Greatest live performer of all time. When you realize the complexity of a number like this it really makes your jaw drop. And they make it look like so easy....Indy 500 drivers don't have the driving skills of these ladies.
Bette Midler The Divine Miss M is truly a legend. I absolutely love her. Feel in love with her in Hocus Pocus when I was 10 and I'm now 37 soon to be 38.
Bette did this act decades before Gaga donned the tail and wheelchair. Ms. Midler is the true pioneer, everything done by others after this point is just riffing Bette.
I think the Off-Off-Broadway play 'Vain Victory' from Jackie Curtis did the wheelchair and tail-thing way before Bette Midler. So Bette, who began her career in several Off-Off-Broadway plays, was - in your words - riffing too. But that's art too: Getting inspired by others.
It is not the full show Bette performed for that tour. Major bad editing . It is so much better to see (or hear) the full "DETOUR" performance...as I believe was originally intended for HBO.
The thing is gaga was a mermaid in the video..and wanted to bring that story to stage..and still have mobility...what u want her in a hover round. Not even the same aesthetic used either. Both are talented. I can't say for sure..but I've heard from people that bette isnt nice at restaurants...and doesn't want them looking at her or they get fired. If it is true..idk. hope not..because she is so talented. I'd love to.meet them both
Bette And I Met At.Sunset Sound Studios on August 5th 1980 . The Studio is not the same ..If it wasn't for my late Friend Jim Parker , Bette And I Would Of Never Met ....Bette Midler Liked me And She Did Spend A lot of time with me . I was really Surprised when she asked me so many personal Questions ? , She told me she is Bette And told me she just Bought a house . I really Believe she liked me and wanted to know more about me as well . I feel I really screwed things up between us . I really didn't mean too. . And I think about us being together everyday .. I miss my late friend Jim And Being With Bette Very much ....The Wild thing is Bette And My friend Jim Was Together alone for long periods of a time on October 31st 1980, That was the night When Bette Kept looking at me across from the desk she sitting ..I wanted to talk to her again , I couldn't think of a word to say to her . then I was thinking about Halloween , so as a little joke , I said to Bette So Are you Going trick or treating tonight ? You all should have seen the look on her face " while she was looking at me with a funny look and said no excuse me " And walked fast out of the room . That was the last time I seen her ...I really felt I insulted her . I didn't mean that in a insulting way . But I really Believe she took it like that .My Friend Jim said to me " Oh Rob You Blew it ...I think about this every day ....
Oh please like there wasn't some queen in Gaga's camp that saw Bette Midler doing Dolores Delago the toast of Chicago and planted the mermaid idea! And this is not a slam on GG. She is fierce but her act and persona is an amalgam of the divas that paved her way - Cher, Bette, Madonna, Grace Jones etc. (Grace was rocking Phillip Treacy headgear when Stefani Germanotta was crapping in her pampers.) Next we'll see GG wearing a banana skirt a la Josephine Baker! Young queens recognize don't hate!
This was recorded for "ART OR BUST" an HBO music special that was supposed to be a Bette Midler concert but over half of the actual concert was edited out and needless distracting special affects were added to the footage. Very disappointing! So you were actually at this concert?
@@kristopherwilhite It was the 80's so forgive my hazy memory. But I DID attend a show of her at Northrup and rumor was that the show(s) were filmed but I don't recall seeing any cameras. They did do that number with motorized chairs.
@@kristopherwilhite Yes, I did. Northrup Auditorium was a 2000+ seat (approx) venue on Campus. In 1983 it was one of the few venues in the state of that size. A traditional auditorium "theater" in a proscenium arrangement. It's been remodeled to remove some seating.
when it comes to creativity and imagination and reinventing yourself?...NO ONE in "Golly-wood" has done it better, sorry. That Kennedy Center Honor they gave her recently, was such a no-brainer, becaause it represents the best of what the arts in the country, has produced. And she's on that list, as the no-brainer of all no-brainers.
so she tells off Lady Gaga for wearing a mermaid costume in a wheelchair, but she sings I Will urvive, that is not her song but thats not a bad thing. You cannot own an idea, Bette, you can not own a song unless you composed it, and even if that costume is yours, im sure Lady Gaga didnt steal it from you, and she didnt steal your wheelchair, did her? So pointless...Just enjoy performing and stop cutting others wings off.
It's humor; mermaids can't walk, therefore it's logical to put them in wheelchairs - how else would they get around? Not an attack on handicapped people or mocking them. A bit overly sensitive.
Hello Chee. Wheel chairs and power chairs are not just for medical reasons. There are a lot of situations where someone needs to move around on wheels. I'm a person who likes to dress in mermaid outfits and many mermaids I know have to rely on chairs with wheels, or power chairs, or rolling carts, to get around at events and parties.
