Yeah, I said it, but did I mean it?!
This is the Reverend Sensei RA in midnight black (no longer available in this color, but it is available in other nice colors) that I bought used. Want to know how to buy used gear? Watch this: • How To Buy Used Guitar...
This guitar is equipped with a bunch of features not always found on guitars, even in its price range. (MSRP $1439, but often $1199 at places like Sweetwater.)
The most unique feature is the bass contour knob, which is way different than a regular tone control and I believe unique to Reverend Guitars. Watch the video for a sound demo of this.
It's also got a treble bleed circuit, but I did not demo that in this video. Treble bleed is common enough that you can easily find many demos of it.
Anyway, this is a professional level guitar that I think you'll especially like if you like Gibson SGs. Unless you're one of those weirdos who are all "it's Gibson or nothing." In that case I can't help you. Nobody can. ;) I personally love the SG Standard, but this Reverend definitely gives it a run for its money.
Specs on the Sensei RA:
Body: Korina
Pickups: Railhammer Chisel Bridge, Chisel Neck
Bridge: TOM with Stop Tail
Neck: Three-Piece Korina
Scale: 24 3/4"
Neck Profile: Medium Oval
Fingerboard: Ebony - 12" Radius
Frets: 22 - 0.110"W x 0.050"H
Truss Rod: Dual Action - Headstock Access
Tuners: Reverend Pin-Lock locking tuners
Nut: 43mm Width - Boneite
Controls: Volume, Tone, Bass Contour, 3-way pickup switch
Signal chain: Rev Sensei RA → Pedalboard (JHS Muffuletta, JHS Packrat, Keeley Caverns, Behringer EQ, Behringer Noise Gate; powered by Cioks DC7) → Focusrite Scarlett Solo → macbook

NON-IMPORTANT NOTE
The guitar track in the intro actually is 4 guitar tracks, but I don't know how to film myself recording all those tracks and also edit all that video into something in iMovie so what you see is me pretending to play all the tracks at once, which is why it looks a little off. 🤣 All the other sound demos in the video are legit live playing, which probably isn't something to brag about but it is what it is. ;)
Ok, thanks for watching! Subscribe or else.

The double cutaway’s single most important feature is for playing slide. I have the exact guitar you’re playing and in fact I bought mine on EBAY and it’s a prototype! Labeled as such.

I like demos using a little less distortion! 2 reasons: 1- straight into an amp (tube is my preference) is the most honest sound of the guitar. 2- everyone uses a different distortion set up, pedal etc. I like clean. I want to hear what the guitar would sound like if say Tommy Tedesco was playing it not just EVH! And as soon as I typed this you went to a clean sound! TY!!!

I agree, too much distortion doesn't do the instrument right. To me, under distortion, every guitar sounds the same, it's just a sound porredge and it nerves my ears.

Great video. I bought a Reverend Contender 290 within the past year and absolutely fell in love with it. Korina body and neck came in just under 7 lbs. Just bought a Sensei and can’t wait to play it. The pickups sound very versatile. Reverend makes good guitars for sure.

Great video. I was between a few options (I was kind of thinking about the Kim Thayil Guild Polara) after deciding that I hated the Floyd Rose and actives on the GH-600 and feeling like the Billy Corgan Z-One felt way too much like a Strat, but I just got the Reverend Sensei RA in silverburst last night. Your video and playing makes me feel good about the choice.

Planes? At least you don't have trains. Luckily, I'm in a sound studio, so you can't hear them in here, because I'm 50 yards or so from a raised train track. Well, I gave you a few views and a sub. Would love it if you did the same for me (shameless plug over). I guess it's been long enough since you owned your SG that you forgot some very important differences that might have helped this video. One is the body carve. Some people don't like the sharp corners of the Reverend or the Yamaha, and the rounded edge is something the SG has abundantly. Because of this, the reverend has a little more weight on average. As far as the neck dive, that's a give and take with the weight of the body vs the neck and head stock. Some people weight the rear pin, some wear a leather strap (me), and others move the front pin to the points like Tony Iommi and the Reverend you're demo'ing here. Doesn't change the seated position, but one can always use the classical hold for stability seated. I would say the money saved on the Reverend goes to the lack of any kind of case or bag (SG comes with a bag or case, depending on the standard or '61 standard), Poly finish vs nitro (some people like poly better because it holds up and stays the same for years), and Korina hidden under the finish (aesthetic choice only) vs Mahogany under clear nitro (except the ebony models). One could argue that the locking tuners are an upgrade and certainly deserve mentioning. Which one to choose? That's up to the player. The necks feel completely different, and Gibson pickups v Railhammers are like night and day. All comes to user preference, that's for sure. I wouldn't argue "better", I would argue, "more suited to this player." You did well with the review.
@ArtOfShredYT
@ArtOfShredYT Год назад
Ha, I used to live near the trains and the planes, but moved just far enough away from the trains where you can only hear them when you're outside. Thanks so much for your detailed comment. Some of my commentary in this video was just to upset the diehard Gibson folks who leave comments on other brands (or cheap guitars) like "just buy a Gibson and be done with it." I love Gibson & SGs but not everybody can afford the brand name premium. And not everybody even wants a big brand name. Anyway, this Reverend is great (although I'm trying to sell it so I can buy and review a Tony Iommi Epiphone SG Special). They're obviously different guitars even though they have some similarities. The necks feel very similarly to me, but I know the shape is different. As for which to choose, you're definitely right it comes down to personal preference.

@@ArtOfShredYT I've been thinking about buying some of these budget guitars to compare with the guitars I have in my collection, but I don't know as it would pay off in the long run on my channel. You must lose some $$ in the transition between guitars, because there's just no real resale in the budget lines, so unless you have an extreme discount, breaking even might take some time. Now with the tax being levied on Reverb and Facebook, the sales are even less lucrative. My "day job" pays too much for me to dodge any of it legally. Every extra penny bites me in the rear at the end of the year. I know what you mean about die-hard fans. The dyed-in-the-wool Gibson/Fender/PRS/etc... fans are tough nuts. That's coming from a guy who has six Gibsons and four of them are Les Paul models. That doesn't count my Taylor, Fender, and Rickenbacker. In my whole collection, I have two overseas models: a PRS SE Silver Sky (Indonesia) and a Fender Aerodyne bass (Japan). That didn't happen overnight, that's for sure, but unlike most RU-vid wannabes, I don't have twenty-five budget guitars, I'm just a wannabe with a smaller collection of higher end models. What's funny is that a lot of these folks who collect IYV, Firefly, etc... wind up spending the same amount of money I would on a Gibson. There are people who are just as hard core against owning the big brands as there are those who own them, perhaps more. My attitude? Play what you love and inspires you to play. That's the best guitar, regardless of price tag. Don't put someone down for buying more expensive, less expensive, or a different brand. I get the feeling you have a similar philosophy. I did a series of four Les Paul guitar videos a long time ago, before I had an interface and better recording. I did a 1999 wine red Custom vs a 2016 gold top Tribute vs a 2001 PRS Singlecut (pre-lawsuit) vs an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Spoiler - The Epiphone did not sound great. I asked my son who was living with me at the time what he thought in the room, and his conclusion was the same as mine, the Epiphone was not nearly as clear and the notes did not ring as articulately as the others. That said, if I was a bedroom player just jamming in my room, the Epiphone would sound just fine. And that's really what it comes down to. What works for the use case of the individual. All that said, I could never say with a straight face, "I would keep this Firefly over my Gibson ES 335" anymore than someone would say, "I would keep this Hyundai over my BMW." They both get you to work on time, have seats, burn fuel, and have all the amenities; but at the end of the day, no one is going to go, "Wow, nice Hyundai." LOL Even the guitarists are going to say, "Nice ES 335 mate." So I would have to dump all of these inexpensive guitars. I've only got so much wall space in my 11' x 11' studio! Shoot, even now, I'm working on hanging the 330/12 Rickenbacker and Gibson '61 Standard SG, which all costs money. Storage isn't free, guitars aren't free... I wonder how these channels do it. Some of my biggest viewed videos (I am also co-host of "The Practical Guitarist Podcast") are of guitars, amps, or little tips and tricks. I've currently got close to 350k views on a cover my band did of "Freebird". You never know what's going to be the catalyst for your channel. Honestly I'm jealous of these guys who just turn on the camera and start rolling. I've got studio lighting, microphone rigging, software interfaces, video ideas, scripts, video/audio editing, retakes, re-shoots... You get the idea. Then some freaking video my son took while we played Freebird takes off? Jeesh. Anyway, I'll be watching. I'm an avid watcher of videos. Remember reading the backs of cereal boxes? I read everything as a kid. Now I put that same time and effort into these videos. Sorry about the rambling response, it's after 1 AM here, and I just realized I'm supposed to be tired. LOL Rock on!!

@@jimwoodard64 It's definitely not profitable reviewing gear as a small channel. I've spent well over $10k on guitars and gear so far (and ultimately over $6k expenses after reselling gear). Almost every time I sell a guitar I lose money (I made exactly $17.13 on the FFLPS, but that's an anomaly) but it does help to fund other guitar reviews. I'm just taking a big chance that eventually things will work out. My goal, which I'm pretty transparent about, is to eventually get sent gear to review (so far I got the Indio Boardwalk which I posted the unboxing of, but review still incoming) so it doesn't cost me money to review gear and ultimately I want to be able to pay for gear with the money the channel makes so I can stop accepting free gear. Being independent and unbiased is most important to me. As for the Reverb tax thing. That's overblown. If you sell $1k worth of gear on Reverb and get a 1099-K tax form from them, but that gear cost you $1,200 ... well, I'm not a tax professional so that's where my advice ends. But the whole thing is overblown.
