I'm from Russia. I don't know English. I've been watching this RU-vid for six months now. At first I thought that the comrade in the video was selling weapons or teaching how to survive in the wild. It turns out we are talking about board games. but I keep watching. Now I love board games.
I find it hilarious that Hasbro provided a review copy for you. I mean, I think your channel is excellent, but I can't imagine it features heavily on the Hasbro's "suitable to all ages" list of approved reviewers. Or maybe someone there actually has a sense of humour and isn't full of corporate bullshit.
To clarify the rules you had about the haunt you asked about, you can always split up your movement with other actions. Unless something specifically ends it. So you could move, attack, move, etc. if the haunt said “if you are on an event time, you can ____”. You could move to an event tile, do that thing, then keep moving.
I got 3rd edition when it first released and played it that weekend and then went to play it again when I got an expansion, and when we got it out all the house tiles had curled.
I picked this up super cheap earlier this year. I got two games in back to back as a warm up to a long game session. It was ridiculous and a lot of fun because of it. Not balanced, but it felt fun because it wasn’t balanced.
We had 3rd edition but had to jettison it. A lot of the haunts didnt make sense and some ended up in an infinite loop where you just wanted to kill yourself to finish the game and play something else
Is there a hidden meaning to do with whether we get to C U "next Time" or "next Tuesday"? Before the internet, the guy who lived by the local beach used to run a surf phone line, that would inform the caller if the surf conditions were good or not. It was a premium rate phone line, however, the introduction at the start of the call was very slightly different depending on whether the conditions were good or bad. A few locals knew about this, and so they didn't need to listen to the whole message and weren't charged very much. I wonder if "Tuesday" Vs "Time" reviews reveal a hidden secret opinion about the game...
I stll have my second edition that I keep for the occasional pull out (oh matron). It's a game that in many regards has been surpassed, but as a simple party game which can be introduced to new players and played with little delay, it deserves a place on my games shelves as it owes me nothing and is surprisingly widely known even among non-gamers.
Played Betrayal 2nd and 3rd edition. 2nd was one of the very first board games I've ever played. What is your favorite version of Betrayal? I had no idea there was a legacy version of this, and I just learned about a Baldur's Gate version thanks to this video.
@@BoardGameBollocks I thought that Legacy did a phenomenal job streamlining the rules with the 'take any named action once per turn', so things like Invoke, Drink, Eat, Attack etc. Post-campaign completion, Legacy is my go-to version.
I'm excited for this one. I don't think I've played a more bollocks game then Betrayal at Hour on the Hill. I describe it to people as "Scooby Doo Talisman" Total randomness on top of total randomness on top of randomness. I'm hoping you shred this game. *starts video* EDIT AFTER WATCHING: Oh snap, you like this game. Bollocks! I'll show myself out.
Hah I'm intrigued my mother loves talisman and still plays it. I've played it a couple of times and thought it was ok. Is it notoriously bollocks like? Has this guy reviewed it on here?
I be looking at this game but not sure if i should for 1st, 2nd or 3rd or wait for 4th. Bugger i got to wait anyway might as will save for all the version but i really do want to The Scooby-Doo version might get the for my birthday it on top of game i want witch there is a lot... I fuck love Scooby-Doo used to have a pillow but i lost it:( Wonder if there's a Scooby-Doo board game going to look that up later
Just before I was about to click “buy” on the second edition I read that a 3rd, more streamlined edition was going to be released. The art put me off since I wanted a more eerie and haunting atmosphere not a fucking kids cartoon but since English is not our native language here in Sweden I decided to go with the 3rd edition in the end and pre-ordered that sucker. We had fun playing it even though it’s still broken and a bit unclear so no regrets. 😂
I never was a fan of this game in any edition. While I don't mind an element of luck, or especially dice rolling in my games, I found the whole experience to be just way too random to be able to strategize effectively. Tack on that player elimination you mentioned and it's a no-thanks from me. Sometimes you're just done for and there's nothing you or anybody can do about it.

Looks like they upgraded the dreaded player board and stat sliders too? That was such a horrible production in previous editions. Those minis look nicer than 2nd ed too, although unpainted; 2e's are in soft bendy plastic and pretty horrible to me. We do like this game, not sure if it's worth spending to go from 2 to 3rd edition though, since we always took it as a fun goofy game, we never cared much about the unbalanced rules. Made for more thematic deaths of horror 😁 Thanks for the review!
The only good thing about this game is that it's not its legacy version where you feel obligated to sit through the entire campaign to see if it gets any better...(spoiler: it doesn't)
This game can be bad in certain groups - if grandpa isn't really sure what's going on, and then has to go into another room and read a rulebook by himself out of nowhere...
Scoring free games now?! Baller! I still have the 1st Ed. The 2nd Ed. didn't really convince me to "upgrade". It's an OK game, it can be a sh!tshow, flawed but fun, sometimes it plays out incredibly well and sometimes it's garbage. And it is inexcusably and appallingly bad how much of of the rules books (scenario instructions) are poorly written. That said, it can be fun with the right group. A good Halloween tradition or something (but I prefer Last Night on Earth). I've thought about getting copies of the haunts from the new editions of the game to run with the 1st Ed., but I'm not sure if I'd then be missing some specific cards (the chits you can just use whatever, there's lots). But I (perhaps naively) think they would have had to have done a better job of writing up the new scenarios ... or just fixing the old ones, making them clearer or simply more coherent. Right? I dunno. And I still think that the Underground Lake, as an Upper Floor tile, was not a typo! They just said that to appease people! Look at the picture! You can see the multi-story drop in the artwork, and where the lower floors broken boards around the edges of the walls are, as it goes down several levels to where an underground lake would be found! Creative license derailed by pedantic thinking!
The haunts from the old games aren’t compatible with this. And to clarify, I’ve occasionally received review copies from publishers but make it clear to them that if their games sucks then I’ll be saying so. It’s a RU-vid policy that you have to make clear that you’ve received a free game or have an association with a business however small I inconsequential that may be. I have never and will never take payment for a review. Cheers 👍🏻
So i’ve played every edition of this game, and i hated the third edition so much i gave it away. There’s a mr potato head easter egg on the nursery tile.
I would call this game quirky.....yep quirky describes it best. That being said it is one of my more favorite games to bring to the table......mostly for the absolutely crack ass'n laughing interaction and banter around the table...... Bullocks!
I bought the first edition and.disposed of it. I have occasionally thought of repurchasing the game but generally I don’t like to do that. Your mixed review doesn’t help but it’s a fair take on an ambitious flawed but unique design.
I can't stand this one. Just too much luck, and rarely any interesting decisions to make. With the right frame of mind it can be fun, especially the exploration bit at the beginning, but the haunts have fallen flat for me more often than not - and with 100 other games that don't require me to lobotomize myself to enjoy them, why would I bother? My opinion is based on 1st ed, but it does not really look to have changed substantively.
