You've easily saved me over a hundred pounds. Absolute legend. Bought one of these for 13 pounds and now gonna modify it to fit the ESAB A40 PAPR unit (face seal and air fed head gear) as they're supplied by my work
i have a hood with their pins and retention set up, i’m going to modify it so i can flip down the flip lens by nodding down like you have yours set up! thanks for the help G!
Hey Jake, I love your videos. I've watched them all. You inspired me to research the boilermaker's union as I'm currently a ship welder. Anyways, thanks for making videos. Please don't stop, you deserve the world man!
That's for watching I'm glad I could help! I've had some computer troubles but I'll hopefully be uploaded again soon. I've got a bunch of new content ready to upload since Ive started a rig welding company this year so stay tuned.
Nice! I came to this same conclusion to use this same hood with a flip latch respirator, auto shade lens, and headlamp on my own too! I guess great minds think alike! I put a Miller headgear I had in it so it clicks in place at the top, but I can still flick it down with my neck. I had no idea that flicking your neck could be bad so I'll have to try to do that mess. I love the idea about cutting the spring though- definitely going to try that right now 😂 Great video!
After trying out four different helmets I thought I finally settled on one that suit my budget, ergonomic and TIG capable. Picked up a pipeliner for chips and discovered after it uses standard consumables. And it doubles as grinding face shield. Awesome.
I use the same helmet going on 5 years. Beat the shit out of it and it still works. They were $12 when i bought it. A steal of a deal and well worth the investment. I also have a tigerhood now i purchased for $10 on marketplace its a bit beat up but its better than the cheap princess auto helmet. Way more comfortable more room for a respirator. Flip front is better quality. I just wont pay $100 for it tho.
Guy I work with came in today with a "Vires" welding mask - real cheapo auto-darkening mask on price. Chucked it at me to try. There may be nicer, better, cheaper masks out there, but I've not seen any. It's also super light. Tomorrow I will go buy one myself - the view out out of it is 300 dollar/quid - but it only costs 60.
Do you know where I can find that lid with the fibre metal hard hat gear? I can’t stand my tigerhood but I have to wear it when around hoisting, which is pretty much all the time when piledriving. But I’m trying to move away from auto lenses because my eyes and these helmets solve that when you modify the flip front and can run a fixed shade.
@@JTwelder. interesting, i just assumed i should. Any reason besides more room in the lens housing? Also, are you aware of any seller of these hoods that you know consistently has the fibre metal square holes?
@@brentcuaz7756 I don’t understand what you mean. I can assure you that mounting it below the flip is the best spot because it the flattest part of the shield and its easy to turn the light on and off when placed there.
I honestly have only used the air liquid and fiber metal fixed shade lenses. I’ve never tried the more expensive brands so I don’t really know what the premium ones are like.
I'd use 3M plastic moulding and emblem adhesive or probably just the foam tape version, since I have a huge roll kicking around and it's easier than screwing with a messy adhesive.
@@JTwelder. The tab that clicks into the hole, right? Also is there a decent fiber metal compatible headgear you've found that sets the hood further from the face? My respirator fits under a normal pipeliner but the flip hood sits like half an inch off my face
Question I’ve noticed in your videos you have had and or used both fibre metal hard hat adapters the “halo” adapter and the quick connect with your experience which would you recommend also do fibre metal adapters only work on fibre metal hard hats?
I absolutely hate the fibermetal quick connects! They're a horrible invention because the components wear out quite fast and your shield will start wobbling when you flip it up or down. Also when you have the quick connect cups in your shield there's no way to hang it up which is super annoying because working in the field your always looking for a place to hang your shield. The halo is awesome and I don't think it really works on any other hard hats but I've never tried, I always use it on a fibermetal hardhat.
@@JTwelder.the knobs that come with the fibre metal speedy loops are garbage, I ordered the aluminum knobs off Canada Welding Supply but my lid would always come down on me when I’m trying to do layout or what ever, solved that by using Locktite Blue 242 so it they never come loose but at the same time you can still twist them and make fine adjustments with the knobs.
Dude.. I bought this Helmet from princess auto none of my 2x4 autodarkening lense fit in it (with 2 protective lenses on outside and inside). How do you mod or deal with this issue? :(
More expensive shields do not make you any better welder ... more a sign of someone with lame welder ability. Leave the shields with $50 and up on the rack ... plenty of wonderful choices for under that. Get a low cost, light shield weight shield. Mod it however you see fit for you work environment and job at hand. Wear a balaclava and respirator ... weld on
I made the mistake of buying one of those outlaw leather style Tigerhoods but a cheaper version for $120. They look cool and I wanted a flip up helmet Well the flip up on the one I got didn't work well so I returned it and while I was waiting for the replacement I bought one of these helmets for 17 bucks. The damn thing has better headgear, is much lighter and it's 10 times easier to get the lenses in and out without scratching them up
Exactly man! Outlaws are basically purely for the look they don't really have any practical advantage over a regular helmet. These plastic ones are awesome!
If fibre metal made a pipe liner (sugar scoop) helmet with the same flip front as the tiger hood and called it “the boilermaker” they’d prob sell 200k of them in the first month.
