I put a lot of thought and effort into a pvc bow and I love it! I made a straight bundle bow out of fiberglass road markers inside a 3/4 inch pipe. "V" cut the ends about 8 inches down and close it and apply the recurve. The rods stop right at the beginning of the curve. This bow shoots smooth and quick! I discovered that 3/4 inch pipe is way more efficient than 1inch. It's 25% less mass after all. I don't have the kind of shop/ tools/ experience that you do. You could make a bow like that way better than I did. I'd love to see you do it!

Sorry I missed the stream. I will put my 50 cent here. First a wooden dowl is very dangerous to use as an arrow! The grain is unmatched and will break. The best backing is cinew. It increases the speed dramatically. In my years of bow building, the fastest wood has been a cinew backed juniper. The hardest wood is the west coastal Black oak. But Kramer, I've always wanted to ask, have you learned flintnapping yet? That will change your perspective on mankind and survival. I will also warn you building accurate, tough arrows is much more complicated than building a bow. Keep up the good work my friend. I'm glad to finally see another young bowyer. Sincerely ryley kreger aka the feathered frotiersman.

Love your enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment making bows You add an extra bit of motivation by spending time on materials lying around the shop or the nearest building supply. Stressing hard to get materials for an "ultimate" build would only serve to discourage new bow hunters from starting that first bow. You have started my wheels spinning and I am thinking about cutting up some clear pine I already have to make a laminated bow using fiberglass tape and epoxy as a bow backing. Thanks for the spark.

In Ojibwe, which is an indigenous language from North America (aka Turtle Island), the word for hickory trees is “mitigwaabaakoog” which somewhat translates to “living bow staves”. It’s fascinating how useful cultural and survival knowledge can be encoded into something as ubiquitous as language.

Hey there!! Thanks for all the great content! I stumbled upon your vids after having too much fun chasing my kids around with my 6 y/o Disney Tangled Toy Bow and Suction Cup Arrows. I had to get something real (not to chase the kids with, of course). So, here we are, my first poplar bow with the fiberglass tape/wood glue backing and nearing the end of the tillering process. I'm seeing the set in already at about 35lbs @ 23" draw. I'm trying for about 40lbs at 27" draw. Wondered if heat treating the belly to try and harden it a bit but I don't know if it'll mess with the wood glue bond on the back.

BIG LOVE FROM THE HIGHLANDS! You are a Godsend throughout Lockdown, your videos have pushed me back into making Bows. My 4 year old son makes the Arrows. Subscribed and think you deserve the world for your attitude, attention to your channel etc First Rawhide backed ( Dog bone ) Flatbow was made thanks to you. Somehow now need to chase the ring on small diameter whitewood. I'd pay for that video!!! Like should you keep it round on the back and Natural Or go through the rings for a flat back and back with hide? To give you that rectangle shape? It's a 4 inch stave.. ( Ash) Can anybody on here give a bit of insight? I'd be very grateful. Bowers Bible is not too illustrated.. Once again, big love from the Highlands. A wee bit stuck!

Hey man I just discovered you, you’re AWESOME!!! I’m going to be converting my basement into a Bowery and use your videos to help me make an ARMY of bows for my family and I. Have some questions though, can 5/50 cord be used as a bow string? I need help making the arrow rest for my bow, do you have an in depth tutorial for this? I know it’s a crucial part of the bow and I don’t wanna screw up. I just don’t know nor understand how it’s supposed to be shaped? Keep up the good work man, you’re awesome
@micahprice2807
@micahprice2807 4 года назад
Joseph Parks from experience I can say 5-50 WILL make a bow string. Ran it as emergency backup on my 45# bear recurve till I got a proper string. But its heavy, gives a slow cast, and stretches badly (at first) so take that into account. Long story short, it will WORK, but it’s not a preferred choice. The bow will “vibrate” noticeably more than with a proper string as well.

I would go with the woods used on the respective regional design such as yew or juniper on a short west coast paddle bow, or black locust on a Cherokee longbow, etc. Check out Energetic Heritic's sinew backed reaction wood pine bows.

Re: "Splitting" and flattening a PVC pipe to use as a bow backing, and you said it might be too thick. PVC pipe can be found in various wall thicknesses. It would just be a matter of choosing the wall thickness that would result in a backing as thin (or close to it) as you like.

Ash and hickory have excellent memory. Therefore are frequently used for tool handles and baseball bats. Not so good for steam bending because the excellent memory will slap you up beside your head when it slips out of the jig. Hurts really bad and leaves big welts.

Willow wood I made my first bow as a kid it was just a stick now I'm getting in to it more I am now having a short a making one properly out of Australian black wood rose I found a beautiful piece that has a dead core this is a beautiful piece of hard durable? Flexible lightweight wood. Very similar to the Irish blackthorn that has the ability to keep on cracking from the littlest crack due to changing of temperatures. However, if there is no cracks in the wood to begin with, it remains uncracked unlike me LOL I was wondering if you have any advice?

Kramer, just ran across a chart showing 100 exotic hardwoods and their "janka" hardness rating. The higher the number, the harder the wood.There are still a lot of hard woods not represented in this chart. I got a big ole black walnut in my back yard that I bet would make a good bow. I've also got cherry which I thought would be pretty hard but it's janka number is only 960 :-( Will

@jameshaulenbeek5931

Plywood is likely to delaminate. Typically, the filler plys will have large voids and imperfections (knots, cracks, splits) which don't compromise the board for its normal intended use, but would if you tried to make a bow. However, laminating thin pieces of good quality wood would make a very strong, resilient material.
