Today I am reviewing the newish set f 24 Gucai Classical Artist Tube watercolor paints: amzn.to/4e2plUq
These paints are traditional Chinese style paint making them suitable for painting on rice paper and other unsized or softly sized paper. The opaque quality of some colors allows them to show up on black paper. These paints are slow moving and resist blooms. the finish is matte but not chalky even in glazes.
Pros:
Price
Nice color selection (although lacking a cool yellow)
Easy to paint with
Rewets nicely
Dried down well in a palette (subtle cracking but did not fall out, results might differ in an arid climate)
Beautiful packaging
Cons:
All info is written in Chinese so I could not read if there were color names or pigment/lightfast info on the tubes.
No open stock
Slight chemical order when freshly poured out from tube.
slight binder separation on a couple of colors
Try a class! lindsayweirich...

I would love a tutorial of the cherry blossoms on the masa paper (new product to me) and of the peony on the baohong paper. I am liking the baohong watercolor block I recently purchased. Wonderful review. I love how you always find ways to make paints work. Like the opaqueness would have thrown many off, but it's a property you can work with. Actually I thought they might probably even work as gouache. My Schmincke Horadam gouache isn't fully opaque either and works very well. :D

Thank you for this review. As you know my wife and I watch your channel together over our morning coffee. When we watched the video review I was more interested in your opinion and watching you paint than the postings themselves. My wife however, that was a different story. She secretly purchased these for me because I paint on everything. From our old clothing to old bedding linen. I used to cut them up for workshop towels, but when one becomes constrained by a fixed income one does what one needs do. Anyway, thank you!!!! I love these. I wouldn't have them if not for you. I don't look for new paints. I like daniel smith and camlin watercolors from India. If I can't get those for some reason, art whale tube paints fill in until I can. I don't care to explore paints. Which means I generally miss out on great experiences like this paint. I don't think of them like watercolor though. For me they act more like a very wet thin gouache. Which is beyond expectations. I am in that stage of life where getting around is no longer easy for me. If I can't get there on my motorized chair I don't get there. So I can't really cart around easels, pochade boxes, canvases, etc. But I can fold up linen sheets cut to size, put in my pocket with a sushi roll thing I unroll for a hard board upon which to to clip my linen. These paints worked a delight on that. I can go thin to thick, transparent to opaque, wet to dry brush in the blink of an eye all without the paint flaking off and crumbling like a traditional gouache does. They allow for easy transport in a cheap plastic dollar palate. Without crumbling and falling out like a traditional gouache, and they aren't hard on my natural hair brushes when rewetting like a traditional gouache. I love love love these paints. Although I think of them more as a gouache than a watercolor. So, in short (haha) THANK YOU! Thank you for continuously bringing to light these inexpensive gems which makes it easier to continue doing what we old timers love to do. For when one lives in a fixed income, Even when they own their own home and have made the necessary sacrifices to not have to sacrifice in old age, one still finds oneself needing to compromise some pleasures for needs. Especially in today Healthcare and economic times. So again, thank you. It might be a job for you, but it's quality of life for others. You matter and the things you do matter to us. We all hope you are enjoying your vacation. I hope you video some of it so you can write it off. That way you can continue to bring us these little gems. Peace be with you and your family always.

Thank you, Lindsay those are such pretty colors and to see how the artwork turned out with the paints are excellent. Definitely more like a gouache kind of paint. IDK if that's typical of Asian paints. But, I'd be very curious to see what is in them. Maybe use google translate and read the insert to see if it's a dye or actual pigment based paints. Like I said, I'm not all that knowledgeable in oriental paints. These are really nice. Price point is good too. Thanks again for a full review of these paints. I learned recently from another RU-vidrs art channel that cracking means better quality in pigments and less fillers. Crayola watercolour doesn’t crack but some Daniel Smith do.
@thefrugalcrafter

Cracking can mean there us not enough humectant or binder or its loaded with chalky filler. Small cracks are fine but it's annoying if they fall out if the palette 😆

This is fun seeing the different colors. That's sad there was binder issues with those two colors and that one was so stiff like that and had so much air in it....crazy!. The Turner water color set I bought from Jerry's had that similar air pocket and binder issues that caused seperation of the mayan yellow, which I loved the color of. The entire tube was weird..

Gucai are the words meaning ancient color…so a retro branding. But the tubes look quite Western style. They’re probably not that authentic a Chinese brush painting formula. I mean, the ink sticks are finely ground pigment colors…opacity makes sense.

Hi Lindsay, I have a 24 tube set of "Winsor & Newton China Fine Watercolors" (they are not the regular Cotman made in China, it's specifically for the China market and has Chinese labeling on the tubes) and from what I saw online, they are manufactured like Chinese style watercolors but are only semi-opaque. Do you have any advice on using them? I have Asian watercolors (Shinhan PWC), but it seems these paints are oddly goopy and crack when dried on a palette.

Hullo Lindsay, I enjoyed working with the Gansai Tambi paints from Japan, I was attempting to make some Studio Ghibli pictures for my nieces bedrooms, (Aunties requests) Do you really think these are replacements for that line of paints? Without the sheen does it seem more like a gouache? About paint going bad? I know that there have been container ships off the coast of California for quite some time, backed up because of world events as well as the pandemic! I do wonder if this has effected products, sitting in those containers baking in the sun? I know food has gone bad quickly and some of those ships have gotten priority, but non perishable items sit for month after month! A friend who lives in Long Beach has said he watched ships move back in line and with no rhyme or reason to him, as far as he can see! Someone must be making decisions right? I have heard the port of L.A. is even worse off! I do enjoy watching your comprehensive reviews and I am reminded of many of my own practices when testing out a new product! It does take quite a bit to get me to switch. I painted with Grumbacher for years, as that is what my Gran started me out with! I was given some Daniel Smith paints, but when I went to purchase my own, I had several horrible "conversations"? that is the most pleasant word I can use to describe their treatment of me and my questions/problems. I still have tubes of their paints I just cannot use as I hate them! and I use that word HATE because that is the nicest one I feel I can use! Now I know many Artist that use their paints, but I will never even try them again. Denise Soden still likes them, but since she introduced me to DaVinci paints I have converted most of my palettes to that brand! I still have some Mission Gold, M. Graham, and one Grumbacher that I mistakenly ordered a box of 5 tubes of one color 20 years ago and I have still not used them up! It is Hookers Green and I still use it! There are more favorite colors/shades of greens now, but I still keep it handy! Well if you hung on through this lengthy comment I salute you and thank you for your time and excellent reviews. Be well and stay safe!

JUST started watching, so apologies if you already answered this, but any info on the binder? I hate using watercolors with animal hide glue binding, so I'm looking for that in particular. Was very happy to find out that Kissoh/Kissho switched to gum arabic across their entire range (have been in contact with their company...)

Also: it seems that both Paul Rubens and most of the aliexpress retailers for Paul Rubens have pulled these completely- I wonder what that is about?

@thefrugalcrafter 2 года назад
I believe they do, like a gelatin glue. I believe Kimberly Crick had that in her review. I mention it later in the full review. Gansai tambi do not have the animal binder either. Still most traditional western watercolors have ox gall as a dispersant and many papers still use a gelatin sizing. Luckily they are making use of byproducts that would go to waste from the meat industry and animals are not killed for these ingredients. But short answer is yes.
