Just got my Triple Black last November and it has spoiled me rotten. The balance, wind protection and comfort really superb. I love the quick shifter especially when I flick it from 1st to 2nd and it jumps forward a bit due to the low end torque like a bucking bronco. Love it!

Great review - I totally agree with the summary ... I currently have the 1250 GS and it's probably the best all-around bike out there but it doesn't quite have that "giggle" factor like I used to get from the S1000XR I traded for it. Of course, on the GS, I'm also not as concerned about losing my license or riding over my head like I was on the XR, which is why I traded. But I do miss the roar of the XR and giggles in my helmet it provided! Wish I could afford both!
@SamVBikes

Appreciate that Jim! Nice to hear an owners opinion! The XR is an awesome bit of kit! basically an S1000RR but in upright comfort. I had to spend a lot of time blurring out my speedo on my review of it haha! Would be lovely to have a few in the garage. Thanks for watching

I have had 8 x GS and never had a problem but I know others who have had lots of issues, I bought a KTM 1290 SAS and had so many electronic niggles and poor dealer support I sold it after 12 months and bought a Suzuki 1050 X T V-strom which doesn't have the wow factor but is 100% reliable and without the anxiety of wondering what next is going to go wrong.

I'm curious to know why you didn't wait to test-ride the new Tiger 1200s? Is there something that put you off of Triumph altogether?
@MarkATaylor
@MarkATaylor 2 года назад
@@craigfinnegan8534 The Tiger has been a great bike, super smooth triple engine and a very comfortable 2 up distance tourer. It's been faultless in terms of reliability also. The only criticism is that its a heavy bike and its all up top which can be a bit unnerving when manoeuvring at slow speeds 2 up with luggage. I'm sure the new Tiger will be a great bike as well but the GS has always been on my radar though and I'm just ready for a change as I've had the Tiger now for almost 3 years.
@craigfinnegan8534
@craigfinnegan8534 2 года назад
@@MarkATaylor You said the magic word - reliability (I didn't want to lead you on by asking about it directly). My own mechanic compares Triumph reliability to Suzuki, but his assistant warned me about parts delays (not sure if he meant even before Covid). I've owned a Super Tenere so I know what you're talking about with top heaviness (and with the ST, poor agility also). It looks like Triumph has done a good job with weight reduction on top with the upcoming upgraded Tiger 1200s, but we'll see once test rides are available. I've heard the quickshifters tend to fail on the Tiger 900s, and I'm bracing to hear the same with the 1200s. Why don't I go for a GSA instead of the Rally Explorer I'm aiming for (especially when the GS is getting a major upgrade to a 1300 next year)? Because I'm willing to pay a hefty purchase price but not keep paying excessively afterwards. There are other reasons but that's the main one. And there are other reasons I'm passing on the KTM SA and even the Africa Twin. With a reliable Yamaha right now (FJ-09 ie Tracer), whichever bike I buy next, it won't be a first year debut. Your reply was "confidence inspiring"...thanks for that. And happy, safe travels with your new GS.

I bought a 2019 Ktm super adventure R a couple years ago and just about to upgrade to the 2022 Ktm 1290 R. Both are great in their own. Many ppl say BMW R1250GS/A is the best in ADV motorcycle segment, in the past I never drove an BMW. I own a 2021 Africa Twin Adv Sports (AT-AS), so I had high expectations for R1250 GS compared to my AT. Today I got an opportunity to test-drive R1250 GS, honestly I didn't like it (maybe I'm used to my AT). Few thing I noticed 1. Handle-bar position - IMO AT has relaxed handlebar position compared to R1250. 2. Immediately I felt engine heat from the boxer engine, even after riding for multiple hours on AT I barely notice engine heat. 3. Foot pegs, shifter & rear brake position is more comfortable in AT than BMW. 4. Even though R1250 GS is heavier than AT ES, I feel the speed. While driving 75-80+ miles on Interstate, I felt the speed on BMW. On AT I don't feel that speed, 80+ miles engine is pretty relaxed at 4000/rpm. 5. Parallel-Twin engine/exhaust sound has more grunt/thump compared to the boxer engine. I really like how AT sounds. 6. Brakes are much more effective on BMW compared to AT. BMW excels in braking. Maybe I'm missing something on BMW, pls let me know if you think otherwise... No more second thought of trading AT for R1250GS, IMO for me AT-AS is more comfortable than BMW.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 года назад
It's nice to hear that you're solidified in the bike you bought. I love the AT too, the sound of it alone is enough of a reason to buy one haha. I suppose its different for everyone. Both are fantastic bikes but if it doesn't fit you, or suit your riding, then it's not for you. Same thing with my 1290 Super Adventure. Every time someone rides one, they either love it, or are annoyed by less significant factors which mean they couldn't live with it! You will get the die-hard fans which will tell you that you're wrong about everything, but still doesn't mean you should buy one if you didn't like it! Stick with your AT! Awesome bike! Thanks for watching

Some people don't understand why the gs quickshifter is not as good as other bikes,compared to the ktm for example, but after you look at the transmission of both bikes, you know why, the "ready to race" transmission have half of the material of the gs, so it will be way less durable, the gs is agricultural, but will last forever.

I have the R1200 GSA 2018, and the quickshifter drove me nuts. After 5 months i finaly figured it out. Or the shifts got used to me. From 1st to 2nd gear you have to shift as soon a possible. Before hitting the 3000, i know it feels weird but it works. It know defies the reason for having a quickshifter. From second to 3rd you have to preload and shift around 4500. The rest of the gears work pretty flawless. I use the quickshifter now almost exclusively. Second i found the Akrapovic adding more excitement because of the popping sounds, its a lot less boring now. But certainly not as exciting as other bikes.

Ahh that makes sense. To be fair, my Super Adventure is similar in needing to work out the best place to use the quickshifter, but it seems to be a bit smoother in general. I'll give your technique a go next time I ride a GS! Yes that Akrapovic exhaust definitely sounds nice!

The thing is:- The 1200 GS or the 1250 GS , to me are not only beautiful bikes as they’re really the most reliable bikes that I had the pleasure of riding and owning. These are machines that in my opinion, inspires confidence . Never had any Ducati Multistrada, so I can’t talk about it. But the problem is that, excepting that high torque zone of the engine, the bike lacks joy and consequently the rider too. Don’t get me wrong, I had two GS’s the 2018 1200 R and the 2020 1250 R, and I now own a 2021 1250 RT model and I love the bike like I took a big pleasure to have the other two BMW that I’ve just mentioned. But the nit pick is that after a while if you don’t get them on the dirt or at the off-road trails, they become pretty unemotional ridding bikes. The reason why I make an exception for the RT is because after having everything heated you can put up the windshield and listen to the engine work very clearly as you’re riding it, and that gives me an exceptional pleasure. I never had a GSA, but people who have, say that we can achieve the equivalent pleasure of riding on the road and on the highway, similar to what I just mentioned that I feel riding the RT. The only thing that the KTM SDGT makes me, sometimes remember of the BMW GS, happens, when I get, “out of the blue”, a message of GENERAL FAILURE warning, or any other red flag message on the digital screen and it makes me wondering if I would go on a big tour with this marvelous machine or not. Besides that, if the thrilling emotion of riding a two wheels machine with a 173 horsepower engine is not an important feature, my choice would be the 1250 cc BMW boxer engine, despite my conviction that it would be more close to perfection with some more horsepower pep. But definitely, the GS or the GSA are, as a whole, bikes of excellency and a lot of manufacturers should look up to it ( as I’m sure that they do) as a piece of art and engineering that those bikes are. Thanks for the video. I’ll be looking forward to your next ones ✌️✌️

Very very well put! That's pretty much exactly what I think too. They are cracking pieces of kit and If I needed a bike for a job such as daily commuting etc, that's where they really begin to shine. For me, my Super Adventure is a GS but with that personality injected into it. I've never had an issue with it and I'm now 14k miles in. Very occasionally I get a preload warning on the dash but that only seems to be when I have the bike loaded up but I'm not sat on it. I assume because the bike can tell there isn't a rider, but it's heavier than no rider so it thinks there's an issue. All that takes is a turn ignition off, and turn back on, and it's gone! Great to hear you're enjoying the RT! I took one around Yosemite (vids more recently on the channel) and it was a fantastic thing. Absolutely ideal for what I needed to do on it! Thank you for watching and safe riding

well, I can't get enough of the sound the 650 V twin on my strom does in the underground garage I park it in. Every time I start that bike I physically feel the sound vibrations and it's also an amazing farewell at the end of the ride when I come back in. And that's with the stock pipe and ear plugs. I pondered the NC for a while but I chose the strom and it's the 1st bike I ever owned. I had recently a tracer 9 GT as a loaner bike (mine was receiving a nice Ohlins upgrade, front and rear :) ). Amazing machine but somehow ... it just didn't fit and I can go over the objective reasons why but I could have get used to those, yet there was something off that I just couldn't put my finger on. I actually felt rather silly with myself for not liking it more but ... yeah, nothing I can do about that.

I'm just 5'6" and ride a 2018 1200GS. Standard suspension and with a comfort seat. I rode a sport touring for a number of years until it started hurting my wrists too much. Test drove a GS and after 10 meters knew it was for me. I had tried a 2020 MultiStrada, loved it too, a bit shorter, but never could figure out the weird mode settings. Plus the shaft drive made up my mind. Ah, the shaft drive. At 65 years old that plus the comfort and do it all capacity made the decision easy!!

Cool content as always! I've had a 1290 SAS 2022 since April and I had so much MTC failures/random limp modes! Same as your buddy with the s1000xr, spent more time at dealership than on the road (issues popped right after first service @ 1000km). Couldn't agree more with you, comes with the ownership. Doesn't mean the brand sucks as a whole, could just be just bad luck, faulty/bad quality sensors due to covid in China & sourcing difficulties, multiplexing issues. I decided to switch for a 1250GS triple black. I will miss that LC8 dearly :( especially if I happen to buy a faulty GS like your buddy's XR 😂I'm quite afraid of Austrian karma

I did a video on motorcycle recalls of 13 brands in the U.S. from 2016 thru 2021. BMW had the most recalls and 2nd most customer complaints over those almost 6 years. It doesn't necessarily mean they are unreliable but it is an indicator of some recurring issues that aren't been being resolved quickly. The data comes from the NHTSA data base the monitors and tracks recalls on cars and motorcycles for the U.S.
@SamVBikes

Interesting to know! I'll have a look into it. I think the way BMW deals with the issues via customer service is great. Normally you can get a loan bike and they will get onto it immediately. Better than a number of other manufacturers. Thought it was worth a mention. Thanks for watching

Some manufacturers are issuing more recalls than they have complaints and indicate they are proactive on addressing problems like Aprilia, Suzuki and Moto Guzzi. Others like Triumph, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Royal Enfield are in the sweet spot of balancing recalls against complaints. BMW is struggling with balancing a very high number of complaints and the most recalls. While Ducati also has a high number of recalls but pretty much middle road on complaints so they seem to be efforting to correct problem. Harley also a high number of recalls but unlike Ducati their customer complaints are through the roof which suggest their handling of the recalls is poor from the customer's standpoint.

@@flatcapcaferacer Thanks for taking the time to write all that. As a research-aholic, I'm fascinated by that kind of knowledge and I hope a decent amount of viewers read what you wrote also. God knows I'm constantly coming across questions about ownership issues on various forums. It's understandable when many guys could go broke on an $8,000 bike, much less a $24,000 bike (even without the issues after purchase). As an interested non-expert, customer satisfaction surveys from one year to another seem to me equal parts predictable to unpredictable - some manufacturers are consistently low or high in ratings, while others rise and fall. One of the most enlightening experiences I've had with researching ownership issues isn't online, but during a slow time in a (relatively) honest dealership that sold for three different manufacturers (KTM, Yamaha, Suzuki). The things both the salesman and the office manager told me were eye-opening, with customer stories to back them up. They slammed KTM on reliability, hard to work on, and warranty issues, praised Yamaha, and were wary about Suzuki. So to anyone reading this who wants it from the horse's mouth, find a dealership that's equal parts bored and honest, and don't look like you're ready to buy soon. It might just steer you away from bankruptcy and into wisdom. Thanks again for the perspective, Moto-Bro. I'll check out your video.
@flatcapcaferacer
@flatcapcaferacer 2 года назад
@@craigfinnegan8534 thanks Craig. Initially I just spent a week gathering raw numbers and did a video on that but I started digging deeper on the complaints and recalls do get a better perspective. So I did the 2nd video which is this link I sent that had the raw numbers but also some breakdown of where the recalls were occurring. I read the 2016 Consumer Reports motorcycle satisfaction survey years ago and I was surprised with some of their conclusions. They asked an open ended question about "have you had a major problem with your bike in the past 3 years?" Not a bad question except they didn't define what a major problem was. If you bought a $25,000 BMW the customer might view an engine management light as a major problem whereas a owner of a $5000 Royal Enfield probably would not. I did this because it interested me and made the video because maybe someone else might be interested.

I test rode this bike before putting in an order on my 2022 KTM 1290 SAS. GS was my dream bike but it really let my expectations down. Coming from a KTM 790 Adv, it was very sluggish and noisy for me (both the engine and wind buffeting). My 1290 is much smoother, has better wind protection, more flickable, and $5k cheaper. Hi thanks for the video, I'm a first time viewer of yours and have subscribed. I have to take issue with you though on one point and that is reliability. Like you I have heard many tales of woe from BMW riders and personally I don't think it is acceptable at all. Don't get me wrong I love beemers, I've been driving BMW's for over 20 years and never had any serious issues with any of them, so why should the bikes be any different? As you say they are a high end product that people pay a lot of money for, so I would expect the engineering and reliability to be reflected in that price tag. After all the Japanese manufacturers manage to do it for much less money. I would love to own a GS or maybe even an RT but there would always be that doubt in my mind over reliability and that is what stops me. So until they get it sorted I for one will be sticking to Yamaha a brand that has given me total reliability for over 30 years. Thanks again and keep up the good work! 👍

Morning Andy! Thank you for the subscribe! I agree with you! I really don't understand how premium bike manufacturers can have so many issues with their bikes. KTM, BMW, Ducati, Triumph etc all do but it seems something we have to put up with! I know that there are only a handful of people from a huge number who get the unresolvable issues, but it seems that almost every premium bike has a number of recalls or small issues which could have been ironed out in testing. I can only assume that the budgets for testing and development isn't anywhere near as high as the cars due to volume of sales. Still... it's incredibly irritating when you spend knocking on £20k on a bike for it to have simple unforeseen issues! Having said that, I know a few of the brands famed for their poor reliability are making a concerted effort with each new model they bring out so we can only hope that it gets better! Mode button adjusts the suspension settings along with engine, traction, abs.

As is possibly elsewhere in the comments, to change the suspension it's simply click up on suspension switch, then click again to choose min auto max. As per other comments, I'm not quite sure where this unreliability factor around the GS is coming from, other than (its true) the ESA. I've owned two GSs and frequented the GS forum for the past 6 years, and I'm not seeing it. Some talk about paint finish, but you get that a lot about other bikes and brands as well, and you sometimes have to (possibly not fairly) question how the finishes have been looked after, intentionally or otherwise.

Yes! I worked it out after a few minutes but it wasn't incredibly clear. Just was worth noting most people would need showing how to change it, rather than it being self-explanatory. Regarding the reliability - it was more a comment on a few people I know of, and have seen in social media seem to be having issues with the bikes breaking down, having faults with start up etc. I go into it more toward the end about it likely being just coincidence that they have been in the media/people I know. Any bike of this level and with this much tech will no doubt be some issues as there is a huge amount to go wrong. BMW tend to deal with these problems pretty quickly so I doubt many would jump on the forums to vent as it get's resolved. Thanks for watching!

@@SamVBikes Agree with/understand all that! I thought it was a very balance review and gave a sense of the GS on-road experience. Enjoyed it. Happens that you also rode the best looking version and colour as well :-) And whilst I'm a GS rider I very much understand and appreciate why others would go for the adv1290 (or indeed the MS).

Thank you bud! I do love the GS, but It's not crazy enough for me yet! If I could afford a 2nd bike that scares me at the weekend, it would definitely be one of my first choices! Thanks for watching!

I think the reliability thing is a % game. when you have the biggest selling bike in the country for the Last 15 years I suppose a few breakdowns is the normal.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 года назад
Very true. % might be exactly the same or lower, but much higher volume of bikes. Good point

Would love to hear the comments as I have an F 800 GS Trophy at the moment and I would appreciate some heads up on the new Triumph Tiger 1200 GT or PRO, I have a test drive planned in next week on both just see how they perform. What’s your experience with the Tiger ? Any pros or cons our willing to share would be appreciated
@SamVBikes

I am yet to get my leg over the new Tiger 1200 because I've been so busy, but have ridden the 900 Rally Pro and GT Pro. They are fantastic bikes. I'd be wary of the explorer being too top heavy, but in general I think they will sell very well. Look for a review by Tim Rodie, he's done a very comprehensive vid on it!

Also the GS is a few grand more than the 1290 and hasn't got adaptive cruise control.. I've owned 3 GS s and I'm now in my second 1290 sa....the KTM is much more fun and always brings a smile to my face..
@SamVBikes

Very good point! I reckon the Adaptive cruise is coming on the teased 1300GS though!

I owned a 22 1290 SAS. And was sick at my decision. Traded it for a 1250 GS. And am so much happier. The KTM was like an assembly of really good parts acting together as a machine. The GS was just so much more refined and like a single unit. It’s just better choice , for me. Plus I love the shaft drive and the low weight of the boxers. Not to mention , the hot heads of the ktm cooking my inner legs.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 года назад
The shaft drive would be a welcome addition! I don't have any issue with heat on the legs, unless I've got the heated seat on haha! Both are awesome bikes, but I think I just need a bike that scares me a little haha! Thanks for watching

No ASBO factor could help save your licence with Plod. A GS can rock past at velocity and it seems to have less drama than in line fours for obvious reasons. My new 2022 GSA Rallye is getting built in Berlin and arrives first week in March yahooo!!
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 года назад
Agreed! And the lack of diving from the suspension helps to look innocent when you slam on the brakes because you see plod in the distance haha! Congrats on the new bike!

Agreed, I'd rather have problems with a BMW as you know the service you will get. My KTM dealer is very good, but I know people have issues with theirs all over!

Had three but now ‘downsized’ to a 950 Multi V2S, so much better for road use. Lighter, sounds far better and a quick shifter that works at all revs, to be honest I wouldn’t have another, the Multi is a far better ownership experience.
