Beta64 - A Link to the Past / Zelda 3

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past helped form the Zelda series into what we know and love today. The addition of breakable walls and new attacks have been kept in the series for over 20 years thanks to this game. But A Link to the Past wasn't meant to be for the SNES at first. Instead, the game was actually planned to be the third Zelda title for the NES.
Enjoy!

It's interesting that almost every single zelda mechanic started with Link to The Past. That's a solid pedigree.
@warioland523

The game could be considered a prototype to Ocarina of Time in a way. Many of the aspects from this game were carried over to Ocarina. You could even say the jumping between present and future could be comparable between going from the Light and Dark Worlds in this game. Also Kakariko still carried over to Ocarina of Time as the largest town area in the game though Link To The Past had a happier version of the town I think. Ocarina of Time's Kakariko does appear to be happy but then you go to places in the village like the Graveyard, the Royal Family's Tomb, The Bottom of The Well/Kakariko Well, and of course the Shadow Temple itself. There is also 3 other graves. One has a heart piece, the other has the Hylian Shield, and the third one has you racing the ghost of Dampe because in the second half of the game he becomes a ghost for some reason. The abundance of horror themed enemies in the Kakariko region as a whole was probably enough to scare kids away from the game for weeks.

Aside from the breakable walls. While they weren't obvious, there were still breakable walls in the original Legend of Zelda game on the NES.

@@Densiozo I think Ocarina did towns better, and gave Link a far more personal quest. Though I found Link to the Past to be far more mature and cutthroat. Events like Blind the Bandit taking the body of a maiden, until made to stand in the light of day, the Flute Kid cursed to never know his homeland as he rots in the underworld as a hollow tree, the sacrifice of the maidens one by one by a sociopathic sorceror, handed the blade and shield by your only known guardian as he dies in a cold wet ditch during a storm, escorting the princess through the catacombs with her own temple guards after your blood, the execution of a priest who guarded a princess in your stead, his final breath a desperate plea for you to save her life, and being the first being to traverse a world of darkness as a being of light really carried a lot of weight with me.

That's so cool that we got one of the most iconic Zelda moves, the spin attack, just because of development limitations. Frankly, I'm glad; the spin attack is way cooler than a diagonal slice.

I also wonder if ti's why Link's attack improved. In the original Zelda, he stabbed it forward like a dagger, and could only hit what was directly in front of him. The SNES slash goes through the diagonal.
@NordicAndNerdy

ZipplyZane I would imagine it was also the limitations of the NES that caused them to give Link a stab, animating a full slash would have taken much more.

Great episode, learned a couple things! Just a clarification: the hidden/cracked wall sounds are still in the game. Most materials in the game produce different sounds when being walked into with the sword drawn, including cracked walls/doors/etc.
@urdnal
@urdnal 8 лет назад
2:20 The visible cracks weren't chosen _instead_ of hollow sounds, they were added _in addition to_ hollow sounds. You can still tap the walls by holding the attack button and pressing d in the direction of a wall.

The Triforce Saga is might be referring to the earlier Game Boy Zelda games; "Oracle of Ages" which focuses on Nayru, and "Oracle of Seasons" which focuses on Din. Both these games came out in 2001. The Zelda III hoax came out in 2005, so it probably tried to cash in on the idea of faking a "beta" of the Oracle game series. There was suppose to be a third Oracle game that more focused on Farore, but was cut.

Again great video. But I was watching it again and I do feel compelled to point out a few mistakes I overlooked during my initial viewing. 2:07 Breakable walls can still be tapped by Link's sword in the released version of the game. By charging the a Spin Attack and holding it, then walking up to a wall Link is facing, he will begin to tap it with his sword, and Breakable Walls do indeed make different sounds. You made it sound as though the feature wasn't implemented. Though granted the visible cracks did make it near useless, there are a few parts were it helps out. 10:09 Silicon Knight did not create Metal Gear. They created *a Metal Gear*, more specifically the Gamecube remake of Metal Gear Solid called The Twin Snakes.

Another thing that sprang to mind about the "Beta" Zelda 3 cartridge is, why would Nintendo put the beta on a 72-Pin Nintendo cartridge as opposed to a 60-Pin Famicom cartridge?

I can't believe you missed the biggest thing. Compare the betas again, the perspectives are different. They were either using a bigger tile set or had it zoomed in. If you look close and count the tiles you will see the tile number counts are the same, and the tiles look bigger. I don't even think they were capable of having a zoom feature. That tileset might of been 18x18 pixels instead of the 16x16 in the final version
@clayzulah
@clayzulah 8 лет назад
+PersistentPixels The beta images are taken from magazine scans and have likely been cropped/enlarged. It'd be highly, highly irregular for a game from this era not to divide its graphics data by sets of 8/16/32/etc. pixels.

The first time I played the game was the Japanese Super Famicom version on my Super Famicom I had bought with a voltage converter. The game was really difficult because it was hard to figure out what to do next because the text was in Japanese but I struggled through it. When it came out here in English I had finished the Japanese version many times so I knew everything to do. I remember they had a demo cart at a Captron Nintendo video game store before the game was officially released and I played the game there and the employees and gamers watching me couldn't believe how good I was at the game. They thought I was playing it for the first time and marveled at me being able to figure out where to go and what to do next so fast. They didn't know I had already completed the Japanese Super Famicom version dozens of times. I had a lot of fun impressing everyone at how good at the game I was. I did the same thing with Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger. Completed the Japanese Super Famicom version before the game was released here. There was a Japanese toy store in downtown Los Angeles and I went there and bought all the Super Famicom RPG's before they came out here.

The skull statues were technically used. Using the free movement glitch that lets you walk outside the map in a dungeon, allowing you to get to pretty much any room in the game, there's at least one room that has the skull statues. The room itself just isn't used anywhere, but it is technically in the game still, and you can get to it with the glitch. Not a big difference to what you said, but it's not technically unused. They just didn't put any doors that lead to that room anywhere in the game.

I just realised why people are hyping it up so much. It had a story, a huge map, two huge maps in fact, loads of items, good music and more. What I didn't get is that although plenty of other Zelda games live up to this standard it was the first to do it all, it revolutionized the series. It is the game that left Zelda II in the dust.

Speaking of A Link Between Worlds, I went through the whole game, without picking up any chainmail, and without upgrading the Master Sword even one bit.

You can see the skull stone in the final game, but you need to do the exploration glitch.

Pretty sure breakable walls appeared in the original. You had to use bombs in that game, so do you mean walls you can break by the run dash move?
@SageJFox

Think he meant breakable walls with the visible cracks. Original Zelda didn't show anything special for them.

I wish they had left some bombable walls unmarked in ALttP. Mark some, but leave some as secrets to find.

2:07 WHAT I thought you needed bombs!? Also, the hollow wall sound is still in the game.

Just to make one thing clear, Silicon Knights didn't make Metal Gear Solid. They made the GameCube remake of one of them, though. Great episode, by the way.

Also, the Beta versions look a LOT better than the finals -- why weren't they used?? The soldiers looked much nicer, and Link looked more like his 8-bit roots -- brown shield and all. Not to mention the scenery looked a lot more natural, like the Master Sword's meadow looks like it's a little worn, and that nobody's been up there for quite some time.

It must be awesome to have a room immortalized with your name in such a successful franchise as Zelda, plus one of the best title of said franchise. Wish I had bought Nintendo Power since the very beginning... :( oh well...

3:21 Actually the limit of binary combinations on an 8 bit variable is 256. The values are 0 - 255. 0 is the first value. 2^8 = 256.

What? The Chris Houlihan room is accessible without using glitches. There are plenty of videos out there on how to get it. It's basically just loading your save file in the Sanctuary and getting really fast to the hole at the right side of Hyrule Castle, where you jump at the beginning of the game to get your sword and shield. ...that may be a glitch though, but I don't really think it is.

Please do a Beta64 episode on the beta of Wario World (GC) i remember seeing allot if not all the E3 or beta shots of this game back in a E3 2002 article of Nintendo Power and EGM, but i know nothing of its early development cycle and wanted to request an episode to see if footage, unused audio/untracks, gameplay mechanics, unused enemies/unused bosses unused stages or if it had origins on the Nintendo 64 i just want to know if this game had anything behind its creation to final product if its worth an episode covering its beta, also great videos i enjoy them allot and keep kicking ass - Dan "The Face"

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but which SNES Zelda beta cartridge is fake? One of those looks like it was used in Nintendo of America's in-house game "library". NP once wrote they kept at least one copy of every licensed game as a reference copy for employees, such as Game Play Counselors.

I am honestly rather displeased with this video. You spend way too much time just stroking the game's ego and talking about how great and revolutionary it was. When you finally actually started talking about the differences int he beta versions, you skip a number of very noticeable details, including changed artwork and consequently reshaped layouts. When you talk about the unused content, you missed pieces, like the invisible enemy in desert. And to top it all of, you just make several inaccurate statements. Claiming Silicon Knights made Metal Gear, mispronouncing "rupees," Okay they they are minute details and unimportant overall, but for a video that is supposed to be scouring for minute details from a game, getting those details wrong makes you sound unqualified for the video you are making. And while it is honestly not really your fault, I am displeased at the general shortage of information you had to present in this video. I wanted to see more; I was hoping for more in-depth reveals about core designs and the whole process of developing the game. I can't really fault you because I have no idea how you could get that information, but nonetheless I am still saddened that you could not put more into the video.

Some shots of the beta had a lot less detail of Link and looser, sloppier looking sprites. Surprised they din't mention that.

I disliked this comment because we as Zelda fans can all agreed that A Link To The Past is awesome, so I can’t blame him that he gushed over it and accidentally missing some stuff. He might do a reboot.
