Thank you. I’m OMAD for almost a year now and don’t consider it “fasting “ at this point. I just eat a normal meal with real, whole food containing very little carb. I was curious about extended fasts for a while, but I’ve decided not to stress my 68 year old self to that degree. I’ve lost a lot of weight, slowly and steadily. The real shocker is that without a lot of exercise, my body is a completely different shape. And let me tell you! I feel great and all of my bloodwork health markers are in the healthy range. AND with OMAD only, I’ve had a lot of the benefits purported to extended fasting such as autophagy. . .skin tags disappeared, rashes gone, other lumps and bumps gone. I’m more than satisfied and I give credit to you two for freely giving me the information I needed to do this.
Diane, I am also 68 years old and just started OMAD about a month ago. I had already been keto and doing 18-6 intermittent fasting for two years and lost 60 lbs, but the weight had quit coming off. Since I started OMAD a month ago, I have already lost 10 more lbs. I look forward to enjoying some of those autophagy benefits you mentioned. Best to you.
I finished a 48 hour fast last night with a mug of bone broth, then half an hour later, three scrambled eggs and then a regular meal another hour later. My biggest challenge after fasting is that i want to gorge myself on everything I can lay my hands on.
This makes so much sense to me, and bone broth seems the perfect answer. Before I started IF, I would sometimes have a slice of cheese first thing in the morning. I had come to the conclusion that carbs for breakfast were not doing me much good. Now I see there are many reasons why that worked for me. Thanks you two, for all of the guidance & for sharing your knowledge with us so freely. I recommend you to others quite often!
Perfect timing. This is my most recent bio-hacking experience. just finished a 7-day fast (nothing but ice water, teaspoon of cod liver oil twice a day, teaspoon of salted butter twice a day with meds). My longest fast, intended to learn/experiment/hack if I should stop taking Metformin (answer is so far "yes"). Before your video arrived I exited the fast by consuming a cup of beef bone broth with 2 tablespoons of salted butter). My gut started to make all kinds of noises, from all over the gut. The gut woke up. I am monitoring my numbers (BG = 84, ketones = 4.8) to see if they drop at noon, where I will eat a slightly more challenging meal. I attribute being able to slowly transition to food after finishing my fasting session to my stopping the Metformin. After previous fasts I would SUDDENLY have intense cravings and consume everything in sight after the first nibble of food. This time, I really feel no such craving. Been closely watching my BG level and ketone level over the last 9 days. Goals are autophagy (been there the last 4.5 days) and keeping my BG level below 80 (much harder struggle) as I have been a diabetic for over 30 years, no longer using insulin since May, now off Metformin (?). Thank you for helping me succeed, you are a part of my journey (it's not the destination, it's the journey).
Enjoyed this. Great work docs!! My post menopausal body does not like 20- 24 hour fasts let alone extended fasts. With everything going on this year and as it gets closer to the election, stress/anxiety are my struggle. Stress eating....oh my goodness. Now that I have stopped so much stress eating and stress but no longer watching the news and staying out of Facebook and being careful what I watch here, I am doing much better with fasting. I am also recovering from major surgery since Sept 1st. I fast mostly 18/6 and somedays 16/8 on the days I can feel my body needing the food to heal. I just let my body be my guide. I cant follow "the rules." Anything that puts stress on my body right now just needs to go. Lol. Keith I just adore your mugs. Love People (mostly) Exactly how I have been feeling (mostly) 😁😂
I'm with you!! Following my body's "Rules" is getting easier as I get older, as I think she has learned a few things over the years ;-) Hang in there! If we stay off FB, etc, we will survive 🤞🙏
@@KatTheScribe Me too. I am 51 and it has taken a lot of trial and many errors to figure out I dont fit into a box or mold. Stay of FB and keep on keeping on. Always moving forward.
Next Ramadan you should try a 30 day fast, no food or water between sun up and sun down. Be interesting to plot the effects on human body. Fast is traditionally broken with a date and a cup of unsweetened black tea
Definitely break longer fasts with bone broth and maybe an ounce of grilled chicken. Wait an hour and then eat regular meal. It does get better over time. I like two good vanilla yogurt with a few blackberries for any stomach issues. It definitely was a trial and error approach to breaking my fasts.
Breaking my first 7day fast on sunday. I am thinking 1) Bone Broth 2) Lean Chicken and if I feel well 3) More lean chicken and broth. And the next day do eggs, avo, meat etc.
Did a 44 hr fast recently & made the huge mistake of breaking fast by eating carbs.. smh.. let's just say I was in the bathroom the whole day. Gotta be very careful when re feeding..I learned my lesson.
I did a 5 day butter fast. I had a tbs. of butter every 2 hours and a cup of hot water. After 5 days I lost 15lbs. My blood glucose was down to 69. Next day I had blood work done and it was the first time my Dr. Smiled at me. Everything on my blood work was in the low side of the normal range. I was never hungry but did get bored of eating butter every 2 hours.
that's a great experiment . Yes did you gain the weight back . Fats don't spike insulin to much but are full of calories that's why you didn't get hungry . If you do a clear fluids with a no sugar no carb electrolyte you will also have no appetite for long period. And you'll get great autophagy.
Let's see, 2 tablespoons of butter == 200 calories, taken every 2 hours over 16 waking hours, would be 7 x 200 (i.e., 1400) calories. Depending on your basal metabolism (confirm with cronometer or MyFitnessPpal app) you could loose weight on this diet. Butter is amazingly healthy, with lots og micronutrients. Not as healthy as raw liver though (refer to Dr. Paul Saladino's work). My body tells me when I need some additional fat, and my go to, in order of preference, are butter, cod liver oil (because of the pandemic) and MCT Oil. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Now, if you are like me, I occasionally go to the refrigerator and nibble off a bit of nice cold butter and let it melt in my mouth. Only about a teaspoon. VERY satisfying. I am very definitely a carnivore .
Could you please do a video about water intake? I drink a gallon a day & I'm starting to think that's too much. I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this. Thanks!
Love your videos. I watch them all and go back and watch them again. I do have a question though. Dr Keith you love your coffee as I do. Do you count the carbs in black coffee? I drink about 5 cups per day so when staying at 20 carbs that is a significant amount of my carb count. Thanks again.
When you put something in your stomach, how many minutes does it stay there before it moves on? And if you add more food just before the first food is about to leave? What happens to each round of food? Is 1st round kept there longer? Or is 2nd round flushed on along with 1st round??
Is it safe for a diabetic to fast longer than 24 hour like 36 or more. I am type 2 on Metformin only not insulin.what electrolytes should we take during fasts. 61 yo male.
Thank you for all your videos Vos conseils me servent beaucoup Aussi j’aime beaucoup votre couple et ce que vous dégagez comme pures sentiments Khalid from Morocco
Doc Keith, do you feel like your metabolism is still hurt by that 10 day fast? Or did you feel you bounced back? The longest I have done is 36 hours (give or take). I have been very hesitant to do more in part because of your experience.
I've been a subscriber for almost a year and really enjoy your videos. However, your emails always go into my junk file because you put asterisks in the heading. Could you edit out the **? Apparently my server reads this as a porn site.
Hi Sue! We actually don't put any asterisks in the title, in fact, the email I receive is simply the title with no punctuation. Your email host must be rendering things differently.
…yeah exactly, exactly what my thoughts were when I heard that. No wonder he was miserable, keeping his digestive system active. That’s more akin to starvation.
