Happy new year. In this video I show different ways to emulate the Amiga and try to guide you in what may work best for you. I visit the A500 mini, The mister FPGA running minimig, the PC with UAE (winuae, fs-uae, amiberry) and the raspberry pi 3 and 400. Considering and showing both the look and feel and the emulation but focusing on the emulation and value on the guiding.

Thanks for the video. I disagree that TheA500 mini works extremely well for games emulation. I bought one late last year only because it was on sale and I got it really cheap. It turns out it has hardware just a little bit faster than Rasperry Pi3. Which means it cannot do proper copper emaulation. So games like fire and ice, lionheart, Jim power and the flying level in Turrican and probably more games, stutters. Now, these are some real classic games. And for a product released in 2022, which is called TheA500, one should expect the emulation to be close to/or perfect. Also, I find it clunky to use compared to my real whdload Amigas. Also, the choice to bundle it with a controller instead of a Joystick was a bad decision. Everyone used Joysticks with their Amigas. Except the CD32 of course. Which was released at the end of Commodore. I tried to use joysticks with DB9 to USB and it works, but you still need the controller to get all the functions. Really clunky. I have packed my TheA500 mini away. I had hoped for a full size version of TheA500, which I had planned to buy, but now after trying the mini I'm not interested. If TheA500 Maxi is based on the same weak hardware it's not interesting for me. I was much more happy with TheC64/TheVic20.

Thanx for this comment. I suspect those games I tried on it did not really use the copper a lot. The reason I pointed out it is only capable of running games was that I tried some OSC demos on it, and it was very bad at it. I will pin your comment so people can read it and put it into their "pile of info" when figuring out what to get for themself.

the more I look at this the more I come to realise that for software emulation, a PC in a white desktop case with some Amiga stickers, a white keyboard (Also maybe with Amiga stickers) and booting directly to Amigas OS or something is probably the best software emulation solution. Kinda what you talk about in your video. Proper hardware to emulate all aspects with Amiga. I wouldn't call FPGA emulation, but hardware re-implementation. I have a couple of Turbo Chameleon 64 V2s myself. And these also run Minimig AGA core. FPGA is supreme. No input delay and just like the real machine. @@proteque

Technically you are correct@@larsenmats. It is a recreation. But I think (hope?) for most people it was more helpful to include it in the list of "emulators" than not. Even though emulation is not the right term for it. Regarding your plan for booting directly into an Amigaemulator. Did you see my #dosember video? In the demonstration part of that you see that PC boot directly into the emulator (the bios, ram counting etc is in the emulator). That is the way I do it where I want to fool my brain into nostalgia mode. It works very well for me at least. I get that warm fuzzy feeling on my fake big box Amiga from it. Hope you find a good way to light the nostalgia fire.

Great video, Proteque! I agree that the MiSTer is the most accurate and complete setup, but also requires the most setup. My favorite for a mix of power, price, accuracy, and simplicity is the Pi400. It's just a pleasure to use.

Thanx for your kind word. When I rewatched the video I noticed I was a bit harder on the pi400 than I ment to be. I did run into som cases where it strugles though (on same config in amiberry as the PC don't). Those cases was mostly demos. What I really dig about the 400 as I mentioned in the video is the form factor.

Yeah, Pi 400 with AmiKit rocks, and the emulation speed makes it quite a usable system.

Actually a very big part of retro feeling is the look and feel of the periphicals - mouse, keyboard, monitor, diskdrive, joystick. As I had A2000 and A4000 back in the days, the main unit was on the side or even under the table often. Of course with fading memory about the not so nice things, I do not want the ballmouse or a smal crt anymore. But my A2000 keyboard was the cherry type (A2000 Braunschweig edition), so working quite well. You can even change the stems of the switches to cherry brown or blue (reversible modification) if you like the more clicky feeling. I prefer Cherry keyboards since back in the days. Also the new tank mouse is a great input device. Alternativly I have an original Amiga mouse converted to optical. For monitor I use an 5:4 older LCD. For nearly all periperie you can get adapters, ready2use or diy. Nowerdays you can find a lot of stl for Amiga cases online, so you might print your own case. One interesting hardware for emulation might be the Framework Laptop core unit. They come between 330 up to >1000€ (plus RAM and storage). If you are not a windows gamer, the most cheap core unit should be more than fine. Also if you have a Framework laptop and upgrade the core after a few years, you might reuse the old core for an emulator. However, being a laptop component, it is quite smal. So you could place it in any Amiga case - even the A600. Creating a quite powerful all in one maschine with quite nice Amiga feeling. Powerfull enough to use as a normal PC (as this is the intended use for the core anyways) but also as an emulator. The reason I prefer modern PC as a basis for emulation is quite simple: Any seperate Amiga / Amiga emulation mostly collects dust. Using the Amiga keyboard / Mouse on a dayly basis, even when using windows, is more fun...

The fysical things is a very important part for me too. That keyboard is the dream. Very hard to come by these days. Happy for you having one. Thanx for sharing the framework laptops. Looks like a really interesting consept from what you write. Upgradable core. Will def check it out. Cheers.

@@proteque Luckely I am German, the A2000 Braunschweig Edition was made in Germany and Cherry was a german company back than. So it is much more easy to get theese german keyboards here. Actually I have bought 2 in the last 5 years. Quite nice with the doubleshoot keycaps (except for the two Amiga keys). There are PCBs to build your own Cherry keyboard (or convert an "normal" A2000, A4000, CDTV or CD32 external keybord) on github. The problem is modding the keycaps. It is possible to do so, but a lot of work.

You did inspire me: it was your Greaseweazle video that got me started. Btw MagPi magazine did an article on my Amiga in the January 2024 issue and you get a mention :) Edit: I have a Mister but I couldn't get tye Amiga emulator to work with my RiscPC CRT display. Amiga games on a CRT would be good, I think. My other idea is, when I upgrade my laptop, to put my old Framework mainboard inside an Amiga case.

I am really surprised that you failed to mention AmiKit. This system knocks spots off many other emulated platforms. It is refined for Linux (POL/WinUAE), Windows(WinUAE), RPi(Amiberry), MacOS, PiStorm and Vampire, and works great to emulate the Amiga Workbench whilst including gaming through iGame/WHDLoad. The Amiga workbench in AmiKit is a great optimisation of what the Amiga should look like today. It is not bloated like caffeine/coffee/PiMiga but rather it adheres to the origins of the true Amiga OS. It even has a group producing a version for true Amiga hardware (AKreal). The creator encourages the support of Amiga products and also financially supports them, unlike others. Apart from that, this was a good review of Amiga emulation in 2024. Thanks for the video.
@proteque

Amikit is indeed a super setup. One of my favorites. The reasons I did not mention it here was that I focused on the platform for the emulation in this video. And not the amigaside of it. The reason pistorm was there was that it was the easiest way to demo the rpi as a emulation platform. I do plan to make a video about the different "distros" as well. And amikit is off course included there. Alongside pistorm, aiab and several others. Amikit is indeed a very good desktopsetup for the Amiga (emulated or real). Thanx for mentioning it so others get the tip to try it out.

Raspberry Pi 400 is more than powerful enough for most, if not all, games/demos up to AGA. Some 060 demos might struggle a bit, but for most users it will be the ultimate Amiga. For gaming I use a Raspi 400 + RGB-Pi connected via RGB-SCART to a Sony Trinitron CRT. After I got the RGB-Pi I stopped using my MiSTer. Also, the guys behind RGB-Pi OS are gods. ;)

@Proteque-CBN - Thanks for sharing your thoughts and views on this subject, Having played with PiMiga 4 on the CM4 (2GB@1.5Ghz), the RPI 400 ( 4GB@1.8Ghz) and the RPi5( 8GB@2.4Ghz) there are very notable differences between the models. Firstly as you predicted the RPi5 is pretty much flawless, the RPi400 is quite impressive, as you mentioned there are sometimes little glitches ( not a deal breaker I may add ) - the CM4 however does have more pronounced issues and crashes. I will say, that prior to the RPi5 the Pi400 really impressed me and certainly gives you those **feels** and up to that point was the best ARM based EMU experience. However, all really benefit from booting from USB 3.0 - the uSD card really causes some noticeable stuttering at times during the emulation. the RPi 5 doesn't seem hindered by this, however that has an offloading IO chip ( acting as an old school PC south bridge ) There is this thin line between Emulation and Synthesis - the latter being FPGA based approach, however there is an enigma that I am sure you have heard of and that is the PiStorm. With a modest investment of OCS/ECS hardware and a PiStorm + RPI Z2W or RPI 3A+ ( or higher ) you can get quite the experience - ranging from just a VERY FAST CPU and Memory Emulation - to RTG emulation on the host system. I have this setup on a rescued / repaired A600 and its spanks even my fastest 060@100Mhz + 128MB RAM A4000 with CybergraphX Admittedly the A4k could AGA its way where the A600 in its configuration cannot. And while there exists a PiStorm adaptor board for the Amiga A1200 (PiStorm 32) there is still the slow-chip-memory transfers that hamper some AGA games / productivity, causing artefacts and corrupted screen graphics. Should you get to revisit this subject, an interesting line of thought would be to see what a low-cost PiStorm for an OCS / ECS based machine offers for the prices point versus a cheap x86 pc implementation. both in terms of setting up / working with and finally playing / using. Really enjoyed your video, i look forward to more. Z.

Thanx for the great comment :) I havent got around to testing a pi5 yet so it is nice to hear it works as good as I hoped. I actually has a machine running with pistorm now. a pimped out A500 in a desktop case (did a video about it if interested). it works very well for using RTG-software and things that benefit from a fast cpu. however it is still an A500 so no demos etc that is fun to use when first using a fast Amiga. I have a pistorm in my 1200 as well. that works pretty much flawless. it is like having a 060 in there. Not using the RTG part of it on the 1200 though. I prefer to run it as an AGA setup.

I'd like to hear more about when using a MiSTer would be better than using a decent PC with WinUAE? I bought an Amiga 1000 when they came out and became President of an Amiga user's group in 1986. Over time I also owned an Amiga 2000HD with 68030, 11 megs of ram, duel SCSI and Video Toaster, an Amiga 1200, and a spare Amiga 1000. Everything I've thrown at WinUAE has been spot on. I also use an RGB CRT for authentic display in a MAME arcade cabinet and use classic Wico leaf-switch joysticks & buttons from the early 80s. WinUAE emulates pretty much every Amiga that has ever existed and other variations like the CD game console, 68060 and various expansion peripherals too. Exactly when is MiSTer better than WinUAE? Also, WinUAE is donationware. You don't have to spend a lot of money on it, or take up additional space for my devices in your home. It will work fine on even very old PC's that you already have laying around, laptops, etc. And you can use your PC for a whole bunch of other kinds of emulators too and other tasks. I haven't found the emulation off in anything I've done with it so far.
@proteque
@proteque Месяц назад
If you do not mind running it on your normal PC, WinUAE is super. It is only on rpi I have run into big issues with UAE, never on PC (at least not the last 10 years or so). As I said in the video it is one of the ways I highly recommend. It works extremely well. As long as you setup your PC-monitor in 50hz. Where the MiSTer (and Mist) shines is latency. but WinUAE is within what doesn't bother me.
@n8goulet
@n8goulet Месяц назад
@@protequeI haven't experienced any noticeable latency in anything I've run on it so far. I'm running an $800 CRT RGB 19" arcade monitor (60hz) so that would also cut down on some lag, but I test things out on my Windows laptop first and even that seems fine. I generally find detecting a millionth of a second difficult. LOL. But I'm glad these companies can find someone to sell their products to that 1% of us at best actually might benefit from vs a "free" alternative. But in actuality, the free products often offers advantages over the paid MiSTer solution too. Some things might be better on MiSTer and some better in software emulation. Hardly worth almost anyone paying for, but I was wondering what those exceptions might be? I haven't seen a single hiccup yet. The Amiga was my life in the 80s. I got an Amiga 1000 when they came out, and was electric President of an Amiga users group. I eventually owned 4 Amiga systems. Today, I prefer WinUAE and because of that, I sold my 4 original Amiga systems.

@proteque
@proteque 4 месяца назад
To be honest I do not know. The mist and mister use the fpga core named minimig. So perhaps the same fpga core as the hadware also called Minimig?. What I do know is that the mister got more momentum/users. That may give easier access to help. I think it is hard to find the correct info about what is best of the fpga systems, and I only own Mister myself. The Minimig hardware seems to support real cpu which in theory make it able to go furter (060). But that is very expensive and with a real 060 I honestly would buy a real 1200. :) not a clear answer as you may see. Wish I had them all for testing to be able to say.
@gcolombelli
@gcolombelli Месяц назад
"Better" depends on how you intend to use it and how much you're willing to spend on it. Minimig is both the name of the FPGA core that replicates original Amiga hardware behavior on FPGA and the FPGA board that ran that core. It's no longer made as some keys components were discontinued. MiST offered a new FPGA board that could run both the Minimig and Atari ST cores, then it later gained quite a few other computer and console cores. I don't know if it's still made and sold, but looks like it used to cost 225~250 USD. MiSTer is another FPGA platform for retro computing and gaming, based on a commercial, off the shelf FPGA development board. The issue is price... the base board alone costs ~220 USD nowadays and a full system can easily go over 400 USD, depending on what kinds of inputs and outputs you want it to support. If all you care about is Amiga running on a VGA CRT, MiST may serve you well. MiSTer has native HDMI output which may be a big plus for some people. And as proteque said, it has a lot of "momentum", so it might be easier to get help on MiSTer than on MiST, but I'm not entirely sure, as MiSTer's community is quite varied and lots of people only care about arcade or consoles, while MiST is almost entirely focused on Amiga and Atari ST, so if you care a lot about those systems, it's not entirely clear if you're better off on MiST or MiSTer. There are a few other options worth mentioning. I've seen some MiSTerynano demos on cheaper Sipeed Tang boards, based on Gowin FPGAs. Those are a lot cheaper than MiSTer and about half the price of even the MiST, but those are not as "polished" and still being developed. For those who like high end stuff and don't mind paying high prices, the Vampire V4 might be an interesting system, but it's even more expensive than anything but the most ridiculous MiSTer setup. And we may get even more FPGA based systems this year, but those are higher end stuff that will be overkill if you're mostly interested on something to run Minimig.

@@gcolombelli Thank you for filling in some blanks here. Much appreciated! I really wanted to go the Vampire road a few years ago myself, but seems they have lost a lot of their devs and is more of a one man project now? Not really sure how things is going in the vampiry camp atm. But indeed a cool setup if more modern Amiga desktop usage is the goal. At the moment I am using more and more my pistorm based system. for desktop use it is super. a cheap way to get a fast RTG-setup from a stock Amiga. Still some (more and more minor) issues to fix regarding running games and demos (due to chipram speed) but I have other setups for such. Regarding a bigger FPGA for minimig use, I would actually love that as it could be a way to get the full 040 or even the 060 in there as well. Could be a very good recreation of the kind of systems I actually had back in the late 90s. Rather than emulating them like I do (the mister is not as fast as the real Amigas with 060 etc I used to own at the end og the Amiga era). cheers!

@@proteque Glad I could help. I'm a big MiSTer fan and I've always been captivated by the Amiga, but living where I live, it's always been hard to get my hands on one. The Vampire V4 looks like a fantastic product, the only issue it has for me is that, as a proprietary solution, it's fate is tied to a single company and we're already seen what it can mean for it's long term success and "survivability." MiSTer, being a hodge podge of open source components around a proprietary-but-somewhat-open platform loses on the polished vertical integration aspect, but wins on the "survivability" aspect... just look at how Minimig managed to outlive it's original platform and will likely outlive MiSTer as well. I too would love to see 68060 support added to the Minimig core, but getting that can be a bit hard. It's hard enough to make a company care enough to add a feature to a product, getting it into an open source project is in some ways easier, but harder on others. Sure, "anyone" can do it, not just the one company, but if it's a major feature, you won't find many people out there with the required skill set for that and it's not always so simple convincing them to help with that. I am very hopeful, however. One major bottleneck on FPGA development compared to software emulators is the sheer difference in numbers of FPGA developers vs software developers. In the past, FPGA boards were always expensive and hard to find where to buy them, now it's getting a lot more affordable and easier to buy. RISC-V also has been a positive force in this regard, I've never seen so many universities promoting this kind of hands-on learning and making their students actually get this kind of experience before graduating.

Amikit is a great setup. It is such a cool modern take on the amiga desktop. I havent tried it for a few years though. The newest is based on 3.2 isn't it? I should give it a try. :) i recon you run it in winuae? Winuae is as good as it gets as an emulator. Thanx for reminding me of amikit.

You said something interesting to me, you said it in the context of games but does that mean if I get a pistorm it would be best to get a Pi4 board and not Pi3?
@proteque
@proteque 4 месяца назад
The rpi doesnt need to emulate the whole computer in pistorm so it is not a one to one between those claims. I think there is still some bugs to iron out before the rpi4 is ready to be used with pistorm. One thing to keep in mind is that with the pistorm you will run into problem due to the slow chipram. it is mostly a system for running RTG-stuff. Due to this I have stopped using the pistorm myself.

@mughug9616
@mughug9616 4 месяца назад
MorphOS is just too much money ($87) for initial purchase and is perma-locked to one computer. Then it only runs on a very specific number of PowerPC-based computers including some of the old Apple PowerPCs. At least with the $100 Raspbewrry Pi 400, you have access to a decent Amiga emulator (Pimiga for free) the underlying Raspberry Pi OS (and full Internet access and browsers) at the flick of a switch and many other emulators and uses in one device. Even the $30 AmiKit for the PC is a valid alternative.
@proteque

Yes in this I did focus on the classic. I plan to showcase AROS a bit in a while. but morphos costs too much for me to get going. with the need of an ppc machine as well.

Thank's for the rundown of different solutions. My recomendation would be the Apollo V4 Stand Alone. It feels like a real amiga since it's fpga-based but Apollo also have developed new functionality such as the hyperthreaded 68080, SuperAGA, 16 channels Stereo sound, 3d Accelerations and much much more. I have real Amigas but actually prefer this "New" hardware. Performance is better than RasberryPI and PowerPC.
