Here's updated instructions for installing the Betaflight Lua script to your OpenTX radio (Taranis X9D, QX7, Horus X10, X12). This video improves on my original one:
1. The Betaflight Lua script got easier to install, but the instructions changed so the original video doesn't work.
2. The original video didn't use the easiest way of updating the firmware.
3. The new Betaflight Lua script not working. It has an "out of memory" error when used with OpenTX 2.2.1. I'll show you how to fix that.

You can quickly run BF lua. Only change filename from luac to lua.

Joshua, thanks for this video, but what could be the reason that there is no information showing for the PID or VTX inside the lua script? It just has "--" for all the fields. I'm running a Hobbywing XROTOR F4 FC and have an X4Rsb rx with the s.port wired to UART3TX and a Tramp HV with the telemetry wired to UART6TX. I also have both turned on within Betaflight.

Hey JB. I found that only ticking the luac option (not lua) during the build removes the need to specifically run the bf.luac script from the taranis SD slot. Script works as before with a long press of page on the model screen. Any side effects to this approach?

I followed this video to the letter but when I go into the sd card on the my taranis x9d plus se and go into the BF file then select bf.luac then execute it I get this message "script syntax error /BF/bf.luac incompatabible precompiled chunk" Anyone have any ideas how to correct this please ?

Is this relevant yet? Or it has .already merged into new versions, as im using latest 2.3.14 otx version..so o just need to force start the script with .LuaC files..and not with simple .lua file? to eleminate out of memory errors? I ve read others suggest to delete these luac files as they are not necessary and by deleting them i can free up some space. So im confused now..here you suggest to force start with luac. Im facing memory issue now when i start elrsv2.lua than i cannot start another script...or vice versa

I have a X9D (not plus) and a QX7, both running OpenTX2.2.1. I tried lua v1.0.1 scripts on 2 quads (both with SPRF3 FC, one is a modded wizard x220 and the other a scratch build with a bangood SPRF3 clone from banggood). Both quads have telemetry working fine. But only the wizard works with lua script (initially bound to my QX7). They're now wired exactly the same (softport sport telemetry with only one cable on tx softserial 2 and both with sbus). At first I thought the problem was with de X9D, but after binding the quad that doens't work with lua to the QX7 (that has lua working perfectly with the wizard), it still doesn't work. So I reckon the problem is with the quad. Any hints on how to try to solve it? I am at a loss... tried everything I can think of... I don't get any memory errors. The script just can't read e.g. the pids from this particular quad, with any Tx, even the QX7 that I know works fine with the wizard. Thanks P.S. Oh, and I have luac enabled on both TXs, but use the "telemetry page 1" with bf lua script.

Sometimes I get 'Script syntax error; telemetry protocol not supported' message. But it just sometimes. I tried to switching models and goes through all the LUA pages but cannot make it appear again. *0*

Question: I have Smart Audio controlling vtx...no issues. I installed lua scripts and it controls everything on the vtx EXCEPT PitMode. The equipment is working, so is there a special way to turn PitMode on/off? The screen says it is saving but the vtx never changes and the lua PitMode setting goes back to whatever it was set at? Telemetry is definitely working. Equipment: fireworks v2 flashed to 3.5.1 and BF 3.5, 9D+ radio with 2.2.3, eachine tx805. Any help is greatly appreciated. Roger

They got rid of the luac option. If you enable lua, then luac is included.

When executing "Write Firmware to Radio" (5:00), to what path do you write the firmware? Do you write it directly to the "Taranis (J:)" drive?

None of the above. When you "write firmware to radio" you have the radio connected in DFU mode so there is no J drive. You plug in the taranis with power off and this causes it to enter DFU mode.

I habe finally figured this out.. thanks but i still have a problem when i connect my taranis to the computer do i have to do the hold trims to center.. like if i wanted to flash the next firmware.. how woulf i do it now.. just turn the radio on and plug usb in and choose mass storagemm because i cannot access my sd card when its plugged in usb. I have to remove it. Also i flashed 2.2.1 again and it said flashing done but an error sayong failed to flash FIRMWARE.BIN file.. please help

You don't execute the .luac file. Just run the bf.lua file.

Hey guys. Just tried to update my taranis x9d+. I followed this video and the previous taranis update videos (thank you for them). I have succeeded in getting the taranis to 2.2.1 and the bootloader as well, however I had to do the old 3 finger shuffle method rather than just plugging in and flashing like the video showed. If I do that I get this message Executable /Users/JRapson/Downloads/dfu-util-0.7_0.7-1~precise_amd64.deb not found I reinstalled dfu util on my Mac but still not joy. Also I can't get BF or KISS lua/luac without a syntax error Script Syntax error loadscript("/SCRIPTS/BF/protocols.lua","btFile not fo Anyone able to help please?

If you get syntax error, then I would make sure the latest version of the script is downloaded and installed in the right folder.

Simple solution to run LUAC in telemetry pages, little hack :) 1. Delete BF.LUA from BF folder on SD 2. Change name BF.LUAC to BF.LUA and thats it, if You have BF.LUA defined in telemetry pages, now it's automatliky run LUAC witch diferent filename.

Do you know if the current Frsky OpenTx version (With, I'm guessing, some bugfix?) has the LUA + LUAC options? It is a compile-time option so I assume it is available yes. Just select luac option in Companion and click "download" and it should come down.

They don't seem to offer a custom companion, only the firmware and SD card content. So I used the 2.2.1 companion with their "2.2.2" version, but I can't tell which modules are active, unless there is a menu for it on OpenTX? (I'm just starting out, sorry for the confusion!) My current understanding/guess is that 2.2.1 is linked to some repository where it gets all the precompiled build options/modules, and somehow combine thems? And thus, I'm not sure I can click download in 2.2.1 and tell him to fetch 2.2.2 (I clicked "write firmware to radio" and picked the file I got from FrSky) considering FrSky doesn't seem to be giving any other content. Unless the companion is actually extracting modules from the firmware .bin? :)

Thanks once again Joshua. This was difficult for me because my PC had a hard time recognizing my sd card and taranis. sometimes drives showed up but unresponsive. I only just purchased my radio second hand and it didnt come with a usb cord. I kept trying on different usb ports and tried a second usb cable that fit but still no luck. Was about to give up and tried my first cord one more time and the drives appeared, looked correct and the firmware flashed finally!! Yay! Never would have done this without you champ, thanks heaps!

You should be able to run the .lua file I think. Manually executing the .luac file is not necessary.

I have the new lua and I'm on the qx7. I do not get the low memory warning or syntax error. Betaflight works everytime without that luac. I only get the low memory warning for the inav lua, and syntax error for lua pilot. Go to your folder that has the x7 x9d, and horus labeled folders. Delete the folders that are not for your transmitter. Only delete the other transmitter named folders. Then the page shortcut works without memory error

It's easy to fix in more proper way, making long press on "Page" still working. You just need to DISABLE "lua" before flashing, and only leave "luac". After flashing, set the screen back to "None", and then to "Script" again, and choose the "bf" script again (you need to be sure all the ".luac" files are there, in most recent version of script archive they are there by default). All will be OK after that, long press on "Page" will work, and no memory error - because the firmware will use "luac" files instead of "lua"...

Joshua, I originally had the memory error until I followed your guide. However, my "hold page" seems fixed without needing to execute the bf. luac manually through the SD menu. Are you sure the hold-page script isn't already working for you too?

Personally I would use the method of "plug in while it's off" and flash from Companion. The only reason I showed the SD-card method is because it avoids the issue with DFU drivers, which many struggle with.

Hi, thank you for your video! After flashing Taranis with LUA and LUAC ticked, you just have to delete the bf.lua file in the BF Folder, and its works perfectly. No need to launch bf.luac manually anymore before Use.

For anyone getting "Syntax Error" or random lua errors... try a better SD Card. I had received a new Taranis X9D Plus and all my issues went away with a new card.

If you go to the GitHub LUA page, you can get more recent commits that allow you to change the vtx frequency by frequency, instead of messing around with bands and channels in case you know the frequency by number. And also, the long-press page to quick access menu works on my QX7 ;)

hey josh, when you say the taranis upgrade is needed for crossfire, you mean the micro crossfire not the full blown crossfire unit. so i have been informed by the retailer

This info is a bit dated. The x9d has been shipping with support for Crossfire for a while now. However at the tune the video was made you definitely did need to upgrade for crossfire support. If my memory is correct crossfire support was added in 2.2.0. Before that, whatever module you used, opentx didn't support crossfire at all.

Ironically I dealt with this exact same problem last night while doing all this.... Ironically though the way I solved it is because originally it didn't have the BF folder in it... So my work around was remove the BF folder.... It solved my problem without changing anything in what I had to flash to my controller.... But I am new so I'm not sure what's in the BF folder that I may want to keep I may need to reinstall that into my SD card.... And then of course update my firmware to match with the new Lua C

Yes overwrite. You're not really overwriting any files, just dropping folders into them.

Mr. Bardwell, after updating the Tarranis X9D+ firmware and the SD card contents, upon starting my unit I receive a message: "SD CARD WARNING Expected version: 2.2V0013 Press any key" After pressing the any key, the transmitter seems to function correctly. What can be done to satisfy my Tx?

I tried this and it bricked my radio. I suspect my folder structure was wrong or corrupted. To fix it I did 3 things. 1.) re-ran the ImpulseRC driver fixer 2.) re-unzipped the sdcard-taranis-x9-2.2V0013 file and put it on the SD card 3.) put the firmware .bin file on the SD card this time in the firmware folder and flashed it using the radio instead of OpenTX companion. It said my EEPROM wasn't right though, but it tried to fix itself and seems to be OK.

You should always be able to flash the radio in DFU mode, which you access by plugging in the radio with the radio powered down, then run the IRC Driver Fixer. But ultimately whatever works...

The firmware from the FrSky home page is not OpenTX, it is FrSky's customized build of OpenTX. You should use the firmware downloaded from Companion.

With OpenTX 2.2.1, you have to select USB Mass Storage or Game Controller from the model setup menu. Or you can have it prompt you each time you plug in

So, this memory error you speak of, it only happens when you page around inside the script for a while when running it from a telemetry screen from a long press of Page button? (This is my first foray into the LUA script stuff.) For the sake of exploration and whatnot: First, I edited the x9pre.lua file and put the VTX page on top, as it is probably the only thing I am likely to use it for, and it allows me to see what channel I am on from the radio, instead of searching with the goggles, obviously... Next, I added Script, bf to the telemetry screen 2, to get it to open on the long page button press, and it comes up just fine. So, will the out of memory error pop up if I leave it on the screen? or only if I page through the script a whole bunch? Would it help if I removed some of the pages from the x9pre.lua file? (like the rx page) And to further confuse things... I haven't actually been able to find this infamous out of memory error...

I went through this video 3 times, and i'm still getting that SD CARD WARNING thing. Why? I'm even flashing 2.2.2 now.

You have to download the updated SD card contents that match the version of the firmware on your FC. You can find the contents here: downloads.open-tx.org/2.2/release/sdcard/ Delete the contents of your SD card then replace it with the files from there.

Thanks Josh this was a quick easy video for taranis open TX. I was running 2.2.0 and forever! Just flashed it to 2.2.1 following ur video went perfect. I don't use lua but I still glad I finally put the newest FW!

I would like to upgrade to 2.2.1 but for the Q-X7 they made it even more annoying to turn on and off. I now have to hold the power button for 2-3 sec to turn on and even longer than before to turn off. If there is a way to change this that would be great!

I did the update on my Taranis Q X7 to 2.2.1, but when I run the bf.luac script, all the values are blank on all the pages. I am using an FRSky R-XSR receiver on a CL-Racing F4S FC. The smart audio is working via the OSD. I also have telemetry data in the Taranis. Any idea why I am not seeing any data in the bf.lua script?

I figured it out, finally! On the CL-Racing F4S FC, the telemetry accepts the inverted (regular) S.Port signal. You do not have to use the uninverted S.Port pad on the R-XSR. Then I had to make sure in BF CLI that telemetry inverted was set to OFF and telemetry half duplex was also turned off. In BF CLI type these commands: set tlm_inverted = OFF set tlm_halfduplex = OFF save That's what did the trick for me to finally get the BF LUA scripts working.

First time Frsky user here wuth a Qx7. Flashed OpenTX 2.2.1, added Lua script together with all files instructed on the video. I'm wondering why don't i have the VFAS option on the display page? All i get is the screen 1 to 4 menu without the top display menu. i wanted to select it also on the special function but can't see the option.What did i do wrong?

If you don't see VFAS on the display page I think the sensor has never been discovered. Bind the transmitter, power up your quad, go to Telemetry screen then Discover Sensors. If the FC is sending telemetry you should see VFAS come in.

hey Joshua, I need a little help with some trouble shooting, I followed you instructions in this video and now my Taranis Qx7 disconnects from receiver after just 1min I don't know if it is the receiver(new build which I flashed with the Fport firmware) or the fact that I updated the firmware on my TX should I try reflashing my Tx or my RX or both?? Thanks

Nice video, but 2 glitches: - both .lua and .luac have been contained in the .zip package, therefore dragged&dropped onto the Taranis - I tried deleting all the .lua's on the Taranis, only leaving the .luac's onboard. No more memory shortage warnings since!

I've never been able to read or write with companion. It SAYS it writes firmware but doesn't. It also says it reads models and settings from radio but only model 1 shows ... i always have to write firmware and backup to\from SD on radio. Any ideas?

it is weird. Does it on every PC i connect this qx7 to. Ive went back and forth with frsky and the betaflight guys to no avail. They just stopped responding after exhausting possible solutions. There are zero errors and companion says everything went fine. I know its not the case but it acts like companion is interacting with a second version of the firmware/settings that never get loaded in the Tx when booted. its a mystery.

Hey Joshua I've been trying to update firmware on taranis x9d plus believe its 223 now. But when I go to crossfire in sd card its saying script killed any help would be great

I did both had them both working then something happened nd only 5 things are on sd card now. Nd now the computer is trying to repair sd card but no luck

ok so I was getting a bunch of syntax errors if I tried to execute the files in the BF folder. I changed the luac file name to lua. Now when I hold the Page button down to activate it....it seems to be working. Why would I be getting the Syntax errors when going through the execute steps? Also, so if I want the PID changeing screens to show up last I should use the UI.lua file, but change the name to " BF.lua " correct?

The thing you say about renaming UI.lua to BF.lua is not correct. You need to edit UI.lua as shown in the video, not rename it. IDK why you're getting syntax errors when you run the one script but not the compiled version.

The same error you received when executing the luiC on your horris, is the syntax error I receive, but I know I checked lui, and luic when I flashed. will try again ...maybe I missed something.

Thankyou Joshua, I have been following you since I bought a Taranis 9 plus SE back in August this year. Mine came with 2.2.2 and everything uploaded sweet for the LAU scripts, including the Amber sound pac. I have yet to get a build up and running but I’m working on a 220mm quad. I want to run it “slow” at first to get used to it. Getting back in the hobby after many decades of other bits of life getting in the way. I enjoy your persistence and explanations. This digital stuff is so different to my early 26Mhz 2 channel glider of the 60s. Keep up the fantastic how to’s and I will get onto the patron page soon. Thanks again from NZ.

Every time I drag and merge the bf and script files onto my sd card it shows fine when the sd is in my computer but when I restart my taranis X9d + se .... it scrambles the whole card and I get the sd card warning right away. Any information on why this would happen? I have tried many times. Thanks

The SD card that comes with the Taranis is kind of shit. Replace it with even a cheap aftermarket one.

I just installed all this..... I have never had Lua scripts on my controller at all and of course I had to be the first one to find this error... But with that being said when I remove the BF folder out of my SD card I can use the menu key the same as you did in the original thing without having to go through all that other stuff... You may want to check into it again all I did was remove the BF file after I got the memory error... So maybe you have to install the BF file first to make sure it all works and is installed.. but after that you can remove it in the menu thing will work just the same... If I need to I will show or upload a video ...

Hey Joshua.. im having a problem with my taranis x9d plus. I have updated it to opentx 2.2 about 6 months or more ago. Everything working fine up until now. When the radio plays certaon sounds it will get cut off mid way through. Example.. when the inactivity alarm plays it will say.."inactivity al." And stop and wont finish the sound file. Also some other sounds will be cut off as well.. they start to play and then stop.. everything else works perfect. Please help. Thanks

I'm sorry I don't know specifically about this issue but I would suggest trying updating the SD card contents to make sure you have the latest version. That's honestly a long shot though.

First confirm telemetry is working. When you run the script does it say "NO TELEMETRY" at the bottom? When you go to the Telemetry screen, do you see a bunch of sensors with blinking stars next to them indicating they are being updated?
