Wow. This was incredibly helpful. Thank you so much! I was diagnosed with osteoporosis last week, despite being an avid fitness nut and eating healthy (I'm 52) - I didn't have a fracture but because osteoporosis is in my family, I asked my GP for a DEXA scan. Now it's important for me to know which exercises I have to start avoiding.

Hi, just wanted to share my experience: in September 2021 my DEXA scan showed osteoporosis, but consultation was just now in February 2022. They advised to take alendronate, and avoid the intensive ashtanga yoga that I'd been doing seriously since around September. I had serious side effects from taking a single pill of alendronate, to the point that I couldn't work the day after I took it. Luckily I thought of my smart scale, which registered my bone mass. So I could show that since September, thanks to ashtanga, I had increased bone mass from 2.8 to 2.9kg. After I mailed that, my doctor agreed with me that I should discontinue the alendronate, and continue my intensive ashtanga. 🙂

This was excellent, thank you! Such good information! Bone building exercises and a plant based diet have been absolutely key for me to build bone. I had multiple fragility fractures in my spine at age 34. I did not qualify for kyphoplasty because my bones weren't strong enough. I'm very glad to hear that exercise is better than that procedure.

Thank you for this podcast. Just a small correction, Joseph Pilates started developing his technique, during world war two,while he was in a prisoner camp in the UK ( as officially, he was German), helping the doctors at the hospital. I studied Authentic Pilates under Romana Krizanovska, Joseph Pilates's helper, Sari Santo, Philippe Taupin and Inelia, all Authentic Pilates teachers. Authentic Pilates lost the trademark in 2000, while I was in NY, just like Aspirin. ( Bayer lost the trademark). It is a system of exercises that have the objective of strengthening the "power house", increase body awareness and control, develop fluidity in movement, concentration and breathing. The best thing is to have a personal trainer like Dr Sherry Betz,who knows different modalities of exercise, not only Pilates or Yoga, for different clients of different ages and capacities.

I am a pilates addict, and have been looking for information about how pilates fits in my bone health plan. Thank you! One thing I have been trying to find out is whether or not jumping on a mini-trampoline is helpful, as that is an activity I really enjoy, and can do.

Thank you for mentioning having Osteoporsis & spinal stenosis. I went to PT 11 sessions for left back nearer to hip bone pain. 1st told muscle then said arthritis even tho I had MRI & xrays first. I manage with a nagging pain. I do all excercise gave me. Looking for more progress. Will look into your website.

Thank you for this interview, it was very encouraging. I’m wondering if you could comment on what seem to be a difference between this interview in the interview by Dr. Lora G (sorry, I can’t spell her last name but it ended in Gregorio). Dr. Laura made it sound like it was very difficult to build bone and last one was doing exercises that seemed significantly different than the ones in this video. It seemed like the loading was much more substantial. Can you comment on the differences? Thank you! Again, thank you for your great work.

I’m 72 and have had an accident and broke my left femur, wrist and elbow. I now have a rod in my femur attached with screws, a plate in wrist also attached with screws. They chose not to operate on my elbow siting surgery would have caused more scaring. Before this happened I’d been diagnosed with osteoporosis and had 5 compression fractures in the spine. Also had arthritis in the lower back. What/ how to strengthen my bones as I’ve declined Prolia and other chemical prescriptions. I have been taking D3 K2 and zinc.

Thanks for such great information. Is there a link to the handouts she showed on the exercises to do for osteoporosis? She showed 3 or 4 handouts and it was a little hard to see during the presentation. Thanks!

I have asked this question of yoga instructors and have never gotten an answer. I used to do yoga until I got a Morton's Neuroma underneath my left foot making it painful to do any exercise barefoot, especially yoga. Can I do yoga with something supportive on my feet, particularly something with padding?

I have hypermobile ankles. Ruptured anterior tibial tendon left. Orthopedic hard brace on left and soft bracing on R. Is it possible to do standing yoga with braces?

Too bad that the video is presented so badly. Yes she did cover a lot of important information but why were there two screens. Should have showed only her so we could see her presentation clearly. We don’t need to see Kevin’s face throughout the presentation! What’s more important?
