*Corrections: 1) I refer to Z790 having a better memory "controller" but that term is incorrect. Z790 improvements are to trace/topology/shielding. 2) The ASRock Riptide Z690M has 2 M.2 slots, not 1. 3) Removed ITX recommendation due to an issue with that board, alternate linked in description.* What Motherboard features do you look for in a board? Tell your story in a new comment!

You put MSI z690 pro in ddr4 budget list but You've only discussed ddr5 version in the video. Is it the same deal or is something different about it? Also is there a much difference between MSI z690 pro ddr4 and Gigabyte Gaming X Z690 DDR4 if they were the same price?

This is coming from someone who has been on this platform for a WHILE at this point,I had an i9-12900ks and now an i9-13900k and Raptor lake is still on the 1700 socket/the Z790 uses the 1700 socket as well, this is just something that needs to be thought about/talked about. The real issue is,I think AMD is falling behind, YES they have 3D CPUs and MUCH better optimization, but their JUST getting DDR5 RAM and their JUST catching up at the end of a generation/the Meteor Lake platform/1851 socket,MAY come out SOON/the i9-14900ks, will most likely be released on the meteor lake platform/1851 socket. I think this is something people NEED to be thinking about, IF your planning on investing in Raptor Lake/Z790 boards/the meteor lake platform/the 1851 socket MAY be right around the corner,if you ALREADY own an alder lake board/an i9-12900k/ks,go ahead and get an i9-13900k,I don't think thats a bad idea, but investing in Alder Lake/Raptor Lake, this late in its life cycle, isn't necessarily a great idea/again most likely the i9-14900ks,will not be on Raptor Lake/the 1,700 socket and it will be on the meteor lake platform/the 1851 socket. To put this in prospective and I know this isn't the entire story/power/pin count isn't everything, but it does mean A LOT,more pins equals more power and more surface area, surface area allows for more cores and more pins allow you to power those cores/you won't have as many power restraints, this isn't the whole picture, but this is DEFINITELY something to think about, Kaby Lake, which came out in 2016 had 1,151 pins and AM4,that came out in 2016 had 1,331 pins,Alder Lake/Raptor Lake have 1,700 pins, AM5 has 1,718 pins and Meteor Lake has 1,851 pins, like I said pin count doesn't mean everything and it MAY be something AMD can work through with optimization, time will tell, but this is something that NEEDs to be brought up/at least looked at/observed.

I intended to buy an Asus Maximus Z790 Hero, but now, given their recent quality-control failures, I'm not so sure anymore. I want 96 GB of memory for creative applications, preferably at a high speed, so I'm looking at G.Skill's set at 6400 MHz & CL32, but not many Z790 ATX motherboards support this combination of capacity and speed. If I avoid Asus boards, my choice seems to be either MSI Carbon/Edge/Tomahawk or the Asrock Riptide; apparently no Gigabyte board supports 6400 MHz CL32 at 96 GB currently. I'm willing to pay a couple hundred bucks extra for added reliability, since I can't afford to have the motherboard fry any of the components, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much data on failure rates. I wish there were more statistics on this so consumers could make a more informed decision.

From what I assume you want to partner a ultra fast ddr5 ram with the build, then definitely go with a z790 mobo is more stable, if you like MSI I would recommend z790 carbon. Force is kind of in a weird place, it's more expensive than edge but has less feature than a meg board like ace or unify. If you want white cosmetics, strix-a or m14 formula are better choice. Other than that 13900k not a great overclock cpu, but if you definitely want supreme overclock I think maximus hero is better.

I'm going for 1440p gaming mostly but I do plan on playing some more open world/sim games in the future. I have a budget of about $1200. Do you think going the AMD route with either the 5600X(5700X if I go with a slightly cheaper motherboard) or an Intel 12th gen would be the better option? I don't care about overclocking. I'm leaning slightly to an AMD system because the b550 boards just seem to have everything I need with good audio for cheaper than the Intel boards. Just wanted to get your take on it.

5600X is roughly on par with the 12600K in gaming with slightly cheaper motherboards (though as you can see, Z690 has gotten much cheaper). For tighter budgets I'd go 5600X (or even just the 5600 to save money) and throw the savings into a faster GPU. Good luck on the build!

Great video. Checked out reviews for 13th gen, and I think that Intel has reached a bit of a crossroads for their CPUs. Despite large boosts in core count in 13th gen thanks to the extra E cores, Intel could not always best AMD in multithreading, especially vs R9 7950X. Notable are workloads that benefit from AVX512, which Intel does not support because the E core architecture doesn't support those instructions, and AMD took wins in said workloads. So simply throwing more E cores at the multithreading problem is not always the best solution. Clearly hybrid processors must be designed carefully, with the right balance of P and E cores, as well as make sure the two core designs support all the same instructions. (AMD actually teased this when they revealed Zen4, as the mentioned Zen4c, a E-core-esque version of Zen4 that still supports all of the same instructions, clearly a shot at Intel)

both take trades, but intel other offerings just blowed AMD out of the water, especially in pricing, the 13600k being a 320usd chip beating the 7700x in MT workloads by quite a margin, and the 13700k getting close or par to the 7900x while being quite noticeable cheaper and much easier to cool than the i9 13900k, and thats without tunning. hybrid processors are the way in all honestly, especially with shrinking nodes, apple and intel are in the trend, and amd will hop in later just like intel is implementing 3D chips on meteor lake.

After spending an exhausting amount of time over the past few days scouring the net, I think it's important to stay updated with the Z690 and 13th gen situation. Even boards with flashback are having issues getting 13th gen working, even after that there are issues with boot drives being accessed, which can be by a gruelling process of updating the ME drivers using SATA. Even after that there are still XMP issues where sticks will not clock to their rated levels and other sporadic reports of sound issues like random popping or intermittent crackling. Within hours of this post Gigabyte is also removing 13th gen combability with their BIOS for some of their mobos, whether this is temporary or not time will tell. The majority of people experiencing these issues are getting fed up and opting to send back their Z690s for Z790s. BIOS firmwares right now are spotty, sit on your hands with dysfunctional components for a week or two hoping for a fix for some issues whilst likely introducing new ones. At the end of the day a lot of this aggravation can be avoided by dropping another £100-£200 for the Z790, which is disgusting but predicable. The same might be said for opting for DDR5 now instead of DDR4. I was intent on doing the former but after days of researching and still new posts come in on subreddits and forums every other hour. Two courses of action now are wait for late December to see where things are regarding these issues, cutting close to the usual black friday/cyber monday purchase period. Or buy into the more reliable but vastly more expensive and stable Z790 DDR5 solution. This has to be said, as peachy as content creators and reviewers are making the 'cheap and cheerful Z690 DD4 alternative' out to be, and it's a nice idea I'd love to buy into, there are many issues they either glaze over or don't know about. This is not a critique of your content by the way, which I happen to think is really good, but I wish I had this disclaimer somewhere along the way.

Quick story I've just did kind of the same situation with updating the BIOS. I had a z590 motherboard with a 11th gen chip. Even the z590 needs to be updated before it will even post. I went through every bios on MSI website it wasn't until my third motherboard that I actually get anything to post. I spent about 12 days with each motherboard trying different variables and different biases and nothing happened. I called him SI and they said that this happens a lot and there's nothing to be done except sending the motherboard back. We don't always have the option of sending a motherboards back though so. It's just something to think about

I am a novice so feel free to correct me if I am mistaken, but from what I gather CPU integrated graphics are not necessary if you have a GPU in your system that functions on that level. It is said that although GPU’s can be stacked and “crossfired” (used in tandem) that GPU’s and CPU’s cannot be crossfired together.💁‍♂️ Meaning that if you have a suitable GPU for gaming that you can definitely “save” with a “cheaper” F model CPU.

Great commentary on audio codec quality. Quick question. How do you identify the audio codec chipset if the motherboard specs just say "Realtek Audio CODEC". Going for a 13600k or 12600K on Gigabyte GA-Z690 Gaming X DDR4. I don't play that much and use my pc mainly with Lightroom (I'm a professional photographer). Intel z690 won the battle over AMD side due to the support of Multiple Nvme (I pan to use at least 3 of the for working purposes). The performance of the new cpus and the use of the Nvme drives, surely will boost my workflow (atm i'm running a i7-7700). Productivity build on a budget.

The Z790 seems a little superfluous as far as I can make out, perhaps for DDR5 users it makes more sense? For gaming though DDR4 and a better GPU is still the best option. I chose the MSI Z690 EDGE DDR4 for my build, predominantly for aesthetics, my system was a refresh and I replaced the CPU/MOBO/GPU with updated versions of the components I used last time around (although I went with the Edge rather than the Carbon mobo) People complained about GPU price rises but I was shocked by mobo price increases, a Z690 carbon being nearly double the price of the Z390 carbon. The 13600k is a real joy to use and is probably overkill for my gaming only rig.

For the audio portion, I used mobo audio for quite a while, but a few years ago I went back to using a dedicated SoundBlaster Z with the external headphone amp and a pair of Beyerdynamics DT 990 Pro (250 ohm) headphones. Not just for gaming, but also quality music listening sessions (M4A, FLAC, and CD's) and I'll never go back to onboard mobo audio again.

Hi PC Builder - Considering getting the ASUS PRIME Z790-A. Do you know if the light blue audio jack (normally line in rear panel) can be reconfigured as "Rear Speakers" in a 5.1 setup. According to the manual it says to use the pink front panel but that would be inconvenient - but in the manual for the Z790-P it says the light blue jack CAN be used for rear speakers, but for the Z790-A- it's different...

Do you anticipate the higher or mid tier Z790 MoBo prices dropping or remaining consistent for the foreseeable future? I'm getting ready to build a PC...Basing it around a I7-13700K with DDR5 memory. One of my main concerns now, I originally was thinking about an ASUS product, but, now...they seem to be getting a lot of flak for substandard materials/service. Anyways. I need a high quality Z790 motherboard (DDR5/4 X M.2 slots) and hoping the prices drop in the near future. All the best. Cheers.

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding something, but I would like a clarification. If I have a mid level DDR5 memory, for example 6200Mhz CL36 DDR5; And hypothetically putting them on the same "model" motherboard such as Strix Z690-F and Strix Z790-F, will I theoretically get a better performance with Z790? Or does this only apply to high end memory with speed rating above the marketed max Z690 memory? (6400mhz in this case)

Thanks for the video. But just to confirm, in order to update the bios on a z690 board to use the new processors, I need an older alder lake processor, right? If you don't have one of those it might not be worth it over just getting a z790. Also, I've noticed that most of the GB motherboards seem to not have the analog audio outputs to run my old (but still good) 5.1 speakers.
