Beverly Hills Cop: Is It Eddie Murphy's Best Movie?

The heat is most definitely on in this episode of revisited, as we’re looking back on a quintessential piece of 1980s action / comedy movie-making, that helped to launch the career of American funnyman Eddie Murphy into the stratosphere. That’s right folk, with the much anticipated fourth entry in the series on the horizon, we’re taking a retrospective look at the Axel F infused goodness that is Beverly Hills Cop. OK, well, I guess part four isn’t necessarily ‘much anticipated’ across the entire movie-world, but Eddie Murphy has had somewhat of a career resurgence in recent times and apart from a slightly tame and disappointing Coming 2 America, and the relative appeal of You People, he’s made a positive return the spotlight. Part four is currently slated, as per time of writing this video, for 2024 but there have been whispers about it possibly surfacing on Netflix, or perhaps even theatrically first, later in 2023. Of course, this is all conjecture as there’s no word from the streaming giant as of yet, but if Netflix decide the test screenings have been strong enough, and they can get it locked and loaded in time, then who knows. For now though, sit back, enjoy your prawn salad sandwich and pop a couple of bananas in a tailpipe as we look back on the endlessly quotable Eddie Murphy classic, Beverly Hills Cop!

People who weren’t there will never know how big this movie was..The soundtrack popped off!.Eddie became the biggest star in the world and would soon even have a hit record!..Then Eddie would star in like 20 movie flops in a row(although I always liked Golden Child) and come back down to Earth

Eddie wouldn't star in that many flops right away. What are you even talking about? Beverly Hills Cop 2, Coming to America, and Raw (if you count standup at the box office) all made serious bank at the box office. Even Anther 48 hrs made a profit even if it was considered to be a bit of a disappointment by the studio. Even the Golden Child that you talked about turned a profit even if it wasn't highly rated or well liked. Harlem Nights also turned a profit even if the gross was smaller than expected by the studio and received bad reviews at the time though has since become a bit of a cult classic. Dude had a bit of a slump in the early 90's before bouncing back with major success at the box office with Nutty Professor and Dr. Dolittle. You'd think dude was dying at the box office during that period with the way people talk about his career trajectory.

This is such an amazing film and it's very underrated. Perfect balance between comedy, action, thriller and heart. Murphy was such a natural lead and had some real presence given his very limited acting at that point. An amazing supporting cast too as you pointed out. The soundtrack to the movie is also iconic. The perfect storm.

This and BHC 2 are fantastic. I would say this and 48 hrs are his best films. The scene at the strip club where he's vibing to the music but also watching the guys about to hold up the place is prob my favorite part. Captures axel foley perfectly as a character

It’s definitely one of the best movies of he 80s!! For sure and reinvented the cop genre Perfect blend of action and comedy can’t say it was Eddie Murphy’s best movie but it’s definitely up there top 5 to 3 for sure I can ignore other movies like coming to America, trading places, Boomerang,Distinguished gentleman dream girls!! But this movie definitely put Eddie Murphy on the map I made him a household name still can’t believe they’re going to do a fourth one after all these years just leave it alone and let the series end.

Some.say "Raw" made "Eddie Murphy's" career shot Str8 to the heavens. Maybe so....but me I personally I think "Beverly Hills Cop" was the movie to do that & here's why.....first things first "BHC" was so iconic...with the opening "Herbie Hancock" theme score to the 80's fashions, 80's lingo & sense of humor. Also that movie start other actors in the movies careers such as "Judge Reinhold", dude that played " Balkie" Bronson something ...Even my girl "Brigette Neilson" & "John Ashton". The "Police Chief" in Detroit was the ying to Eddie's Yang.... hilarious, a foul mouth always pissed off chief barking orders at "Axel". You can't find comedy like that anymore. "Mikey" played by "James Russo" this time around played a cool but careless guy stealing barebonds which gets him unalived. Then we have the lovely "Jamie Summers". The level headed cutie that assists "Axel" into taking down "Victor Matlin". Unfortunately after the 2nd part the franchise didn't live up to what make this movie legendary....if you grew up in the 80's this has to be in your top 5. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

This movie was REALLY good. It's the perfect 80's cop film. The soundtrack is just perfect. But for me, what makes it great, is that it's believable. Characters don't act like morons, they're all serious cops. With different methods and backgrounds, but they feel vulnerable and realistic. Nowadays cop movies always feel goofy. Too much jokes, not enough details. It's like Hollywood lost all touch with reality

1980’s Eddie Murphy was the best. 48hrs, BHC 1+2, Golden Child, Trading Places all great films. His two stand up specials during this time are fantastic too. He lost his edgy humour in the late 90s for more family friendly movies. The Nutty Professor, Mulan and Shrek showed this. Dolemite is my name was the closest I’ve seen Eddie get to his edgy humour from the 80’s. Coming 2 America just missed the mark completely for myself.

His best movies were that original 80s run with 48 Hours, Trading Places, BH Cop 1 and 2, and Coming to America. Then he sort of lost the plot and/or only wanted to do leading man romantic dramas or big budget family movies in the 1990s. The 80s films was where its at though for him at least for my tastes.

When Sly Stallone was attached to the movie, he made it too much of straight up action movie. He would later use his unused script ideas in 1986 Cobra. Producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson really wanted Eddie Murphy after his big breakout with 48 HRS in 1982. Beverly Hills Cop took Murphy to new heights and for 25 years until 2003 held the record for the highest R Rated movie 🍿. It's an instantly quotable classic with lines such as "Look Man, I ain't falling no banana 🍌 up my tailpipe." & "This is the nicest & cleanest Police Car I have been in my life....."

Beverly Hills hasn’t changed much really it never seems to change. The first bit of the movie in Detroit is so dated and gritty. His old friend who turns up is a cliched Italian American wise guy, there was one in every movie back then. Apart from this, the movie is very slow and pretty boring. It’s saved by some good actors who have great chemistry. You have to remember this was years before the die hard and lethal weapon templates upped the drama and ridiculous firepower. The music was great. And a Ferrari was something most people saw on a poster. They were incredibly exotic and rare back then
