I took a Strategic Time Management Training about 12 years ago and it focused on the Franklin Covey system. I haven't been able to consistently apply it, however, but i think that was lack of consistency on my part. Now that I'm a mother of 3, working online, I've dug up my old planner and this video was a really good refresher. Thanks a ton! Hoping I have better luck in planning my life this time around!
I am in my 50’s and Franklin Covey is the OG of planning systems. (It didn’t really work for me, but I liked the prioritization part.) Then different people came on the scene with their systems. I like that you are talking about it now. I believe that hybrids of planning systems are good, so you take what works for you from any system. No system will work for everyone, nor will everything in the system work.
Franklin Covey offers a W H O L E lot. It is a methodology for managing YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. That includes family, religion, school, work, marriage... you name it. GTD can't touch that. GTD is more logistical, where FC is pragmatic, but cannot be separated from your core values. FC forces you to discover those crucial life values that we hold dear. It's about doing "What Matters Most", where GTD is simply about Getting Things Done. That's a B I G D I F F E R E N C E . FC is about planning, but also about introspection and getting a bird's eye view of your life. It can help you focus on the trees or the forest, depending on what you need. It truly is powerful. Sadly, most of us forget about the Weekly Compass, Big Rocks, Roles, and only use the Daily Planner, which I admit is quite powerful. Thanks for making this video.
@lp3198 Hi. FC and GTD are BOTH GOOD. I recommend you try GTD first. Buy the book, Getting Things Done by David Allen. Read the book and then practice GTD for 6 months. Then learn Franklin Covey. I really recommend you take a year and practice BOTH systems. Your life will improve. And you will have skills that will serve you well for the rest of your life. 🙂
@@jrgarciab I tried GTD . It is not for me. I hate it's Bottom up approach. I tried FC and I got hooked into it. It's true love. But the only problem is that i fear competition I mean with GTD in the office , u can do a lot of stufff fast. It's super effective. I dont wanna do GTD. I stick with FC. But i dont know how much effective is FC compared to GTD in office . Does FC come near GTD in efficiency in the office . How much difference is there in work place
I conducted covey system trainings back in the day - perfect example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” - so many planning systems have come and gone while this one remains .
Wow, Shelly. If you announced that at a dinner party, I'd probably ask to take a picture with you. Franklin Covey instructors were top notch when I took my 3-day course about 25 years ago. I still use the training, daily. I bet you changed a lot of lives. Here's to you. Cheers!
I agree. This system was a game changer for me 2 years ago. I've consistently stayed in this system (I've changed sizes, but system is the same) this whole time because it's so powerful. Thanks for sharing it! I LOVE when people share franklin covey. It doesn't get enough love!
This has also helped me keep my task lists smaller. I started realizing I didn't have as much time as I needed for the giant lists. I'd love to see more of these type of videos. I'm new to your channel and am really enjoying your videos!!
Ooo yes! It really is such a good one eh?! And totally agree I feel like GTD is the more popular one but this method is so much more practical day to day! Thanks for watching! ❤️
I struggled with GTD method big time. But absolutely love the Franklin Covey method. I list in the category of threes. So Must do, should do, and could do. Monthly for pre-planning. Weekly is where I put my top 3 things for the week or life areas/hot spots. Then daily inserts. I am a big fan of Franklin Covey
The “Must Do, Should Do, Could Do” is pretty much equivalent to FC’s “ABC, 123” prioritizing method. It ends up looking like “A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3” and so on.
@Sarah Jane - must do, should do, could do? Love it too. Simple and philosophically just somehow a little different to listing A,B,C; D (E? But then again surely that wouldn’t get “captured” anyway). Etc. 😂 9:15
I would personally love like a “set up the day” example video. To see which inserts you use when etc. Hope that makes sense lol. But thank you above all for your videos!!! They’re always so helpful!!
I like to use different parts of Planning systems so I implement it into my planning. My system is a mix of Bujo, Franklin Covey with a dash of GTD. TFS! ❤️🤗
I moved from Hobonichi and Jibun Techo to Franklin Planner. The structured format gives me sense of purpose. I combine it with daily to do checklist. Great Video.
Thank you for sharing how you use both systems. My planner journey started with Franklinplanner back in the late 80's. After trying several different systems over the last few years, I'm back to using the system. The prioritized task list makes planning easy for me.
I got overwhelmed with Gtd because having all those really long lists and then reviewing them each week got overwhelming and sad when things don’t get crossed off quickly enough. I love the Franklin system since starting it in 2021 and I feel like my future tasks either go on the future task list or are easy to stick on a post it note on the fifties task list. I keep all the monthly tabs in the planner so all the monthly task lists are in my binder too. I love that the system helps you align your values with your roles and big rocks.
I would like to offer my condolences for the loss of your mother. I also lost my mother as well a few months ago. I took a quick look at your channel and you cover a lot of stuff. If it is like the video I just finished then I might have a winner here.
@@MomYePlans Good morning and thank you. Like you, I have my fair share of ups and downs these past few months. It's not so bad when I'm out running errands or cutting the grass. But when it gets close to dinner or I ask what would they like. That's another story. I'm approaching it as if mom and dad where on vaction. So when they get back they would be pleasantly surprise on how I got the house "ship shape". Then they can telling my brother and I that they might have found a "new" house for themselves that's closer to family. Which would be a wonderful homecoming for them both. Now today their together again. She passed away two days before what would happen been their 57th wedding anniverary.
yessssss I want to see a video of a deeper dive of how youre planning with both systems :) I love both methods. Overall framework of my planning is GTD, but I also employ FC prioritization on the dailies.
Ok this is amazing Ye! I looked into FC method a couple years ago but found it to be too limiting because of the need to purchase their printed insert packs which I think are kind of unattractive and I don't like their paper. But I love that you created your own version of printable inserts! Totally getting them, they're so pretty! I also was curious about why no one was combining GTD and FC systems because of their different strengths but VOILA of course you are doing it! You are a productivity and planner wizard I swear. Thank you for sharing these ideas ❤️
🥺🥺 omgg you’re so sweet and kind!! I’m so happy to hear so many people have tried FC method before!! And you’re right I never really see people talking about it so this makes me so happy! Thanks again for all of your support! ❤️
I would love to see a video of how you’re implementing both systems! I’ve been following you for quite a long time & I have learned so much from you regarding the GTD method. However, if the Franklin Covey method can go with or supplement the GTD method - then I would love to learn how to put all of that together & at the end of the day just make planning easier for me! ❤😀
Thank you so much for this! I have been trying to figure out how to keep the emotional decision making for planning at bay and that reminder list is so useful!!!
So interesting, I’ve used FC for decades and never heard of Richard Winwood til now. I thought it was Hyrum W. Smith who invented the first Franklin planner? He founded Franklin Quest in 1983, which even merged with Stephen Covey’s company to form Franklin Covey (now called Franklin Planner for the planner arm of the company). I did look up both names in Wikipedia, and they both had major founding roles in the company. Hyrum W. Smith also authored several books, including “10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management,” which explains the Franklin planning method in detail, among other things. He died in November 2019. PS my condolences on the unexpected loss of your mom. I lost my mom on April 3, 2019, 2 days before my birthday. I’ve been in some existential crisis since then… she was a major part of my life.
Ooo have you adapted the system in anyway after using it for so long??? Also I’m sorry to hear about your loss as well 🥲 it’s so tough, I’m still waiting for the “time heals all” thing to happen
@@MomYePlans I should clarify - I’ve used the FC system “on and off” since around 1990. I’m actually re-reading the 7 Habits book right now (the updated 30th anniversary edition), and getting back to the system. My planner journey started with FC, then took wild detours in the past 10 years or so, and I’m coming back to it with a fresh perspective. As for grief, time will help soften the pain, but it will always be a part of you. Eventually the good memories tend to outweigh everything else. I lost my dad in 1981 when I was a kid. I can highly recommend books by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt, especially “Understanding Your Grief,” which has an accompanying optional journal by the same name. It’s very helpful. His website is called Center for Loss (I can’t post the link due to RU-vid censorship of links, but Google will point you to it).
Thank you for this new introductory Franklin Covey system. I just happen to be in the mode for resetting and revaulating the important things in life. I will definitely do more research on this topic. I hope to see more videos like this. I keep skipping plan with me videos with decorative spreads but with no functionality and purpose. I just started using my aura estelle planners with a pen and a few highlighters and going back to basic again.
Aw thank you so much for watching! While the pretty planning is nice to look at I definitely just need the functionality as well! Glad it resonates with others! ❤️
I actually use a complete Hybrid system using both principles, as well as the Full Focus Method and portions of the Makselife system as well. I have taken all the elements that work for me.....crazy hey😂😂😂
Oh I’m so interested in FC, I have inserts inspired by that system but only know a little about it. Please more FC videos 👏 I use aspects of GTD but damn some of my lists just grow and grow.
Okay… so I feel like you’ve just given me so many gifts!! 🥰 I just pulled out my old Franklin Covey planner and dusted it off. I love it and forgot all about it! I’m gonna revisit this system. ** QUESTION: can you print from your phone with this printer??? Thank you 🙏
Great video! My planner journey started with Franklin Planner in 1995! I switched to discs (via Rollabind and Levenger) around 2007, but the foundations of Franklin-Covey have stayed with me and are part of my daily note-taking system. Did I miss an announcement? Are you back in rings? I thought you were switching to discs. 😊
Wow so you’re a Franklin planner pro! Haha I am still in discs but I use that for just my printed digital planner pages! I went to pocket rings in January because I was travelling and then I started missing personal rings so I use that for dailies! But still in all the other planners I talked about for my 2023 system in some form! ❤️ thanks for watching and following the journey!
Thank you so much for this video! I watched your video about the GTD method & this one & now I’m going to watch the “Which planner system is right for you?”. I find these very helpful & I want to get better at prioritising & having a reasonable amount of tasks each day, so maybe incorporating / trying out one of these two methods could help with that? 😊 Are you still using this system?
Aw np! Thanks for watching! For me I definitely use GTD to track my tasks and incorporate elements of the FC system like prioritizing tasks but don’t necessarily use this exact layout ☺️
@@MomYePlans Oh I see! I’m definitely going to give this a try I think! I’m going to watch the other video of yours too where you’re planning & see what tips & tricks I can gather there 😜 Do you find it’s easier to know what to prioritize with the help from the FC system?
Hello Thank you for sharing This Video on Using The Franklin Covey Planner Question for you, When Weekly Planning Is it best to “ List Out “ all of my Tasks , Work Schedule , Enhancing Lives online business , appointments , events Then plan out my Roles , Big Rocks Then Schedule the week days ( Sun-Mon-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday -Friday-Saturday ) How is all of this connected in a process of planning . Thank you.
Hi, thanks for watching! I think it can be done whatever way works best for you but personally I try to plan out my rocks/weekly compass as that’s suppose to be the things most important to me. I’ll slot those into specific times and then put in the rest of my to dos being realistic about the amount of time I have each day if that makes sense!
Suppose I have to submit a document somewhere, in about 6 months, on a particular deadline. But I need about 10 days before that deadline, so that I can find the document and get it prepared, etc. Would it make sense to add a task for 10 days before the deadline. I suppose it would. But then what about 9 days before the deadline, i.e. the next day. I need the task to carry over so I don’t forget about it. Do I simply write it down again? Just thinking aloud here and wondering how I would replace a digital planner with a book like this. Any tips for the example I have given above? Thanks!
@@MomYePlans Hi. When the video displays "The Franklin Covey System" at around 0:12 I hear keystrokes. Did you record your keyboard or is that a stock audio clip of keystrokes? I was curious. I am partial to 'the Model M.'
This is such a great Video !!! , where can I find “ Undated Planning Pages “ , Yearly Monthly Calendar , Weekly planning. , Daily Planning Looking size 3 for a Small planner ( 3 3/4 by 6.5 ) for a 6 Hole Punch planner binder I want to save cost $ on planning each year , than buying expensive planners each year from ( DayTimer , Franklin Planner ) Thank You.
Hi! Thank you so much! You can check out the bundle in my shop here -> go.magik.ly/ml/1t20f/. Custom sizes are possible it would just be the bundle price +$5! You can message me on Etsy if you’re interested!
Don't worry about the length of this video. When a video is as organized as this one, it doesn't seem to be as long. If it's disorganized, then a 5 minute video is too long.
Well, it seems that you as many disredarded the most significxnt part of GTD, namely the higher horizons... That is exactly what people in Covey love so much (rightly so). But is is part of GTD, and more systematic, than in Covey.
@@MomYePlans, I suggest that you read pages 215-226 of the GTD book (pages refer to the 2015 second paperback edition - you can check the index, if you have another). Until you do, a few intro words: What people most often refer to as GTD (including superficial review videos), is usually the 5 basic steps (3 of converting inputs to actions/projects =planning work, 4th is a review, in which you regularly (weekly) go a bit higher to get/retain perspective (this is the "preventive maintenance" of the system), and the 5th is the actual "user manual" of the system). Higher Horizons refer to a view of our life (how our mind "constructs" it). the zeroth horizon is the ground level (actions), the slightly higher - first - are projects (stuff you want to achieve in up to a year - you can take them as the "big rocks" in Covey), the second are your areas of focus (roles in Covey), then longer term plans, visions are still higher (or longer on the time axis - mentioned very briefly and not subdivided in Covey - see his chapter on 3rd habit) and the highest (5th) are purpose and principles (those map partially to "values" in Covey). to make it simpler: when you learn to drive, first you need the technique to have the vehicle under control. This is a must, otherwise your crash. Still, without setting a goal, updating your position and reading a map, you cannot get anywhere, you stop at the first crossing. GTD is by far the best in having your vehicle under control. For reading a map, you have other alternatives and it is a matter of taste which one you use. If clarifying your values once is a good enough base to make sound decisions during your weekly planning (as Covey suggests), you can use it. In my experience life (and the world) moves much faster nowadays. If you need to create clarity/perspective and the next hour need to zoom to the very next action ANYTIME, GTD is the way to go. I admit, implementing it based on the book alone is a tedious task -not because it is complicated, but because a few habits need to be established...and it takes time. It is like reading an encyclopedia, few have the patience to read it past page 200...
Or you can Google it… there’s a massive volume of info on GTD online. David Allen wrote the original version of GTD in 2001, and it’s been updated since then.
