Frost Hammer has been my favorite. Ashlands is epic. A worthy foe for a Viking, and worthy of the drama.
@capatheist

Yeah...ok people. You DO NOT want to upgarde any ashlands base weapons that can become gem variants beyond level 1... It will cost alot of hard to come by resources. And when you switch to the gem variant (wich is what he should have been using in the test, because no one thinks its a good idea to run plain nidhogg, but it would of gone against his argument had he used a gem nidhogg as example because you have to take their effects into account, wich you should because mistwalker has effects ) Anyway the gem variant gos back to level 1 no matter what level the base weapon was... So dont waste resources

I just feel like spark gets obsessed with root armour or frost stuff being still viable way after their acquisition... Wich I agree is cool. But you're drawing some long bows to try to imply their superior to current biomes top equipment
@Firespark81
@Firespark81 2 месяца назад
That wasn't the purpose of the test. I used that sword and at the levels I used it to eliminate variables. When will people understand variables screw up your data and need to be eliminated... You are right you would indeed not upgrade that sword unless you use a gem in most cases. But once again none of that has anything to do with the question I was trying to answer and that is does silver damage let you kill charred faster? Also also the only one of those gems that's actually gonna do you any real good is the lightning one and I'm not sure the chance to damage an adjacent enemy is better than chilling multiple... That probably just comes down to play style tbh.
@capatheist
@capatheist 2 месяца назад
@@Firespark81 "does silver damage let you kill charred faster".. than what? I dunno man.. seems to me the answer is yes more than half the Ashlands are undead including charred, so it does do more damage to charred than a non silver counterpart. Aside from warning people not to waste materials upgrading base weapons My point was that the mistlands counter part is not the base nidhogg. As you pointed out in the video, their straight weapon damage is similar. But you then went on to list silver damage and frost effects as pros towards the mistwalker. So the counterpart to that for the comparable damage sword is the effects they gain from gem variants.. I guess I just misinterpreted the whole thing. The answer is yes... Silver does extra damage to undead enemies. And frost/silver weapons are definitely king when you first arrive..
@Firespark81
@Firespark81 2 месяца назад
Bro please go watch the video and actually listen to what I say. At no point did I say silver damage was a pro for the mistwalker. I literally said it's basically pointless. A dot does not kill as fast as something that attacks at the same speed and doesn't dot. As for variants, blood is same situation gives you 0 cc. Poison would be bad as charred are immune so you are wasting stamina. Lightning same situation as base sword and gives 0 cc. Crowd control just makes combat easier. It's really that simple.

Raising skill to 100 will be unreachable for most users, including me, I guess, without cheating. Dying, especially at higher skill levels, hurts and adds to partially lower damage when fighting multiple mobs at the same time which again increases the likelihood of you dying in that process.
@Firespark81
@Firespark81 2 месяца назад
Where did I say in the video you should or could reach level 100?
@Kessra
@Kessra 2 месяца назад
@@Firespark81 No need to get defensive here :) Sure, I get it. You basically try to reduce the numbers of variables in that equation as higher level do not necessarily mean higher damage, as shown in your video. But with reduced costs more of the resource could be used either for further hits and thus more damage or for other stuff like protection bubble or dodge rolling which inherently increases your survivability and thus your overall damage (being dead = 0 damage after all). As such, higher skill levels in the end do matter, at least IMO. Others also mentioned that you probably should have tested gemed versions here. I haven't had the chance to get my hands on such an upgrade so far as I have yet to get into one of these fortresses and farm enough flamental ore. The past couple of hours I was more focused on farming enough potions, taime Askvins and prepare enough buff food besides fortifying my little home I build right at the shore where I stranded, so I'm not that far into the whole Ashlands progression yet.

Silver arrows work well especially when you sneak attack 'cause both the pierce AND spirit damage is increased by x3. With a decent bow skill and a level 3 or 4 spinesnap, you can one-shot tweakers and marksmen. You can get a warrior down to around half health from a single silver arrow sneak attack. Valkyries will take about 400 damage (a bit more than 25% of their health). Against morgen -- just use the best arrow you have because they're only weak to lightning. Also, spirit damage stacks so you don't have to worry about wasting ticks by hitting it with another arrow.
@Xendrasch
@Xendrasch Месяц назад
Reason that the Mistwalker (and Frostner and Frost Arrows) do not stagger as fast as a weapon doing equal total dmg, is that frost and spirit dmg do not contribute to fill the stagger bar. Only blunt, slash, pierce and lightning contribute to the stagger bar. That is why the Nidhögg of Thundering imo is the best of the one handed swords. Especially since the 20% chance chain lightning effect also contributes to the stagger bar of all enemies around. So your "but", arguing that frost dmg makes a weapon better, disregards the fact, that frost does not stagger. Frost is always a tradeoff for staggering capabilities. Thus is is a choice between two effects, that each have their benefits. Frost helps with crowd control, staggering helps with killing faster. So i find non frost weapons, work much better in duels, but frost weapons help more with crowds. Albeit, as soon as you get your hand on one iolite, the non frost weapons get overall more powerful (see below). Also there is no reason to not carry two weapons, but many for it. It is always good to have a backup, if durability runs out. And if one carries two weapons anyways, you can just have one frost and one stagger weapon, using frost, when a crowd gets too much and stagger, otherwise. And carrying a frost arrow loaded bow, to slow enemies combined with a stagger type melee weapon, worked also well for me. All that said, by far the most powerful weapon in the Ashlands (and the game so far) are imo the (Thundering) Berserkir axes. Their fast attack rate makes them already very powerful, without Thundering. But with it, the chain lightning effect procs so often, that it gets incredible powerful. And even if you accidentally (or intentionally) hit trees, the chain lightning can proc, hitting enemies in the vicinity. It is also noteworthy, that faster attacking weapons profit much more from upgrading, since all weapons get the equal 6 (or 5 for most axes) points of dmg per upgrade (I think knives are different, but I don't use them). For the faster weapons, that means a much higher percent increase of their initially lower dmg, and thus a better dps increase. Thus the berserkir axes profit a lot from upgrading and the +10 lightning dmg they get from an iolite gem. Also since the iolite upgrade already adds 10 dmg and a 20 to 25 chance to extra aoe chain lightning dmg, even tier 1 ones are better than a fully upgraded bare flame metal weapon. Btw: Frostner and generally one handed club type weapons do not have shorter range of their primary attack, than one handed swords. Both have exactly the same 90° arc of attack and reach of 2.4 meters. Although the knockback might make it feel that way, since you miss combos, because of it. But if you do not combo, they hit exactly the same. Another effect that might swords seem to have higher reach, is that their primary swing attack suffers no multi-target-dmg-penalty, which makes them much more powerful against groups. I think that was not always so, but came with some update, maybe with Mistlands introducing Krom. The secondary attack is indeed different, with swords having 2.7 m reach with just 10° arc, that makes it very easy to miss. x3 dmg (x3 stagger). The clubs offer 2.4 m reach, with a better 30° arc. x2 dmg and x5 stagger. So slightly lower range with three times the arc, means far better chances to hit, if your aim is not perfect. Also the finding, that Krom kills slower disregards, its higher reach and stagger capabilities, compared to other swords. In that case, the higher reach with its wide swinging arcs, that have no multi-target-dmg-penalty, actually help quite a lot, at keeping enemy groups away and/or staggered.

Other thing ou have to consider is that if you are fightin in a real combat experience in Ashlands its really rare the time you can go hammer on an enemy for 4 seconds straight without needin to dodge or kite something around. This is where the DoT of Mistwalker comes in handy... when you are strikin once, kiting around, strikin again, dodgin and such everytime you are not hittin the enemy at least they are slowed down and receivin damage over time, thus making a faster and easier kill than with the flat Flametal Sword's damage.

@veruslupus

My gut feeling would be that it's going to be slower for frostner. I feel that the knock back mechanics are what makes it viable. Sort of ease vs efficiency. 1 on 1 I'd go frostner to make it easier to avoid damage. Multiples though I'd favour attack speed, I'd go so far as to say mistwalker over the new sword for that chill effect despite the slower kills just for the easier management of multiple enemies. I'm not an expert though just my logic
@Cascadence87
@Cascadence87 2 месяца назад
I find that despite the fire resistance, multiple enemies are STILL best handled using the fireball staff due to it's even split with blunt, causing you to do around 75% of base damage (Still strong). Also need to consider that after your first stronghold raid you can upgrade your Flametal weapons to the three varients. The Flametal Mace when upgraded to lightning is really nice too (As is the sword and dual axes) due to the chain lightning effect. Poison upgrades stop enemies turning when the immobilise procs allowing you to get behind them and relentlessly punish. The blood upgrade feels garbage tbh.
@michaelmok3646

The whole reason you want the new weapons is not its base stats but the magic infused gems you give them. Do a video on gem infused weapons and you will see the utility can be greater than what the mistwalker and frostner can do. But dont get me wrong they are a must for entering ashlands.
@Philipasu
@Philipasu 2 месяца назад
I think the main difference between normal weapons and magic staves in Valheim is the resource they use. Since you need to use stamina for BOTH attacking and dodging (or running) that makes it a little more difficult, you got to take care not to end up exhausted (no stamina) and mobs ready to make your life bar disappear. Meanwhile staves use eitr/mana and that bar charges separately. Thus for mages you use stamina for positioning and eitr for combat, a more safe style. However mage armor is much weaker than warrior's heavy armor, so getting hit, well, hits differently, lol (pun intended).

The massive "but" most definitely applies to how damage is applied. If you play on very hard then you know trading and situational advantage when and how you apply combos to things, changes things drastically. Krom is still better with damage at spacing with its heavy attack and at the same time the slow from mistwalker helps applying damage without the possibility of trading. I play solo and on very hard so parrying without the bubble and being able to apply damage traditionally goes out the window lol. The demolisher with krom heavy attacks and crossbow/spear chucking is the warriors way to paradise.

Oh and medium shield blocking then counter deals way more damage overall. You also get constantly hit by arrows from far away, so its nice to block them. And HP HP STAMINA FOOD... for melle (with a potion that gives you stamina over time) Must be mistland tier minimum as anything else and you will have a hard time blocking.

I've seen a lot of people talking them up but quite honestly they seem to fall short for me. The attack speed isn't that much faster than a sword, the damage isn't that much greater unless you hit full combos, the range is shorter, and you lose out on crucial blocks/parries. The only time they do some real work is if you pop bonemass and just face tank a mob of enemies while swanging. Additionally they do well if you're playing with friends and someone else has aggro. Sword and board + bow is still king for overall damage, survivability, and covering all situational use. You can make an argument that the spirit damage is useful in a real world situation due to the damage over time allows for damage to be done while you are out of range or dealing with alot of enemies. A war of attrition if you will. I'd also point out that time to kill isn't really all that useful of a test however besides spawning in an 'average amount and spread of mobs' on a beach multiple times and trying to take it with a variety of weapons and timing the time to pacify let's say with a damage taken and let's be balanced here. Pros and cons in difficulty or squeaky bum times I'm not sure how else a fair test could be made real world appropriate. My logic being ok charred are most common but is the addition of other mobs that realistically could be present going to alter the numbers and or ease significantly? I do realise that adding mobs that may not be weak to silver will decrease its value over all but this is counter balanced by the benefit of dealing damage over time on enemies not actively being attacked at that second, and the relative values of those competing factors I personally feel.would be interesting. I am however not capable of producing the tests

I agree. I would like to see kill times with, blocking, dodging, etc. I bet the DoT pulls significantly ahead
@Xendrasch
@Xendrasch Месяц назад
That argument would only make sense, if the spirit dot, together with its instant base dmg, would be significantly higher than the other weapons sole instant dmg. But that is not the case, for Mistwalker. E.g. if you have two weapons, one doing 150 instant dmg and the other doing 75 instant + 75 dot dmg, the full instant dmg is better under all circumstances, since the enemy just dies faster, and is no threat any more. E.g. if the enemy has 200 HP left, you in both cases have to hit him two times. With the instant weapon he would be out of the picture, immediately. The only effect the dot weapon would have, is that you have to wait a while, until he dies. Even a Silver Sword, doing 93 instant + 68 dot against creatures weak to spirit, would only do a total of 161 dmg, which is not much more than the Ashlands weapons instant dmg. For your argument to work, you would e.g. need a weapon that would do something like 80 instant and 120 dot dmg. But that does not exist.
@UnknownUsername131
@UnknownUsername131 Месяц назад
@Xendrasch what about a scenario where you're fighting multiple enemies? Let's say using the same math, you're fighting 3 enemies with 200 health, and you're unable to take a hit (low health, undergeared, whatever). While fighting, you can only swing once every ten seconds, then back to defensive fighting. A weapon that does 60 base damage and 20 dot damage, a single creature will die in 7seconds. (Within your defensive window) While you're right that smacking something twice with a higher base damage is quicker, I think there's value to be able to do constant damage when you're unable to sit and swing for the hills.
@Xendrasch
@Xendrasch Месяц назад
@@UnknownUsername131 You misunderstood how dot dmg in Valheim works: 20 dot dmg does not mean that you will take 20 dmg every second (or other time interval). It means that you will take a total of 20 dmg spread over a certain time interval. So in your example the enemy will never die, since he only takes 60 base instant dmg and 20 dmg over time, that totals to 80 dmg. Therefore dealing 80 instant dmg is always better. More exactly all spirit dmg is dealt in one sixth of the specified dmg, over a period of 3 second, ticking every 0.5 s, for 6 times (sometimes 7 because of a rounding error). Thus taking the example 20 spirit dmg, the target would take 3.33 dmg every 0.5 s, adding up to 20 dmg after the sixth tick at the 3 seconds mark. Then the dot stops. So dmg numbers on weapons are directly comparable, assuming no resistances or weaknesses on the target.

This video is quite misleading. You spent bigger portion of the video checking if Spirit damage type is worth it, but I don't see the Silver Sword anywhere. You use it just like you used Frostner, and let the DoTs tick. Mistwalker is 90% non-Spirit damage, and wailing at the enemy until it dies is not how you would use the Spirit damage type either. If you wanna compare kill times + 1 second difference matters + you include the new Ashlands content (you used a Flametal weapon), then I'm pretty sure the best weapon by far is Nidhögg the Thundering. Both in your test chamber, and in a real melee situation. The scene where you kite multiple warriors is silly. In a real scenario, you would jump up on the raised ground that's right next to you all the time, and kill them from the safe position. And you would use Staff of Embers because of its AoE damage.

I'm playing the ashlands right now and i gotta say i find all of this quite useless. Why? No one in their right mind should be using upgraded flametal sword (nidhogg) without the gem upgrades. Just use the mistwalker. so comparing the two is meaningless and pointless. ice staff is fine but its tiny dmg is kinda annoying and tedious plus you are slowed down too when shooting so... kiting for a long period of time is not an option. You need to nuke and get out. It's quite good vs vultures and valkyries. My advise is, test things for yourself and see what is best for your playstyle. When it comes to resources dont upgrade any regular flametal weapon. Wait till you get a gem and do it then. I suggest lighting sword. It obliterates things and mistwalker cant compete with the dmg output. get a shield upgrade b4 any armor. If you're a mage wand of the wild is absolutely broken and OP and i love it. Roots ftw.
@Xendrasch
@Xendrasch Месяц назад
Agreed. I also like to emphasize, that you not just should wait for just any gem, but exactly for an iolite (the blue gem) to get the lightning upgrade, that is much more powerful than the two other available gem upgrades, especially against most Ashlands creatures. The green gem, gives poison, that is useless against most Ashlands mobs, that are fully immune. The immobilization effect is nice, but not as powerful. The blood stone only works, when you lost significant HP, which is more a gimmick to try out, than a useful effect. Also if you want to trade a bit more risk, for a lot of power and fun, try out the Thundering Berserkir Axes.

misleading IMO. Also fighting the normal mobs are not that difficult for ANY build, magic or melee, the problem always lies with the starred enemies that hit like a truck. They almost one-shot me in ask armor, guess what that translates into using mage armor? Yes, I'm as good at dodging as anyone, but eventually, you will get hit no matter how good you are.
@BeezerGutlr
@BeezerGutlr 2 месяца назад
My friend and I played through the Ashlands on hard mode, both of us as caster builds. Everything had the potential to one shot us even twitchers and Marksman. I can tell you that after doing a melee only run of Ashlands, magic is by far and away the superior option, even in normal difficulty. Kiting in the Ashlands is actually optimal and if anything, holding your ground in one area is almost always a death sentence. Keep in mind, the guy who made this video wasn't rested when he was testing so obviously his Eitr regen is going to be low. Also it's not just about dodging, if you have feather cape, it's better to run and jump away from enemy attacks. Combine that all with the fact, that even if you have high armor, it's not really going to mean you live longer (due to movement speed penalties), therefor any build that focuses on being mobile in the Ashlands excels. That is why you see most people either using the Ask set or the Embla set, mainly because the movement penalties can be a deathtrap in the Ashlands. Just a side note, the Staff of Protection is really good and it shouldn't be viewed as something that makes you tanky. The Staff of Protection in my eyes, saves you from making mistakes and incurring consequences, because even though you have the bubble up, you are still going to want to have a mobile playstyle.

If you've got a skelly from your Raising the Dead staff (also bubbled) you can do significant damage while it distracts the Morgan. The skelly won't last long but it gives you a slight head start.
