When a movie is as massively successful as Beverly Hills Cop, a sequel is a given. After all, it was a movie that outgrossed Ghostbusters to become the top movie of 1984, despite an R-rating. With Murphy’s career at a fever pitch, the actor did something unusual - he took two years off from movies to cut an album! His comeback movie The Golden Child, made some series money, but nowhere near what Beverly Hills Cop did, so Paramount ordered a sequel that would be the blockbuster moneymaker they needed. But, Beverly Hills Cop 2 would be different from the original, with a slicker director in Tony Scott, a bigger budget, more action, and perhaps a little less charm than the original, which we dig into in this episode of Revisited.

Beverly Hills Cop 2 is actually pretty entertaining. The funniest bit was when Judge Reinhold yells at the end after the final battle. It’s the first time he’s assertive with his boss

The funniest part for me is when Axel held up the truck driver right before climax shootout. Axel asks the driver if he likes rap, the driver says that he does but then Axel asks why he isn't smiling if he likes it. The driver then smiles, Axel then makes him sing yo baby yo. Definitely the funniest scene.

Anytime Judge Reinhold yells in this movie and in the first one is funny. I don't remember if he yelled in part 3 I'll have to revisit it. I do remember he had an office of his own though.

This movie was actually more fun as an action movie than the first. The opening scene alone with the robbery sequence, Tony scott direction and the whole opening song/title sequence with the introduction of Eddie murphy was amazing

I love the first, but I personally think the second is actually better. Axel, Billy and Taggert hanging out being boys puts it over the edge for me. I just wish 3 could've been as good.

The second Beverly Hills Cop has the advantage of not having to waste its runtime establishing characters because the first film already did that. So there was more time to spend just having character building moments adding depth to the chemistry between the three main characters.

Someone finally said it. Actually, I find this installment to have a much better balance of bigger action & comedy than the first. Always preferred it. Except it's a tragedy we'll never get to see it's original long cut. Happens too often. Same with Another 48 Hours!

I actually probably prefer BH Cop 2 despite it not being as well received by critics. I think it has aged better and looks better. Tony Scott the director had a huge hit the year before with Top Gun so that played a part in Part 2 having a much larger budget. The action was better in BH Cop 2 and I thought the chemistry between Foley, Taggart, and Rosewood is what makes the film. I think it was just as funny and politically incorrect at times. It was a true buddy cop film for guys. Again, I really like both movies but re-watch part 2 more. The only thing in BH Cop 2 that doesn't make much sense is how the cops all had become such great friends between the first film and second and even went on a fishing trip together. I guess they probably had to stay in touch after the huge shootout in the first film to file their reports and keep their stories straight.

To be fair, even they are at odds with each other, most of the characters were genuinely nice to each other. Foley bought the LAPD cops food and they footed his hotel bill for helping them out

I'll never forget how big of a deal it was that anyone saw this opening weekend. I told a girl I knew that I saw it and her response was "you got IN??" like it was such an accomplishment. Too funny

This is a fun popcorn movie and a worthy sequel to the original. But I think that they missed the mark but not making this (or any other sequel afer it) a reversal of the concept and have Taggert and Rosewood as fish out of water working with Axel in Detroit.

One of my favorites. Not as funny but the stakes were higher. You were already invested in the character. Back then the comedy wasnt as necessary for round 2.

As one of the few people who saw the sequel before the original, I find the sequel a better movie overall. 🏆 Honestly, I just wish there were more buddy cop comedies being made, like "The nice guys", "Hot fuzz", "Bad boys for life", "21 jump street", "Kiss kiss bang bang"... oh wait, looks like this genre is still alive! 🎭

Beverly Hills Cop 2 is a classic. Directed by a great director, great scenes and just awesome. It's like Jaws 2, Jaws 2 is fantastic, but the first Jaw is perfect - BHC 2 is like that.

I was a kid when this came out and it was so wildly popular that I had no idea it wasn't considered a great movie. I think I rewatched a number of times after I taped it from a broadcast airing back in the early 90s or late 80s but have not revisited it since. Funny how things like that happen. Had you asked me 20 minutes ago if BHC2 was a great movie I would have said yes.

I think it's a perfect sequel! The stakes are higher but the laughs keep coming too. It builds on what we already knew and any sequel worth anything has to do at least that, I think. Back when these movies were released most people just wanted a decent continuation of the story (which we had to wait years for most of the time!) and Beverly Hills Cop II did a better job at that than a lot of other sequels of the era. The third installement however... I seriously wonder what Beverly Hills Cop IV will be like? 🤔

Beverly Hills Cop 2 was released on May 20, 1987, in North America and October 16, 1987 in the UK. That's a huge gap.

I know this is a really, really hot take - but as much as I love BHC 1 and 2, the 3rd movie is still my favorite. Is it good, no. Is it as good as either of the original movies, no. But I just love the odd pacing and Eddie Murphy's comedy is still awesome (even if he phoned some of it in, let's face it) AND Judge Reinhold is just awesome in it. Plus, Bronson Pinchot came back! Sadly we didn't get Ronny Cox etc. Also, the "bad guys" were kind of lame, but I still liked them, and the literal ARMY of goons they had. The set pieces were fun (the ferris wheel for example) and that weird, fun, ending.

What makes these Stallone jokes even better is the fact that Jürgen Prochnow (known as the Captain Lieutenant "The Elder" in "Das Boot") was Stallone's German voice actor in the first two Rocky films, but then got replaced by Thomas Danneberg (who also voice acted Arnold Schwarzenegger, of course he himself could speak German and dub himself but I guess because of his Austrian origins, he rather speaks with that accent than standard German, however nowadays actors like Christoph Waltz dub themselves despite their accent) who retired in 2018 so Prochnow dubbed him again in Creed II, Escape Plan 3, Rambo Last Blood and Expendables 4.

HARD DISAGREE!!!! This one is funnier IMO! Eddie Murphy was dialed up to 11 here & his one-liners are still funny. Plus, his chemistry with Reinhold, Ashton & even Cox was stronger. And that soundtrack! Absolute 80s fun! This is my favorite of the 3, & one of my favorite movies in general.

Nothing wrong with Part 2 at all. It looks better than the first one and has more action. Plus, I never got the feeling or idea it was a rehash. He simply gets called back to LA to help a friend there. Foley is loyal. The third film should have taken the same approach.

The second movie is way funnier, and more action packed than the first. The first one was more of a beloved hit, but I love the chemistry of the main trio, and Eddie Murphy had way funnier lines in the sequel. Very fun 80s action comedy, with a lovable cast. Rosewood is way more laid back and a gun totting cop, while Taggert is a stubborn burnt out detective who bounces off the other two so organically. One of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen hands down.

The truth is that 1 and 2 both very good. I would go see BHC 2 after my shift at UPS loading the trucks at 8/hr back in the summer of 1987. The theater was nicely air conditioned. Good times and lucky for me I don't work at UPS.

Beverly Hills Cop 2 is very heavily action oriented as is Scott's background. The humour shoe horned isn't as strong as the first movie, but being the 2nd highest grossing movie of 1987. It is a lot better than Beverly Hills Cop 3.

Beverly Hills Cop II is my favorite in the trilogy and my favorite film by Tony Scott after The Last Boy Scout. I also really love how Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold and John Aston have more of a three musketeers dynamic going on. You can really tell that their friendship has grown since the first film and would go out of their way for each other.

It's a while since I've seen both movies but I do remember loving both movies. They definitely had a different blend of action and humour but were both really good films. I think being different was a reason they worked. Not repeating the same type of jokes of the same action beats. Foley was still Foley for me.

I always liked the movie, but I was always confused by a couple of plot points. They start calling them "the Alphabet Crimes" after only the first crime. There's either some missing explanation or they just glossed over it. Bogomil's daughter seems like a character added after a re-write. When Axel calls the BHP and they patch him through to the hospital where she just magically answers the phone. That's not how phones work. Especially in 1987. Lastly, I always laugh when, in a cutaway, Eddie says: "So you ARE the new Chief of Police!" Like a test audience didn't get it so they did that quick pick-up with him.

I do like part 2. But what made the first so good was the Fish out of water elements, particularly in the first half of the film. Bogermill and Taggert couldn't wait for Axel to go home after the first film. In Part 2 they're all buddy buddy - I never really got that. A better story would have been to flip it and have Rosewood and Taggert visit the tough streets of Detroit. and have them be the fish out of water.

I really enjoyed the sequel and had lots of fun with it. However, the original has the much better script and pacing, in my opinion. Ultimately, I think the first one is better.

I agree. Part II was OK, but is very outclassed by the 1st part. It wasn't as funny as part 1 and the comedic bits went on a bit too long making them less funny. The action was cool but everything else felt like step down. Also, for as much crap as part 3 gets, it had better and funnier parts than part 2.

Why the hell do people act like Siskel and Ebert's opinions mean more than anyone elses? No one outside of America and Canada care about them. They were put on tv so people were made to believe that their opinions carried a lot of weight just because they were on tv, so then the viewers made their opinions carry weight. They were NOT good film critics.
