Going back to party shifts with Nixon in the 60s, every Democratic President has never had more than around 5 people indicted, much less convicted, whereas every Republican President sans Gerald Ford (who simply didn't have enough time to do anything, serving only half a term before losing to Carter) was in the double digits of indictments and convictions, with Nixon and Reagan being the highest, and now Drumpf will probably be joining them.

I regularly advise people to care as much about Congress as they care about the presidency. Right now, I want to give that advice to Beto. He should run for Senate again, not President. He'd be a huge improvement over John Cornyn. And Cornyn doesn't have the crazy zombie cult following that Cruz has, so Beto would probably smoke him and be able to do some real good for America. Because it doesn't matter how cool the president is if Congress, especially the Senate, opposes everything they do.

Mmm idk I was really disappointed when I found out Beto lost too but I don't think it would've been the best idea for him to try again for the Texas Senate seat, he gained a lot of momentum because he was so close but a lot of it came from outside of Texas, and unfortunately for now Texas is still on the redder side of it's shifting purple, people here are too afraid of what it'll mean to have a democratic representative.

Given the sentencing guidelines for each of the crimes he was convicted of, the sentences he received weren't that far off a 'pardon'. I dont plan to do even a single night in a US prison - seriously life-threatening - but compare his terms to those handed down by the same judges in other cases and its clear that he still has friends in low places.

When politics is about policy, the only real ways to judge a politicians integrity and leven of comitment is by looking at their voting record and maybe even comparing that to their statements now and their donors. Then again, you may judge your politician on the way they talk for all I care, I am not saying any way is wrong or not.

@@lorenzoschutte2902 the bigger problem is donors, otherwise it is better to believe in what a candidate is selling now because positions change. Past statements, policy and positions should only be looked at within the context during which they were held: Say a candidate promised to be more of a "law and order" candidate and actually held a position of being tough on crime; however that candidate now is advocating for prison reform and decriminalization of some drugs. If the candidate has shown (s)he will hold the position (s)he's saying (s)he'll have, like (s)he did in the past, why not put trust in them now? Tldr: if a candidate was and is honest, sticking to his words in the past and is now offering an agenda you can get behind you should support that candidate regardless of positions he's held previously.

@@diegosanchez894 Merely because of the fact that if their new position is a complete flip-flop from their previously advocated position, even though back then you could have trust them to come as advertised, the newly advocated position will be contradictory to the position you trusted him/her on previously. A healthy dose of scepticism when it comes to public officials is advised, especially when they suddenly come around to a completely new position because the winds of opportunity have shifted. Tl:dr Never trust politicians out right, if their new position is completely opposed to the previous position, then look at the donor list before trusting. Otherwise you might help elect an opportunist who is just interested in power and not in actually fighting for the newly acquired positions.

@@lorenzoschutte2902 there are two premises to your argument with which I disagree. The first is that politicians cannot reliably change their position on a certain topic. The second is that you have to assume every candidate is an important test so you have to be cynical about every one of their claims. Opportunists are usually easy to spot and maybe I am being too optimistic but I think most if not all of the democratic candidates have good intent in their minds. When I'm criticizing people who judge candidates on previous positions I am mostly referring to articles claiming a candidate is unfit due to having voted with the other party on a certain occasion several years back like Beto did with the Republicans. It's just not a solid argument against a candidate.
