Thanks Jay. I’m a life long wine enjoyer and I’m learning a lot from you, Peter and Patrick. I’m 78 and I’ve consumed lots of inexpensive wine over the years. I need to try some more expensive wines. I can afford them now. Rick, WA state USA
A lot of sushi restaurants in Japan are embracing wines to pair with sushi. It’s fairly common to have sparkling wine and whites on hand and even reds for folks who ask for them. More delicate pinots pair well with lean tuna. Some chefs I’ve spoken to about wines vs sake say they prefer wines to serve with sushi as sake does not stand up to the acidity in the sushi rice very well. I agree and tend to go with champagne as the combination of the acid and carbonation help cleanse the palate before the next piece.
I love your vids, Jay. Apart from the very good information about the wines, they are always really enjoyable to watch. Your enthusiasm is infectious and your language skills are awesome.
The German Rieslings from Rheinhessen and Mosel, especially the 2018 Mönchhof Ürzig Würzgarten Kabinett Riesling from Rheinhessen and the 2017 Weingut Winter Dittelsheimer Kalkstein Trocken Riesling from Mosel are excellent wines to pair with Sashimi and Sushi.
Amazing, thanks for the video!! Love it that you included an Assyrtiko from Greece, having been born in Cyprus I have a soft spot for Greek wine, even though I don't drink it very often...Also loved the second part, Japan is my favorite country in the whole world!!
Really like your channel but it’s surprising you didn’t include German Riesling. It’s one of the great wines with sushi. Especially a spätlese trocken. Simply perfect
Thanks to youtubu and arrigato-san and some birru (the "birru" is actually a Vermentino from Tuscany) I am enjoying this episode very much. Keep up the good work!
My father likes white wine, so I've been looking at your channel for recommendations. I'll get him 2 or 3 of those depending on whether I can find them around here. Thanks o/
In defense of Loimer, the Lois bottling is entry-level, and should be drunk like they do in heurigens; that is to say, fresh. Your GV was from 2017. If you buy milk and keep it for three months, don't complain that the milk producer is bad! Global warming is having an impact on GV grapes, and they can be a bit broad. There are plenty of GVs which would be superb with sushi. Thanks for the tasting, and the assyrtiko tip!
It's funny that chirashi-don is so popular in Singapore instead. Would love to see a review of some Japanese wines, have always wondered about their quality, as well as so called "natural wines" from indie producers
Bara chirashi is not fancy enough (appearance wise) for many restaurants (esp in eastern japan because they feel they are more elite). Bits and pieces left from carving out the usual slices for sushi or sashimi, although fish quality is always good in japan. Western Japan restaurants may serve this more.
Drinking a quite dry Riesling from Alsace whilst watching this, perfect video for it. Trimbach 2016 if anyone is wondering, pretty good, nice and dry filled with plenty of petrol (:D). Sometimes I forget that you guys use the USD for pricing of wines and I sit there in amazement about how you guys have such an abundance of good cheap wines, then it hits me that your 27 dollar petit chablis is the equivelant of around $50 in Australia, yeah, definitely overpaid for that Petit chablis. I disagree with Peter's point that all true chablis' are better than petit chablis as I've tried some amazing petit's and some horrific chablis'. As for the whippersnipper comment, a whippersnipper is a motorized gardening tool used to trim up edges of lawns so they look nicer, the reason people use it to describe younger people is that it makes a lot of noise and can make a lot of unexpected mess.
I’ve noticed you list cost for these wines that you pay for. Why not list the retail price as well at the winery? Because total wine and Costco tends to sell wines well under their winery pricing.
