BETTE DAVIS "A BASICALLY BENEVOLENT VOLCANO" BBC 1983 (2/8)

Part 2: In this segment, Miss Davis recollects the moment when she knew one day her mother would never work again, and offers an insight into the peculiar brilliance of Jack Warner; the early attempts to glamorize her image before she began to establish herself as a unique Hollywood icon; the direction that 1933s Cabin in the Cotton indicated Bette would one day head in her career; and the lessons Miss Davis learned about Americas relationship with Hollywood from traveling across the country to do publicity for Warner Bros. during the height of the Great Depression.
Alongside the Turner Classic Movies documentary All About Bette one decade later, A Basically Benevolent Volcano might be the best of the many documentaries made on the life and career of Bette Davis. While this 1983 BBC production is far less educational than subsequent documentaries (no mention is ever made of Of Human Bondage and its importance in the history of both Bette Davis and the Academy Awards!) the film shines thanks largely to a priceless interview with Bette Davis, one of the last interviews she would give prior to the relentlessly, tragically unfair series of physical and personal setbacks that would befall her from 1983 to 1985. This dark but empowering chapter in the life of The First Lady of the American Screen would include a double mastectomy, a massively debilitating stroke that slurred her speech, a broken hip that undermined her ability to walk or act with her body the way she had done so masterfully on film for decades, and, worst of all, the cold and cruel betrayal of her eldest daughter, the beloved child who abandoned her mother and wrote a whiney but nasty book about herafter becoming a Born Again Christian, no less (today she runs the B.D. Hyman Ministry, named after herself). While Bettes continued triumphs against the worst of the hurdles life could offer would be her greatest challenge and most inspiring legacy, Volcano offers a chance to see how truly happy and fulfilled Bette Davis was in the first half of her seventies, before fate delivered a slow-motion death blow in the years that lay ahead. In addition to a truly marvelous interview with Miss Davis, her co-stars (who became some of her closest lifelong friends) Olivia de Havilland, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Anne Baxter, as well as one of her favorite directors and greatest admirers, the legendary Joseph L. Mankiewicz, writer/director of All About Eve.
VIVA LA BETTE!!!

Bette is the true definition of a funny, talented, classic beauty. Even in this interview she is in her 70s and still lights up a room and is such a beauty! It is sad that the current generation idolizes people like the talentless kardashians and Paris Hilton type hollywood people.

Her outspokenness probably cost her the two Oscars, losing for "All About Eve" and of course the bru ha ha over her loss for "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane". Hollywood wasn't ready for women like Bette being tough and outspoken. They still aren't.

I recently found a BBC interview ; not sure live or in a magazine. I found it on internet. Bette is asked about Joan and she describes her very honestly and tastefully. She also describes what it must have been like for Joan when her daughter wrote the book and that Joan didn't deserve to be treated that way. So the interview was before Bette's daughter's book. The Bette/Joan feud was mostly for publicity I believe. If I found it I'm sure you will be able to:)

I love how she refers to herself and her upbringing as "Yankee"! Who says that anymore? I love it because it encapsulates a whole style, a whole continent, a way of life, a complete history unto itself which no longer exists in spirit. What does it mean to be "yankee" in a Hollywoodised and globalised world? The racial nomenclature seems so provincial now because of its geopolitical nuances. But I love how she takes great pride in it and recovers the term which was once a derisive term in American history and reimagines it as a way to distinguish herself and set herself apart very clearly from the "rest of" the non-New England hoi poloi of the United States. In this way, Bette makes sure that it is widely known that she created a certain kind of acting, with its roots in Puritanism: ie; based on hard work, a strong a Christian ethic, a certain strict and unerring moral code, as well as a particular way of moving, gesticulating, articulating and possessing the self. There is agency in Bette's "yankee" art form of acting. It is meant to put all those Californian, déclassé and dispossessed "ethnic" (Russian, Jewish, Eastern European and German) Hollywoodians back in their place. Bette's sense of style was always to reposition, recover or relocate people within her universe of moral coding: other actors, her bosses like Jack Warner , other women she deemed as not as competent as she (Joan Crawford) and especially men. The Davisian recovery of "Yankee" as late as 1980 is a postmodern political strategy for Davis used very effectively throughout her career and she can be seen speaking about it in many interviews well before this particular 1980 one, well backwards into the 1950s! Tell me, who - outside of the political fray perhaps - speaks of being a "yankee" anymore? This Yankee Doodle actress was extremely political even if she claims she wasn't in certain interviews. Her politics wasn't obvious but it was certainly a kind of sensorial economy that she used or a "soft power" where an individual of high public profile assumes a position in society and then wields it against the system and status quo. In this peculiar way, Bette was intrinsically political and politicised.

@DDumbrille
@DDumbrille 10 лет назад
Bette Davis is no doubt one of the best actresses in the history of film, and one of my favorites. But no one is a saint, and while it was unfortunate that she suffered so many health problems as described above, it's very likely that the cancer and especially the stroke may have been completely prevented had Ms. Davis not smoked 4-5 packs of cigarettes a day. Behind that so-called 'tough' exterior, was someone dependent on nicotine to give her that toughness and strength. Sad...
@DDumbrille
@DDumbrille 10 лет назад
Pearl Girl I was referring solely to Ms. Davis, and the reputation she had as a tough (or strong) woman, and one I feel that may not have been so tough had she not had the 'support' of the drug she was addicted to. I'm sorry for your grandmother's situation, but keep in mind there are many, many causes of cancer (pesticides, fungicides, chemicals (which are in almost everything -- food, drink, cosmetics, plastics, air,), etc., etc. Cancer has also been strongly linked with fungal infections and mold.

@stmichl9433
@stmichl9433 4 года назад
RJOCooper11 she loves this line the most but what's interesting is it's the least remembered line repeated these days. The gay and drag-community - who single-handedly manage the use and sovereignty of the great Hollywood one liners - tend to worship the line "what a dump!" From Beyond the Forest. But "I'd love to kiss ya/ just washed my hair" is rarely remembered these days. As much as I love that line, it lacks the trashing and superiority in its sentiment that "what a dump!" Possessed and which is why the latter has been used by every camp showman or woman since Davis's passed on. The Davis persona hadn't fully caught on yet when she uttered "I'd love to kiss ya..." and so perhaps is why it didn't stick.
