My first teacher called it "Captain Pinky". No bs. Loose hands still need to be in control. Pinky is almost the anchor if you will. IMO. And I am now learning how important it is to be able to count and subdivide 1 through 8 in the beat. Which may have been quarters. Not sure... counting and subdividing is crucial. But finger control is the point. Beatdown Brown is a great teacher.

Hi Rob. My name is David Schroeder. I Stumbled across your videos. I played drums just myself as a teen. Wish I'd stayed with it all these yrs. I love bluegrass which mostly has no drums. I bought a banjo, & just didn't pick it up. My love for drums got me searching for a kit again at 60-yrs old. Seen a Yamaha Custom Stage kit for sale & started to look for vids on how they sound when I came across you tuning a base drum. Started following your vids and love your exercise ones. Took my 12 yr old grandson to C.A. House of music & got us both practice pads & sticks. Practicing my singles & doubles & hand control. So much info that I never had 40-yrs ago. Thank you for what you do. Gotta sell my banjo b4 I get a kit, but it will happen. Gonna help get my grandson a kit if he shows interest, but I plan on continuing to encouraging him. I've shared your vids to him so he can practice also on his phone. Thanks again for what you do. May GOD bless you!

I definitely struggled a little going from 4 and doing the 5's...and the same with the 7's, but I just followed you and kinda got it (with a little fumble here and there). It was all about trying to count off 5 and/or 7 (especially trying to stay inside the click). It was never about the speed though. 4, 6 and 8 we're relatively easy. I'd rather not skip fives and sevens if they're valuable. I'll keep it going and see if they stick. Good exercise though. Thanks!
@mftc82
@mftc82 6 лет назад
I struggled with this too at 1st, but then I started to count the 5s as "1,2,1,2,3' and the 7s as '1,2,1,2,1,2,3' and found it more manageable than trying to count the whole way up. Its almost as if concentrating on counting the actual numbers throws you off the timing. Try it out, it may work for you too :)

It's also fun to start with a 2-note group, but flam the last stroke of each group into the accent of the next group. Then you get alternating flams, then flam taps, then a flammed triplet, etc as you add strokes to the groupings. So you can develop clean flams in addition to the other benefits of this exercise.

Don't get the use of metronome for awkward groupings. For example on 5. It changes the position of accent. But what is the logic. Meaning it moves 16th notes and sometimes not on click signal. When you change the grouping? To land on 1 or what? What is the logic?
@williamsass9434
@williamsass9434 5 лет назад
I tend to use the word "sev" in place of seven when counting that particular grouping or 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 and also count the 8's as two groups of 4 (ie. 1 e & a 2 e & a or 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 ) just to help with accuracy. What are your thoughts on this?

As long as your form is tight, you can go a size or two heavier if you want. Otherwise the extra weight would be pointless and counterproductive. Much like loading up a barbell to squat heavy without making sure you can perform a proper squat first.

Shinobi-gun Kinobe don't do heavy sticks. Play with the sticks you play with. Heavy sticks are a good idea once you've mastered the exercises but until then just play with whatever size stick you're comfortable with. Cheers and domo ari gato.
