ever heard of import duties and tax (VAT)? If I import a £2300 watcg from outside the EU, I actually pay £2800. And what to do if something is not right? Then you have to deal with an "unknown" seller on the otherside of the world. There are more things to consider then just price, especially if you buy pieces in the higher price range you want to buy from a reputable source. Just buying the lowest price on chrono24 will get you in trouble eventually (also there are a lot of fakes/partly fakes with unoriginal parts on chrono24).

At 38mm and just 8.9 mm thick, it wears lightly and comfortably on the wrist; plus you'll save over $1000 on the price of the Ahoy. All told, It's no wonder the Orion 38 Date is the choice of discerning minimalists the world over.

It's their Tuxedo dial, they've done it in the past, on the SARX045 and 047 (blue and blue/green), and GS in white SBGA147 and 347, but this one in all black is just something else! Seiko is the king of dials if you ask me, no one does such pretty, smooth and tasteful dials like they do!

I really really want the Zenith. More beauty then many Rolex. The spec and colour. ❤️

They can’t make enough money off of these second hand so they’ll never get them

Your photo is superb, even nomos quality is not near your quality (just looks at the edge glass, you can see some dust)....😁👍👍

Very nice! Keep doing more of these! Enough of Rolex and Patek, both models which are not available. I don’t want to hear about what I can’t get; only about what I can get.

Ah great now I can go to bed. I can't believe I actually wait up for these. Thank goodness I'm retired. Great review. I've been eyeing that Nomos maybe next year.

I'm proud to say that the three watches suggested in this video are the models I intend to purchase as my first three - full credit to Watchfinder for guiding me towards what to look for! Question is... Which to get first?!
