C5 added 6 grams that brought you to c8 maybe c9. Still Absurdly light. Nowhere near what he calls where they are “suppose” to be. D2 d3 would be factory. Your still 6-8 grams light on the head end of the shaft. Which plays massively into how the shaft flexes and everything else. I’d keep searching for a club builder.

Love to see club makers/fitters like AJ go through the steps to properly fit clubs. I learned how to fit clubs the correct way 30 years ago and have accumulated the tools to do so. I reshaft and fit my own equipment so I know they’re done right. I check my lofts and lies at least twice a season, sometimes more so I know my lofts and lies are precise. It’s a shame there are butchers out there who do club fitting a disservice. It s terrific to see people like AJ out there to teach how to properly fit clubs and explain what the steps are. Well done!

I love builders with pride and integrity. People that took on a profession because they enjoy their work, not just grinding away for a paycheck. Too many times I'd check out a shop and talk to the tech, but see in the background the clubs being worked on by what looks like apprentices. I get it, they are learning. I'd rather not have them learn on my clubs. They really shouldn't be "learning" on any customer's clubs by themselves.

I reshafted my own clubs with recoils. Their instructions say to cut graphite 1/2" longer. They do that to bring up the swingweight. The problem is if they're too friggin' long then having a heavier swingweight doesn't matter. In my case, I ended up loving the half in over and just kept it.
@M--76
@M--76 Год назад
I had a similar experience recently with Golf Galaxy. Took my Stealth DHY to get reshafted with a new shaft I brought in, specified the EXACT length I wanted, which was Taylormade stock length for that club and that I wanted the TM swing weight or as close as they could get. Well, the DHY came out a full 1/2" short and 5 swing weights off. I'm beyond PISSED

Back in the old days all graphite irons were built 1/4-1/2” longer so that swing weight was the same in both graphite and steel. This is not required for many of today’s shafts because the shafts for irons are made to have a similar weight distribution as steel even when the shaft is lighter overall.
@MrRobVision
@MrRobVision 11 месяцев назад
Pretty common to see unswingweighted iron sets when they re shafted at big box retailers. They guys r getting paid minimum wage, probably don’t even keep on top of inventory for tip weights, and pump out too much work daily to take the extra time to do it. I do all my own custom work, but if I was taking them to somebody, I would specifically tell them to swingweight them and specify what swingweight I want them at. I would also tell them I’m in no rush and give them a few extra days. I would even flip the guy 10$ cash and tell him thanks. Ur clubs will def get done right. That’s just the way it works at places like that🤷‍♂️

@timpoos4635
@timpoos4635 Год назад
Honestly if you ask for “standard” length then it’s gonna vary because every manufacturer has a different standard length and standard length has been increasing ever so slightly over the years. Best to specify exactly how many inches you want each club to be
@MrHazz0
@MrHazz0 Год назад
I agree with you to an extent. I was a certified fitter and clubmaker back in the day, if I was told standard, I would simply say, to this set? or Standard standard? and be referring to the golfworks standard (or the ping chart if ping is still very consistent, I havent looked in a while)
@nova68nova
@nova68nova Год назад
Yes but "standard" length for a 5-iron is never going to be 39 inches, that's just crazy. I could see them doing 0.5 over for graphite shafts, so 38.5 inches. But 39 is just wrong.
@MrHazz0
@MrHazz0 Год назад
@@nova68nova mid 2000s taylormades were famously about 1/4'' over standard for more distance in fittings, consequently, they tested to upright for most golfers as well, reducing fade bias and more distance as well, sneaky boys :)

@henrymonster9926
@henrymonster9926 Год назад
I bought pulled shafts once, the lengths were correct, but every shaft had a counter weight in the butt section. It was a disaster, not to mention the club heads (which were stated standard lie) were actually 4* flat, it was a costly and time consuming mistake. Find someone you trust and be willing to pay for good work.
@lawbinson
@lawbinson Год назад
Most of these big box stores hire part-timers straight out of high-school. Many who don’t even play golf just to do regripping and club work. There are also reputable people there. But, it’s a gamble who will actually be working on your clubs. If you’re at all serious about your clubs, you’ve got to take it to a reputable custom shop.

Mass produced irons sets will often be way off re specs. You don't know until they are taken apart, as per the video. If manufacturers weight sorted their heads, shafts and grips before assembly, then dry fitted before glueing, less of this poor quality would take place. Weight sorting heads would mean no lead and no shaft tip weighting. No extra weighting also preserves the center of gravity of the head itself. Hosel weighting changes the center of gravity. The reason big brands add a half inch to their graphite offerings is because they are too lazy to sort by weight. So, there is no such thing as standard length when they have one standard for steel shafts and and another for graphite shafts. There should be a 7g progression throughout the set (#5 iron head should 7g less than the #6 iron head) to allow for the shorter shaft in the #6 iron. If you want exact specs made for you, use a small manufacturer who makes one set at a time to your specs. Such a company is Jeffmont in Seattle who make the Avian brand of irons.

When a person orders a set of clubs with midsize grips from one of the major companies, do the assemblers typically add a small weight at the club head end to compensate for the additional weight of the grip?

As a Certified GolfSmith for over 45 years no mention was made of the make or model of the Club head...This has a bearing on the net result... to add weight to the hosel end in order to increase swing weight is a no no ! It moves the centre of gravity to the toe..Not a good move! Always better to add length to the shaft length. If it was a quality head from a renown manufacturer this would not be necessary. Even for the fitting of a graphite shaft..AJ's professional workshop environment is to be commended...

It’s wild how many issues I’ve had with builds, re-shafts and repairs with the big brand golf stores. They really don’t have a master club fitter, they just stick a kid back there or an old retired guy who doesn’t really care back in their shop and then charges premium prices for garbage work.

I've custom built 5 sets of irons with LA Golf shafts, you had better know what your doing or you end up with a mix bag like this and a club builder who is a scam artist. Adding head weight, proper setting of the shafts weights and measuring swing weight is the most important with LA shafts. However once you build them correctly, they feel amazing. Great video with a master club builder and a lesson to do your research on who is building your gear. Awesome.

Speaking from personal experience here. PGA Club Pro and I typically get a new set every 2 years. I know the exact specs that I want and that is how my clubs are ordered. I always check the lofts/lies as soon I get the set and I typically have to change 3-5 clubs each time. I also add lead tape to some to get the swing weights in-line. I'll fine tune the clubs for a month or so, until I get them the way I like. A good club-fitter like AJ would eliminate my having to do this.

Amazing that any club builder could be so careless and incompetent. I’ve been a hobbyist club builder for 30 years and have seen some bad work also. Regarding swing weight, have you ever built to MOI matching? I do this by building with .40 length change rather than .50. It helps with not having to bend over too much with short irons. Clubs truly feel the same.

When converting to graphite shafts from steel, the easy way to maintain swing weights is to make each club longer. Even club manufacturers used to make graphite shafted versions of their irons with longer shafts.
@blartnosecrenshaw
@blartnosecrenshaw 11 месяцев назад
This is true. However, now the clubs are longer and they might not properly fit the golfer. Length is a huge part of the fitting process. You also have to factor in the lie of the club - Effectively, when you lengthen a club, you also make the lie of the club more upright, which is also a critical factor.
