the 24 hours break or longer is 100% true, disconnect from it. you will see lots of mistakes and things you can improve looking later at it

May I give you a little editing exercise? I learnt it in film school... but it helped me loads in understanding the difference between "a shot" and "a shot with it's intention". Basically take a movie you like and take out some parts of that movie. And with these parts... try telling a 1 minute sorry without sound. If you'd like music. But the importance is, even if they are talking. it's not important what they are saying. I managed to create a little comedic story just with the rocky film. My problem was that I didn't realy grasp the idea of the shot, cause I worked on those edits with the preconception and knowledge I had, that were the intentions of that shot and what i was followed by. So the teacher sat next to me and asked: what do you see... Rocky balboa is training. He said wrong. Forget about the story... What Do You See? A guy running. Next shot, What do you see? A woman and a man walking on ice. And so on. I finally got it. So even if you shoot something... try to see if what you shot, you can give it a different meaning to during the edit, then iwhat it was intended for. This also helps a lot in editing and also pacing. Because you really only concentrate on that shot and what it happening within that time frame.

Brandon, you are sooo right! I never thought about asking what is a good pace for the edit! I've always asked myself during editing whether a clip is too long, too short, and what length I should make it...but never thought about asking someone else! Also, having you share some of your insight on workflow during the edit is good stuff! I'm fairly new to video and editing, so this is great stuff! Thank you for sharing!

In six minutes, you have completely changed the way I approached editing. My mindset was always: "edit to the beat" as I was constantly worried about a mismatch between the footage. The irony is that it is often the mismatch which arouses and retains one's interest in a video. As usual, thank you for all of your advice! Very much appreciated!

DUUUUUDE!!!! Just vimeo'd out on your work and then went to look for some tutorials from you on youtube and found this. PERFECT TIMING. I've been stuck on this one edit for 2 weeks now because of lack of motivation, focusing on the intro, bored of it, jumping around the timeline wit bits and pieces, and just easily distracted. This video is just what i needed to hear. Thanks for the inspiration and motivation. Your work is pure gold man. Keep the advice coming! We all need it.

My favorite advise here is to edit against the beat cuz that's so new to me and so helpful, especially now when everybody focus on, to captivate his/her audience. Man i love these insights. I think he is one those few film makers whose advises should be spread out to all the filmmaking community .

Incredibly well explained. 100% agree with taking a break. After editing for too long you start to make mistakes and forget the purpose of your video. Best and most humble filmmaker out there. Keep it up

I completely agree with the leaving your edit alone for a while. Even as a novice editor I find it really helpful to step away and then later on coming back rewatching it in the perspective of a viewer and pick out the little things I can't fix on such as maybe a clip is slightly too long or cutting our unnecessary footage.

Glad someone's finally focusing on the more abstract, fundamental concepts of filmmaking. I'm definitely a victim of being a slave to cutting to the beat, and your other tips are hard lessons to learn. I get addicted to certain sections and want to pull all nighters to see the project done as quick as possible.

Wonderful way of opening the way you "think" a video! I would also recommend to take a break for a day or so, once you finished filtering all the material so your brain can digest all the information. Creative ideas will flow better and always carry a notebook to write down your thoughts.

I struggle with pacing. I usually don’t notice the pacing issues until I walk away from the edit for a day or two. I like your points on watching music videos with the sound off, and using cinematic music. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I find them very helpful.

on the subject of music, great points. I once used a more classical song for some hip hop dancers in the park. I looooooved the result, by walking away from what is expected to something unexpected. Looking a the waveforms does make a difference, finding the right places for the transitions....The music is an important factor, it enhances the experience of the viewer.

So true about what you said about taking a break from editing. I have a problem of grinding through 16hrs editing sometimes and get impatient and end up posting vids that I regret later because of simple mistakes I notice days later

excellent advice Brandon!! as an editor I perfectly understand what you're talking about. I particularly agree with your 3rd piece of advice where you say that you need to take a break from your edits to just refresh your eyes and might see something a little bit different . I also edit all my videos to the instrumental music such as soundtracks and immediate music...I love it when the waves of the audio go up and down like a choppy ocean- i always need those buildups and change of beat as opposed to working with a monotone sound throughout the whole vid. with the different beats you can play around with the pace like u said that gives different emotions to the viewer

1. Watch a music video with and without the music (music videos are edited in a syncopation against the rhythm of the beat to keep the audience interested. your brain relaxes too much when it senses a pattern/rhythm without a break, causing a mental disconnect) 2. Start a new edit with well-paced music (gives a base to work with even if you're not using that music in the final product. movie/cinematic soundtracks that have build-ups are recommended. check the waveform graph to see if it's suitable) 3. Take out/replace the music with something completely different for a finished edit to explore options 4. Take a break from your editing, especially before you submit it 5. Try to notice where you're over-focusing on to prevent yourself from neglecting other parts of the edit

Interesting. I'm usually a big proponent of editing to silence, I find music makes me fall into a rhythm rather than create one that suits the story or footage. But I think I'll give this a try. Classical music is where I'll start since it explores most moods and themes. It also contains the inherent tension and timbre required to make something feel complete. Thanks, Brandon

Great info and insight. I would add maybe learn to tell a story with static shots before adding all these crazy and distracting transitions and editing tricks I see out there. Keep it simple until you learn how to communicate your story... then add one or two fun transitions. My favorite and most relatable advice you gave... Take a break! I did an album back in the day entitled "Unperfected Imperfections"...Meaning... As creators, it will never be perfect:) Thanks for sharing with us!

It was definitely interesting to find out that you edit to the music and then, maybe, change the music. I'm still figuring out what is best for my kind of work. I am filming and editing to compose music for it later. Issue i face here when i am editing to an existing track that on a later phase of actually composing my own piece i will be too influenced by the track that was used through editing process. As of now i am kinda tracking the pacing in my mind which is definitely much harder than editing to an existing track. Big thanks on sharing the knowledge. Really appreciate it, Brandon. Cheers.

is it weird that I enjoy the film and tv show soundtracks like Game of Thrones or Arrival much more than actual music? Great Video Brandon, the break also goes for color grading, your eye got so used to the color and edit, you just need a break to see it from a different perspective. your tutorials help much more than you think!

Another great video! One thing I find helpfull sometimes is to flip the entire video horizontally to be able to look at it with 'fresh eyes'.

Sometimes I keep the video as it is and then I view it whilst in a head stand position. It gets blood to the brain, too, which helps. :)

Not so silly. I just finished some work with stills. To be sure the images really work, I turn them upside down. If the composition still looks right - win! Hadn't thought about applying this to video. Use a horizontal mirror? Hold the monitor upside down? Probably safer for those of us for whom a headstand is only a faint dream. Anyway, thanks for the music suggestion.
