Bette Davis was one of the greatest actresses. She was so open and honest in her interviews. There was nothing fake about her. She truly loved acting. As she always mentioned----she fought for good movie roles, the amount of money came later.....she was one of a kind.
@maya8443
@maya8443 4 года назад
Absolutely! I agree with you, she was the best. What I like about her the most is that she wasn't full of herself even tho she had a right for being such incredible actress. It's sad that Bette was betrayed by her own daughter when she wrote that book. B.D broke Bette's heart so much that Bette never spoke to her ever again.

I recall seeing this when it first aired - Better Davis was THE STAR no question about it! Incidentally, it's worth noting that there was another legend in that room (in the beginning of the show). The great fashion designer of countless Hollywood films - Edith Head. Miss Head had been Oscar nominated a jaw-dropping thirty-five times over her very long career - eight times a winner. One of her Oscar wins came from one of Bette's best pictures - "All About Eve," from 1950. It's not surprising that Bette would want to work with her again. Cheers and thanks for the great post!

Could be -- although I've seen interviews where she said that as an old-school New Englander, she wasn't really demonstrative around most people in her personal life; she wasn't a big hugger or kisser, and she didn't show her feelings a lot. So maybe she's just being her usual reserved self here -- although she does seem to let her guard down a little for Olivia Olivia de Havilland.

Multi-faceted character heavy weight actress. Stunning. It made me cry so much the way her characters hid their emotions to other characters in her films that didn't have a clue how intensely her character loved them, before she got older and sexist Hollywood type cast her wrongly as villains that were not layered or complex.

I especially liked the moment with William Wyler. IMO, she did her best pictures with him. While almost all of Davis’s performances were great, she had a tendency to go over the top. Wyler didn’t allow it. He made sure that she stayed true to the character, and her performances with him were unbeatable.

Came across a mention of the occasion in Robert Wagner's memoir, _Pieces of My Heart._ Wagner recounts how she was fuming after the show, for having been tricked into being its subject. According to Wagner, she claimed never to have met Jay Robinson nor written the letter that he read on the show! Seems Robinson was the only person who took part in the event who didn't attend the after-show get-together at the Bel-Air Hotel, across the road from the TV studio, a possible indicator that there was indeed some substance to Miss Davis's claim. If you look back over the segment, it looks pretty obvious that she was somewhat non-responsive to the man.
@GeeBee909
@GeeBee909 9 месяцев назад
The after-party was actually at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood (on Hollywood Blvd) not in Bel-Air which was miles from the studio. Also, I read that Davis was ok with doing the show because of how nIce Ralph was to her mother when she was the subject on This Is Your Life (she considered her appearance payback)

Loved her hair, loved her black gloves, but most of all we were treated to some of her smoking right on the show. Quite the expert: the corners of her mouth sort of turn down as she blows out strongly; she reinhales some smoke through her nose. Her imitator nailed the smoking too. Then, the reenactment of the final scene from Now Voyager with Paul -- what a treat!

I’ve heard of many stars who didn’t want to be on this show at all. They were surprised.. and their relatives and past friends were already flown in and coached on what they would say by the time the star even knew (either right before or surprised by it) that they were to be in the show. Sad for those stars. Watch James Garner. He was upset by it and he said it on The Tonight show with Johnny Carson.

Eerie that Olivia is the only living person nowadays in that episode.

Notice how when Olivia hugged her she just stood there she hugged no one back not one guest

I don't think Bette was a particularly touchy-feely sort of a woman. She was also pretty reserved, she said herself a few years later that whilst she would never consider herself shy, she was sometimes uncomfortable in a social context - she's not alone, she's human! many can relate to this, not everyone is as overly energetic, and somewhat false it has to be said, as Livvy deHavilland.
