With Eddie Murphy returning to the throne of Prince Akeem in COMING 2 AMERICA, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at the final collaboration between Murphy and the director of the first COMING TO AMERICA, John Landis, in the sequel that killed Axel Foley: BEVERLY HILLS COP III!
As the mid-90s saw both Eddie and John in the midst of a career slump, Murphy decided to make up with Landis after their tensions during COMING TO AMERICA's production for another sequel to the action-comedy smash which established Eddie as one of the biggest stars of the 80s. But instead of making up for the lesser quality of BEVERLY HILLS COP II, the third installment ended up cutting off all the edges that made Axel F. such a beloved action hero, as Murphy insisted on playing Axel as a more mature and less wiseass character, while secretly suffering from depression that'd been brought about from Eddie's last couple of box office disappointments.
So no matter how much Landis tries to have fun with Axel searching for his boss' killer in a Disneyland-style amusement park, his star's lack of enthusiasm puts a damper on the woefully few moments of decent action and funny comedy. And although the returning Judge Reinhold and Bronson Pinchot try to bring back the magic of the first film, they can't save this series from a lackluster finale which to this day has kept Axel Foley suspended from the force. Fingers crossed that the upcoming BEVERLY HILLS COP IV on Netflix doesn't have Eddie fighting crime alongside himself in a female fatsuit.

Unfortunately at the box office it was, which is a shame I saw a little bit of the movie and I can tell that Eddie put his heart and soul into the project. I totally understand why he was depressed at the time when he was filming Beverly Hills Cop III.

I think what really hurt Beverly Hills Cop was not having John Ashton in it. The trio of Murphy, Reinhold and Ashton worked perfectly as they fed off of each other and cracked wide ass jokes while having great action scenes. Ashton did a great job of being the blue collard cop who truly cared about Axel as a cop and friend.

Absolutely. Ashton was a crucial part of what made the movies work. I think having a third member there to "replace" Ashton also hurt because it simply made his absence more apparent to the audience.

Such an interesting story behind the man who played Inspector Todd. Gil Hill was the real life head of the Detroit Police Homicide Section, President of the Detroit City Council, and even ran for Mayor of Detroit. He also found himself the target of an FBI Investigation for obstruction of justice in the murder of a 13-Year-Old Boy.

@@johnnyfavorite1194 I remember hearing back then the first BHC came out how Inspector Todd (Gil Hill) was a real life Detroit cop, which I always thought made his scenes that much better and even more believable. Gil's legal troubles that later followed were a big disappointment to his fans. In addition to what you mentioned, the FBI also accused Gil of asking to be paid to facilitate various financial crimes. I don't know if any of this was true but it's no surprise given Detroit's seedy reputation. Gil's portrayal in BHC 1 and 2 was superb and you'd never know he wasn't a seasoned actor because he was a natural.

Word. BHC 3 is not that bad - in fact, I think it's pretty damn entertaining. it's not reinventing the wheel or anything - but it's a solid third entry in the franchise.

I actually like 2 more than the 1st one. Partly because of Axel's quick-witted ruses & we get to spend most of the movie with Axel, Billy & Taggart together. Plus Inspector Todd & Sidney Bernstein (RIP Gilbert Gottfried).

@@richiemc6170 plus how Axel Foley not know Taggart had retired. Axel, Billy and Taggart where all pals....both Billy and Axel have a picture of the three of them on there desk's. And how did Axel not know bogomil had retired. You could put it down to bad writing and that is the problem with Beverly Hills Cop 3. The writers clearly did not understand the heart of Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2 is the friendship between Axel, Rosewood and Taggart. The comedic banter between the three of them. The way they bounce of one another. Take one out you change the dynamic and it's no longer funny. And yes BH3 does have a couple of F-bombs but it's tone way down compared to BH1 & 2

@@leejohnstone2285, it is watered down. Hell, look at how Inspector Todd was watered down in this. One of Axel's greatest skills in his arsenal wasn't utilized: his quick wits & ability to come up with ruses on the spot. Axel wasn't funny at all in this.

@@jeremyzak654 Awssome! Yeah, like I said, it’s a fun movie and I just don’t understand all the hate it gets. It’s not an action a second type of film but it’s still enjoyable, and Timothy Carhart does a great job playing the smarmy villain you love seeing Axel take down. BTW, I didn’t realize until recently that Carhart also played the fellow orchestra member Sigourney Weaver is walking with by the fountain when Bill Murray comes by to talk to her in the first “Ghostbusters”.

@@SmoothCriminal12 Kids died on John Landis set because he refused to obey child labor laws not to mention he was known for being a notorious jerk and his son Max Landis was apparently involved in a weird sex cult where he violently sexually assaulted girls wanting to be in the industry and made everyone wear secret colors or something to that effect or they would be punished.

There was something very cheap TV movie about 3. It didn't have any style like the first two movies. Possibly because it did not have directors like Tony Scott back nor Jerry Bruckheimer producing part three.

Funny summary. Cop 3 was funny and more family friendly than the other films. There are plenty of jokes and more hand to hand combat and stunts than the prior movies. The tone is lighter. My main complaint is that the final fight should've been longer. I enjoyed Cop 3. It's definitely underrated.

He isnt tracking someone who murdered one of his friends for the third time in this film. Bogomill isnt murdered in the 2nd film. And not a surprise he investigates it to Beverly Hills since it happens in BH. Also, he may go to BH in the 3rd, but he doesnt track them to BH. Its much closer to Anaheim, which isnt a surprise since it revloves around the Disneyland like stand in. So, going to Cali isnt really a big deal. But overall the movies trash anyhow. Like it or hate it tho... 2 is far from a rehash of the first.

I was heartbroken when the series was announced, the pilot shot...and the studio bailed, throwing the project under the bus. The famous Detroit Lions jacket was given a fuller-cut chenille/leather/wool version (with a full zip that kills the '80s vibe) and release by the NFL shop...which I managed to score. I was elated...cos it was a screen-accurate match. I found three pics of BTS that show eddie and Brandon wearing it. Netflix gave us "My Name Is Dolemite", so I am eager to see how this project goes!

A big reason why this film was a dissapointment is because rated R films weren't as profitable as they were back in 80s.Teenagers were the big ticket buyers in the mid 90s,so the studios only wanted to release PG and PG-13 films.Films like The Lion King and Forrest Gump were hugh Box Office hits.

Cop 3 was funny and had plenty of action. Harlem Nights, Distinguished Gentleman and Norbit we're all financially successful films. Metro was a funny action film and it was underrated. Cop 3 was financially successful and it earned over $100 million dollars on a $50 million dollar budget.

I saw it 10 or so years ago. It's not that great, but I kind of liked it. It's a fun call back to old school screwball comedy of the 1930s, and Stallone is fifty times better in it than STOP OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT. Also a great supporting cast: Tim Curry, Marisa Tomei, just to name a few. But I can see why so many disliked it and didn't have a chance at the box office.

Cop 3 has more action than the first two films combined. Foley has more fistfights in this is film and his humor is still there it's just more subtle. Randle is great as his love interest.

The bad guys really can’t shoot anything in that movie. Axel hiding behind a bench, axel turning his back to a vilain, axel in wonderworld making a phone call, the cops falling when they rushed into the shop.

That weird ass Annihilator 2000 gun was basically the set piece of the movie to describe how bad and out of place this third movie in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was. But the whole action taking place in a kids theme park was definitely cheesy 90s action movies.

I saw this at the drive-in with my parents as a kid. I had never seen the other movies in the series, but it was a mostly family-friendly romp through an amusement park. I only have fond memories of this movie from growing up. I understand as an adult why people didn't love it, but as a kid, much like the movie Hook, it holds a beloved place in my heart.

Beverly Hills Cop III was literally watching Eddie Murphy set fire to his career on screen in slow motion. I remember seeing it in a theatre and it got no laughs. Not one. God damn sound of crickets. It was one of the most awkward things I’ve ever sat through.

As a lot of folks did, I fell in love with that Detroit Lions letterman's jacket from BHC 2. Cobbled my own together. NFL shop even made an official release of this jacket, which was limited enough to spawn a load of knock-offs. (yes I was lucky and have one). That being said, If foley had worn that jacket in the first one...my first one would be my favorite. As it stands, BHC 2 I'm more familiar with...but MAD magazine ruined the suspension of disbelief for me! BHC 3...nice jacket.🙃

Fun Fact: Wonder World was the real life amusement park Great America over in Santa Clara, CA. The ride that he saved those kids from was the birds cages. I got ride in them twice before it was taken down in the early or mid 2000s
