Thanks for the great demonstration of digital pens, the other day I was looking around Best Buy for a digital pen to write notes, but can also be used for sketching. There were several digital pens, but I did not know which would work best for both note-taking and sketching. After watching your demonstration, the selection is much easier. Thanks
I've always wondered what pen are compatible with the Lenovo. Thanks! BTW what happened to the screen hinge in your Lenovo? Are you still happy about it? I want to buy one as well!
I also had a problem with a Lenovo Flex 5 1570 (8th generation Intel i7) that when it went to sleep mode would not subsequently wake up through tapping a key etc. I would have to do a hard shut down with the power key to get back into Windows on reboot. After a lot of troubleshooting it was determined that the laptop had some bad hardware. I exchanged it for new replacement (same model laptop) and all now works well. I have also had good success with the Lenovo Active Pen 2 purchased separately from Lenovo - all the functions work including the top button.
Thanks for the review of various types of active pen. It would be good to test it like an actual user would use the pen and device, ie with the palm+wrist on the screen instead of either floating over or at the edge of the screen. Palm rejection testing is very crucial for usability of any stylus pen usage today.
Thanks. Perhaps I should have held it in portrait mode, but I always take my notes in landscape and my wrist was wresting on the device, not floating. It is just the camera angle making it look that way.
Thank you for your video!! However, I have a question about the compacity between Surface pen and HP envy convertible x360 ar0113au (2019). The laptop is supported by Window Ink but I am not sure. Also, if it is usable, can I customize buttons on the Surface pen using Window 10? Please help me!
Steven, you video is great. I have a question, however. I have a Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1 and have gone through 3 pens so far. I had a PN557W model pen and 2 PN579X model pens. With the PN557W, I was having trouble with the top button. That ended with the circuit board for that end on my table, out of my pen. Both of the PN579X pens ended up with nibs that ceased to function. The exact cause is not known. But, it might be contact with even the most minor of liquids (in my case, my wet hair after showering) (I did observe even the screen activating, possibly from contact with my wet hair). I am considering ordering the Wacom Bamboo Ink pen. Do you know if it works with Dell’s Latitude 5290 2-in-1? Do you know if it also has more resistance to liquids? I have been trying to get an answer; but, I have not found anything. I contacted Wacom and was told that it is incompatible. But, I do not know if it is incompatible or if it is simply not tested (as their chart of tested devices [their “compatibility” chart] lists the 5289 2-in-1, but not the 5290 2-in-1). My hunch is that, unless the AES technology is much more stringent than is EMR, I see no reason why it should not work. I have a Surface Pro 2 and I have gone through many pens across multiple manufacturers (Wacom inclusive) with that. I hope that you have tested the Bamboo Ink pen on the Latitude 5290 2-in-1 or know someone who has done testing with this configuration and can give an answer. Have a great day!
Hi Steven I know this video was made a few years ago but I was just wanting to know if you've had a chance to use the Lenovo active pen 2? And if so how'd that stack up against these pens,
Hi Amaad, I think mine is still their first one. I like it, it is comfortable to hold. I still prefer the bamboo ink because it has flat edges, bit like a pencil so your fingers don't slip and I can use it on any pen supported PC. The Yoga line up these days have their own integrated pen which remind me of the ones Samsung use on their Notes. Bit larger but still fiddly to use. Nowadays I use the Apple Pencil to take all my notes though.
Michael Aranda hi Michael, according to this article it uses a directstylus if a capacitive nature. I don't think the Bamboo ink I have will work but there are other version which may do if you go on their website www.google.com/amp/s/androidcommunity.com/nvidia-tegra-note-7s-directstylus-pen-brings-out-the-artist-in-you-20140512/amp/
The cool thing about tegra note 7,any stylus can work with it! You dont need pricey bamboos, get a fine point stylus from adonit or something and pressure still works like a charm! Its great for universal tech, the note 7 needs more credit
hey Steven, excellent video, thanks for sharing. got a question, i just purchased a Dell Inspiron 2in1 5378, and a bamboo Ink. but I haven't been able to make it work, or to find a useful reference.. just wondering if you have any recommendations, or if you could verify specifications if they are compatible.. thanks a lot!
Hey Carlos, thanks. Are you sure it is Windows Ink capable? You can switch between Wacom and Ntrig profiles on the pen by depressing both buttons on the side for a couple of seconds. Have you tried that? I looked on the Dell website and there is no mention of Windows Ink and there usually a sticker on the laptop that says it too.
OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy.. Hey Steven, so nice you are replying.. that's what I'm affraid of, that is not compatible, i dont see the windows ink stickers, even though the guy best buy assured me it would work. i managed to pair the device with my laptop, when I click/double click top button on the pen it does prompt the sticky notes app on the screen, but it won't write on it when i try. I did try to change the configuration as you mention by holding the buttons on the side, i see a tiny light flashing on the pen, but still no succcess. I also tried to download the driver update from Wacom website, but when installing i get medsage that 'no laptop device was found in the system'. I guess it won't work.. I really appreciate your time and response..
Useful video! Is that the 15" model of the Surface Book you're using? I'm looking at getting one but heard the Bamboo Ink only works on the 13" model (The new Surface Pen doesn't have an eraser on the side button which is crucial for graphic design, so looking at alternatives)
Thanks, glad you liked it ! Doesn't the top of the new Surface Pen not function as the eraser? Yes, it was the new 15" Surface Book, GTX 1060. The Bamboo Ink pen does work on it...it can switch profiles so is the most versatile pen to have in my books.
The new surface pen does have an eraser at the top, but it's not as accurate as using the pen nib (plus having to flip it around and re-grip) is a little annoying. Really good to know about the bamboo ink - it was getting to be a deal breaker with buying a SB2 15" - thanks for the info!
Marwood Marwood any time ! Good point about the eraser end. I have been sent another pen to review that works on the SB2 , costs $35. I I like it. Once I get these next two laptops out the way i will review it
It is confusing. The surface line use Windows Pen Protocol so Wacom AES pens won't work, and I believe the HP Active stylus is Wacom h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Is-the-HP-Active-Stylus-Wacom-compatible-with-x360-13-u062na/td-p/6444009
I bought this laptop for primarily note taking and pen support. But it is horrible for that. Coming from 3 years on a Lenovo laptop, never realised truly how good the pen was (Active pen 1). If the pen support matters to you, I strongly suggest against buying it. The activation of pen requires way too much pressure which for me it means when I write too fast, it misses a lot of the strokes. I'm in the process of returning it now and looking at something like the ideapad C340 or a Microsoft Surface.
Please I have Lenovo yoga 530 and am using active pen 1 and all of a sudden it started to work for 10 to 15 minutes and the stop working for 5 minutes and reconnects again without doing any this The performance is not stable and I updated all the drivers if you can help me how to solve it it will be highly appreciated
Firstly, thanks for the video. I've been struggling for some days now, since companies don't clear that out. I have a Dell Inspiron 5378 2in1 (WIN10) and the information I got from the seller is that it only takes passive pens. Well, the Bamboo ink does have Bluetooth connection. Will it work on my 2 in 1? Do you guys have any tips on how to find out whether my notebook accepts this or that? Cheer from Brazil =)
Hi Andre, thanks for watching my video. According to Dell it uses the Dell Active Pen PN 338M www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-13-5000-2-in-1/spd/inspiron-13-5379-2-in-1-laptop Not sure what protocol it uses but if you didn't want to buy that pen the Bamboo Ink is a good option as it can switch between the two protocols :) Greetings from the USA !
exklim Tech News So here's the thing. I've checked some of the comments of this products and they are pretty negative. The main reason why it's so low is because "it doesn't work with my laptop". Some people say it works on some 5000 series and it doesn't on orthers. That's odd
You refer to the bamboo ink or the Dell pen I mentioned? If it is the former perhaps you should play it safe and go for the Dell pen but for the life of me I don't know why it wouldn't work..
Apparently it has something to do with the screen of the laptop. What I don't understand is how some people were able to have it working and others not. I've read someone saying that it is because of the type of the screen Dell used for the Inspiron 5000 series. I am not sure a company would produce different features for the same serie, it just doesn't add up.
It does seem strange - a closer look at the panel discriptions on the models it does say "support Pen Facial" on some of them. I have no idea what Pen Facial is - apart from perhaps you can log in using the pen perhaps?
Can you check the bammbo pen one chinese tablet? Like chuwi Corebook? Sensitivity is determined by the pen or computer? I have 1024 pen do you think bambo well work with 4096?
I bought the latest Surface Pen. I have a Lenovo Yoga 730. I connected the Pen with the Laptop but the Pen does not work. Do you have a tutorial to solve this problem? I hope so. Thanks
The Surface Pen uses a different protocol. It uses Windows Pen Protocol whilst Lenovo uses Wacom AES so I'm afraid it will not work. The best option is that Bamboo Ink Pen as it can switch protocols and it feels great in the hand too.
Sagar Uchiha hi there, no, it won't work I'm afraid. You need an Ntrig pen for that. Eg Asus pen, bamboo ink, surface pen. I think the bamboo ink pen is great at you have the flexibility between Wacom and Ntrig .
I don't think so, I tested them the other way around. Capacitive pens on a windows ink laptop ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UbPTpo5Amrk.html
Can someone help me hmm does the bamboo ink stylus work for the original surface pro ?? If not, can someone recommend me a stylus that works with it. please
I suspect it uses Ntrig like the Spectre. My advise would be to get the Bamboo Ink pen as you can switch profiles on it - one for Ntrig and one for Wacom..
In my opinion the best pen to get is the Bamboo ink because it can be used for all windows ink devices. If you change device you don't need to change the pen
@@OWNORDISOWN Thanks for your reply, is bamboo pen good for drawing because my main purpose is for drawing. How's the lenovo active pen 2, will it work on acer nitro 5 spin?
@@shubhkumar2199 it's as good as the others, although it doesn't have tilt support like the surface pen. If I recall the Lenovo Pen uses Wacom AES, not sure if that is what the Acer Spin 5 supports.
@@shubhkumar2199 I'm more of a note taker to be honest. I know Lisa at Mobiletechreview is an artist and has reviewed a few pens, she might be able to recommend something. The only one I know that has tilt support is the Surface Pen
Jason Li the cheapest ones are about $50 but the Bamboo Ink is great because it can switch between Wacom AES and Windows Pen Protocol, so if you switch laptop you need to buy a pen. You'll find that more and more manufacturers are now selling the pens separately..
our company also issued new surface pen for Microsoft surface, only sales $35, I think someone will need it. could you help to make review for our product, thanks
Bamboo is not at all diverse, if it works on windows, it’s only for windows, if it works on iPad, it’s only on iPad, and so on and so fourth, for the others, just read through their descriptions or contact the seller
@@docdj4065 I recently reviewed the HP Envy x 360 and the surface pen worked on that. So both the HP pan and surface pen use WPP. Here is that video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zHFcRpGlCGw.html
I've read a number of reviews and there is no mention of it having a digitized screen. This video shows some one using a capacitive stylus ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XfxFGk7hayA.html
I probably should have included it but I already had 2 Surface pens plus the Huawei and bamboo I bought. I didn't really want to spend a total of $200+ on this review and have even more pens kicking around. I have to watch where my money goes, I am sure you understand that.
OWNorDISOWN...I may have hinted before about reviewing the EVGA SC 15...but, while you're at it maybe ask for a review unit for this one too? Just a thought.
Michael Aranda I still need to get a contact at EVGA. I'll have to work at that. I just got a new job after getting laid off so I'm pounding the phones trying to get customers at the moment (I'm on commission).. I will work on it though.
OWNorDISOWN...no problem. I hate asking again. I am aware you are fresh out of work and trying to get a job going again. Hopefully you steal even more clients from your old job for your benefit and at the expense of your old boss. Until next time...I enjoy the videos, and value your opinion-- hence me asking about reviewing the EVGA SC-15.
Michael Aranda thanks Michael. Yes, I have been in my new job 1 week and drove 15 hours last week visiting customers. I am doing my best to take as much business away as I can 😁. I ordered a refurbished MSI GP72VR gtx 1070 to review. Plan on selling it afterwards. Perhaps I can but the EVGA cheap somewhere. I'll look.
Only one with a digitizer screen, otherwise you have to use a capacitive stylus. This video may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UbPTpo5Amrk.html
When you say "jitter" are you referring to when the pen input doesnt respond? In my experience , unless I am trying to use a capacitive stylus on a windows ink device, that is more due to the panel itself. For example the Asus Zenbook flip 14 was prone to that with the same pens. If I had encountered anything like that in this test I would have mentioned it. Perhaps you mean something else?
@@OWNORDISOWN Hi! Thx for responding, nop I didn't mean that, if I search for "jitter active pen" in RU-vid u will find it, I think it's the main issue with this technology, once u are making precise artworks u find that this problem makes the quality of ur work worst or not necessarily worst but more difficult to achieve the best results, the tablets of wacom the best ones and some pcs doesn't have it or have it very light while others have a lot, I'm getting crazy to find a good machine or good tests that show this problem, u find itself buying a 2000 laptop having this issue and it's crazy
@@pedroalber6066 ah, I understand. Sorry for not doing that test perse. I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination . I am a note taker. From comments I just read Wacom seems the best. A good test would be the bamboo ink pen as you can switch between that and WPP. That would rule out the pen, but communication with the screen itself. If I do any tests in the future I will make sure to do the jitter test 👍
I find that the Bamboo and Surface pen work the best. The Surface pen does feel better in the hand. But the Bamboo is good as it can switch profiles which is useful if you change laptops regularly.
I suspect not. The Yoga Pen is Wacom AES. My HP Envy 360 uses Windows Pen Protocol like the Surface Pen. I recommend the bamboo ink pen as it can switch between the two..
