Yes and let me tell you, being on keto for 3 years, keeping off 20 pounds for that long, and being told by my doctor that my fasting glucose is too high (101) and I should consider lowering my carb and processed food intake. I don't know how to reduce it from less than almost nothing. It makes me want to punch a doctor in the face.

When I started Ketovore in earnest 6 weeks ago my BG reading leveled off into the high 70s. But then I noticed more dawn effect if I eat more than one meal per day. Reduced my fat and protein intake. Eliminated coffee and drinking nettle plus chamomile tea before bed and nettle only in the morning. Within three days my average BG is down in the low 80s!

Now that this video has been out for more than a year, there has been time for plenty of comments to be made. And many of these comments are saying the same thing: Being low carb at first is great for blood sugar, but then the blood sugar starts to go back up. And stays up. This has been my experience as well as many others. I am now so invested in keto and carnivore that it is challenging to learn my way out of it. 4 years ago when I got started on the low carb, my blood sugar was usually right around 95 or lower. And I could feel it! My eyesight was SO CLEAR. I was reaping the benefits!! But all of that has changed and no matter what I do, my blood sugar will be 115 at its lowest. I have been seriously considering chunking this "diet" and adopting a low fat moderate carb moderate protein diet.

Thanks for you inputs. My thoughts on this are from my own personal experience as well as others I watch online. As far as Protein causing possible glucose spikes it seems there are too many Carnivores now who do not see Protein as an issue so that kinda casts doubt on just how excess/too much Protein might be an issue. And I might add the concept that Gluconeogenisis is a demand driven process thus only takes place when the body "needs" added glucose. Of course when that might be comes in to question. I am a recovering T2D(IF) using mostly carnivore myself. Wearing a CGM has illustrated some interesting things for me. One of which is I can see my fasting glucose numbers slowly rise over days and it typically takes an extended fast(48-60 hrs) to lower those numbers back down to where I am comfortable again. Even lower dawn effect numbers. It has been suggested to me to try carb cycling but so far the jury is still out as if that if helping me out or not. For example when I feel my numbers are good I usually dip down into the 50's and 60's(blood glucose) at night during sleep. When I wake I might go to the 80's. Fat coffee will raise that to the 90's but will quickly come back down to the 80's. I can eat a ribeye steak and see my numbers rise to 100-105. But without an extended fast those same numbers slowly creep up about 15-25 points. Again this is my personal experience and might be different for others metabolism.

I have been on Keto for about 6 months. At night when I go to bed my glucose at about 1 am is about 87. I fast from 10 pm till 1 pm. Then I test my glucose and I am at about 100 from the dawn effect. Mine is later than others. After I eat about an hour later a keto meal I will be back to about 90. My blood sugar is very stable from Keto. My A1c was 5.8 in July 2020 and as of end of Sept. 2020 my A1c was 5.2. I am 62. Lost 20 pounds of fat so far and 3 inches off major body parts. My skin looks great. Tested back in the middle of August and my fasting insulin level was 6.0 uIU/mL and fasting glucose was 108 mg/dL, so my calculated Homa-IR is 1.6. This is above optimal, but below the threshold of early insulin resistance, according to what you show on this video. So I guess I'm doing ok. I've been carnivore-ish for a year and a half. My blood glucose is "almost always" in the 105 - 115 range, regardless of the time of day, fasting or not (unless I eat some carbs). One thing interesting is that, sometimes if I eat some carbs in the evening, the next morning's fasting glucose is down in the mid to upper 90's!

Ive been doing keto strict for 5 months. I workout hard every day. My fasting blood sugar is 110. I’m not quite ripped but I’m not far off. Yet all the charts say I have prediabetes. I’m never hungry and feel great physically but now I’m worried about this. I’m wearing a cgm. Meals barely raises my blood sugar. It’s very stable. But my base line rarely goes below 100mg/dl unless I fast hard. Exercise is the only thing that causes it to spike. Not sure if I need diabetes meds or not.

Because of a type 2 diabetes environment on my system (above 200 blood glucose waking up), I started the keto diet radically. I am facing 104 blood glucose empty stomach just after getting out of bed and the normal used to be 70-75. Sometimes 82, 85. I'm on keto for about 3.5 years and started to lift heavier. Trying to get muscle mass. I confess that I am very concerned about it...

Sometimes a high BG reading can be due to not getting enough blood in the strips. Or sometimes just bad strips where the top was inadvertently left open a bit too long. Or just a bad strip. Which is why the ones that are individually packaged can be more reliable.

I struggled with the dawn effect for quite a while. I started checking my sugars at 2 or 2:30 in the morning for my fasting values. I always gained 20-30 pts by 6am, I now attribute that to cortisol and the dawn effect. Your explanation agrees with my ideas, its good to hear some acknowledgment. With a strict Keto diet and intermittent fasting I have eliminated Insulin and got down to high school weight, a little more to go. Thanks for your time and experience.

Love your videos and you just touched on a problem I am trying to reverse without success. Adaptive glucose sparing or perhaps starvation-induced pseudo-diabetes. To keep it short... almost 17 years on Keto (to prevent clogged arteries) Did a 164 day water fast 6 years ago and noticed after I only needed to eat 3 maybe 4 meals a WEEK. Don't eat eat more then a small piece of meat and some spinach salad for a meal. I do eat butter for a snack and might eat a handful of my fried walnuts/Brazil nuts/hazel nuts on a non meal day Did that for 6 years all the while running a cottage resort on 5 sloping acres to a lake. Very active every day. I now have very low fasting insulin and slow to respond. I have tried eating 150g carbs for 3 days, eating 3 meals in a day for two weeks, increase my caloric intake in general and nothing is kicking my insulin system into gear. After a 3rd visit to an Endo he kicked me out and said he only had time to help people who can not control their glucose levels. I am using fasting acting and over night slow acting insulin if I want to eat even close to "normal" Any idea if this is reversible.? Oh I did convince the Endo to subscribe the Gad antibody test which he has never done and he claimed it came back inconclusive

Thanks for a calm and collected description of this issue. I wonder if high blood glucose that is not caused by pathological insulin resistance is damaging to the body? If so, knowing you have it through one (or more) of the other reasons might suggest that taking a little carbohydrate immediately on waking would lower your levels sufficiently by creating some insulin to avoid damage without contributing to eventual pathological insulin resistance. A croissant with your first coffee might be sufficient. What do you think?

I heard about the dawn effect on another channel with the suggestion that it might be better to check my blood glucose and hour or two after I meal. I did that and it has nearly always been right near 120, right where it should be that long after having eaten. I've been on and off keto a few times over the past decade, always did really well on it, never had sugar problems. In fact, whenever I'd test my own sugar or have bloodwork drawn, my glucose would always be around 70-80, and my A1C always tested around 4.5-5.0. This time around, I had my blood tested for the first time in three years and discovered I'm diabetic. At the time of the blood draw, I had been on keto for exactly one full week, and my glucose came in at 164 and my A1C was 8.2. I'm resisting my doctor's attempts to medicate me and alter my diet (he thinks I need to eat more fruit and take several drugs) because I know keto will eventually reverse the whole situation. It seems my dawn effect started appearing around 1 year after I started low carb. It wasn't very high but the last few months it's went up a little. Beat Diabetes (YT)mentioned nuts have a slow decrease in glucose readings . After reaching my goal I eased back into a peanut snack late at night and I understand nuts have a long curve on glucose and slow to drop and that may be the cause in my case. Just read it yesterday so we'll see. Good this morning but I fasted yesterday so I'll see in a few days by not eating nuts after lunch. Glad to see your video. I may fit into any of the reasons you mention, protein, etc. Also Covid came about the time my morning glucose eased up so it may be mildly stress related, glad you mentioned this. First, gluconeogenesis is demand-driven. If you have a CGM, you can test this with ease. Your glucose spike is NOT cause by excess consumption of protein. In fact, protein should not be considered a source of energy as it is very difficult for your body to make the conversion. There are really only two macronutrients, fat and carbohydrates. This subject has been broached by Ben Bikman in many of his talks. Secondly, glucometers are nearly systematically incorrect by 10% on the high side based on multiple tests within the keto community. So that morning reading of 100 is, in fact, around 90. Otherwise, another very good video. Thank you.

I have been doing Keto and fasting 16/8 hours since January and from my numbers were doing good , but the last 3 months are so my morning glucose numbers are so high example 160, 180 even had 207 one morning mine you nothing since night before. So had 3 month blood work done my A1c went from 6.4 back to 7.0 A1c I was upset with myself result wasgiven on Friday 13th. I don't know what to do because I was doing so well now having a set back not happy at all. So my doctor wants me on a second medication Rybellus so here I go again.

The observation here is that our body can make glucose, without eating carbs or sugars! The deception we get going in, is that the only source of glucose in the blood is from eating carbs or sugars. This surprised me too after about 4 weeks on the diet. While my sugar no longer spikes up around 200, it runs between 90 and 118 or so after sleeping and sometimes even in the day.

My hgb a1c now puts me at prediabetic. I started watching my bg. I run one teens - one twenties round the clock. My fasting glucose is higher than one ten when run by my doctor. I've tested my bg monitor with my test strips against a co-worker's. They measure within eight. Even after intermittent fasting my bg stays high. If I eat 15g of carbs in a meal, my bg drops to under 110. What is going on? I'm very frustrate and can't figure out what causes this when I don't eat carbs.

If someone is really serious about solving blood sugar issues quickly a raw vegan ketogenic diet is far superior, it lowers glucose from liver much better. Very few people are on this diet but they will usually look 10 years younger than someone on just keto.

This is why the GKI is a better metric to use. Lots of reasons the glucose can be high or low. The GKI is not perfect by any means but better then blood glucose alone.

I am a type 1 diabetic who started keto a few days ago. The first couple of days were very good as far as numbers and insulin was much less than normal. Then, yesterday, my numbers were high....not the high you are talking about, but actually high as in 200-290. Insulin was not working so i ended up taking twice the usual amount yesterday. Only a little better today. I am not stressed or sick. Got any thoughts on this scenario??? I really want to stay on keto, but concerned whether it will kill me.

My blood sugar problem started 4 years into keto, No keto expert will ever be able to explain it. I had overeaten on protein but not that much, had carbs are under 20 net carbs, been fairly active. My theory is that once the body is lean and slim, the person doesn't have the so-called fat reserves anymore. Therefore, it converts protein into glucose and breaks down muscle to be able to carry on doing this. My case is most likely this. It seems to be a misconception that the body just keeps producing ketones and feeds on body fat. Long-term ketoers claim that their ketone readings are low, under 0.5 and even lower. Experts may say the body makes just as many ketones as necessary. I call this bull..... Also, another misconception is that the body just digs into its fat reserves. But there isn't fat reserves. Others claim that even when you are slim, you have decent amount of far reserves. Nope, lean or slim aren't the same things, nor have we got the same body type. It ain't matter if there is still some fat reserves, the body won't use up everything otherwise we die. To conclude, I believe lean people will have a hard time staying on keto for the long-term as the body won't be able to efficiently use fat that is rather low in the body and as a result, protein and muscle are used to make glucose to fuel the body.

@garrya7576
@garrya7576 3 года назад
@@nickbardan3867 Hey, I have been working on this for quite a while now and I was able to lower that blood sugar by completely ignoring the basic rules. Instead of fasting, now I eat fats three times a day. Fasting only works if the one has ample fat storage, otherwise, the body will dig into protein sources such as the muscle. Protein will then be turned into sugar. I also believe, when this happens, the body has very week insulin response compared to eating carbs. That is a myth that once the one is in ketosis, the body will just keep making ketones forever. Especially, in cases of active people, staying in ketosis becomes hard. I have read a study in which they said that proper lean endutrance athletes struggle to stay in ketosis. Dr Berg actually put out a video on this a couple of months ago. One important thing I noticed that I feel the best, the strongest and the healthiest when I have a tad bit extra wait on me. This could explain my theory meaning the body finds enough fat sources and no need to create glucose. I am going to get my blood test done next week, so I will see how my HbA1C has changed.

I have watched many different videos on this topic and not one ever explains if having higher blood sugar like that will ever go away. Is it ok to have a fasting blood sugar of 105 on keto? Is it ok if doing 45 mins of fasted exercise lowers it to normal, between 80 and 90. Is it ok if the blood sugar levels never go above 120 after a meal but 2 hrs after tends to hang out around 100? It never goes above 140 but tends to never drop below 100 unless I do exercise to lower it.

Dr Keith - Any thoughts on carb cycling when weightlifting? I’m told that elevated insulin is good post workout because it shuttles protein into the muscles. Some are suggesting high glycemic carbs so you get a spike without the sustained elevated glucose levels. Any thoughts on this?
