We've been through at least one monarch since I promised to get the BMW GS on the channel but it's finally here! Join me for my very first impressions of the BMW R1250GSA - Europe's biggest selling big bike. Does it feel too heavy? Is it schporty? Do I prefer it to my KTM? Find out all this and more in my pre-review thoughts.

Apologies for the factual error - the Fokker Dr.1 was of course a triplane, not a monoplane. I was clearly getting my Fokker E.I Eindeckers mixed up.

I kind of have almost the same privileges as you, I can ride any bmw I want ( err except the 1000rr or M rr ) I currently have the R1250R naked : and like the GS it does everything exceptionally well, like if it took a Maths exam it would finish before anyone else but no one would want to hang out with it unless they could copy it’s answers 😂 but on a serious note the GS & The R1250r S1000 r are all absolutely amazing bikes. Whatever you tell them to do it’s done ✔️ no problem whatsoever, Great review btw 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼👍🏾

Two things you need to budget for when buying one of these... 1. BMW flip helmet so you don't have to remove the helmet for takeaway Caramel Lattes 2. Klim overland suit for sitting in cafes and avoiding the hazards of people spilling hot drinks on you

I was on the M3 once a while back on my Speed Triple Rs 1200 trying to overtake a white van in the 3rd lane doing 69.9 mph so obviously I just HAD to get passed him😂Anyhoo there was a chap in the middle lane on a GS and he just dropped a gear and breezed past both of us without even trying, the torque of that engine is incredible even though it feels a bit industrial it gets the job done without compromising anything else and that’s a feat of engineering imo 👍🏾

EDIT: finance approved! Had it for a week, and love this to bits. That bloody engine just pulls in a linear smooth fashion. There’s very little gaps in its delivery. Comfort and A1 suspension. I test rode one. It’s a bloody dangerous thing… I applied for finance 😂 here in Australia, for KTM, two dealership groups bring them in, and both have sub par backup if something goes wrong. With BMW far better backup, and I have a bloody good independent that I can go to if the dealership doesn’t play ball.

You are absolutely right. The GSA is a great bike to all type of terrains but it’s a joy to ride it on tarmac and doesn’t matter if the roads are in a not so good condition, the bike overcome every irregularities like a queen. It’s a reliable and comfortable big bike, and for the dimensions it surprises with a great maneuverability it really leans on corners and it is also a fun bike in my opinion . But the lack of excitement can be present because is difficult to have everything in a bike. I think that the next iteration of the S1000 XR in the M edition can be the BMW bike for grownups that will give us that extra excitement character that some of us find necessary and that we all know is not present on the GS. Good video, I concur with your general opinion on this bike. ✌️✌️

I was lined up to buy a 1290SAS which is brilliant and has major grin factor, but thought I may aswell test ride the GS to see what the hype is about... Immediately bought the GS after that, I was worried it would be a bit boring coming from my Tuono but god I was wrong, poke it with stick and its brilliant at scratching sketchy UK B-roads, the torque out of corners is addictive and it does the mundane stuff in-between flawlessly as well, just a very good all around package

I keep wanting to change my gs for something more exciting but the practicality keeps me coming back. I can throw big bags across the rear seat, I could move house with the pannier space and it also excels at carrying a pillion. However without earplugs in, it can sound a bit rattley.

@ReferenceFidelityComponents
I had the 1200GSA and while it partly lacked the fun factor that comes with more nimble bikes and with insane top end rush some others have, it can still be thrown into corners and remains planted and you can ride it out on a huge wave of torque. I sold mine and now ride an R1200RS sport which brings back some of the fun factor as it’s a bit shorter geared low down and lighter so pulls like a rocket in just about any gear plus makes for a better road bike. Most people will be able to flat foot the RS too. It’s everything you could want in a motorbike but more likely to keep your licence safer compared to the temptation of opening up more powerful bikes.

I just bought a 2023 GSA at a very good price since it was slightly used (4500 Km) and what sold me was the shaft drive, now many touring/off road bikes have shaft drive, none have the front suspension of the BMW, it is so smooth and doesn't jolt the bike on bad pavement. Since mine has all the bells and whistles, the suspension can be tailored to the road and ride on a cloud or become stiffer to handle twisties. I was only able to ride it a couple of days before winter so I'm glad all the groundhogs predicted an early spring 😀

I had both a GS (~10k km) and a 1290SAR (~5k km). I would say that the 1290 feels substantially better offroad, and yes, the "fun factor" of the orange is well above the one of the GS. BUT, after 4-6-8 hours in the saddle I don't need fun, I need comfort and confidence. As of the "overall build quality"... sorry KTM, you're good but the beemer is still several steps ahead.

Love my 1250 GS. Use it on and off road & have done 5,000 mile tours on it. I leaving on a 5 day Baja trip on it later this month. It simply gets it done. That said, I recently added a K1600 GT which absolutely eclipses my GS on long distance high speed tours. (600 mile plus days). Big speed, long range, comfortable, and great handling. That’s all it does, but it does it way better than my GS proving you need multiple arrows in the quiver.

I just became a 1250 owner myself. Its a grwat bike so much area under thr curve. The engine is amazing and torquey. The chassis is darty and fast when you push on the bars and rock solid stable when you srent. The ride is plush and smooth. The sest is comfy. And when you are just cruising you can prop you legs up on the crash bars, lean back, and just watch the scenery roll past. Also from what i read the reliability is very good. Basically it sounds like the worst thing that could happen is a shock starts leaking.

I wanted a GS. I thought I had the patience to wait until next year (either fork out for the 1300 or look for a deal on remaining 1250s). I got offered such a good deal on the 1290, I decided to plump for it now and I’m delighted I did. The happiness it creates in places I didn’t know existed is amazing and while I’m sure I’d have been happy with the GS too - I just don’t think it’s have been THIS happy! Nice vid, thanks 😊

Great all-arounder, yes there are other bikes with higher top speed, but for comfort and torque, it’s hard to beat. Even handles well! In this category, I am not looking for a hooligan bike. Perhaps, younger riders prefer ktm or Ducati , for me ,the Bmw is the one..

As a GSA owner, I really like the bike for comfort. Power and torque is plenty ... especially for UK roads! If I had more power, I'd likely have more points on my license and less money in my pocket. I test rode the K1600 GT a couple of days ago - lovely bike with silky smooth and awesome sounding engine, but not as comfortable as the GS/GSA. I say this of both the seat as well as the suspension. However, for 2-up touring with my missus I'd pick the K1600 GTL with the addition of highway pegs to get some leg stretch going for longer stints. Looks like your ride was in my neck of the woods.

Hey there! Glad I found someone that has driven both. I’m considering the XR and maybe the GS. I’ve driven a 23 XR and it’s amazing, although lacking a bit low grunt . Does the Gs brake and lean as well as the XR? And being only 32 yrs old, is it too soon to go to a GS? If you know what a I mean .
@spikodemiko5514
@spikodemiko5514 Год назад
@@konstantinos_iliadis Hi, I’m 59 so maybe I’m too old for an XR lol. My XR is a 2022 and it’s a lot sharper all round and more fun than the GSA. I accept that the GS would be comfortable for long tours but the XR is still all day comfortable if you can get on with the seat, which I have no problem with but I know some people don’t. I wouldn’t give up my XR for a GS unless the new 1300 is something special when it comes out👍

@@spikodemiko5514 XR and GS, totally different bikes. I owned the first bunch of the 1200GSs both regular and Adv and have ridden the XR. Just different categories. One is like an SUV while the other is closer to a lifted roadster (?), one might say. The XR is more in supermoto territory which the GS will never be.

I’m pondering whether to upgrade to a 1300 once released or get one of the remaining units of the 1250. The cost of a fully outfitted GSA is astronomical…but…maybe I should just to stop at fewer Starbucks along the way. 😏 Seriously, though, I’ll stick with the BMW for years to come. The ergonomics are best suited for me, the shaft drive is a key ingredient, and I have yet to find a rider, def. myself included, who uses the full range of HP and Torque. Is it as exciting as the 1290 KTM? Nope, but…neither am I. :)

Fair comments. I have its brother, the RT1250 because I don't need to pretend I'm going to take a leviathan off-road. The screen on mine is better that the GS it can still be a little blustery sometimes but I'm fine with that, it reminds you you're outside! The seat's extremely comfortable, it's fast, smooth and returns about 57 mpg. I did 400 miles on it last Saturday, no problem. The flat-twin is never going to be a classic hot-rod but as you get older you start thinking "so what?". That said, if KTM did shaft drive I would consider one because the V-twin is my favourite engine configuration and I admire what the company has done with it.
