Have you ever had a “goal weight”? Striving for an unrealistic weight can actually cause your set point weight, the weight your body WANTS to be at in order to function optimally, even higher. Dieting doesn’t work, we know that. But, it could actually be harmful and only push your body’s weight higher.
In this video I’m explaining what the set point weight theory is, why you should work to find your set point weight, and how to do just that! As always, this video is not to be taken as medical advice. If you have specific questions please talk with a registered dietitian 1:1.

As a recent Type 2 Diabetic...this information is amazing. I've lost weight without counting calories or macros. I've changed my mindless eating lifestyle to a more plant based out of nutritional needs. This works for me. No judgement for my partner who chooses to eat differently. I'm fuller, more energized, my sugars and numbers are all normal now. This works for me because I'm not counting, stressing and it's not a diet. I LOVE this video. Thank you. What my doctor says my goal weight should be isn't realistic. My body is much happier and so am I at 170 and I'm closer to that weight now, than I was 50lbs ago. Again, no counting, journaling, weighing...nada. You are spot on!

I lost my periods about 7 months ago, I was underweight and unhappy but had a body that society “acknowledged” to be a “good slim body”. I had my periods 4 days ago, I gained about 15kg and I’m truly happy to satisfy each craving. So my advice for someone who feels guilty of having a bar of chocolate and some pastry after the dinner: go and grab it, you want it and you got it. Listen to your body, it is smarter than you. It gave you hints that there is something wrong with it when periods stopped. Your brain is tricking you but you can change it. Be kind to yourself, never restrict yourself as it will keep pushing you back again and again. You are more than just a body Lots of love❤️

@@rameenkhalid6100 I’m so sorry for not answering you when you needed it the most😭 I hope you’re feeling much better now. What helped me is the “I’ll gain weight no matter what” kind of mindset. You just have to gain weight. And whenever I felt guilt for eating, I always remembered that I can loose so much more in life. For me it was the idea of raising kids someday in the future. And this is not possible with messed up periods. So I put my priorities first and let me tell you, weight, once your body is nourished enough, will settle down to the weight that works best for you. I’m sending you much love ❤️ you’re stronger than you think

Yep no scale , no counting calories or restriction last year I did Optavia and it screwed my body - mind set up with such low calorie and the restriction. I lost way too much weight. I was unhealthy so when I went off the optavia diet my body was basically starving which lead to binge eating and feeling shame watching the scale go back up . It’s been since November 2021 I started my journey to heal from diet culture Mentality . I find in my 50’s post menopause that flexible internment fasting helps me be mindful not eating late at night. I'm able to manage the side effects better now, but I feel like if I didn't restrict myself I would gain even more weight and any that I've lost since then. Unfortunately I have explored all options but I absolutely need this medication...I would love to let my body take over but I don't think it's capable of regulating on its own at this point.

This is interesting. The weight my body maintains effortlessly is 180. I eat healthy, eat intuitively, am very active. That is not where I feel healthy and good. I am 39 now and it is possible I raised my set point when I was young. The weight I feel best is 155 to 160. But I need to count calories to do that. Yet when I get there I think , but the bmi chart says I should be under 145. Then I get so frustrated that I can never get there. Look forward to listening to that book.

I am in your camp. I certainly could lose some weight, but I'm post menopausal and the weight just creeps up when your normal hormones just go away one day. I do recall when I was in my 30s, I got down to 145 and my periods stopped after a length of time training for a 15k run. Obviously, I was below my set point weight and didn't know it. I'll never see that number again, but as an older woman, I would be happy with something below the 200 mark as I'm at 215 right now. If I could get to 170 it would be marvelous, but she said to get rid of the scale. What to do? I'm also hypothryoroid and take medication for that. Maybe its a lost cause.

I have had an “all or nothing” mentality for years. By the grace of God, I have made so much progress since late 2019. I’m still on a journey - but this was a big win. The other day, I was on the treadmill, just getting in a few steps after my weight lifting. My fitness tracker said I was at 9 min 35 seconds. I felt like stopping. So I DID!!! In the past I would have felt compelled to hit the round 10 minute mark. This was somewhat big for me. Now, my question is - could I possibly workout without my tracker?? I’ve become so dependent on it - like using my GPS even when I know where I’m going. It’s such a mental hangup. I wonder if the goal would be to get rid of ALL of those measurement tools? (Body weight scale, food scale, fitness trackers, etc) I bet the answer is YES. Baby steps…

Something just thought of... Is stress a reason for weight gain because the body thinks it has to save up for when there isn't much food to go around? Historically many cultures have thought being a little bigger was better because it would get one through winter or an illness. We're actually the weird ones in wanting to be so thin all the time. Just a random thought from random person. 🤷‍♀️ Edit: Smoothie bags are excellent idea! Whole video has been helpful. Thanks 😊

've heard people talk a lot about the bodies 'set point' and how we have a range of around 5-20lbs that is where each individual body is healthiest. I have recently begun working out more and doing a bit of strength training, purely because it's something I enjoy and it's a good way for me and my partner to find more time to spend together. My question is this, if I lose fat but build muscle (as a by product of the added exercise, it isn't a hard and fast goal of mine as I do try to live intuitively) am I still at my set point? for example, if I weigh 160lb now and in 6 months I still weigh 160lb but my body has changed because that weight is now muscle instead of fat, is that still my set point? or will it then change? Hopefully someone in the comments can answer this!

Hi Colleen, i have a question for you! Roughly 5 months ago, I took up intermittent fasting, at first as a way to lose weight, but I kept it when I realised that I felt less bloated and tired throughout the day, and was able to feel happier and more energetic. However, I also had many food rules for myself, and deemed certain foods as 'bad', which badly impacted my mental health. I've found your channel, and I love the idea of intuitive eating, but I don't want to go back to eating in a normal food window, as I prefer the way my body feels during my current eating time. Do you think I can marry intuitive eating and intermittent fasting? Or should I only stick to one? Thanks for any help!

Hi, in my opinion if you feel good fasting, and not restricting yourself go for it. You can also intuitive eat during your eating hours. It’s all about balance and what feels good to your body, some people feel good while fasting and some people don’t. So do whatever is more healthy and enjoyable for you 😉.

This sounds great. What about if you've gained 20 pounds from medicine? I feel I want to control to get back to "normal" (which felt like my set point pre-third baby and pre-medicine).

...or from disease. My body weight was great until my thyroid crashed. Now I'm hungry ALL the time, like my body wants 3000 calories a day, but I'm pushing 200 pounds, (5'8") so I won't listen to my body's cravings because I know they aren't healthy. If I eat 1500 calories a day, I loose a tiny bit of weight, so I know my body isn't burning much more than that per day.

I feel like a lot of this comment section is kind of missing the point, and it took me a couple times of watching this video to understand it so I thought I would help. Especially since there are some negative comments toward Colleen which isn’t cool. Your “set point” weight is the weight your body is just supposed to....be. If you’re 160 lbs and 6 months ago before quarantine you were 130, that doesn’t mean 130 was your happier weight. You’re 160 lbs, and after a few days of eating good food and not having good anxiety you’re feeling amazing and at your best. BUT it’s only been a few days so you probably only lost a couple lbs, let’s say 155 lbs. 155 is your set weight because you’re feeling balanced and healthy. However, if 155 was NOT meant to be your set weight then your body will just naturally let it go because it knows it’s getting replenished and doesn’t need to hold onto anything. Your set weight can change over time. For instance, I’m over 250 lbs, but I’m feeling healthy, if 3 months from now I’m let’s say 220 and I’m feeling amazing then great! My new set weight. However, let’s say I lost 100 lbs, I might feel like GARBAGE at that weight because what do I know? I’ve never been at a healthy equilibrium with my body due to all the diets I’ve done. Hope this helps someone.

I heard many people say they started to eat way more after starting intuitive eating due to past restriction, that they are very hungry etc. And I have it other way round, I decided to only eat when I'm hungry but I rarely am. Before intuitive eating I ate 90% because of emotions (stress, boredom, sadness)/habits and 10% because of hunger. I often felt too full and certainly gained weight. Does the lack of hunger mean I'm above my set point weight? What am I supposed to do?

What about eating before bed? I’ve heard it’s had negative impacts towards starving in the morning. I have found myself a lot hungrier. I don’t know if it’s because of my lack of calories through the day or it’s just no good eating before bed.

i used to relate to overeating far past fullness, and being stuffed and thinking about food all the time. Now I still think about food all the time, but I don't eat enough. I'm not sure what my set point weight is. I have lost 21 pounds. But I'm still on the brink of being overweight. I want to look different, but also have a healthy relationship with food. It doesn't feel like I can have both...

I accidentally increased my set weight point I think! I've had horrible chronic gastritis for 4 years now and have been starving for the whole 4 years because of it. My weight initially dropped 70lbs in 3-4 months because of the lack of food. Now I'm putting on weight again and I cannot get rid of a single pound of it. I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out why I can't lose it. This might explain it!

I’m 8 months into my IE journey. I’ve relapsed to counting calories and weighing daily twice. But both times I’ve ditched it because I find counting calories encourages me to disconnect from my fullness cues. If I’ve logged it I eat the whole thing. When I step away from tracking I’m more likely to stop and not finish something g if I’m full and satisfied. 8 months in my bingeing has essentially stopped. I’ve gained about 10 pounds and holding steady there but I don’t think that’s my true set point weight. I don’t feel great at this weight. I think my main struggle 8 months in is truly finding my fullness cues. I don’t binge anymore which is a huge success, but I’m still eating past fullness.

Why is my body needing more food all of a sudden? I've been trying to eat intuitively but even when I'm physically full, my "mind" is still hungry and unsatisfied (if that makes sense).. I keep thinking about food too I tried slowing my eating pace and being more mindful, but I still need more food than I think I really do I also eat healthy most of the time so it isn't my body craving nutrients The only thing that changed recently is allowing all foods and accepting my body's size after years of trying to lose weight I don't understand 😅

This is true. I just posted a weight loss video that revolves around this topic. I think you can drop your setpoint 5 pounds when losing 10 lbs. then go off diet for 2 weeks. check set point and it will be 5 pounds lower. This seems to be a realistic result. Then return to diet for another 2 weeks. Continue till you get to your desired weight.

How does all this come into play when you have high blood sugar? That is where I am struggling with now-- after getting GD- and then Covid hit- I not only gained a lot of weight, but my sugar is now high... I want to eat intuitively, I also want my sugar in check - and I have toddler which makes it hard to ever sit and actually eat mindfully. I try- but I'm so busy with his meals - that I end up shoveling food in blindly...he stresses my eating out.

I'm really confused. I answered yes to almost every single question for both below and above set point weight. What does this mean? I suppress hunger, can't feel my hunger cues, am massively preoccupied with food, binge uncontrollably a lot at night way past fullness, restrict during the day, live off of coffee. I am the heaviest I have been in three years (I entered recovery 18 months ago), any more weight gain will destroy me. I can't do it. I'll end up as big as I was before the ED. And I didn't feel amazing then, I felt like cr*p. I can't go back to that.

I answered yes to some of each above and below, I know that's not a definitive answer. But I feel like this is my worst fear confirmed, (that I'm at my set point weight and it's not where I want to be) I don't under eat, I don't let myself get to the hangry point, I don't over eat, if I'm not hungry or almost hungry but it's dinner, I'll just skip dinner or maybe do a light dinner. I don't late night snack, I eat some junk, but not a lot and I like a lot of veggies, fruits, and protein. But I just stay at the same weight... so where does this leave me, fat and unhappy 🙁?

I think I now how to lose or gain but not maintain . Now I’m so sad and hate myself . Being obese is not healthy either but I’m afraid that if I go on a diet I will relapse . Mind you I am muslim so I do Ramadan but that doesn’t affect me because it’s for religious reason not for weight loss . So is there hope for me ? I don’t think that obesity is my set point for me .

I just had an epiphany 😭 I've been dieting since I was like 9-10 years old and I'm almost 20 now. I just realized when I go backpacking, usually 10+ days with no apps to track and intense exercise, I automatically intuitively eat and I always feel amazing! I feel like but the end I usually understand my hunger and fullness cues but then I go right back into dieting to "save" the feeling

This is me 100%. While hiking, backpacking, and camping, I eat truly intuitively, without thinking about food, without obsession, without blaming my body for feeling any certain way. When I come back to the city, all of that intuition turns back into researching a new diet or trend.

Great question! I believe the biggest impact is the continuous cycles of yo-yo dieting. I restricted for a very long time as well and was underweight. My body did gain some to get back to it's set point weight. Had I restricted again, then binged, then restricted I believe THAT is when the set weight heightens further. Does this make sense?

During pregnancy I loose like 30 lbs, because my appetite is very low then, and then after gain really quick to the 290's again, mostly cauz I get CRAZY sugar and carb cravings. Overall I'm pretty healthy, but should loose a few pounds to have a bit more energy etc... based on BMI I'm morbidly obese (5'8") , but I honestly think my set point weight should be around 250 ish, which would still be considered obese... but my whole family is larger build.
