This is actually the best video I've seen comparing Arc to other browsers. Until now, people have focused on "why Arc is good" instead of "why Arc is better." Not only that, but you've described the practices and reasons for why browsers do things and why they're built the way they are. Genuinely a video I'd recommend to people who I believe should take an interest in why they should care about their browsing experience. Great job Alex, this is a great video, love the detail and research.

Okay, this just made my day/week/month, so much appreciate the words of encouragement 🙏 AND for seeing the work and thought that went into this video. Thought about how we could make it different from what's already out there (which covers features great), but the "why Arc is better" is what got me to actually start paying attention. While most will go "it's not cross platform, screw that?" It got me thinking "wait, why is it not launching with cross platform, surely there was a lot of thought that went into this decision". And as I dug, the deeper I got, and the more I started actually seeing the vision they have and WHY it's different, and better. They are iterating and evolving so quickly for it. Never knew a web browser could do that, but it makes sense how they're able to do it 🤯, and I think the "risk" is starting to pay off for them. Your comment meant a lot to me/us, thank you 🙏

CMD + S = ♥️ Being able to hide/show the sidebar when you want more horizontal screen real estate (e.g. using side-by-side tabs, Figma, Webflow, or something of that sort), and then back to expanded mode when you're in browsing/single-focus mode definitely feels like the best of both worlds. And having all of that additional vertical screen real estate by not having anything in the top is 👌

Brave didn't copy vertical tabs from Arc. Vertical tabs have been a thing way before Arc existed with Firefox extensions, Edge, and Vivaldi.

Yes, vertical tabs have been around, but they copied the design nearly identically to Arc, releasing it in May 2023, right as Arc was starting to get some serious mainstream attention. Look at their launch post here, even the favorited icons at the top are the same implementation: brave.com/vertical-tabs/ It was most definitely inspired by Arc, timing and visually 🤷‍♂️

It's better than Chrome because Arc does a lot on the back-end to freeze tabs in the background if they aren't in use and even auto-archive tabs that aren't used for a set period of time. I've had much better memory usage with Arc than I've had with Chrome-it has been night and day.

I've had way better memory management than Chrome as they do some pretty solid tab freezing for background tabs, to not be using up your RAM unnecessarily. Battery life has also been good, probably because of the memory management side of things.

Why do you say that? It's my experience of the best browser having tried them all and this is my genuine opinionated experience. Would you have preferred that I had no opinion and was super objective about every single word that was said? Is that the only way it wouldn't be considered an "ad"? Sadly if that's the case, all the videos we produce are going to feel like "ads" to you because we're incredibly opinionated about what we recommend 🤷‍♂️

Interesting video. Safari was out before Chrome and in the beginning Chrome was build on Webkit till 2013.
@efficientapp
@efficientapp 9 месяцев назад
Thanks! And great context 🙏 Chrome was actually originally built by Darin Fisher after his original stint as an engineer at Netscape and then helping turn that into Firefox with Mozilla. He actually went to Google afterward and was like "I think we should be doing this too" and built an MVP for Chrome (on Webkit) and that's where they broke off like you said in 2013 to fully embrace Chromium at the core (which is essentially just a Google fork of Webkit, as Webkit is an open-source rendering engine built by Apple). What's so interesting and kinda exciting is that Darin actually left his 10+ years at Google and headed to Neeva (to combat Google search as a privacy alternative) and now he's at Arc Browser as an IC (individual contributor) actually writing code and building browsers again. So he's now made himself a part of each generation of browser being built. It's all super cool!

Your information about Webkit and the chrome engine isn't accurate. The chromium engine is a fork of Webkit, which was renamed to Blink. Blink was open-sourced and continued forward, with the reference implementation existing in the Chromium browser. That's what people are using for the basis of other browsers. But Apple didn't "choose not to use the Chrome engine." The Blink engine was a fork of Webkit. Apple continued developing Webkit and continues it today.

While we totally understand this concern, you're going to heavily limit what a browser is ultimately able to do without some form of login. Chrome uses Google Login, so people don't think much about it, but what a browser is able to do beyond just basic browsing is incredibly limited without being able to tie an actual account to it for storing and syncing of data between devices and desktop/mobile.

I'm on Windows and I use Edge because of the great text-to-speech it has and now because of the Copilot integration. And I've been experimenting with Arc beta on Windows for some time now, and it's nice but I don't see anything that Arc can't do that Edge can't, like the sidebar tabs and workspaces. So I still struggle fall in love with Arc.
@efficientapp
@efficientapp 3 месяца назад
Totally fair, I mean it's not just about what Arc can do vs what Edge can do, they are both browsers at the end of the day with the goal of being the operating system for which you view websites with. It's more in the micro opinionation and features that Arc has that makes it, in our eyes, different and impressive. Not sure how limited Arc is on Windows, but features like Peek have been so game changing on MacOS for us, and some of their AI features that allow us to shift + enter for it to bring us to the site it thinks without first going to Google. It's those micro interactions that make Arc really special in our eyes. But I get it totally.

I started using Arc but one thing that is bugging me is the archiving. I don't mind it archiving the tabs Im not using but it seems it's taking up more memory than Edge for example. Every time I close a tab it automatically archives instead of closing it. When comparing with edge, I opened 4 tabs on each. Edge is taking around 200MB where Arc takes 450MB. So that's a bit concerning to me
@efficientapp
@efficientapp 2 месяца назад
Interesting, you're sure about that with archiving when it's in the today view? e.g. pressing the "Clear All" button for example? Or are you referring to pinned tabs that you "close" out? Or potentially even favorited tabs? Archiving should definitely be closing it in the background, are you still seeing the tab as "open" in the background when you press say CTRL + Tab? As to clear things out I often press CTRL + Tab then CMD + W (to close), rinse and repeat. It sounds like Arc is focused more on tab performance though in the upcoming updates so maybe that'll help?

Cory's workaround for passwords was to use a proper password management + credit card autofill tool like efficient.link/r/dashlane - you can see a full write-up on the benefits of using a proper password manager here: efficient.app/apps/dashlane It's just if you're relying on Apple for your autofill and passwords, you're just locking yourself into Apple for everything, when Apple is not being friendly with making their software accessible on non-apple devices or outside of non-apple software. Using a 3rd-party password management solution means you actually have full control and ownership over your most critical information. If there's one area that you should be concerned about this it's for storage of the most important assets you have, your passwords and credit cards.

This video was more focused on Chrome vs Safari vs Arc Browser vs Brave, it wasn't covered in detail. Opera and Opera GX are both Chromium-based browsers though, that are built for cross-platform. So while Opera has definitely managed to stay relevant in the space with Opera GX (unlike that of Vivaldi it seems), still managing to hold ~3% of the browser market share is definitely impressive. They've been getting more traction lately especially with RU-vid gamers talking about them, but there's some privacy concerns with certain unnecessary calls happening in the background. All of that said, many of the standout features with GX, like the pop-out video mode, and color schemes are actually done much better in Arc for example. With all of that, we just didn't feel like focusing on Opera GX made sense for this video.

All browsers are really fast enough now so it only comes down to personal preference. But with that said if you care about the internet you probably shouldn't use a chromium based browser.
@efficientapp
@efficientapp 9 месяцев назад
Going to the extent of "if you care about the Internet, you shouldn't use Chromium based browsers"... Everyone worried about Google with Chromium, and yet no one acknowledges that all the core non-Chromium based browsers (Firefox/Safari) are making their money directly from Google paying them to be their default search engine. So Google has its fingers wrapped around Safari (WebKit) and Firefox (Quantum browser engine). One could even argue that Google is the company keeping the entire browser industry alive, with Chromium, and without Chromium (~$20bn goes to Apple from Google and ~$500m goes to Firefox from Google every year). So your comment is not as black and white as you're trying to make it out to be. Using Chromium at a core does NOT mean that you don't care about the internet. Google is enabling the Internet to exist in the way it does today. Heck, even this video, being hosted on RU-vid, for free, thanks to Google's ad network. It enables creators to invest a lot of time and money into content at no cost to the end user. There are huge ripple effects that come from Google's ad network and Chromium.

@@efficientapp I mean it's the objectively correct opinion if web standards is something one cares about. Even if you consider irrelevant facts such as default search engines. Given that I'm old enough to remember the pain of having to maintain two code bases because IE was atrocious, but everyone used it by default because they didn't know better or cared, web standards are important to me.
@efficientapp
@efficientapp 9 месяцев назад
Totally understand what you're saying, I'm the same as you on that front-in the video I even made a nod to web designers when talking about IE. That was my peak web development career and the first 40 lines of code was "load this JS if IE7, load this JS if IE9, this CSS if IE6", 40-50% of my time coding went into just accounting for workarounds. So the fact that most everything is on Chromium, all of those wasted hours aren't happening anymore, it's an amazing time to be a web developer, because you can actually use awesome technologies like flexbox with complete and full support. That said, and what I'm saying is, while we've been in a bit of an unknown re: some web standards, what aspects to web standards that Google is pushing back on most specifically worry you? Would be curious to know because believe me, I do get what you're saying here, I too am from the era you're describing.

So RAM being "eaten" isn't such a bad thing, it just means it's being used which improves the performance and caching in the browser. Whereas Chrome often has memory leaks, which is a bad thing. Arc seems to do a good balance of RAM usage though, especially for the tool that is used for 90% of the time on the computer, I'd like for it to use most of the RAM tbh.

You should talk why Ark is bad: 1. Very low on privacy. 2. It uses the Google spyware engine. 3. You need to register to be able to download. 4. It is another browser based on Chromium (Google has almost the monopoly on the browsers). 5. It is not Open Source project (totally proprietary).
@efficientapp
@efficientapp 2 месяца назад
You're being a bit cynical. 1. It's not low on privacy, they even prioritize privacy and have a core page on their site dedicated to it. 2. Chromium is what 90% of browsers use. 3. In order to sync your data you need an account, thus they require an email, makes sense, use a fake email if you don't like it. 4. It means that all your favorite Chrome extensions and everything else will work and migration is easy. 5. They have Open-Sourced much of their tech that has enabled Swift on Windows, and it's based on Chromium which is also Open-Sourced, so not exactly true. Fair to have your own opinion though.

I wouldn't say it's a crime... Linux users account for ~3% of total marketshare, so building for macOS and Windows actually covers 90%+ of all users. @frankbacon1002 I mean I'm one of those "Android nerds", and Arc is coming to Android, it's the next thing they are working on. Also while it sounds like porting from macOS to Linux is an easy one, Arc was built in Swift, not C++ like traditional browsers, so getting a Swift app to run on Linux is not any easier than getting it working on Windows. In-fact, they even built Arc such that their Windows app is actually built in Swift (not simply ported over), so they can focus on one code-base. They've even Open-Sourced some of the foundation of Swift on Windows, all of which makes sense because again, Windows is MUCH larger than Linux. Linux would just be a distraction right now. Android is not a distraction, it's actually what they are working on right now.

@@efficientapp i am eagerly awaiting the android release. Arc genuinely just seems so good, i have used all sorts of niche and weird browsers but this one genuinely seems like it will shake things up. And it already did, i mean vivaldi has had vertical tabs for a while but now it offers it as one of the default options, and the impact on even browsers like Chrome and Mozilla, the old guard, is undeniable since they have started borrowing some elements too. Honestly their strategy of designing a browser from the literal ground up is such a good one since the browser space has been pretty stagnant for quite a while, there are cool little open source projects here and there, i really liked bluemoon, i have a few more i want to try out as well, but yeah most of them are essentially native to linux which is why i kinda expected Arc to "just work" on linux too. I guess being made in Swift makes it an Apple native, and trying to run the windows version through wine was a failure. There are ways to get it working, like with anything on linux, but it's far too painful and I'd much rather wait for them to make the android version and then hopefully also port it to linux at some point. That being said I don't think Linux is a distraction, while Arc is very popular it's user base is mainly devs and creatives and while the windows move is likely smart, i think that a larger part of their audience actually uses linux. The windows market is huge but most of those users are businesses and casual users. I do think that a linux port would be smart for them, but it's probably way lower on the list of priorities than Android and I'm sure Windows just made more sense to start with. Either way I'm definitely hyped for the android release, it's been in the works for a while, I don't remember if they said something explicitly but I'm pretty sure I've heard somewhere that it should come by 2025

Best of all, it's built with the Chromium engine as the backbone, so all your favorite browser extensions will work right out of the box! -> at least some are capable of writing their own engine. Not you of course... Even though you claim it to be OH SO NATIVE 11. What clicked for me, is when someone explained the following to me: With Chrome, Google is in the business of ads, so they are actually incentivized to give you a crummy tab management experience. Why? Because what happens if finding the tab you're looking for is difficult? You open up a new tab and search Google again (and you're shown more ads). -> WHAT???? Just saying they have a crummy tab experience doesn't make it so. I LOVE the tabs of FF and Vivaldi. In Vivaldi you can even set a thousand options on how they behave. Ye well, if you wanna tell us that people who have no structure in their work better use your browser, then i guess that's it, but seriously, I've never ever searched a tab in my firefox or vivaldi, EVER. And i'm working with it daily as it's my job. i'm working mostly with keyboard shortcuts by the way.doubt i can easily go through the tabs in your browser though!
